hockey coach Greg Powers live from the new Willie's Taco
Joint at the Vibe Hotel in Tempe on Fox Sports
nine ten and the Ihearts Radio. Welcome to the course
light first period of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach
Powers the voice of Sun Devil Hockey, Tyler Paley.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
On this Tuesday night, Sun Devil Hockey is in recharge
mode after three weekends of some hard nosed hockey. In
the last two weeks since we last spoke, the Sun
Devils have earned some hardware, debuted a couple new players,
and learned a lot about themselves. Now at brief break
before the most important time of the year when conference
play opens up. Hi, everybody, Welcome into season four, episode

(00:45):
three of Hell Frozen Over. Your source for the latest
Sun Devil Hockey news and node streaming tonight on Fox
Sports nine ten and the iHeartRadio app. I'm Tyler Paley,
the team's play by play broadcaster, and tonight, as you
can see, we are switching things up a little bit
on the bye We are live from from Mullet Arena
in Tempe. Joining me tonight and every show this year,

(01:05):
Arizona State head coach Greg Powers and my broadcast partner
Alex Coyle coach a lot to catch up on since
our last show, but now that we're all back after
the first road trip of the year, a lot of
new guys, first time traveling together.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Aside from the results, of course, which we'll get to.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
How do you think the trip went and how do
road trips writ large help with the team chemistry?

Speaker 4 (01:27):
This early getting away together is always good. The road
trip overall, it sucked. You know, it's all about results.
That's the world we live in, and we didn't go
up there and get the.

Speaker 5 (01:35):
Results that we desire on any level.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
And uh but like I told the guys after the game, Hey,
it's it's we're going to go back, We're going to reset.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
We're going to get better. We know what we need
to work on.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
And we just need to play more passionate, better connected
hockey and we will.

Speaker 6 (01:55):
At points like this where is the balance for the
coaching staff of going in and correcting and focusing on
the things and being being a hard coach versus you know,
easing the guys into like, oh, we got so much
hockey in front of us and and if we fix
the things, we're gonna be Okay.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, I think I think the balance is exactly that.
There has to be balance.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
It can't just be Hey, we went up there and
and and didn't have a very good weekend. Friday, I thought,
I thought, for the most part, we probably were the
better team. We we probably should have won that game.
But Saturday they took it to us. They were just
a better team. They were faster the pucks, they were
more connected, they were definitely more passionate and had more energy,
uh than we did.

Speaker 5 (02:37):
And we were flat and slow to pucks and and
you could feel it and you could see it. So
it is what it is.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
But but I think that's a great question because it's
not you know, I think the worst thing you can
do is come back here as a coach and and
and take the bowl, whip out and and just whip
them every day. You know, you gotta you gotta Look,
the reality is is we have seventeen new players is
that have never played in this program, and we need

(03:04):
to mold them and continue to sculpt them and build
them up and get them to be Sun Double Hockey tough,
Sun do a hockey passionate, sun double hockey, everything that
we're about. You know, you're in our locker room, you see,
you know six six words that say integrity, selflessness, passion, focus,
confidence and trust. And the biggest things we're focusing on,

(03:27):
you know in these two weeks is those two things.
Confidence and trust, you know, really really honing in on
being able to trust each other, trust the process, trust
what we're asking them to do, and earning and building
trust with everybody.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Good to have two weeks to do that, Yeah, yeah,
it really comes at a perfect time, and I do
want to dive into that.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
A little bit more.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
But first let's rewind a second, if you don't mind,
back to the Icebreaker tournament. We haven't had a show
since then. Game one, of course, you guys jumped out
to an early lead against Notre Dame. The Irish did
end up threatening in the second period, but Ben Keevan
answered in a big way two goals of his own,
his first two collegiate goals at that point, the first
of which went down as the eventual game winner in

(04:06):
that one. How impressed were you overall by that first
win of the season and the ability to play in
the championship came on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
It was it was a great win.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
I thought that what I liked about it was, obviously,
we go out to a three to nothing lead, they
cut it to three to two, and then we go
right back out and get it up to five to
three and don't look at five, five to two, don't
look back.

Speaker 5 (04:25):
So you know, it was it was.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Kind of counter punch, counter punch and uh and our
guys do the last one and it was enough to
get it to the championship game against a good Notre
Dame team that just took it to Saint Lawrence over
the weekend.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
It's gonna win a lot of games.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
Tyler mentioned Ben Keevan and what he was able to bring,
not only in that game, but with that weekend. It
seemed like he truly popped. What does he bring to
the program outside of the obvious skill in the second
round pick mentality?

Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, a lot.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
I mean speed and and and tenacity to to to
get pucks in the net. And he loves the score.
He's electric when the pucks on it stick. He's a
young player, though he has a lot of work to
do off the puck, a lot of work to do
on the defensive. Side of the puck, and that's why
he's here. He's here to get better in those areas
and learn. He's a second round draft pick for a reason.

