Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head
hockey coach Greg Powers live from the new Willy's Taco
Joint at the Vibe Hotel in Tempe on Fox Sports
nine ten and the Ihearts Radio. Welcome to the course
light first period of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach Powers,
the voice of Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Piley.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
One weekend down, seventeen to go for the Sun Devils
as college hockey is officially underway. The opening series of
the season didn't go Arizona State's way despite two impressive
second periods, but there's plenty of positives to take away
and the good news is that they can and will
only go up from here. Hi, everybody, welcome in to
Hell Frozen Over. This is season four, Episode two. I'm
(00:46):
Tyler Paley, and you're listening to your source for the
latest Sun Devil Hockey news and notes. We're streaming live
tonight on Fox Sports nine ten and the iHeartRadio app
and we are live Tuesdays before Home series from Willy's
Taco Joint on the roof top at the Vibe Hotel
right near campus in Tempe. Joining me tonight and every
show this year Arizona State head coach Greg Powers and
(01:07):
my broadcast partner Alex Coyle, coach. Before we dive into
a recap of the Penn State series, it's a new
week of practice. I know you've seen your guys out
there a couple of days since that weekend series. How's
your team looking and feeling with one weekend under its belt.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
It's good.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
It's good to get, you know, an idea of what
we have, you know, and with so many new guys
have the first games together under their belt. And then
now we're in full hours so we can spend as
much time as we need to with them to focus on,
you know, details and just more important stuff. So it
it's been good. The guys are upbeat. I thought they
had a really crisp, good practice today. You know, energies
(01:45):
up and optimism is up, and we're ready to move on.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
Cutting your teeth against a top five team to start
the season, especially with as many young guys as you have.
The young guys pretty much passed the test. What do
you see from them and their their first collegiate day.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
That was the biggest, I think the biggest silver lining
of the weekend. You know, and it's a tough one
to find sometimes when when you drop too heartbreakers in
the in the in the in the fashion that we
did where we felt like we definitely had Saturday's game
in hand, but and then a lead Friday going in
the third. But our young players were all really good.
You know, none of them made any any egregious mistakes.
(02:21):
They all contributed in a major way. You know, I
said today in media that I thought our best line
was the line of Morrell and and Nasher and Samue
Alfano did an unbelievable job. They were just they played
to our identity. They they focused on what our game
plan was. They executed at an incredibly high level. And
(02:41):
and and we love that that they're a young line
that that we're gonna be able to to to you know,
have in this program for for many years to come,
and and we couldn't be more excited about it. I
thought our young decor was really good and did what
they had to do to manage the game and didn't
make anything egregious happened that cost us. And so I mean,
look like when you have that many new faces and
(03:02):
they all performed the way they did against the team
that good there's a lot of really good to draw
from it.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, we're excited to talk to ty Nash coming up.
He's our guest tonight in the second period, So we'll
chat with him in just a few minutes. All right,
Penn State Game one, let's kind of recap if you would.
You guys find yourselves down by two after one, but
really a great comeback in the second period, three unanswered goals,
all by newcomers. How high was the morale in the
locker room after that first forty minutes when you guys
(03:29):
find yourselves up three to two.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Right, I mean, look, I think the morale is just
as high after the first it was. It was a
pretty evenly played period. They made a couple of nice plays,
and the McKenna kid played a nice couple assists. But
we knew, we knew if we could get that next one,
that one would become two or three.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
And it did. And that's what the guys went out
and dead.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
You know, they didn't they could have easily gone the
other way, and we found a way to take the lead,
and obviously went into both games after the second period
incredibly confident, you know, And and and we just mismanage both.
You know, it's as simple as that. And and at
the end of the day, like I said today, that's
not nobody but me. But it's great experience to UH
(04:11):
to have these guys draw from and be able to
go to film and show them what we need to
do differently with leads, especially at home, going to the
third period, situational management, puck management, gave managed game management overall,
so you know we're going to get better from it,
and and there's no other choice.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
The ability to close out games. How much of that
is physical execution and how much of that is mentality?
Speaker 6 (04:34):
It's all mentality.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I mean there's no there's no there's nothing physically this
team can't do or it's capable of. As it has
everything it needs from you know, the way it's built,
the way it's balanced, from talent standpoint, from a skill standpoint,
from a size, skating and everything.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
It's got everything it needs.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
But the mentality of knowing how to manage a game
in a third period against the team that's as dangerous
as they are, you know, it's it's something that you
have to really go through, I think, in order to
really perfect and we've gone through it. We know what
to do differently. We know it to do better and
and our guys will do that moving forward.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
In Game two, it was a stalemate after one period,
two goal lead for you guys after two, a slightly
larger margin of error perhaps in the third, but ends
up being a similar story to Friday's game in terms
of relinquishing the lead due to a couple of mistakes.
Walk us through what you saw as kind of the
turning point or turning points in game two.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, I mean Friday, Friday, it was just you know,
a really a really poor back check and sloppy neutral
ice that led to a goal for them, like right
away in the third, right, And so when a team
that dangerous and that returns that many veterans off of
fours and fourteen gets back into it, ties it in
the first minute. They were sharks in the water. And
(05:55):
then really we didn't recover. So that's that's how kind
of it went Friday. But Saturday, we we were in
complete control of the game. We were we were like that.
We were telling the guys like, hey, it's it's gonna
be death by a thousand paper cuts. We're gonna get
pucks in behind them, We're gonna four check, we're gonna
manage the game and we're gonna get our chances, and
we did, and we could have been up to you know,
three or four, you know, and so we we we
(06:17):
just felt like we were the better team five and five,
and video showed we were. So we felt really, really
confident going into that third period. And then it was hey,
let's draw on that experience Friday night and make sure
we get through these first five minutes. But we don't
sit back. We get pucks out, we get pucks in,
we hunt pucks, we get above them, and it's rense
and repeat, and we attack and we want to make
(06:38):
them push and cheat it a little bit and and
make mistakes that cost them and then before you know it,
you blink and you're up four and the game's over.
