(00:27):
Frozen Over Now alongside Coach Powers thevoice of Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Paley,
we begin tonight show with a simplefact. Six weeks into the season,
the Arizona State Sun Devils have thebest record in college hockey. They are
three and one against ranked opponents, eight and one at home, have one
of the best power play units andscoring offenses, and are downright fun to
(00:50):
watch. You may be cautiously optimistic, and to that I'd say fair enough,
but I challenge you to hop onthe bandwagon now and support the Sun
Devils as they head into another toughstretch with plenty at steak Hi. Everybody,
welcome into season two, episode fourof Hell Frozen Over Live tonight from
our new Cold Beers and Cheeseburger's locationin Arcadia. For the next hour here
(01:11):
on Fox Sports nine to ten andstreaming on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Tyler
Paley, the radio play by playbroadcaster of Sun Devil Hockey. Happy to
have you along for the ride aswe discussed the team's latest news and notes
and get you ready for another weekof college hockey. Joining me tonight and
every other week this year is ArizonaState head coach Greg Powers and my broadcast
partner Alex Coyle. Good to seeyou both, Coach, How you doing
(01:34):
after I just said you guys havethe best record in college hockey? Tide,
but still the best record in collegehockey? That's pretty good. That's
pretty good. Did you consider thewood could have should a game? It
could be even better. We blewtwo three goal leads in both losses,
so not that I'd been dwelling onthat a all listen, hindsight is twenty
(01:55):
twenty. But other games I supposecould have gone the other way. So
we'll take it all right. Anotherpair of winning weekends in the rearview mirror
for your Sun Devils. You're tiedfor that best record in college hockey.
Two thirds of your schedule still tobe played, But how good does it
feel to be good? It feelsgood. It feels good to be good,
you know. I think the bestthing about this team is we know
(02:19):
we can be better, and weknow we can be better. I think
our players know that they want toget better. Today was probably the best
practice we've had all season. Theyreally competed and went hard at each other,
which is what we're gonna have todo Friday against a very good team
coming in. Your hockey team, along with the volleyball team, has become
the sport at Arizona State that fansare really rallying around. Obviously, football
(02:44):
has had kind of a rebuilding season, basketball just getting started. How much
pride do you take in being theteam kind of leading the charge and how
much responsibility is it to win forthe Sun Devil fans, It's a huge
responsibility. They support us so well, packed the mullet every night, and
we want to perform for them, and our guys want to want to play
well for them, so they keepcoming back and continuing to support us.
(03:07):
And they've driven a lot of reallygood outcomes for us, you know,
and they're easy to play for andin front of, and our guys love
when we're get to play a homewe're nine and one a home and that's
pretty impressive. And speaking of volleyball, what a job jjman Neil has done.
Just if he's not National Coach ofthe Year, then I don't know
what to tell you. But theturnaround in just one season is remarkable,
(03:31):
you know, And I don't thinkenough people are talking about it. No,
those ladies are so impressive. Theyhave put together a fantastic record,
and again they defend home home court, right, yeah, court. I'm
so used to saying guys. Butall right, I promise we'll bring Alex
in here in a minute. ButI do want to recap for a moment
how the last two weeks have gonesince our last episode back on November seventh.
(03:51):
At that time, you had justbegun an eight game homestand and swept
Stone Hill. Then the number twoDenver Pioneers came to town and Arizona State
had a game for the Ages onFriday. Denver kept taking the lead,
but the top Sun Devil line hadan answer every time. Nine points in
all five goals in regulation came fromLucas Dillinger, Ty Jackson, and Dylan
Jackson, the latter of whom hada hat trick. It took overtime to
(04:15):
decide a winner, and the captain, Tyler Gratt and sealed the deal to
secure a six to five win overthe Pios for just the second time ever.
It's hard not to be excited bya victory like that. That was
exciting. That was one of thebest moments in our young history. I
mean it, it was. Itwas just a slug fest, you know,
it was. It was so impressedby how our players just kept swinging
(04:35):
back, you know. I meanwe we grabbed the lead one nothing,
and then they kept going up onus, and then you know, within
two minutes we would tie it everytime. So our guys just kept swinging
back harder and we threw the lastpunch and got a win. So it
was fun. I mean, theplace absolutely exploded when Grat scored that goal,
and it was it was very similarto the Minnesota win last year.
(05:00):
You know, similarly ranked teams fora second blue blood programs, same score,
same jersey. So it was itwas a ton of fun, but
more at stake for this one waymore at steak. But last year there
was a lot of steak at thatpoint. That's fair, but yeah,
you're right, I mean it movedus to seven one on one, and
I think what it does is itjust it shows our guys early that we
(05:20):
can play with anybody, and especiallywhen we play the right way. You
come off of that high and onenight later, you get out to a
three goal lead, as you mentionedearlier, then Denver starts to roll.
All of a sudden, that leadsevaporated. They get I'll go out and
get the win. Getting a winagainst Denver's great obviously put you in position
(05:41):
to stack those come tournament time. But is there an extra frustration or disappointment
knowing the opportunity that you had tosweep them? Yeah, for sure.
I think that's what I love aboutour team is you know, we didn't
have a guy in the room afterthat game patting themselves on the back for
splitting against Denver. We were genuinelyupset that we didn't sweep them. We
felt like we should have, withno disrespect towards them because they're a hell
(06:03):
of a team, but we hada three goal lead at home. It
was one that we earned. Wewere playing incredibly well and they got some
bounces and you know it didn't happen. You know, obviously the score was
not indicative of the game. Itwas a one goal game with under two
minute, couple umpty netters and astinker. But we moved on from it.