(05:12):
And I think that he showed why just in those
two goals alone, why he was such a high draft pick,
with how much promise and talent and potential he has.
And now it's on us to bring out the other
aspects of his game over the next few years while
he's here with us, to make sure that he when
he moves on to the highest level in the world,
he's ready to go.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
You could just tell how pumped up he was after this.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
Well, yeah, he loves the score.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, that became evident quickly. All right, So Game two
of the icebreaker Saturday rolls around. You guys are playing
a very good and very familiar Alaska team. Similar story
as far as jumping out to the lead and really
never looking back. A Cruz Lucius third period hat trick
really sealed the deal and sealed another in season tournament

(05:56):
win for you guys. How special was it, especially taking
place in the second weekend of the season.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Yeah, I mean the win a trophy home ice in
front of your you know, our fans who saw two
pretty heartbreaking losses the weekend prior was a was good.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
It was good for our guys to feel that and
enjoy that together.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
And and you know, you hope you you can build
momentum through that kind of success and and and have it.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
Breed more winning.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
But to have a young team, you know, go through
that early in the season and beat a good fair
Fairbanks is legit.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
They they've beaten Quinnipiac.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
They just beat Michigan Tech five to one, who went
up to Minnesota in one.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
You know, it's college hockey.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Is the parody is is is larger than it's ever
been right now, you know, And it's all over the map,
whether it's Linnenwood beating Denver, whether it's Fairbanks, you know,
beating Quinnipiac, whether it's Michigan Tech going to Minnesota and
beating them, whether it's Augustana sleeping as U.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
It's it's it's everywhere.

Speaker 6 (06:52):
So and it's exciting to see Cruz Lucius do what
he was able to do in that second game, knowing
what he went through last year and the great summer
that he had, How good did it feel for the
person that he was able to pop like that?

Speaker 7 (07:05):
And then knowing you're gonna get a fantastic player for
the rest of the year.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, I mean we we really wanted him to get
off to a good start, you know. And he's six
goals and six games and and I mean he could
easily have ten.

Speaker 6 (07:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
Yeah, So you know, he's off to the start that
we need him to be because he's he's a leader,
and he's a he's one of our oldest, most veteran players,
and and he's playing like it. He's he's doing more
for us than than just scoring. He's he's making plays,
he's you know, his his rush offense is more effective

(07:36):
than anybody on our team right now. What he's doing
when he enders his own, his stick battles and his
ability to go and win battles for us is really
good right now. He's he's he's really well rounded his game,
and he's all about winning. He's all about the program,
he's all about his teammates, and generally when you have
that approach, good things happen.

Speaker 5 (07:54):
And good things are happening to him.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, certainly, he's uh and still one of college hockey
writ large is leading scorers still over the course of
his career, between Wisconsin and ASU. All right, so we
rewind to last weekend. August standa, you guys had momentum
obviously from the prior week with the icebreaker. It seemed
to carry over at the beginning two first period goals,

(08:16):
but then it was that was it. Offensively Augustana chipped away,
took advantage of a couple of costly turnovers, a lot
of perimeter play on ASU's end. I know that loss
really stung for you and the whole team because of
this self inflicted nature.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Is what you relate to us after that game?

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Yeah, you know, I thought Friday we viewed ourselves. You know,
they didn't really have to make any plays to go
up and take the lead and win that game. And
it was frustrating because you know, like you said that,
we did ride the momentum. We were feeling great all week.
We had a good trip up there. It was an
easy trip. It was a great place to go play,

(08:51):
great crowd, great venue. Garrett's a new an unbelievable job
with their program, go up ontom two nothing. It felt
like we were in complete control of the game and
you have, you know, a line out there that you
really trust. In the last two minutes and you know,
they had a couple of brain farts and it happens,
you know, and then and then they pop a goal.
Going into this the first intermission, it's two to one.

(09:12):
You know, I, I know, I'm convinced. If we go
in that intermission up to nothing, it's a completely different outcome.
But it's why we focus so much on those last
two minutes of every period to really tighten things up,
especially when you have the league and the lead, and
to not give the other team momentum going into the room.
So a lot of lessons have been learned so far

(09:32):
this this season through six games, and those are lessons
we got to make make sure make us better.

Speaker 6 (09:37):
Of course, you would much rather learn those lessons in
a win, But how valuable are those lessons going to
be for when you go to Miami and let's say
you take a lead late to finish off a game.
You take a lead out of Denver, you take a
lead out of North Dakota to finish off that, to
get the eleven freshmen to understand what it feels like
and no, let's not do that, and how.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
To put the best thing the draw on his experience, right,
you can only go through so much over film. You
can only talk about it to exhaustion so much until
your voice becomes deaf, you know, and and or falls
on deaf years and and and so to go through
the experiences is big. When we closed out two games
here last weekend, you know, there's a lot of positive

(10:20):
to our season.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
You know.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
We we could easily be six and zero, yeah, probably
probably probably should be yeah, five and one, and and
we've been trailing going into one third period. We we've
got to find a way to find another gear with
this young team and to be able to play a
full sixty minutes, you know, and when we do, we
are going to be really good.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Just to recapping, not to beat a dead horse here,
but but Game two against Augustana, it was the Vikings
who got off to a one nothing lead, short lived.
You guys tie it later in the first. You blink
your two periods in, it's three to one Augustana. Your
team wouldn't go away. They did score, making it three
to two and the third, but then again they took
advantage of a couple of mistakes, ultimately winning five to

(11:04):
two with the empty netter. It felt like your team
played significantly better on Saturday, at least from our vantage point,
what is it that they're struggling to get pucks on
net because just single digit shot totals in each of
those three periods Saturday.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
We were just flat. Like like I said, we were flat.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
We were we had no second support, you know, on
on on anybody with the puck, and we were relying
on quick strike offense, one and done type type opportunities.
That's not going to win you games. You know, we
have to found a consistent ground game. We love to
be in lethal and dangerous off the rush like we
always have been.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
But like last year, it.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Took us, unfortunately, you know, thirteen games to define that
quote unquote ground game and and and get these guys
that really understand what it's going to take to generate
ozone offense, to sustained ozone pressure in possession. And once
we became a really good possession team was when we
we turned the season around, you know. And so we're

(12:01):
drawing on those experiences and telling this team, Hey, it
took last year's team thirteen games. It can't take that long.
It shouldn't take that long. There's no reason for it
to take that long.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
You got to buy in. We got to do this now.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
And I believe the bye we came at a perfect
time because we are going to work on all this stuff.
We did exhaustively today, We're going to again tomorrow and
every day until we go play Miami.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
And are they responding well?