And we felt like that was the way it was
gonna go. We get a power play five minutes in
and and unfortunately we we we know, we didn't manage
the power play and you can't do up two and
in a game of home where you you at the
(07:00):
worst case, you just eat clock right, but at the
end of a power play, with I think forty seconds left,
we we dumped the puck, which we don't want to
do off an entry on a power play, and then
we make we make a play on the wall that
that gives them a rush against and and then we
had a bad gap and I didn't like the Globey
has There was four mistakes on that play. But if
(07:20):
you just manage the situation and you and you you
commit to not giving them any rush opportunity up to
a home, I think you get through that power play
and it's gonna be really tough for them to get
too on us. But it didn't happen. Again, they got
one probably one that they didn't earn, and and then
it was sharks in the water right, and and then
they're like, oh, we give them life. And they're coming
(07:41):
off a frozen four. They're confident, they're feeling good and
and the rest is history.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
With how much talent is on the team, I have
a feeling that you're going to be tinkering with lines
throughout the year just to find the right mix. One
tinker that you made heading into game two was moving
Sean mcgern up to first line center to play with
Bennett and with Cruise. That line got two goals. What
about that matchup works better with mcgirrin there than than
Potter necessarily.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Well, it's it's and I think I say this so
many times, like whatever our fans see and whatever you
guys see, as far as the line chart goes one, two, three, four,
it's not. It's not a pecking order. There's gonna be
there's going to be nights where our fourth line gets
more ice than what you see as our first. There's
going to be knights where the third gets more than
(08:26):
the second, and and so on and so forth.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
So it wasn't a demotion for Colin. It was it
was more of a.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Yeah, and there's college coaches that literally jumble them up
and nobody knows like, you know, like but whatever, like it.
It's it's not a first, second, third thing. It was
a chemistry thing, you know, and and uh.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
And it worked.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
You know, goo goo you know mcgerrn is is a
really good player and and you look like, you know,
Cruise had a five on five goal, Shim had a
five on five goal if they had the put pretty
much every time they are on the ice, probably eighty
percent of the time, they possess the puck incredibly well.
And I thought Carmelo could play really well with Potzi.
(09:11):
He's got speed on the wing, He's got ability to
make the play and find Potzy coming through the middle
with speed. So I think that there's some potential really
good chemistry there.
Speaker 6 (09:21):
You know.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
So I thought five on five, every line, every line
did really well. Every line had more scoring chances four
than against. Every line did exactly what we needed five
on five. Ice time was pretty balanced one through four,
which is what you want on night two especially, is
to use your depth and be able to wear them down.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
And we did wear them down. We did. They were tired.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
They really ride those top two lines. I felt like
our bench had more energy and more juice in their
legs because we have more depth and special teams got
us is that.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
I want to ask you about your goaltender this past weekend,
Connor Hasley. I know that after we spoke post game
on Friday and then even pregame on Saturday, you said
the loss but certainly wasn't on Connor, and I would
imagine you felt the same at least through two periods
on Saturday. Overall, what do you make of his performance.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
That has had five spectacular periods this weekend against a
really really good team. I think, you know if and
I'm critical of goalies, I always have been, well, yeah,
I'd like to see the first two back, right. I
don't like the shorty there's a rist shot from the
top of the circles where he didn't really get across
(10:32):
the midway point, so you shouldn't be too off balance.
I think that's a save that needs to be made.
I think he would agree with me. And then the
second goal was a blown face off assignment. Two guys
messed up off that face off assignment, but it barely
hit the back of the net, you know, So you know,
I think those are two goals that he wants back.
And I have no doubt like he's a really good goalie.
(10:55):
He's experienced, he's closed out those games. He's got him
under his belt with this team in front of him
now and on a big stage, and I think the
next time he's in that position to close out a
big game, he'll do it.
Speaker 5 (11:05):
You've mentioned Carmelo a couple of times, and especially the
speed really popped. He also had a couple of playmaking
playmaking opportunities late in Friday's game. What does he bring
overall with with his his hockey games.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
He's a really smart player.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
He's strong, he's fast, he's got a he's got a
complete game to him, you know, and and he's a
he's incredibly gifted. I think everybody saw that, like he
was kind of maybe one of the I don't want
to say unheralded or under the radar, but less spoken
about recruits in terms of outsiders looking at what we
were bringing in. He's so talented and and and you know,
(11:44):
he's such a good kid. You know, we're excited he's here.
He's got a huge future in front of him.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Yeah, he was really impressive this weekend as much as
last weekend. Obviously stings feels like you should perhaps have
at least a one in one record right now. Do
you look at this with a positive lens at all
in terms of your team going through adversity early within
a season and the opportunity to turn things around quicker
than you were able to.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Last season, Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
I think you don't have a choice but to move
forward and be positive about what was good overall with
the weekend, and that was We're only going to get better,
you know, We're only going to get better and better
and better every single day. And a team that made
the Frozen four that we turned every really you know,
veteran guy that got them there and added some really
(12:30):
really high end talent came in here and we had
them now going in both third periods. We have to
finish games. We have to play sixty minutes. We owe
it to the people to come and see us play
and pay money to see us play, to play a
full sixty minutes, and you will see that on Friday.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
We're excited to. Obviously, there was a non ASU related
reason that the NHL network chose to carry the games
this past weekend, but I'd imagine it was still a
positive to have coverage of your team on a global level.