Guys rebounded, got to sleep lastweekend, and off we go.
(06:25):
I don't know that I personally learnedanything more in that series about Denver that
we didn't know from years past.I know you always say focus on us,
and I totally get it, andI respect that, But I'm curious,
since you've now played Denver twelve timesover the years, if you feel
like you have a handle on whatyou'll see from them every matchup as you
become conference rivals come next year.Yeah, I mean, I think we
(06:46):
have a pretty good idea of whatthey do and how they play, and
really how good they are with thepuck. That's that's what really separates them
from most of other teams in collegehockey, is how dynamic they are with
the puck and all the movement theyhave in the offensive zone, and how
well connected and surgical they are againsteverybody that they play when they have possessions.
(07:08):
So that's what the way they play, and everybody knows it. It's
no secret. David does a greatjob with them. And we're looking forward
to play the more. They're obviouslyscheduling intricacies based on being an independent versus
being in a conference when you canplay big time opponents. But playing a
team like Denver that early in theseason, can that help you learn about
(07:28):
your team a little faster? Ithink so. I mean, we've played
some really good hockey teams early.Yeah, you know, Northern Michigan's are
a lot better than what their recordis. They're starting to win. They've
won four straight. They just swepta very good Fairbanks team. Obviously,
Merrimack's a hell of a team.They got back Alex Jefferies. They're going
to continue to win a lot ofgames, and I think you'll see them
ranked sooner than later. And thenDenver obviously is Denver. So yeah,
(07:53):
we've learned a lot about our group. We love what we have. We
really believe in what we have. Most importantly, they believe in themselves and
each other. And we're excited fora really, really tough weekend coming up,
which will preview more in the thirdperiod. But I do want to
talk about this past weekend against AlaskaAnchorage. The sun Devils never trailed in
Friday night's contest, but also neverled by more than one goal. That
(08:16):
top line continued its production. Wesaw some offensive explosiveness from Tim Lovell.
He had a goal in two assists. The goaltending was solid, frankly on
both sides that night, but yoursun Devils were able to hang on for
a four to three win. Youdidn't seem awfully impressed after that game despite
the win. What were your takeawaysfrom Friday? I just didn't like how
we played. I didn't think weplayed to the identity that we established for
(08:39):
ourselves, you know before the seasonstarted, which was fast and hard and
difficult to play against. I didn'tthink we were hard to play against at
all. I didn't like how weweren't finishing checks, we weren't for checking,
we were passive, and it justit just was contagious, you know,
up and down the lineup, andwe found a way to win.
And that's what I think. What'snice about our team is we've gotten some
(09:01):
wins when we haven't played at ourbest or even near our best, because
they have, they have they havegenuine belief that they can, they can
and will find way. And againthat's just resiliency we have a resilient group
of kids that that really believe ineach other and at the end of the
day that that is always going tobe better than anything you can you can
drum up, you know. Sothey responded incredibly well Sunday though. Yeah,
(09:26):
in that Sunday game, the fourcheck was tremendous, specially in that
second period. The defense did it'sup and TJ ultimately getting the shutout felt
like a team shutout. Was thatyour best sixty minute performance of this season?
I think so? I think Ithink it probably was from just the
you know, how we want toexecute and what our identity is, being
fast, being hard. I mean, they don't think they got the puck
(09:48):
out of their own the entire secondperiod, so, you know. And
and they were limited to ten shotsprobably no scoring chances through two periods.
So it was a really good, solid team effort. And and TJ was
good when he had to be.I thought their goalie held him in it.
It could have been a five tosix goal game after the second period.
He was really good, but theguy stuck with it and found a
(10:11):
way to win. And that firstperiod had their goaltender, Gregor Ross was
was kind of shaky a little bit, but then in the second period he
really turned on. I agree withyou, how strange was it for you
and the team to play on Fridaynight, skip Saturday, then play at
one pm on a Sunday for thefirst time out. It was different,
It was interesting. I think thatwhat it did was really give us more
(10:33):
time to prepare and most importantly andreflect on what we didn't like about Friday's
effort and some tweaks we wanted tomake, and changes we wanted to make,
and things we wanted to focus on, and and the guys you know,
executed. So it's not going tobe the norm. You know,
obviously, we don't want to gohead to head with football, and with
the nature of how they schedule anddon't really know their game times until a
(10:56):
week in advance, if we canstay away from going ahead to head,
we will. It would have workedout both days this week, the Saturdays
at one thirty kickoff, when wecould have played at seven. But it
is what it is. We knowwe're going to play Sunday, and and
I don't think Providence or Anchorage arethat upset about having to stay in Arizona
and an extra Yeah, exactly,Yeah, get out of the weather.
(11:16):
For sure. You mentioned reflect andI think there were a big differences in
the style of play from Sunday andFriday. When you go back and look
at the tape, look at someof the numbers from the game, what's
the first thing you look at andis it something that can be quantifiable or
is it just simply eye test?Well, it's it's it's everything. It
(11:37):
was it was just effort, itwas energy, it was it was you
know, being difficult to play against. And you know we we were passive.
We were passive, and it wasa mindset. And then Sunday we
were We were really good on thefore check, we were incredible. We
smothered them. Our guys were huntingpucks. Everybody wanted to puck on Sunday.
It was it was how we wantour players to play and how we
(12:00):
want our team to look for ourfans and our guys at a great job.