Speaker 5 (12:24):
So yeah, Yeah, the attitude and the you know, the
the energy and everything was really.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
Positive today, you know, and it's on me to keep
it positive and again drawing experiences.

Speaker 5 (12:37):
You know, we started last year I think three seven
and one, you.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
Know, and and we turned it around and so I
think we were one four and one through six games,
and this year we're two and four.

Speaker 5 (12:47):
I'm not pumping my chest on two crappy starts.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
Because nobody likes to get off to a better start
more than I did.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
Two years ago.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
We got off to I think we were seven to
one on one to start, right, so, you know, and
when you can do that, you get that momentum. It
just it seems to you know, that's when the winning
breeds winning, you know, And so we got to get
we got to get that going and get these guys
in this room, you know, feeling confident and trusting what
our process is and trusting each other and and we will.

(13:14):
That's that's what the main focus is this week.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
And you can just feel, I mean like being around
the team, you can feel they want to win. And
you use the term capable of winning a lot this
past weekend. It's just they're not translating.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
That's exactly what I said to him before the first
game is you know, we all know what we're capable of.
We have a lot of talent in this room. And
and at the end of the day, in life, in sports,
it doesn't matter what you're capable of.

Speaker 5 (13:36):
It matters what you're actually willing to do.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
How willing are you to you know, how willing are
you to go out and do what it takes to
beat an opponent.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
It's hard, really, you know. And and that other team
was more willing than us this weekend. It was that simple.

Speaker 7 (13:51):
One thing I did.

Speaker 6 (13:52):
One player I really enjoyed watching, and we have first
time that we've got to discuss. His play on the
ice was Sam Urban. The athleticism, the confidence that he
brings in the crease. What have you like from him?
What have you seen from him in his first two collegiate.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Just a swagger, right, He's a confident kid on and
off the ice, and he brings a great personality and
he plays with that personality. He plays with that energy.
He plays the puck really well, which is a huge help.
He's got to help a future in front of him.
We're just really happy he's here.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
What are you doing to help Connor Hasley through his
early season kind of roller coaster? I don't want to
say complete struggles, but how are you trying to get him,
you know, back to what we saw he could do
last year?

Speaker 4 (14:31):
Think haz just has to settle in and focus on
on giving us, you.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
Know, the saves that that he should make. He's making
big saves. He's making big saves.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
He's he's coming through and big moments and and doing
a really good job. But then there's just some some
moments where you know, you know, what breaks teams back
sometimes is when a goalie lets in something that that
you probably shouldn't, you know, and he's a hell of
a goal We we know he's got it in him.
He's shown it here already. He's a Miiker cop. Some
of our entire team really like, we have to we

(15:03):
have to get these guys to put together full games.
Will sixty minutes, you're going to have breakdowns, and and
when you have breakdowns, your your your backup plan, and
your last line of defense is your goalie. And I
know he'll come through for.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Us one more before we head to a quick break.
I do want to hear about your assessment of your
power play up to this point. Obviously the slow start,
a rocking five goal performance against Alaska, but then just
one goal last weekend and they gave up technically two
short handed goals. What's your assessment of that unit right now?

Speaker 4 (15:31):
It's got to be better, right And I think that
is also just a microcosm of the immaturity that that
this team has collectively, you know, like, and I don't
mean that in a negative way, just the lack of
experience that they have together in chemistry.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
The guy that's going to really help his power play
as Jack Beck, and he's back now.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
So we're excited about about adding him to the mix.
He's really going to help it. He's going to help
everything that we do. But it it's scored some nice goals,
it's it's done some good things, but your power play
has to find a way to win you games and situations,
and you know, it had a chance to win us
the second Penn State game and it didn't on a
five on three. It had plenty of chances over the

(16:14):
weekend to pad leads and extend leads and give us
leads in the third on Friday, and it didn't. It
came through big on Saturday, cut it to three two.
But we need we need them to really develop that
killer instinct. And and when you can go in and rip,
rip an opponent's juggler out and extend your lead to
three and four with.

Speaker 5 (16:34):
The power play, you got to be able to do it.
Last year's team did that.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
They did that and and in spades, and and people
were when they fear your power play, they start playing
uh less aggressive, they start getting hesitant, they start getting
passive because they're so free to go to the box
and so it just propels everything that you do and
opens up space and and so we got to get
it to that point.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
Yeah, you guys really hung your hat on that last
year and in several seasons Pas as well.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Well.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
A bit of a rocky start to uh the season,
but remember we are just six games into a thirty
six game slate. Plenty of times, plenty of time. That is,
to get things rolling, we will preview ASU's next series
coming up in the third period. Up next, Sun Devil

Arizona State needs a dog, a scorer, a guy like
Ryan Kerwin or ur Tim Schlaine last year who were
dangerous on every shift. There's one man emerging as that
guy through six games this season, and that's Cruz Lucius.
More than a point per game so far, a hat
trick two weeks ago. He's been electric and the Devils
will be turning to him a lot as this season
moves forward. Cruz joins us now on health frozen over,

(21:25):
so appreciate you taking some time.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
Good to see us, sir. Yeah, thanks for having me guys.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
So, first things first, obviously a bit of a rocky
start to the year. How's the team's mentality right now
during the bye week?