How big was it to see and what was kind
of the reaction to seeing your team on a national
and international level.
Speaker 6 (13:03):
I haven't watched the broadcast.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
I don't think I can't watch them until I only
watch them when we win, man, I like to watch
the video that we have internally and when we lose.
But but I haven't watched them, you know. But but
it was a great opportunity, and it was a good
way to showcase our facility, a great way to showcase
our program, our incredible fan support on a national stage,
(13:26):
international stage. So it was great for us, you know,
and look like we're gonna move forward. We're gonna learn
from this, We're gonna get better from it. It's a
young team that's gonna be grizzled after the first two
weekends because of the great competition that we're playing. It's
gonna make us better in the long run, all those things,
but the fact of the matter is until we play
that team again, I'm gonna be pissed off.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Well, we'll preview the Icebreaker tournament and the August STANUS
series coming up in the third period. But how exciting
is it just to kind of set the stage for
it to host not only this one, but too overall
with the hockey class like those in season tournaments this
year at Mullen Areena with really some marquee schools coming
into town.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Yeah, it's an opportunity to win a trophy at home
and we don't take that lightly. To be able to
raise a trophy and win a trophy in front of
our fans is something that's a lot of fun. We've
done at the last two Desert Classics and it's a
great experience for our fans, for our team, and we
have two opportunities to do that this year in front
of our fans. Hopefully three if we can host NCCHC
(14:27):
playoffs all the way through. But it's a great opportunity.
And Notre Dame is a really good team, very talented,
very deep. First year coach in brock sheehan. He's going
to do a terrific job there. So it's gonna be
a tough, tough matchup on Friday. It's going to be
not much different in Penn State in terms of their
depth and their ability. And then Saturday, you know who knows.
(14:49):
I think Winnipeec has a good chance to come on
the top, but if we get a chance to play
it's another top ten team, it's gonna be a great opportunity.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
And then Fairbanks we know the last yep that.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
We're always there, always a pain in the button.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
So that's a good way to put it all, right, Well,
perhaps a tough start, but promising takeaways for Arizona State,
with one series under its belt, will preview the next
two weekends coming up in the third period. Up next,
Sun Devil forward and Arizona native ty Nash joins us
to introduce himself to Sundevil Nation. Our conversation. Right after
this quick break on the Mountain America Credit Union, Sun
Devil Radio network met up.

You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with sundevilhead hockey coach
Greg Powers. Let's start the Tobo cheek go Hard Seltzer
second period on Fox Sports nine to ten and the
iHeartRadio WAPP.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Thanks for sticking with us. Second period of Hell Frozen Over.
It's our hour long show talking all things Sun Devil
Hockey Alive on Tuesdays before home series this season from
Willie's Taco Joint. Here on the rooftop at the Vibe
Hotel in Temp B. So if you're not here like
so many tonight, we have a really great crowd tonight,
you can consider joining us. On Tuesday, October twenty first,
(18:24):
six pm. You can come, grab some delicious food and
talk college hockey with us. The road home isn't always easy,
nor is it guaranteed to be a straight line. That
was the case for ty Nash, who cut his teeth
in the Canadian Hockey League before moving on to the
University of Alberta last year. But then the rules changed
and home seemed within reach. Last weekend, his assist in
his first game as a Sun Devil seemingly capped off
(18:47):
his long journey back to where he calls home, and
Ty joins us now on Hell Frozen Over. Great to
see you. Thanks so much for being here tonight.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Yeah, thank you so much for having me so.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
First things first, despite the tough weekend against Penn State,
how much are you in enjoying your time as a
Sun Devil so far?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
You know, it's been so much fun.
Speaker 12 (19:04):
You know, obviously getting to come home and you know,
play in front of my parents and uh, you know
some former teammates logan morale. It's it's uh, you know,
being been an unreal experience, and you know, those first
two games and just seeing all the people I knew
in the crowd, uh, you know, cheering me on it was.
It was a great feeling and you know, we got
a great group of guys, so you know they made
it really easy to you know come in and and uh,
(19:24):
you know, it's just been a really great experience for me.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
You know, I I first met you back in the
team banquet, end of your banquet from last year. You
had just gotten to campus and just started to integrate
yourselves with the team. So so I assume you stayed
here all summer and and kind of trained with them,
or is it? Did you did you do anything fun
over this a little bit?
Speaker 12 (19:41):
Yeah, I went to Idaho with my family. We went
to the spot up there for about a month, and
then you know, came back end of end of July.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
I was working out with the.
Speaker 12 (19:50):
Team from you know May to uh you know started
started June, yeah, exactly exactly, and then uh, end of
July came around and you know I came back to
Arizona and you know really put my uh my foot
to the pedal and you know started to get get
in the hockey shape and you know running shape, and
you know, we had we had fitness testing and so
(20:11):
it was really important for me to you know be
in the best shape and the season started.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
So what were your first impressions this weekend? But but
overall of Mullet Arena, the crowd, all the maroon and
gold that you see around.
Speaker 12 (20:21):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's nothing like I've ever felt.
I was lucky enough to play in Edmonton and you know,
my last my last game as a twenty year old,
seventeen thousand sold out, and you know that didn't even
compare to what it felt like this weekend.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
It was unbelievable. No, not just like oh it was.
It was crazy.
Speaker 12 (20:36):
You know, obviously smaller rank, so it's it's a little
bit different. But you know it was when Alfie scored
that first goal, I've I've never had that feeling in
my life.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
So it was pretty awesome.
Speaker 6 (20:46):
That's so cool.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
I alluded to it a couple of moments ago, but
you had your first point as a Sun Devil in
the season opener, connecting with fellow Arizona native and longtime
friend Logan Morele. How special was that moment?