You went with a more veteran lineupthat was intentional. I believe you
only started two freshmen in Helm andin Anthony Dowd. What was your thought
process there to kind of go outand secure that win. How did guys
(12:20):
like Kyle Smoll and react to thatchange, because he's been playing pretty well
so far this season. It wasit was a challenge for our veteran guys.
You know, it was a mustwin game. We had to win
that game. If we're going togo to an NCAA tournament, you have
a chance to sweep a team likeAnchored, you have to do it.
It was one that we couldn't letslip away. And and you put the
(12:41):
onus on your veteran players to getit done, and they got it done
in spades. I was really proudof them, in happy for him.
Our freshmen have done a great job, kids like Kyle Small and have been
really really good for us. Youcan expect to see him this weekend.
Sometimes it's not the worst thing inthe world for a kid to take a
step back, watch a game andflecked and see what goes on. It's
a different vantage point from up top, you know. So he took a
(13:05):
great He's an unbelievable teammate. Heunderstood and we communicated about it. But
our vets got it done and Iwas really proud of him. Goaltending seems
to be an area where you're tryingto strike the right balance still make the
right call on a starter game bygame basis, with the exception of the
Denver series. TJ semptem Filter hasdone his job once again this year,
(13:26):
and Gibson Homer has stepped up ina big way and his starts. Do
you look at this situation as ablessing and a curse having two guys who
are good enough to start, butalso wondering if you're making the right choice
each game. No, it's nota curse in anyway. It's it's it's
I mean, you have to havetwo good goals, yep, you know,
and it's it's uh, we believein both of them. You know.
(13:50):
TJ did an unbelievable job bouncing back, I thought, and was really
good. Friday made some huge savesand pivot moments where they could have taken
a lead in And I didn't wantto him to lose momentum because he did
struggle against Denver. I wanted himyou could see him competing and being more
like himself in that game against Anchorageon Friday, and then we had the
(14:11):
day off, so he had aday to you know, get fresh,
and I didn't want to lose momentumwith his mindset, so I wanted to
go with him again. You guyshave won games in many different ways.
You've won him six' five,he won the game on Sunday three nothing,
where it's just dominating and more ofa defensive style game with the ford
check. But you've also won gameswith not your best effort. What does
(14:33):
it say maybe about where the programis to be able to win even though
you're just playing. Okay, becauselast year, at that time, especially
at the end, it felt likeit took almost a perfect effort to simply
win a hockey game. Yeah, well, I mean, when you're as
limited and short as we were lastyear, You're right, it took it
took almost a perfect effort. Butthis team right now is one of the
(14:54):
deepest in college hockey. We havekids like, you know, Matthew Romer,
you know, and Anthony Achieley,David Haimovich, kids that they haven't
gotten in yet, you know,And and they're really good hockey players.
And and a lot of the reasonis our guys are performing, they're winning,
and obviously we're healthy, so we'revery deep. You know. Kids
(15:16):
like like Cole Gordon are are comingalong, kids like Kyle Smallen are coming
along. Cole Helm's been in acouple of times, and he's a He's
a really good player for the rolethat he plays. So we have really
good players that our fans haven't beenable to see yet. And and the
tie is always going to go tothe vet, you know, the Vet's
always going to get to tie.And then if our veterans are winning games
(15:37):
for us, they're going to continueto play. And that's just how it's
going to be. Yeah, ridethe hothand all right, last, Well,
before we let you go take adrink or something, I want to
talk a little bit about the guestswe have coming up in the second period,
the best buds and star defensive duo, ty Murchison and Ethan Schmaggy.
From our vantage point, it's hardto find guys on this Arizona State roster
that are more consistent and reliable thanthose those two. And I think that
(16:00):
says a lot considering the depth ofyour roster that we just talked about.
What are your thoughts on Tie andEthan both as individuals and as a defensive
pair. Well, they're they're wondertwins. The wonder twins, Tye and
Ethan. I don't think I've seenthem apart in the last two years one
time, but uh no, they'rethey're at first, they're they're obviously incredible
kids, and and they're great inour room, and they're great leaders,
(16:22):
and they and they're they've made ourprogram better since they've been here, and
and they have a lot in frontof them that I know they're going to
and want two still accomplished just asjuniors, but they've become that pair that
we count on to close out games, you know, in pivotal moments,
especially when we have the lead latein games. They're gonna go. They're
gonna play and play a lot becausewe believe that they can shut other teams
(16:45):
down. They're that pair that wewent out there against other teams top lines,
and uh and and you need tohave those guys to win, you
know. And and we're winning gameslargely in part because they've embraced that and
they're really good at that. Onethird of the way through, the Devils
are sitting pretty with the best recordin the country. They'll remain humble with
plenty of games still left to play, but it sure does feel good to
(17:06):
be a Sun Devil fan these days. Coach appreciate you more to come on
the Devil's next series against Providence inthe third period. Up next, that
defensive pairing of Tim Murchison and EthanSchmaggy join Alex and Me to chat about

Greg Powers, Let's start the BusyHard Seltzer second period on Fox Sports nine
ten and the iHeartRadio WAPP. Thanksfor sticking with us for the second period
of Hell Frozen Over, our weeklyhour long show talking all things Sun Devil
(20:45):
Hockey. We're live every other Tuesdaythis season from Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers.