Speaker 14 (21:35):
Yeah, I think it's obviously not to start we wanted,
but you know, you can only look forward, and we're
using this bye week as you know, we to kind
of come together, practice hard, and you know, work on things.
We got to improve on our habits just to get
ready for these games coming up.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
Yeah, it might not be the overall team success, but
you specifically, especially with everything that you went through earl
injury caused you to miss early parts of last season,
and you know, you come on in the back half
and and put up some some some good stuff. It
looked looked good, but not what you wanted, not what
everybody wanted to have the summer that you did fully
healthy into this one and they get off to this start.

Speaker 7 (22:13):
What did that mean to you?

Speaker 14 (22:14):
Yeah, I mean I think first it's uh, credit to
the guys who I'm out on the ice with, like,
wouldn't be able to do it without, you know, some
of the passes and just plays that we've been making.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
But yeah, it feels good.

Speaker 14 (22:26):
I think overall, just summer I have was just a
big focus on kind of getting my shoulder back to
where it was before. You know, I think going back
to last year, I kind of came back a little
bit early just because I really wanted to play and
get there with the guys. But you know, couldn't couldn't
be happier with the summer I had. And you know,
obviously you know our strength coach and trainer and everybody

(22:48):
helping me.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
So yeah, it's it's good to feel back to normal.
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Is is there anything you're doing you specifically right now
to kind of right the ship, whether that's on the ice,
off the ice, what are you doing and taking into
your own hands?

Speaker 14 (23:02):
Yeah, I think I'm just trying to be there for
the guys right now. Obviously being a leader is a
big role to have, just just trying.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
To you know, build culture, help the guys whenever they needed. It's.

Speaker 14 (23:15):
Uh, it's hard coming in as a freshman and you know,
as a transfer, you know so many new guys. But
you know, I think for myself, just trying to, you know,
help the guys and you know, fit fit in and
you know, whatever they need, I'm I'm there for them.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
So that's great.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
And I do want to ask you about you being
an alternate captain. First of all, congratulations, thank you. That
is no small honor. Before I ask you about this
this kind of time, specifically, tell me about how you
found out and kind of your reaction and and you know, your.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Reaction after the fact that.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
That, hey, I'm gonna be like a legitimate leader on
this team.

Speaker 14 (23:49):
Yeah, I mean, I think, uh, looking back on it,
it's obviously something that I wanted and you know, I think,
you know, going back to start of the spring after
a season, I had a conversation with the coach just
how much how much I did, how much I did
want it.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
You know.

Speaker 14 (24:05):
He explained to me that basically, uh, you know, it's hard,
and obviously there's a lot of guys that are deserving
of it, for sure, but just you know, kind of
being there in the summer with the guys. I spent
a lot of time here meeting the new guys when
they came in right away, you know, helping.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Build like I said, the culture at the start.

Speaker 14 (24:24):
And then obviously just having experience in college, who I
think helps a lot. And yeah, when a coach uh
called me kind of the night before he announced it,
it was an unbelievable feeling. And uh, you know, with
shim being the captain, he obviously obviously was you know,
in the know of it before and you know, we're
roommates to and hang out all the time. He he
didn't tell me.

Speaker 7 (24:44):
He was, uh.

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Know, but I I always appreciate that.

Speaker 14 (24:50):
Uh Like, at the end of the day, it's the
most important thing is winning games and you know, being
you know, hockey in general, and you know, if that
wasn't the case me being captain, it's you know, all
focused on the season.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
But no matter what, you.

Speaker 14 (25:05):
Know, I obviously wanted to be a leader on the
team and I couldn't be more excited. And you know,
just just it's a big honor.

Speaker 3 (25:13):
That's awesome.

Speaker 6 (25:14):
You also get to I mean, you mentioned Bennett, you
guys have played together for a long long time, because
I've known each other for a long long time. Where
did you guys first meet? Like, where did you guys
first gate together? And how cool is it to be
on the same line here?

Speaker 14 (25:26):
Yea, I honestly I can't remember what grade because it's
that long ago, but I want to say it was
like thir third grade. I mean, it was a long
time ago, and I really don't remember meet him.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
We both went to the same school. It was better,
I'd like say.

Speaker 14 (25:42):
Myself, I'll think he's not here, I mean, but but yeah,
like growing up, he was always one of my really
good buddies. And then we really do have a close
group of friends back at home, guys who I've played
with since I was you know, basically ten leading up
to fifteen sixteen, So we do have a close, close

(26:04):
group of guys at home. And yeah, it's it's kind
of crazy how that turned out for me and him
to be, you know, living together on the same team.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
And yeah, he is an unbelievable guy. Yeah, and you,
but both of you got a great player too. Yeah,
I'm thinking back to August.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Come on, connecting on that goal in particular, that must
have been so special. I know you guys have connected
on probably many goals over the course of your pretty
your hockey careers, but how special was that one?

Speaker 3 (26:32):
Despite the loss?

Speaker 14 (26:33):
Yeah, I mean, obviously it's it's always nice to put
one in together. But yeah, like we we we do
connect it. He's just an easy player to play with,
you know, knowing him for so long, you really can
talk to him about anything, and you know he and
as well as he can say things to me, and
you know, no matter if it's good or bad, we

(26:53):
both eat it and move on. I mean that's I
think that's how you be successful as a line and
really as a team is being able to communicate with
each other on things you think, you know, maybe they
need to improve on or as well as for myself too,
and I think both of us do have a good
connection with that and you know, you know it's coming
from a good place.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
You can be honest with you exactly exactly.