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Yeah, it was awesome.
Speaker 12 (21:00):
I mean, you know, obviously you want to be the
one to score the goal, but you know, getting to
see uh, getting to see Logan, you know, Barry that
and you know at home for first game, in the moment,
it was pretty awesome, and you know, to be a
part of it was even cooler. So you know, I
think that's just something we'll never forget. And you know,
it was a big goal, and that was the most
important part for me, was you know, we were able
(21:21):
to contribute and help get back that lead. So I mean, obviously,
like I said before, the crowd was unreal, and you know,
I was almost shaken when I came back to the bench.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
It was awesome.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
So he owes you one.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Now he's got to feed me back door or something.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
We'll be ready for that on Friday. Yeah, so much
talent with the group. A younger cores as well in
terms of collegiate eligibility, young being freshman. With eleven of them,
how is the group gelled together?
Speaker 6 (21:44):
So far?
Speaker 3 (21:46):
So good?
Speaker 12 (21:46):
I mean, you know from the second, you know, back
in May at the banquet, you know, all the guys
were so good to me, and you know, I didn't
get to be there when the freshman came in, but
they all gelled together, and you know when I came
back and end of July, we pretty much all the
boys were glued together already. We're hanging out every day.
(22:07):
We get to live together at in an apartment. The
older guys too, and the freshmen are at Vistas, so it's, uh,
you know, it's pretty easy to get along with a
lot of the guys here. And you know, I think
just being in that tight community, whether it's at Vista
or in the apartments, you're just always hanging out. And
I think that was a big part of us schooling together.
And you know, I think we have a really special group.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
It's so important both on ice off ice to be
that connected as a team. I know you have faced
some stiff competition through your your hockey journey, right, I
mean you you go up to the Canadian League, playing
in Edmonton, go to the University of Alberta. Now you're
playing in what is dubbed the best conference in college hockey.
How psyched are you for the challenge of playing some
(22:48):
of the best teams and best players in the sport
this season? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Super excited.
Speaker 12 (22:53):
I mean my year last year in U Sports, it's
you know, it's still got good competition, but it's nothing
like that NCHC. So you know, just to you know,
be able to compete with these guys every night, and
you know, just show show what I'm made of and
what this team is made of.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Is really exciting for me and and our team.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Especially about your move back to Arizona. Tell us how
how that experience was like when you got to call
presumably from Coach Powers, and how easy it was or
perhaps not easy to decide to come back home and
play at ASU.
Speaker 12 (23:26):
Probably one of the easiest decisions I made in my life. Obviously.
I love my teammates at the University of Alberta, all
really good guys, and so that that was probably the
toughest part for me, was leaving them after you know,
only one year with them and and you know, gluing
with them. But you know, ultimately it was probably the
quickest decision I've ever made in my life. Uh you know, Uh,
he got to see my dad at the airport, and
(23:48):
you know, they talked a little bit, and my dad
texted with me and he's just like, I think it's
going to happen, and I was like, I'm not sure.
And then you know, as soon as he called me
and and let me know that it was happening, I was,
you know, instantly committed and I was bought into this program.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Easiest call the Powers got to make last Yeah, side
Seal deliberate.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
You also, though, get to play in front of friends
and family, and specifically your parents. Of course. Your dad
with NHL time also worked with the Coyotes doing broadcast.
How cool is it to be able to play where
they can go to pretty much every game?
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker 12 (24:22):
I mean, you know, not having to hop on a
three and a half hour flight every time they want
to watch me come play. You know, they'd stay for
a couple of games and then have to leave. But
you know, I think my parents were obviously the most
excited for me. I think my mom was in tears.
You know that she got to stay here and watch
me play every weekend, and you know they'll be on
the road as well. They just they can't get enough.
(24:44):
And you know they love the game still, and my
dad especially, but yeah, you know they're just super excited
to be at every game this weekend.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
Gets see.
Speaker 12 (24:53):
Uh, you know, me and even Logan My dad coach
Logan growing up. So you know, it's just cool to
see it all kind of come back together. And I'm
I'm extremely lucky.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
You know, we've actually been looking into doing a three
man booth. So if your dad's interested, just let him know,
shoot me a text and we can make that happen.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Yeah. Yeah, I'm never gonna mention.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
That, but it'd be great to get somebody that actually
knows hockey.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Yeah, we got two guys who know nothing about it,
so it may as well get one who knows something. Uh,
the great Craig Morgan, who I trust. You know, he
wrote a story back in May about you coming to
a su and in there he mentions your your connection
with former Sun Devil captain current Buffalo saber Josh Done.
Tell us about your relationship with Josh and and perhaps
some wisdom that he's given you.
Speaker 12 (25:37):
Yeah, he's you know, he's been so great to me.
Obviously he's with Buffalo now, but you know I got
to see him three or four weeks ago before he
went off the training camp, and you know, I just said,
enjoy it and just you know, he knows what kind
of player I am and if I stick to that,
you know, I'll be in the lineup night in, night out.
And you know, obviously growing up with him, he was
always older, so we never really you know, got to
(25:57):
play together or connect on that level. But you know,
just throughout the last six summers, you know, getting the
skate together, and you know, Shane's obviously been so good
to me as well. Let me hop on the ice
with some of the you know, best players in the
NHL at the time and during COVID and you know,
my family's been so good to me. And you know,
Josh is a great mentor for me, and you know,
I'm always texting him and and uh, you know, seeing
(26:20):
how he's doing. And he's always texted me let me know,
you know, what to do and what not to do here.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
So yeah, I loves to the school.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, I mean he loved being.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Here absolutely absolutely, you know, so they you.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
Know, playing up in Canada. I know it's only been
two games here. But what's the biggest difference playing in
the NCAA versus U Sport and in the CHL.