We're now in the Arcadia location nearforty fourth Street and Indian School. Hey,
if you're not here tonight, Ihope you'll consider joining us on Tuesday,
December fifth at six pm. Comeout, grab some delicious food and
talk some college hockey with us.If you look at the Sun Devil Hockey
lineup charts from game to game, you'll notice changes scratches here, line pairing
(21:08):
shifts there, perhaps a goaltending switchas well, but you'll be hard pressed
to find any separation between Ty Murchisonand Ethan Schmaggy on defense. Those two
have found a rhythm working in tandemand it's paying off big time for Arizona
State this season. Ty and Ethanjoined Alex Coiling me now on Hell Frozen
Over. Guys, great to haveyou on finally after two seasons. We
(21:29):
were begging to have you on lastweek. Just couldn't make it work,
but appreciate your time, Thanks forbeing here, thanks for having us of
course. All right, so firstthings first, give us a vibe check
in the sun Devil locker room.Right now, you guys are nine to
two and one, tied for thebest record in the nation. Things must
be feeling pretty good right now.Yeah, I think it's been good in
the locker room. You know, obviously we've been off to a good start,
(21:49):
but I think weekend and week out, it's just been a determined vibe
in the locker room. I thinkno one's happy with where we are.
I think we just want to continueto strive to be better. Ethan.
Yeah, I mean, same thing. It starts with in the gym.
You know, first thing there, you get there, you work out.
You know, energy is high inthere, so that carries over to practice
(22:10):
and then through the week and theninto the games. So I know we're
excited for this weekend. You know, energies as high as it's been,
and you know we're looking forward toconfident and humble. I love it,
all right, I said it amoment ago, but it's it's essentially become
a given that you guys will bepaired together on defense every game. I
would assume it helps that you guysare great friends, presumably have learned how
to communicate with one another on theice. What makes you two such a
(22:33):
solid defensive duo. I think that. I mean, well, for the
last two years, you know,we've been we've been living together, been
building that chemistry there, and Ithink we just both have that same mindset
where it's we're gonna play tough andphysical and make it hard on everybody on
the ice. So and I thinkwe've this year especially, we've really tried
to find a rhythm of you know, being that stable, deep air that
(22:56):
the team can rely on. Youknow, when forwards come out, like
they know they have two guys backthere that'll that'll shut it down for them.
So I think that's that's what's reallybuilt with us. Yeah, I
mean, you got two guys thatyou know, we stick strong to our
team's identity, and you know that'sthrough and through. So from the start
of the you know, first periodto the end of the game, like,
that's that's what we look for.And you know, we have each
(23:18):
other's backs, We have every otherguy on our teams backs, and you
know, I think that's strong andit's it's paid off well. So it
shows, I'll tell you that much. It shows time to mention that you
guys are roommates of course last twoyears. You guys have played together for
a long time now, but offthe ice, and I guess even on
how and why are you guys soclose? I think we push each other
and pretty much everything we do,you know, whatever, if we're playing
(23:41):
video games, golf in what's thevideo I mean we've been balancing around.
We played PGA for a little while, but now we're on the Fortnite.
I think og map is back.Og Map's back. So yeah, no,
I think we just push each otherand everything we do. You know,
we're both really competitive guys, anduh, I think it's it's only
(24:02):
matured both of us and and reallyshowed over this last year. Yeah.
I mean, it's it's good tohave like a guy who you know,
you can relate to, you know, as you know, we think the
same kind of the same sense ofhumor, and also that when it comes
down to game time, you know, we can put each other in check
and you know, just kind ofhave each other's backs and just kind of
(24:22):
get that vibe after you know, three years being with him and yep,
on the ice, off the ice, even like you said, like when
we're out golfing or you know, playing video games, it's the better golfer.
It's pretty even. Yeah, itis pretty even. Got the left,
you got the radio. So yeah, it's back and forth for sure.
I will say you guys are probablysort of the sharpest dressed guys just
based on the pictures walking into thearena together. I will say that game
(24:47):
is strong. I do want toget both of your takes on blocked shots,
and this is a question that I'vebeen itching to ask both of you
for like a year and a halfnow, So here goes. You both
sacrifice your bodies so much to makesure pucks never get a through traffic on
net Ethan. You received the honorwhich is my favorite thing in the world.
I don't know if you know this, but you got the honor of
Sponge of the Week a few weeksago from like a popular college hockey podcast.
(25:12):
Yeah you know that. Okay, that's the coolest award ever and I've
been using it on every broadcast since. So I just want you to know
that that's awesome. I guess I'llpose the question this way. Approximately how
many bruises do you guys have afterany given game? At least a couple
for sure. I think after DenverI still got a big one on my
inner thigh, not even from ashot guy. I tried to dump it
(25:33):
in and just ripped it right offmy leg. But no, we're definitely
beat up a little bit after eachgame. But you know that's something we
take pride in as those block shots. I think when that sponge of the
week comes out, we're always lookinghe's got it. He's gotten it twice
now, so do we need alobby for you to get it now?
Yeah? I mean I thought Ihad it one week and they ended up
not posting it. But it's okay. But yeah, no, I think
(25:56):
that's a that's a big one.We do look at that all the time.
Every love it, love it.Yeah, No, it's good.
We you know, we're not afraidto put our body on the line for
the team. And uh it's somethinglike honestly, it gets the boys like
energy on the bench too. Whenyou know you make a big, big
black shot or whatever, like itgets the boys back in check and you
know it pitches us a you know, go harder and so I don't mind
(26:18):
it. One of you mentioned earlierthe mindset of the team and the identity
of the team and playing that wayas defenseman and as some of the veteran
defensemen on the roster, do youfeel like it's your duty to set that
tone right away and be the oneto lead that example. Yeah, definitely.