Speaker 14 (27:16):
At the end of the day, all we want to
do is, you know, win and succeed as a as
a team and put each other in the best spots
to to succeed and to do to be consistent and
sh each other on.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
Yeah, oh yeah, I'm alway cheering them on as well
as all the other guys.

Speaker 6 (27:30):
And I think those relationships in a time where you
guys are right now coming off a disappointing series, you know,
especially from the captain group, because that messaging can be
the same on down to the younger guys. What kind
of stuff are you doing to keep the group close together,
but also the vibe high in this room to make
sure that you know that two losses doesn't spiral.

Speaker 14 (27:50):
Yeah, I think the you got to look at you know,
it is early in the season, and then you look
at last year too. You know, we we didn't have
the greatest start in the world or what we wanted
to and for some of the games.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
That we have had, we were right there.

Speaker 14 (28:04):
And I think it comes down to just us preparing
better and being ready for those moments. Uh, you know,
being being up in games. That's that's a big thing
in college is hard to win. And we we have
played some really really good teams. But you know what
we're doing, We're we're we're always trying to be together.
We have a really really close group of guys and
a great culture and I think the team, you know,

(28:26):
what what we need.

Speaker 3 (28:27):
Is not to get too high, not to get too low.

Speaker 14 (28:31):
I mean, everybody's gonna, you know, have up ups and
downs throughout the year, and it's about staying consistent and
doing the right things. And I think, you know, going
into this week and next week. It's it is about
doing the right things.

Speaker 5 (28:44):
Uh.

Speaker 14 (28:44):
You know, coaches really preached, Uh you know, you live
right and you you do good And I think that's
that is very true.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
So I mentioned it a few moments ago.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
And if you're like any of our previous guests for
the last four seasons, you're not gonna want to talk
a lot about yourself. But I'm gonna ask anyway. You're
off to a really hot start this season. Seven points
in six games at my last check, already a hat
trick in front of your home crowd. What's been clicking
for you so far this year?

Speaker 14 (29:10):
Yeah, I mean, I I would say obviously the preparation
I had in the summer, But going back to kind
of what I said previously, I think it is staying
kind of even keel. It is a long season, so
you know, you can you can have really good stretches
of games, but it is about what you're doing in

(29:31):
that time and what you're doing after to.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
I think I think just trying to be.

Speaker 14 (29:36):
Consistent in that, staying to what I'm doing throughout the
week preparing for games, and having that never change even
after a good game or or a bad game.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
So that's Yeah, consistency is the key. Just a couple
more before we head to break. But I do want
to ask. Obviously, you guys are on a bye week,
which coach powers and I don't know if you agree
that it comes at the perfect time. You know, it
kind of reset after that. You guys have Miami, not
the RedHawks of the past who you've seen. They're they're good,
They're turning a lot of heads across college hockey. How

(30:09):
are you guys approaching that series, if at all right
now to open up conference play?

Speaker 14 (30:14):
Yeah, that that that that's a good point. You know,
conference play is is a really big thing, and you
want to.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
Start off hot.

Speaker 14 (30:20):
You know, I know for a fact Miami is is
a good team, and you know that it will be
a challenge for us. But you know, like you always
go back to its preparing, it's being together. It's a
good hard week of practice, and then just you know,
watching them, looking at how they play, and then ultimately
being confident in ourselves, I think is the biggest thing,

(30:42):
you know, not looking not looking in the past, just
moving forward.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
Well, we knew that you would be an integral part
of this year's offense, already showing in a huge way
as we enter the final season of October, so appreciate
you joining us tonight. I hope you get to go
enjoy some food out there and enjoy the bye week
while last, and we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 3 (30:59):

appreciate it.

Hockey guests over at the Vibe Hotel. Coach Bye weeks

(34:50):
can be both a blessing and a curse. How do
you view this bye week after your first three weekends?

Speaker 4 (34:56):
With as long as our season is, it's never a
curse ever, you know. And if you look at our
history after bye weeks, who've generally done really well. I
think last year our first bye week wasn't until we
played Duluth.

Speaker 5 (35:07):
At home and uh.

Speaker 4 (35:09):
And I think a lot of people will worried that
that a sweep after Denver would would kill the momentum.
But but look these these like, especially when you have
a young team like we have, like you need as
much time with these kids as you can.

Speaker 5 (35:21):
Get and and and we're spending it this week.

Speaker 4 (35:24):
We're gonna do things, a lot of things together. We're
gonna spend a lot of time in the rink and
obviously focus on what we need to on the ice,
but stuff off the ice and just become a even
tighter knit group over the over the net course of
the next ten days.

Speaker 5 (35:36):
And and then we're off in another road trip where
we can come even closer.

Speaker 6 (35:39):
Bye week also means that you get to get healthy.
Of course, raising bos are likely expected back, and then
you also get back back.

Speaker 3 (35:47):
I guess, add Beck.

Speaker 6 (35:49):
What do those two bring and how important is that,
especially the timing right before conference.

Speaker 4 (35:53):
But do I expect them to to, you know, light
the world on fire and be utter world beaters in the.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
First or two.

Speaker 4 (36:00):
Probably not, but they are. They're difference makers in every way.
And that's not to put pressure on them. But you
can feel how inexperienced our decoor is and at times
right and what Brazen Boser gives us is some experience obviously,
but just a really calming presence. That's the way he plays.