Speaker 12 (26:41):
Yeah, i'd say that, you know, for junior, I'd say
it's definitely the size. Obviously, there's some really good skilled
players there that I played against, and uh, you know
U Sports, I'd say it's the the skill and the speed.
Obviously everyone's kind of same age as they are here.
And guys are you know, I'm pretty much the same
side are maybe even bigger. But I think just that
(27:02):
speed was definitely something I had to adjust to. And
you know, I felt fine this weekend, but even the
first practices with our team, you know, I felt a
little bit behind just because of you know, where I'd
been playing and and the skill level.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
But you know, now that these two.
Speaker 12 (27:16):
Games are over with, I know I can you know,
be in the lineup and play well night in and out.
So yeah, I'd say just honestly, the skill and the
speed of the of the game.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
It's a good barometer too, now that you have these
two games under you see, and the and Penn State
being one of the best teams in the nation. I mean,
it's it's good that that is kind of your starting point.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
If you will.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
H what what do you see, guys when you look
at the team overall, the team's biggest strengths and perhaps
biggest areas of opportunity moving forward.
Speaker 12 (27:44):
Yeah, I mean, I'd say our biggest strengths. You know,
we got a lot of size, a lot of grit.
But then also you know up front with Jimmy Cruz Potzi,
all super skilled players and you know, also guys you
can you know, count on in the defensive zone, I guess, so,
you know, I think I think.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
They're really skilled players.
Speaker 12 (28:06):
And obviously our back end is super strong as well,
Miss and Bozer. This weekend was was unfortunate, and you know,
well back soon, but you know, young decor, but you
know they're, uh, they did really well this weekend and
you know, I think we can build on that.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Coach has mentioned multiple times that he felt that your
line was the best line of the weekend. What worked
well for you? And and how have you been able
to mesh so quickly?
Speaker 12 (28:32):
Yeah, I think it's just you know, playing our role.
You know, first game, wasn't sure how much we were
going to play, but you know, we're the fourth line.
We got to create energy, you know, be good guys
on the bench, you know, blocking shots, making hits. So
I think we just kind of stuck to that, and
you know, everything else fell into place. Obviously, Elfi's scoring
that goal and the and the second was big for
our confidence. And then you know same with Mo getting
(28:55):
those back to back. It felt like nothing could stop
us and you know, we belong here and and uh yeah,
so I think that you know, just sticking tough what
we're good at. Off He's obviously big dude, and Ma
was super strong, and you know, I got speed. So
I think just those combined it really helped us as weekend.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
It really worked. It really did. Before we let you
go time and I know, I trust you want to
eat some tacos, which you can't blame the National Taco
Dame by the way it is it. Yeah, I didn't
actually know that. That's cool anyway. The ice breaker is
this weekend, you guys obviously have Notre Dame up first,
and then the winner or loser of Alaska Fairbanks and
quit apiak. I trust your focus is on this Notre
(29:34):
Dame game, but more so, as we've heard for seasons
upon seasons, it's on your yourselves, right, you guys are
focused on yourselves. With that being said, what what do
you guys need to do to go out there get
a win advance to the championship game on Saturday.
Speaker 12 (29:47):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's just uh, you know,
mixing the second period of the first game and the
first two periods of the second game together, you know,
playing a full sixty minutes first game, first and third
not our besteriods and you know the second game. Obviously
we played well for the first two, but I think
just learning how to you know, close out games or
you know, start games better. And yeah, I mean it's
(30:11):
it's obviously easier said than done, but sure, I think
just you know, just having a little more trust and
maybe not obviously notre damn great team, but you know,
not giving them too much respect in the third period
where you're kind of staying back and and you know,
just trying to chew out the clock. So I think,
you know, for us, that's that's kind of what we're
focused on.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Well, we look forward to seeing it. Ty Nash will
be a big contributor for years to come. And let's
be honest, there's nothing all of us love seeing more
than an Arizona kid thrive right here at home. So
we sure are glad you're here. We appreciate you spending
some time with us, enjoy some tacos, and we will
see you on Friday.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
So awesome, Thank you, guys, So good luck this weekend.
Speaker 2 (30:46):

We appreciate everywhere we've done this show, but the food
here in the rooftop you can't beat this place.

I think we'll stick around for a couple more weeks
shows this season. Just as a reminder, Tuesdays before home
series six to seven PM. Our next one is Tuesday,
October twenty. First you can come grab some tacos, hang
out with Coach Powers and our Sun Devil Hockey guests
before we dive into the next two series. I do
want to ask you about special teams. One power Play
(34:28):
goal on twelve to ten Shorty on Saturday. Of course,
your penalty kill went four for eight. I know it's
a small sample size, but are you making any adjustments
on special teams.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
I think that's where the immaturity of our roster really shine, obviously,
and where the most chemistry needs to develop in order
for special teams to really click and win games. And
you felt it, you saw it, you felt it. Our
expected goals in the power Play over the weekend were
more than double to what theirs were. They just have
(35:00):
you know, one world class player and a lot of
guys back that had a lot of chemistry and found
a way to capitalize when it mattered most and we didn't,
you know, And I think that's again where our immaturity
really really showed this weekend. So huge focus this week,
a lot of film, a lot of reps on the ice,
and we'll get it right.
Speaker 6 (35:18):
We always do. We had the top power play in
the country last year for a.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Reason, and we just got to get these guys bought
into how.
Speaker 6 (35:25):
They need to do things to be successful.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
And we will, Yeah, no doubt about it. We always
just look forward to the power play. It's like you
guys are going to score every time you go on me.