I mean I think especially when we'restarting or we're going out pretty quick,
(26:40):
you know, it's it's playing physicallands and land body. You know,
just this last Sunday, he wentout there and killed too, and
you know, yeah, it justgets everybody going. You know, it
really picks up the intensity. Itsets the tone for the game. So
I think that's that's definitely something we'relooking to do. Yeah, I mean
there's a lot of respect, uhfrom the boys like towards us, and
(27:02):
I think, like as being olderguys juniors on the team, like we've
learned, we've been through it,we've experienced it, and you know,
it takes a big, big roleto you know, step in and you
know, get that first hit, first black shot, or you know,
just lead the team in the inthe right direction for for the whole game.
Yeah. How does it feel tojust absolutely destroy somebody cleanly, no
penalty? Yeah, it's always. It feels good always. Oh, it's
(27:23):
the best. It's demoralizing though whenthe box Yeah no, yeah, it's
yeah. It's a fine line. You got a ride in college hockey with
it. But I think, especiallythis last season, I think we've done
a good job with it. Yeah, a lot cleaner, definitely. Yeah.
You guys are part of a defensivecorps that saw some changes this offseason
(27:44):
the addition of some experienced college hockeyplayers like Katalami, Brandon Tabakin plus freshman
Anthony Dowd as the veterans of thisteam. How did you two go about
introducing those guys to the sun Devilway of playing the game, showing up
every day and being present. Yeah, I think honestly, all those guys
clicked right away. You know,Doubter is a younger guy, but he's
(28:04):
extremely mature, the nicest kid.Yeah, our decor has gotten really close
over the last past couple of months. You know, Tabaquin came in and
older guy. You know, younever know what to expect, but same
thing. He's just been an unrealguy in the locker room, a close
friend of ours and everybody on theteam, and you know we didn't not
(28:25):
we honestly didn't really have to domuch. They they kind of they fit
that that team culture right away.Yeah, I mean forwards all the way
down to the goalie. I meanit doesn't matter. Like luck, we
were lucky enough to you know, this crew that came in like transfers,
freshmen, everyone came in and youknow they bought into that identity right away.
Started with you know, the preseason, working out in the gym.
(28:45):
You know, on the ice,we all like the battle, we all
have each other's backs, and it'slike, I'd say, one of the
best groups we've had since like I'vebeen here, so just within the whole
team bought in and you know, from head and so just ice and off
yet by far the closest team we'vehad since being here. For us,
that's what we've heard from from reallymedia day on, which is very impressive.
(29:07):
I've been impressed most probably with howeverybody has stepped up. Like when
one pairing goes off, there's nodrop off when when the other one comes
on. What makes you, guysso good? Is it the depth?
Is it the variety of players. You get guys like yourselves, guys like
level and down Alami, who's justmassive? Is it skill? What makes
you guys so good? You know? I think it goes back to when
(29:30):
Greg was talking about we have wehad eight or nine d that are that
are deep and everyone can play, you know, so each practice, you
know, everyone's fighting for a spotand it brings a good internal competition.
But yeah, there really is nodrop off. I think everyone everyone hates
to lose at the end of theday. So that's that's what's really been
(29:52):
big with our group. Yeah, the nail on the other I got two
more quick ones before we have tohit to break first ones. For you,
Ethan, you were named it alternatecaptain this season, voted in unanimously
by your teammates. How does thatfeel to have the confidence of the entire
locker room to see that you're aleader? It's an honor, Like obviously,
like when everybody's you know, looksup looks up to you, Like
(30:14):
it's a big role to fill. But I feel confident on the ice and
off the ice to like lead thisteam in any way that they need.
So off the ice, that's whatschool or classes in on the ice,
you know, in the in thegames, just like you know, when
we're losing or tie game or we'reup, like you know, they can
look at me and you know seelike I guess that's that example of you
know, playing hard, physical, fast, you know, sticking true to
(30:37):
the identity and that follows and playa full sixty minutes exactly leads by example.
Big you know that that's and that'show leadership should be. And now
my question for you, I haveto ask. I know you still have
some eligibility left after this season.I know you want to focus on the
present, but drafted by the PhiladelphiaFlyers a couple of years ago, is
the NHL still where you want togo after ASU? That's definitely my goal.
(31:00):
You know, I'm not too focusedon that right now. I'm just
focused on the season and in ourteam success. But yeah, that's definitely
at the end of the day whereI want to end up. And also
at the end of the day, team success leads to individual success. So
I'm gonna do my best to helpthis team and go as far as we
can, and yeah, focus onthat once it's over. I like what
(31:22):
he just the team's success leads toindividual success. So it's something that jord
Decord told you guys a couple ofweeks ago when he was in town.
One of the NHL players from thisprogram overall coming into this weekend, the
start best start program history, bestrecord in the country, the opportunity that
you guys have to stack some moretop ten wins going into it. Where's
(31:44):
the mindset there and where's the groupat After a very competitive practice today,
I mean, we're all confident, you know, the This is like the
most ready we've been, and youknow, we continue every day to get
ready and prepare, and it's likeevery other weekend. You know, we
pair we were already, we're allbought in, and you know, we're
really excited to play this weekend. So yeah, I mean, guys are
(32:06):
ready to go and everyone wants toget into that lineup. You could tell
from today's practice it was intense.Yeah, it was intense. I mean,
but that's how it needs to bewhen you want to beat top ten
teams. So it was good. You guys like the Friday Sunday thing or
you're kind of excited for that tobe. I didn't mind it. It
was different. I didn't mind theone o'clock game. That was kind of
nice to leave the rank and it'sstill right out. But uh you missed
(32:28):
football, Yeah, but uh no, Yeah, I think we're excited to
go back to the Friday Saturday, the one week his giants win, He's
going to hockey. You know,it's a rare win out in my territory.