(36:24):
He is a two hundred foot defenseman that plays both ways.

Speaker 5 (36:28):
He breaks pucks out.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
Better than maybe anybody we've ever had in this program.
He can break him out with his feet, he can
break him out in so many different ways, and that
calms a team down when you have a guy in
the ice that's probably gonna get twenty three to twenty
five minutes a night, in more minutes than almost anybody
on a nightly basis, because because that's how important he
is to us. So then I've had him through six games,

(36:51):
it has really hurt us, and so we're excited to
get him back. And it was just a freak accident
that happened the week of uh Penn State in practice
and and uh, you know, we're you know it was
it was beyond freak accident. So it was unfortunate. But
we're we're we're hopeful and and anticipating that he will

(37:11):
be back. And then Jack beck Is is just a
special player. He's he's he has poise, he can make plays.
He gives us a much much, much needed left shot
that that we really and it's going to allow us
to put somebody else on on their their strong side
and not playing their offhand, which is gonna be huge.
So we're excited to get him into the fold and

(37:32):
and he's gonna help us.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
In every way.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Alex jumped on my injury update question, So thanks for that,
but I guess you answered it, so Bowse, you're expecting
back from Miami? Anybody else any other injuries to report
at this stick?

Speaker 5 (37:43):
No, no, not right now.

Speaker 4 (37:43):
I mean, you never know, we have we have, you know,
a week and a half left of practice and things happen,
but but right now we're we're we're we're in good shape.

Speaker 2 (37:52):
Fully healthy. Knock on wood. That is some good news.
Do you have you thought about where Boser will play.
Who he will be paired up with on defense.

Speaker 4 (38:00):
I don't know who he'll play with. You know, we'll
figure that out, but I can tell you that he's
going to play a lot fair enough.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
I like that. We'll look forward to it.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Face offs, they seem to be an emerging advantage for
your team, which is a welcome change, at least for
Alex and me winning that battle in all six games
so far. Is there a different emphasis in terms of
coaching in that aspect of the game this season?

Speaker 4 (38:23):
It's look like there's face off specialists and there's kids
that really embraced the the art of being really good
at that, and we have four of them. You know,
like Pozzi last year wasn't great at the dot, but
he was also seventeen and he really worked at it and.

Speaker 5 (38:39):
He's been night and day better.

Speaker 4 (38:41):
And then Logan Morele and Sean mcgern are just absolute
machines at the dot.

Speaker 5 (38:45):
And so you know, they've helped a ton.

Speaker 4 (38:47):
And then Kyle Smollen's always been really our top guy
on face offs with arready last year. So we have
four guys that are winning face offs for us, and
when you have that, that's a huge advantage. It's probably,
like you said, one of the major bright spots, and
and and and things that we can be excited about.
We're starting with the puck a lot, which is what

(39:08):
you want. Now when we have it, we got to
treat it more like it's a piece of gold because
it is.

Speaker 6 (39:13):
On the face off thing. I think it's a sort
of subject for Tyler and myself because of how frustrating
it is at times to get the linesman to drop
the pucks. Simply is there some sort of point of
emphasis early on in the season that they're working on.

Speaker 5 (39:27):
Look, there is, and it's it's just there is there's
a point of emphasis.

Speaker 4 (39:32):
On making sure that the offensive centerman who comes in
second has to pause and not come in and and
glide into it and cheat it. And I get that,
but there's a fine line between giving linesman a point
of emphasis that can really really control and dictate the

(39:55):
flow of a game, and and it's just not working.

Speaker 5 (39:59):
So I don't know not that I can do about it.

Speaker 6 (40:02):
So it is what it is, a lot of those
you'll see early season officiating.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
Sure up there last weekend it wasn't it wasn't really
as bad as they said going into the weekend, you know,
their official supervisor came in and said, look, we want
the puck on the ice, just so you know, like
this is what we're looking for. We want the puck
on the ice. We want to let the players play.
And I think as long as linesmen can develop that
mindset will be fine.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
Yeah, it just seems like mcgern has thrown out of
every face off. But whatever, that's a gripe for a
different day. Let's dive into the next series that you
guys have on the schedule.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
Miami.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
This is not the Miami of the past, even really
the Miami of a few months ago. Last in the
n a year ago, didn't get a conference win. Really
just the epitome of brutality if you think about it.
But Anthony Norrien.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
Seems to seems to have them buzz this year. Am
I wrong? I won't. I won't make you answer to that.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
They're really off to a fantastic start this year, and
that's what we should focus on.

Speaker 3 (40:59):
What should we know about.

Speaker 4 (41:01):
My They're not They're not the team that they were
last year. You know, and Anthony is a really good
friend of mine. He he and I go back a
long ways, you know, back to when he was in
Youngstown and the USHL, when we were a club team.
I had two individuals Jordan Young and Stephen Collins that
played in Youngstown that came and played for me, and
Anthony was a was a really supportive, you know, conduit

(41:23):
into making that happen and supporting those two guys to
not going n C Double A and coming to a
SU and playing on our a ch A team.

Speaker 5 (41:30):
He didn't pooh poo it. He didn't downplay it. Uh
he didn't.