Speaker 6 (35:32):
Both all right.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Time for our weekly injury report. We know Brazen Bosa
remains out. What's the update on him and do you
have any other injuries heading into.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
The week, we'll we're hoping bos will be out for
only two more games. I think worst case scenario it'll
be four, and then we got the bye week after
Augustana and he'll be back for Miami worst case, but
there's a good chance he might be back for Augustana.
So we're hoping that he is. He's skating, he's standing
in shape, you know, so we're hoping to get him back.
It's an upper b injury that he's just got to
(36:01):
get right before we put him back out there. He's
going to be you know, I mean, he was definitely
going to be looked at and will when he's back
as one of our most dependable, pop moving guys, so
he can kill penalties, He's going to help everywhere.
Speaker 6 (36:14):
So we're excited to get him back. Everybody else is good.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
That's great, great to hear.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
On the goaltending side of things, you mentioned that we
might see both goaltenders this week. What's going to go
into that decision choosing which one goes.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
When learn more about our opponents. You know, we don't
have a ton of film to go on. Obviously, Notre
Dame's going to be drastically different than they have been
in the past, and they're going to play differently than
they did with coach Jackson. You know, we have one
exhibition game of tape of them to really jaw upon,
and then you know, Quinnipiac and Fairbanks will get a
good look at live obviously on Friday, which is which
(36:49):
is a great opportunity before we play. So it's just
you know, who's going to match up with who, But
the plan is to get both of them and this
weekend IRBs is really really good and we're excited to
show people how good he is and talented he is,
and he deserves to go.
Speaker 6 (37:02):
I don't want to sit him for in a row.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Have his pads arrived?
Speaker 6 (37:06):
They haven't, which is crazy.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Can you share that story?
Speaker 6 (37:10):
I don't know, you know, I guess, I don't know.
I won't. I won't.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
I won't get into too much detail because it doesn't
make me happy. So but but they're hopefully going to
be here any day.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
That's I mean, just crazy that they still haven't arrived.
All right, let's uh, let's dive into the icebreaker. First.
Notre Dame one of the biggest teams in college hockey
this year in terms of weight, like, they are a
big team, another big ten opponent, high expectations this year.
What's your scouting report on the Irish?
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Yeah, I mean, they're gonna be really good. They've always
had a ton of talent. They recruit really well with
that facility.
Speaker 6 (37:41):
And in that conference. It's it's not tough.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Obviously an incredible institution, and they have a young, up
and coming, really talented head coach that's gonna an alumni.
He's a proud alum and and he's going to get
that program ripping and rorin at a really high level
and it's not going to take long. So they're gonna
want to come out in the first game and and
win a game, you know, and in the kind of
new era of Notre Dame hockey. So it's gonna be
(38:05):
a tough, tough challenge against another Big ten team again,
one that's going to make us better regardless of the result.
But we feel like if we play sixty minutes the
way we know we can will beat everybody we play.
Speaker 5 (38:17):
It's another one of those Big ten teams returning the
trip from the year that you guys spent playing over
there on the road, playing all of those you know,
I guess for non hockey fans, the name brand schools
and the logos, I guess to build up the excitement.
How cool is that for the fans to get to
see it.
Speaker 6 (38:35):
It's great. I mean, we grinded it out.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
That team that lived on the road for four and
a half months during COVID and played in the Big
Ten and lived in a hotel during the pandemic. It
was a crazy, crazy experience that we'll never forget. The
ones that went through it and we don't have any
players left on our team that actually went through that
season with us, but it's one that the group that
did will always be close to because.
Speaker 6 (38:57):
Of what we went through.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
But part of that deal with the Big Ten that
everybody owed us a trip back. We got Minnesota checked
off and Michigan checked off. This year we have obviously
Penn State came back, notre names coming back for the
ice breaker in Ohio State to to really you know,
get name brands in Mullet as we we we wanted
to open upmull it over the first four or five
(39:18):
years and give our fans name brands to come see.
And we still have Michigan State in Wisconsin and go.
So it's it's it's great.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
So we're expecting them in the next you know, let's
say three years.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
Yea, the trip.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
Okay, the other two teams that you could face Saturday
are either Alaska Fairbanks or Quinnipiac. The bob Kats obviously
a recent national champion Alaska team you're very familiar with.
We all know how that last game you guys faced
off went down. What should we know about both of
those teams?
Speaker 4 (39:46):
Quinnipiac's really good they're they're they're I think they're a
legitimate top five team. They're gonna be structured, they play hard,
they're old rands and unbelievable coach.
Speaker 6 (39:55):
He's a good buddy. He actually flew in tonight to Arizona.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
He's not at the show.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
So he's not at the show. I know, I know,
well he doesn't land untill nine. But so it we're excited.
We're excited to have them in our building. Alaska is
a great program. They've given us fits through the years.
They compete, they stay above punks.
Speaker 6 (40:14):
Eric does a great job with them. And then obviously
Notre Dame's Notre Dame, so it's a great field.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
Originally the field was supposed to be Notre Dame Quinnipiac
in North Dakota, and that was agreed to. But then
when we joined the NCCHC, we obviously talked to North
Dakota and they thought it was best that we got
a team that wasn't in our conference to come play.
So that's that's when the Fairbanks thing happened.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
They got spooked, Yep, they definitely got spooked. I you
mentioned Ran Pecknold, head coach of Quinnipiac I know you've
learned a lot from him over over your coaching career
and the way he's what he's been able to do
with the Bobcats. What what do you admire most about
the way he coaches?