All right, guys, you canbag on number five and number sixteen

Thanksgiving two days away from today.Aside from having the distinct pleasure of sitting
next to us every other week, what are you thankful for this year?
Thankful for a lot, Tyler. We have all the time in the world,
(36:59):
family, obviously, my players andstaff, and just just you know
where our program is. I thinkthat you know, it goes by so
fast, right, and and youforget that we're only really eight years old
at this level. And what we'vebeen able to accomplish with molat Arena and
some some big wins and success andand seeing young men turn into men and
(37:22):
go on and do different things inlife, whether it's professional hockey or become
very successful in other professional avenues. It's it's been a lot of fun.
So thankful for all of it.I have to know what your favorite dish
on the Thanksgiving table is stuffing? Is it with sausage? Yeah? Big
fan, Yeah yummy. I dowant to kind of go off script here
(37:43):
and ask you about the news wesaw. What was it last week about
the retirement or resignation of Arizona StateVice President for university athletics Ray Anderson.
I know you're very close with Ray, you oh hit or you give him
a lot of credit for building thisthis hockey pro. Tell me your thoughts
on him stepping aside and kind ofwhat what you hope the new athletic director
(38:06):
ultimately brings to support hockey. Well, I mean, look, first to
talk about Ray, I know, the biggest thing is is what people have
to understand is, you know,we we don't exist without him, you
know. And and for him tobe open to adding the sport of hockey,
you know, in his first sixmonths as an athletic director is is
(38:28):
incredible, you know, And thatjust speaks volumes of the way that he
thinks. He's a forward thinker andin every way, and if we didn't
have him in that seat when whenthe timing was right, there's no way
we're here today. So you know, he had the vision, he had
the the you know, the intestinalfortitude too. Did a lot of people
(38:50):
questioned when we add in men's icehockey with no arena, with no conference,
with a club coach, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
And he believed in it. Hebelieved in it, and and we're never
going to forget that, and we'realways going to laud him for that.
And I think the ASU community needsto do the same. And as far
as a future athletic director, justmore of the same, you know,
just I mean, that's that's notup to me. That's up to that's
(39:13):
up to to doctor Crow and allthe great people at a s U,
and they'll get somebody to come inandto a great job. It's a it's
a it's a canvas that I thinkis incredibly exciting to paint on right now
with some really good coaches and somegood programs that are doing very well.
We have a new football coach andKenny Dillingham who's got tremendous passion for our
institution. In his program, hebleeds moon and gold and we're excited to
(39:37):
move in another dimension of Sun DevilAthletics in every way. And I think
the guy that or the the girlthat gets the job is is is very
lucky. All right, Let's uh, let's jump back into hockey. Touched
on a goaltending strategy you developed overthe first third of the season. Obviously
a very big series coming up againstProvidence, which we'll talk about more here
(40:00):
in this segment. What are youthinking as far as a starting goaltender this
Friday and Sunday. I mean,TJ played so well that you know he'll
be on Friday, you know, and like always, like with any position,
you take it game by game. You know, you focus on only
what's in front of us. Theonly thing we can focus on right now
is is Friday against Providence. AndI don't know what the concretely what the
(40:24):
lineup will look like yet. We'regoing to base a lot off of practice
this week, but we really likedthe way our lineup was built and how
it looked on Sunday. You probablysee a very similar line up to that
with maybe a few tweaks, butyou know, we we we like the
way we look. Goaltending is sucha it can be as much mental as
it is physical for TJ to getand the bounce back weekend that he did
(40:46):
this past weekend. How big wasthat for him? It was big?
You know, I mean he hehe and I met on Tuesday after Denver
and and he admitted, he's like, look, I just wasn't myself,
but but I need to get backto myself. And we talked about some
things and what he can do todo that, and he did. He
bounced right back on Friday, andlike I said, made some saves in
(41:07):
that game against Anchorage when we werestruggling and the game was tied to keep
it and they never took the lead. And that that gave our guys confidence
to really settle down in front ofhim and figure out how to get a
win. And that's exactly what happened. You moved Jackson Niedermeyer up to offense
on Sunday against Anchorage. For thosewho may not recall, Jackson came to
a SU as a forward. Hetransitioned him to defense last year he got
(41:29):
injured, so now he's back onoffense. I received a few questions about
this, So walk me through yourthought process. What do you want to
see from Jackson moving forward? Justjust compete and desperation and urgency. He's
such a talented player. He hasevery tool you can want. He can
skate, he's big, he canshoot, he's got good hands, he
has an IQ. So when hedecides that he really wants to work,
(41:51):
he's one of the best players onour roster. He's that good. So,
you know, he was he wasprobably our best player practice today,
which was great to see. Sohe hopefully something is clicked. He has
to continue to play with urgency anddesperation, and if he does that,
he's gonna be a really, reallygood shot in the arm for us.
Yeah, that third line, itseemed to start to get going. It's
(42:14):
been some different combinations, but CharlieShane Young Smollen it was Ra at the
center position on Sunday getting that thirdline. We we've spoken so much about
depth, but when they can playlike a second or first line for other
teams, does that make you guysthat much more dangerous? For sure?