Speaker 4 (41:34):
He didn't talk down to it or me or anything.
And so we go back a long way and have
stayed really good friends since those days. And I knew
when they hired him he's going to do a great job.
And in today's landscape with with the portal and went
the HL, and with the playerpool being so big, it's
not gonna take long to get good. And that's what
you're seeing all this parody. Everybody's good. Everybody's good, And

(41:59):
that's what I think the average maybe as U fan,
it's not a college hockey connoisseur so to speak, yet
is learning is it doesn't matter. You can play Notre
Dame one weekend and and beat him and then you know,
for the average you know sports fan here in the
valley who doesn't know who Augustana is.

Speaker 5 (42:20):
You know, they peel back the onion.

Speaker 4 (42:23):
They'll go, wait a minute, they're treating hockey at that
institution like it's football. You know that that's that's their
big ticket, that's their main you know program where they
just built a brand new facility for it and are
really supporting it from a resource standpoint in so many
great ways. And there's so many teams like that, and
so many programs like that that have history and they're

(42:47):
not one that has history, but that that the average
you know sports fan doesn't know about. It's it's that's
what makes college hockey so great, is that on any
given night, anyone can win there like that. It's already
been proven of Penn State went to went to overtime
with l i U last weekend.

Speaker 5 (43:03):
You know, Denver goes into linen Wood and loses. You know,
the list is long already, right, and it's going to
continue to be and and it's going to be a
crazy season and and until you know, people kind of
figure out this new landscape.

Speaker 4 (43:19):
And and I always said I thought that the HL
was really going to level the playing field because some
of those smaller programs are going up and getting those
those older players that are really ready and and uh
and it has.

Speaker 6 (43:32):
Miami has a pretty good hockey tradition as well. Of course,
you know, to be a member of the n c
HC you kind of almost have to How valuable is
it to the conference to have all nine of its members,
you know, on the upswing as much as they can
and competing.

Speaker 4 (43:48):
Everybody's everybody's playing well and doing good things. And I
think the non conference record this year is drastically better
than a lead best in the country, and we're not
helping that right now, but we still have six non
conference games left, so we'll we'll figure that out and
and make sure we contribute. But yeah, it's a great league.

(44:09):
We knew, you know, it was a great league last year.
It's just it's just, you know, too many teams, you know,
did what we did last weekend consistently, and yeah, it
hurt the league.

Speaker 5 (44:17):
But right now the league's in a really good, really
good spot.

Speaker 2 (44:20):
I know this is a hockey show, a lot of
people are tuning in to talk about hockey, but I
do want to ask you about kind of the state
of of Sun Deville Athletics rit Largs. Right now, there's
a lot of good things happening. Football is looking really good.
Big upset win against Texas Tech this though, well some
people are saying absolutely because our quarterback doesn't think it
was an upset, that's right.

Speaker 5 (44:40):
I got agree with sat and I don't think it
was an upset.

Speaker 3 (44:43):
I mean it was.

Speaker 2 (44:44):
It was awesome to watch regardless basketball season right around
the corner. I know you're close with JJ van Neil
and what he's doing with the volleyball program.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
They're up to what.

Speaker 2 (44:52):
Seventh in the country. I mean, it's stud like what
you know, there are lots of good things happening here
on campus. What are you seeing and hearing to, you know,
kind of renew that from last year when it was
a great season for sund Athletics carrying into this year.

Speaker 4 (45:06):
Yeah, it's just we've got a lot of really good coaches,
you know, and I think coaches that there's a there's
a lot of coaches here that view this as a destination,
you know, and and where I think you know, being
as such an avid Sun Devil sports fan for you know,
thirty plus years since I've lived here and went to

(45:27):
school here. I think that through those those years, a
lot of years, so many people viewed this as you know,
a really good place, but a stepping stone a lot
of different things. And I think we have coaches here
that that that certainly just view the lifestyle you can
live here, you know, the ability to attract young people

(45:48):
to such an incredible institution, and the commitment to you know, conclude,
you know, getting better resources every day that that we
have through our president and ad. It's just a lot
of momentum and and you know, we have people that
are smart enough to realize, like, hey, the grass probably
isn't going to be greener, right, you know, And and

(46:09):
it's taken you know, since I've been around thirty plus
years to get a core group of coaches I think
that feel that way, and I think we have a
core group that does feel that way. And when you
have a football coach that feels that way and is
having success and has so much passion for what this
institution is and and for it, it trickles.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
Yeah, it just makes it so much fun for everybody,
us included Coach Greg Powers with the latest here on
Hell Frozen over his Sun Devil's of course off this weekend,
but they hit the ice on Hollow weekend in Oxford,
Ohio against Miami. Where would you rather be on hollow
weekend other than Tempe or Oxford. I'll leave it at that.
You'll hear from him on our pregame show beginning at

(46:48):
we should talk about that.

Speaker 3 (46:49):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (46:49):
I'm still thinking about what do you think I should
dress up? As it'd be an easy one. I would
already have the heads Shrek first thing that comes to
mind for Greg powers from the top row. On that note,
We're gonna head to break. Alex and I are back
alone right after this on the Mountain America.

Speaker 4 (47:05):
Credits, you don't look like you have to dress up
like Shrek.

Speaker 2 (50:44):
I think I'm gonna go home and make the wife
watch it with me here tonight, we're about to find out.
All right, let's get back to business. The icebreaker, it's
hard to remember back that far. It feels like forever ago, right,
but we'll try. It was really all gas, no breaks
for Arizona State. Really felt like that they're gonna need
to only build another annex here at some point just
to increase their trophy case space. Don't you think that's never.

Speaker 7 (51:06):
A bad thing?

Speaker 3 (51:06):
No, no, but they looked really good.