Speaker 4 (40:51):
It's very his parallels are very similar. You know where
he started when they were at Division III in a
community ice rink and brought them to Division one and
has turned them into a program that that's really in
the tournament. And he's I think he is now the
after Rich Gotkin retires after this year. Mercers ran as
the longest tenured coach in Division one hockey, so he's
(41:13):
been there close to thirty years. So he's been in
a long time, right and and I just I just
respect the program that he's built. It took him a
long time to build it into what it is, but
he's done it. And and they're they're a team that's
there every year right to the very end. They never quit,
They play hard, they play a really structured style of hockey.
(41:34):
And uh and hopefully our fans got to see him
play this weekend.
Speaker 5 (41:37):
I know a lot of I know a lot of
work went into hosting the icebreaker. What does that mean
to college hockey And what does that mean to to
you guys to be able to host this tournament.
Speaker 6 (41:47):
Yeah, it was. It was something that we want.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
You have to put in a bid for it, and
it's a very complex process, you know, putting it in
the bid and winning it with College Hockey, Inc. And
we wanted to showcase mullet and and do it with
teams that plan in that tournament. It's a great tournament.
Teams fight to get into it because it's exempt. So
these games that while they count for rankings and they
(42:08):
count for statistics and they count for everything, they don't
actually count against their thirty four game game counts. So
that's why we have thirty six games this year. So
when you get into the icebreaker, even as a visiting team,
it's like two bonus games, right. So teams really like
that and want to play in it because of that,
and we definitely, you know, had a lot of teams
(42:30):
to pick from.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
I don't want to get too far ahead, but we
won't have another show until we're back from South Dakota
for a series with August Stanna.
Speaker 6 (42:38):
Gonna miss you guys.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Yeah, well we're gonna be there with Oh that's right,
you're like, god darn, it's been a couple of years
since you guys have faced the Vikings. They were good
last year eighteen thirteen and then four. How big will
that first road test of the season be.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
For your Yeah, I mean they're gonna be fired up.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
It's their home openers, and they're they're you know, got
a brand name coming in from the NCCHC. The fans,
I'm sure are going to be great. Garrett's done an
unbelievable job with that team. They've been competitive since day one,
and they'll probably.
Speaker 6 (43:05):
Compete to win the c c CHA this year.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
So they're they're gonna be a really really good team
for us to play.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
In terms of jocking for postseason position, there's a little
bit of a change in terms of how the at
large teams are going to be decided. What is the
difference between pair wise and and NPI as it called.
Speaker 4 (43:23):
Yeah, I think it's just it's just updated, probably updated
more accurate math. You know, it's going to reward quality
wins and strength to schedule a little bit more. It's
going to calculate overtime wins and losses differently, and and
and give teams a little bit more credit for getting
to overtime and losing in three on three, which which
(43:45):
I think is the right thing to do. You know,
I would like to see it go back to just
five minutes of five on five and then you know,
the winner of the five on five gets one hundred percent,
the loser gets zero, and then have it to go
to three on three.
Speaker 6 (43:57):
But you know, it is what it is.
Speaker 4 (43:59):
So you know, and I get we want to mimic
the NHL and be as close to the NHL, and
we should and we do, but we only play thirty
four games. Rather every game is so important, and so
to lose so much credit for going into and battling
for sixty minutes and then losing in a completely different
style of game in three on three just doesn't make
(44:21):
sense to me.
Speaker 6 (44:21):
So they fixed that a little bit. I still think
it's got.
Speaker 4 (44:24):
A ways to go, but I think it's a little
bit more fair for the losing team. But uh yeah,
so those are the biggest differences. I think it's just better.
Updated math.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Coach, Before we let you go, I'll make this our closer.
And I know you had some nice words a couple
of weeks ago, but this will be the last weekend
with your sports information director, Paide Shakolt. She's been with
you for what four or five years now, you've known
her much longer than that. We've known her for a
long time as well. Paige and I went to school together.
Will miss her dearly, but she has a great opportunity
(44:55):
to go on and advance her career. What would you
tell the fans who may not know who paid how
much she's meant to this?
Speaker 4 (45:01):
Yeah, I think that that's just she's indicative of so
many people behind the scenes that nobody knows about, right,
and that make the son of a hockey kind of
world go round. And she's been unbelievable in building our
brand on social media and making the guys look really
good and and and and showing you know, our personality
and really as a program, it's a player centric program.
(45:24):
It's all about the player. It will always be about
the player, and and it's social media is such a
good way to expose that and and reflect that, and
Page has just perfected it in every way. And our
guys lover she's part of the team. She's part of
a program. She always will be. We've seen her grow
up from student into beautiful, smart, successful Uh young lady
(45:48):
and she's gonna just or she does in life.
Speaker 6 (45:52):
So we're really proud.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
Of her, really really proud. But it's a bittersweet time.
So uh, we'll cherish the the last weekend we have
with page, that's for sure. Coach Greg Power with the
latest here on Hell Frozen Over His Sun Devil's hit
the ice for the ice breaker this Friday at seven

On the rooftop over time on Hell Frozen Over Tyler
Paley and Alex Coyle gets dark here fast time a year,
doesn't it? Like just I mean, I feel like it was.
I don't know. We were sweating out here before the
show and now it's pitch blackout here. But luckily we've
got some good lights lighting us up. So all right,
look tough start for the team. I don't think there's
any way to sugarcoat that. But like you and I
(50:00):
said several times over the weekend, you can only go
up from here, right, and you'd rather have the adversity
come in my opinion, early in the year, be able
to write the ship as soon as possible.
Speaker 5 (50:09):
Yeah, right, And as we mentioned this past weekend, it
sets a baseline as well on what you can improve
upon with the film and and getting back and getting
some of the line matchups well. I thought the adjustment
to add Sean mcgern to the line with Bennett and
Cruz obviously worked well and it looked a lot more balanced.