I mean, you know Ara isyou know when when you pencil out a
(42:34):
lineup this entire season, Ra wasa mainstay in it, you know,
and and and because he was sogood as a freshman, and he just
hadn't got his legs firing after hissurgery, and he finally did this weekend,
and the difference is incredible. Youknow, he was going and the
confidence he gives our guys. He'ssuch a good teammate. He's so good
in the room. All the boyslove him. So when he scored that
(42:57):
goal, I don't think that youknow, there was an guy on our
bench that wasn't more excited for Ryanthan him. You know. Then then
then, I mean they were allso excited for him, you know,
because it was like, all right, Ari's back, Like what a huge
shot in the arm for our group. And so he's, uh, he
looked good again today and I believehe's back at She just took him a
little bit of time after his surgeryto find find his legs, and he's
(43:19):
found him. Yeah, I meanI forgot a little bit about There were
times last year where he was legitimatelythe best player on the ice front.
Oh yeah, was amazing. Youcould argue he was our best player last
year. You could argue that mostmost you know, I mean the most
instrumental guy like that just was theglue and played two hundred feet and and
did the little things on top ofthe big things. He was everywhem.
(43:40):
He was very good credit to Leantoo for bringing him back stronger than ever.
All Right, with just a fewminutes left here, let's talk about
this weekend two games against Providence College, team that the Sun Devils had played
just once before, back in twentyseventeen. For Oars are ranked ninth in
the nation. They just got sweptby UMass. They're a Hockey East program.
So for our listener is I thinkthe likes of BCBU New Hampshire.
(44:02):
That's who they contend with every year. What should we know about the Friars.
They're very good. They're very good. They're hard to play against.
They play heavy, they're they're they'rewell structured, and they're you know,
they're they're We are going to haveto be at our very best to beat
them and just play a nice, simple, hard game and kind of beat
(44:23):
them at their own game. Youknow, our identity is hard and fast.
There's probably just hard and heavy.You know, they're they're a little
bit bigger than us up front, but uh, I know our guys,
you know, can get it doneagainst anybody then and you can tell already
that they're ready to go. Theyhave the best scoring defense in the country.
They allow fewer than two goals pergame on average. I know you're
(44:44):
big on focusing on yourselves, buthave you watched any film or do you
know anything about them to see areasthat you can exploit offenses. We watched
both their games against U Mass thispast weekend, and they were the better
team both nights, you know,And that's certainly not an knock on UMass.
They're very good too, and andyou I found a way to win
both nights. They got some reallygood goaltending U Mass. And Providence,
(45:04):
you know, was up in thefirst game in the last you know,
until like the last few minutes, and U Mass took a lead with under
a minute to go and then playedan even better, cleaner game at U
Mass and you Mass scored to tieit in the last minute and then one
and overtime. So there's a lotof things about Providence that we are preparing
for every day this week and thatwe like about their game, and we'll
(45:25):
be ready, all right. CoachGreg Powers with his thoughts on this Tuesday
night, as we get set forgames thirteen and fourteen of the season.
His Sun Devil's back at home thisFriday and Sunday against Providence for the final
series of their November home stand.Puck drop at seven o'clock on Friday,
two pm on Sunday, Coach, appreciate you as always, We'll talk to
you on Friday. So thanks guys, Thanks Coach, and happy Thanksgiving to
(45:45):
you too. Three periods down onHell Frozen Over, much more to come
in overtime when we return, AlexCoyle and I discussed some of our observations
from the last two series and whatthe Devils need to do to take care
of business against another ranked opponent inProvidence. This we again stick with us.

Coach Greg Powers on Fox Sports nineto ten and the iHeartRadio woup Bag at
gold Bears and Cheeseburgers in Arcadia. For overtime on Hell Frozen Over, Tyler
Palley joined by my broadcast partner onthe Mountain America Credit Union Sun Devil Radio
Network, Alex Coyle, as weget you set for Arizona State's upcoming series.
Alex, Let's start with what Iasked Coach Powers about in the first
(49:29):
period. Sun Devil Hockey has reallybecome the sport at Arizona State that fans
are rallying around. Fans are engaged, they love the rink, they love
the sport. I thought Coach Power'sanswer was insightful. Gave a lot of
credit to JJ van Neil and thevolleyball program because oftentimes we live in our
own kind of bubble of the sportwe're focused on. But then you take
a step back and you realize whatit's doing for an entire fan base.
(49:53):
Yeah, school spirit, right.Yeah. Everybody looks to football, basketball,
but you have a hockey program rightnow, in a volleyball program that
are at the top of their game, really and to rally behind. I
can remember going to different games anddifferent things as a student, and when
the teams were better. It's justmore fun to simply be a student at
(50:14):
Arizona State. So to be ableto have something like that performing at a
high level something that's so fun.To go to a game and see the
team win and there's nothing better.Yeah, it just seems like the horizon
is bright and not that far offfor Sun Devil Athletics as a whole,
and with everything that has happened inthe last year, year and a half,
it's good to have something to justfeel proud about, yeah, and
(50:37):
a team that you can feel confidentwhen you walk in. They're not gonna
win every game, but it feelslike they are in every game. Yeah,
right, exactly. All right, let's chat about the Denver series for
a moment. You and I talkedoffline about what a successful weekend looked like,
and it was a split Sure enough, that's exactly what the Devil's earned
the second game tough to swallow becausethey had that three to zero lead,
(50:57):
but the overall result I think wasenough to prove that this team is for
real. It's a lot of yesand no with that right in terms of
how happy you were, but alsolike again, the frustration that the opportunity
that you could have had. ButI think, remembering back to what we
were talking about in the first intermissionof Game two against Denver, was the
level of hockey that ASU is playingin the tempo, the frozen four level
(51:21):
hockey. Right to see the teamplay like that against a Frozen four National
championship caliber team and really take itto them. This team can do that.