Speaker 6 (51:09):
And the point of pride to play for all of that, Yeah,
of course is that early in the season is good
to ramp up the intensity and get everything flowing in
the right directions. The programs that you had in here,
the familiarity of Fairbanks, the classic nature of Notre Dame,
and then the recent national champion and Quinnipiac, right, you know,
you could not ask for for three better in the

(51:30):
non conference light to come into your building. We had
three really good hockey games and Aarzona State came out
on top.

Speaker 3 (51:36):
Four really good hockey games.

Speaker 2 (51:37):
I mean, you know, like the one between Notre Dame
and Quinnipiac got a little bit out of hand, but
I agree with you that the level of talent was
just awesome.

Speaker 3 (51:45):
You know, any college hockey, and the.

Speaker 7 (51:46):
Size of Notre Dame was as big as shreck.

Speaker 2 (51:48):
My gosh, they are massive, aren't they. I mean, when
they figure it out like how to throw their bodies around,
they are going to be They're going to be good.
I heard what you said. I'm just passing.

Speaker 6 (51:57):
Do you see there's new unis though, Yeah, with the
hockey left kind of, it was pretty pretty nice.

Speaker 3 (52:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (52:02):
I was particularly and I know you were as well
in that series, impressed with both goaltenders and how they did,
especially Urban for two and a half periods to start
that first game. And then Hasley of course came in
to relieve Sam unfortunately, but he did great, and then
Hasley in the second game got the job done.

Speaker 1 (52:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (52:20):
Look, I really liked seeing Sam Urban. You know, we'd
heard about him for so long when he committed a
couple of years ago, and what he was able to
do on the world junior stage for his country, and
you know, everything I hear about the guy behind the scenes,
I love him even more. Here's just like, yeah, like
a funny dude like that just believes that he can

(52:41):
do whatever and on the ice, and you know, he's
shown that so far, and I can't wait to see
how he continues to build over.

Speaker 7 (52:48):
The course of his career in this program.

Speaker 2 (52:50):
We gotta we gotta get him for our next show.
I think we're past due. And talking to his English
is pretty good. Yeah, he's yeah, I know, we just
got to come in a jolly mood. I'm sure he'll
he'll light up the camera and everything. All right, Cruz
Lucius our guest tonight. He's really been incredible.

Speaker 3 (53:05):
We know.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
The thing that I was thinking about this week is
like he's been great, but we know he still has
more less to give and in the tank, which is
like really fun for me at least to picture. But
just imagine where ASU would be without his hot start.
It's hard to hard to picture.

Speaker 6 (53:23):
Yeah, And again, like we were told when he came in,
like this guy could be our best player and one
of the best Sun Devils ever. And and you know,
it was really unfortunate with the injury. You know, it
kind of hampered the start to his Sun Devil career.
But you know, everything that we heard was like, Oh,
he's gonna have a really good summer, and then when
we came back, oh, he had a fantastic summer. And
so to see him and that hard work rewarded in

(53:48):
the first six games of the season is really really cool.
I think Beck adding him back in the lineup is
going to unlock those guys even further, and so the
flow of that is gonna be huge.

Speaker 7 (53:57):
I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (53:57):
I want to talk more about Beck in a moment here,
but first, just the the August Stana series unfortunately, I mean,
I know it's it's different, different scenarios, different teams, but
to me, and I mentioned this to you over the weekend,
it feels like that's gonna be one that, you know,
come January February, a su is gonna want back. Sure,
maybe not the exact same, but like that Air Force game,

(54:19):
that second Air Force game a season ago that they
really should have had and could have had. But look,
you know it, Obviously, face offs are good, they're they're
they're clearly skilled out there, but it only really matters
if you're getting shots on net and putting pucks in
the back of the net, and and they just aren't
at a high enough click.

Speaker 6 (54:36):
It just felt like something was just something was missingssing
was off, whether it was intensity, whether it was you know,
the simple ability to calmly get the puck out of
your zone with possession.

Speaker 3 (54:48):
Right.

Speaker 6 (54:48):
I think that's where Abrazi Bozer comes in and what
coach Powers mentions about his elite ability to break pucks out.
They did not show that from the defensive core that weekend.
And look as far as looking back and like should
have what that could be the one I think we're
gonna hear that every single loss because our team, the
team is that good and that talented where they think

(55:08):
they can and should win.

Speaker 3 (55:10):
Every hockey game. Yeah, and that's that's a good thing.
It is a good thing.

Speaker 2 (55:13):
It should be the mentality because you know you have
a fighting chance every single time, no matter who you're playing.
You could be playing you know, Western Michigan or Boston
University or whoever, or Augustana. It's going to be a
tough challenge, but you need to go out there with
the mindset that you can win every single game. Puck possession,
though you touched on it is so critical and they're
just not doing that well enough. Hopefully this bye week

(55:34):
really provides them an opportunity.

Speaker 6 (55:36):
To flesh all that and facing adversity is not necessarily
a bad thing because we especially early, right, one hundred percent,
especially this early, because we know how much everybody was
almost I don't want to say distraught, but like it
was kind of stunned and shocked a little bit, like wait,
we lost, and starting to create that fight toward never
feeling that again.

Speaker 3 (55:56):
Real quick, what do you think ASU needs to do
to win against Miami?

Speaker 6 (55:59):
Simply possessed the puck can be organized on exits from
the D zone and through the neutral zone.

Speaker 2 (56:04):
All right, Conference play begins next weekend. We certainly hope
you can join us four pm puck drop on Friday,
three pm Saturday. You can listen here on Fox Sports

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