And so you know, different things are going to be
(50:31):
adjusted throughout the entirety of the season, and it's it's
only up from there.
Speaker 2 (50:35):
Getting Brazen Boser back to I know it won't be
this weekend, but that'll be that'll be massive Penn State, though.
I mean, look, they're as good of a team as
as you will see all year, right, they deserve a
lot of credit, and I think it's fair to say that,
you know, in our humble opinions, Gavin McKenna is the
real deal.
Speaker 5 (50:50):
Right Yeah, he he didn't like obviously, he had some
really really good highlights and and like the the ceiling
is is through the roof, especially with the goal that
he had to of course win the game. He's gonna
be a special player and I can't wait to see
him as he continues to improve.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
I know you and I were really impressed and high
on a lot of the newcomers this year, right. You
mentioned Sean mcgerrn, Logan Morele had a goal, ty Nash
where we talked to, had an assist, Sam Alfano had
the opening goal of the season for Arizona State, and
then Carmelo Crandall, who didn't find the score sheet but
he would have if he didn't get tripped by Aron Man.
That was tough. I even I asked Powers about that
(51:31):
and he was like, he just kind of shook his
head on Saturday before that game. But yeah, I mean
he made his presence known out there on the ice.
I think they all stand out as really top tier
potential for Arizona State this season.
Speaker 5 (51:45):
Yeah, and I think going into these games, I wanted
them to stand out in the way of effort, in
the way of grinding, in the way of being hard
to play against, and I think all of them did,
especially Carmelo with you know, it felt like he was
always behind the net making some sort of play as well.
Obviously what the fourth line did on Friday night getting
on the score sheheet, but also setting a tone into
a really good start on Saturday. Look, there's so much
(52:09):
young talent on the team, and it's great to see
them immediately make an impact and look like they're ready
for the level.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Well, and that last point is something I want to
focus on because you know, we were told all off
season in our conversations that this is a bigger team, right, Sure,
this is bigger, and you know we can look at
you know, their height and weight and whatever and draw
our assumptions, even look at old game tape, and I
know we did that, But then to see them out
on the ice, particularly Noah pal big guy, right, Sam
(52:37):
Alfano big guy, even Carmelo Cranda, like that big presence
out there. That's something that Arizona State largely was missing
last season.
Speaker 5 (52:44):
It was and when I first heard, oh were like
big team, big team, big team, and look, okay, then
that means it's got to be a slow team, right, No,
he had both and and the balance. I think we've
heard Coach Powers mentioned that multiple times was really on
display last weekend, and especially in the first two periods
of Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (53:02):
Carter Hasley, goaltender for Arizona State. We asked Coach Powers
his thoughts. I thought he was spot on personally. I
mean five really good periods. I mean we were remarking
through definitely the first and even the second period of
game two on Saturday that you know, he picked up
right where he left off in terms of shutouts. Led
the nation in shutouts last year, right with eleven three
in the tournament. He was really impressive. And yeah, look,
(53:26):
we all have bad periods, right, bad twenty minute stretches
of our lives. But I think for five of the
six periods he was really good in as advertised.
Speaker 5 (53:35):
And I think anytime at this level you go into
a weekend and you get five at a six good
periods from your or even better than good, great periods
from your goaltender. You're going to win a lot of
hockey games that just didn't happen because of the matchup
and because of a lot of other scenarios that you know,
as he mentioned, he didn't manage the puck well enough
(53:56):
on the power play and then all of a sudden,
four straight mistakes lead to one goal. Right, But but
he's gonna be really good. I'm excited to see possibly
Sam get his first start here this weekend, and and
add on to the great talent between the.
Speaker 2 (54:10):
Pipes, we've just been waiting so long to see him.
I'm excited to uh to see him in action Notre
Dame on Friday in the icebreaker should be a great one.
It's a good litmus test for ASU after Penn State
and a massive conflict of interest for you. Well, I
wouldn't say that, but look, you grew up as a fan,
did you know he's still I grew up going to
(54:30):
be clear to football games as long as I can remember,
beating Michigan almost every time I went, beating USC almost
every time I went. But no, but again, the the
it's an interesting spot that the program's in with with
with Notre Dame being a brand new head coach following
up a legend in their program and excited to see
what they bring. But have again a name brand program
(54:53):
in to get some of the fringe hockey fans out
here to to learn what Arizona State Hockey is all about.
Notre Dame, it's either Alaska Fairbanks or Quinnipiac. And and
look Alaska not a bad team by any means. They're independent, yes,
but they are. They are really talented, right. They are
typically among the top one or two teams of those
(55:16):
independence fighting for a tournament and the epitome of hard
to play against.
Speaker 5 (55:19):
Yes, we hear every single year of what what coach
powers wants to seem to be.
Speaker 2 (55:23):
Yeah. And then you have Quinnipiac, which is I mean
a powerhouse out of the ECAC. Really just a perennial
program that's going to make the tournament just about every year. Yeah.
And they beat BC this weekend.
Speaker 5 (55:34):
Yeah, and look so much talent and they've won a
national championship and in a place where I was going
to say.
Speaker 2 (55:40):
Names as we wrap up tonight. Overall, just curious on
your thoughts of what ASU needs to do to find
success these next two weekends.
Speaker 5 (55:47):
Look, I think it's just simply execution and being able
to manage the moment right. I don't think there's any
gap with skill. I don't think there's any gap with
ability or any gap with expectation. I think it's just
going out there and simply playing the right version of
hockey and managing the moment.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
We've got a fun in season tournament on tap. We
hope you can join us seven pm puck drop Friday
and Saturday for the ASU games. You can watch both