Coach Powers knows it, players knowit if they play to their Sun
Devil identity, and we've seen thatand this weekend was a good example of
what can happen when you do thatconsistently. Yeah, speaking of this weekend
Anchorage, that game one was close, but it never felt like panic mode
(51:44):
for the Devils. They never trailed, They battled hard. Sure, the
puck battles favored the Sea Wolves inthat game, but ASU found a way,
as it has all year, andin Game two, all sun Devils
from the start, one goal ineach period, a veteran lineup, another
shutout from teaching. It's funny becauseyou and I walked away at least for
the for the five minute before wehad coach on it, like, yeah,
SAPs Friday. It looked really good. It was really entertaining. He
(52:06):
scored a bunch of goals, right, and the satisfaction again though, of
winning multiple ways and seeing the teamyou could win by scoring a ton of
goals, where you can also justsimply beat a team by keeping it in
your own end and dominating that way, being a physical game and just not
letting a team play hockey. Right, it looked like just completely two different
(52:27):
age levels. It's good to seethis team be able to win multiple ways
even when they don't have their one. That first period on Sunday, I
think they what was it like threeor four shots that anchorage got off.
Yeah it wasn't three, and thenfive the next period. Yeah, just
wild. All right, goaltenders, you heard coach Powers share his plans,
or perhaps the lack thereof of plansfor the netminder this weekend. Whomever is
(52:51):
in net needs to be at thetop of his game. Whether it's Gibbie
or TJ. Because Providence can score, and like we discussed, it's hard
to go back and forth with thembecause they just do not allow many goals,
right, But going and knowing TJthat what we've learned to know him
over the past couple of years, that Denver Seri is gonna fuel him to
just be simply stand on his head. I think Sunday was a great example
(53:15):
of that, especially the way thedefense helped him and saved him for that
third period, the five seconds minutesegment that Coach Powers was talking about,
and you could kind of see thathis slagger was back a little bit.
There was some you know, hemade a dramatic saving stare at the puck
or someone bumps into him and hecan do a little you know. He
started. You could see that hewas having fun last weekend. It was
(53:37):
good to see expect him to beready to roll. I asked Coach Powers
about this earlier and I just sharedmy thoughts, but curious on yours.
What did you think of that splitweekend with games on a Friday and a
Sunday, especially since you had towake up early for Sunday's one pm puck
I had to make sure the coffeewas ready before I went to sleep,
and then the alarm clock. No, but no, it was good.
(53:59):
The UH one o'clock game was wasinteresting. I kind of liked that having
being out early, but I likethat the idea that you can go out
and adjust that night after that.A lot of the postseason tournaments are structured
that way, where you can havesome time off to to make those adjustments.
Look at the tape and we sawbetter Sun Devil team on Sunday in
the second game of that, whichwas which was good to see. What
(54:22):
did you think of it and turnit over to you aside from missing some
NFL football, which like we discussed, and your giants finally want to get
its fine, maybe that's the commondenominate they're going for Drake May or something
like that. But nevertheless, yeah, I liked it. I don't personally
look when personally as the broadcaster farremoved from being on the ice, so
(54:43):
my opinion really doesn't matter. Idon't like this split simply because when you're
in the zone, you're in thezone, right You lock in from Friday
through Sunday or through Saturday night, and you're just in the zone and then
you can snap out of it andgo on with your life. That's just
my personal opinion, but it alsoI guess I could argue that, you
know, sometimes getting out of yourrhythm tests even a little bit more to
(55:05):
see what you have well right whenyou're not locked in. So was I
on my game? I thought youwere. I was appreciate that our listeners
can write. I don't know ifI ever am all right. Of course
we only got about ninety seconds here, but of course, by law,
we have to talk about the SunDevil power play once again this week fourth
best unit in college hockey. Productiveagain last weekend against Anchorage, also productive
against Denver. Feels like they're goingto score every time they're out there.
(55:29):
I mean the one I think itwas the second goal against a Laska Anchorage
when they went out there, I'mlike, you could feel they're going to
score here, and they scored withina minute. I had a really good
talk with the Tim Lovell that you'llhear on the pregame show here coming up
this weekend about that what he looksfor when he's setting up the power play,
and there's just so many lethal guysone through five on both units and
even guys that aren't on the unitthat can just make you pay. All
(55:52):
right, real quick, what dothe Sun Devils need to do to get
it done this weekend against Providence?I think he's going to be a good
week of practice, right. Intensityis going to have to be up.
You got to be ready to bephysical and play. I think the way
Providence wants to play is the wayis you wants to play. So kind
of a Stiles meet Spikes thing.Whoever plays their brand is gonna win favorite
Thanksgiving food, all of it,all of it. That's the right answer.
(56:13):
I wait for the dessert, exceptfor the I'm not a gravy guy.
Yeah, I don't understand that, but we'll let that one go.
All right. That wraps things upfor us. Our thanks tonight to Sun
Devil Hockey head coach Greg Powers, defenseman Ty Murchison, and Ethan Smaggy for
joining us. Special thanks to ourproducer engineer Sean Crespin and his fantastic team
behind the scenes, Page Shacklett andher Sun Devil Athletic staff, and of
(56:34):
course Chris Schubert back in the studio. We will see you on Friday night,
six thirty Asu and Providence over atMullet Arena and temb and then a
two pm puck drop on Sunday. Thanks for tuning in. Everybody, Happy
Thanksgiving at good Night
