out of Montgomery. Last week wetalked about them a little bit. Yes,
for you to play them. Let'stalk about that game, coach,
and we'll move on. Well,you know, we preached all week about
how they were and we got tocome out focused and you know, not
let up on them. And itwas strange. Midway through the first quarter
or midway through the second quarter,we were up forty four to nothing,

and we had no idea what wasgoing on other than we keep scorning.
They're not And you know, Ididn't even feel comfortable then. But you
know, we went into halftime upfifty two to twelve, and I'm still
preaching don't let up, don't letup, don't let up. And of
course they agreed to the running clocksecond half and that that pleased me anyway,

and we won fifty eight to twenty. But you know, once once
we got in that fourth qurt Ijust went in and pulled the start in
defense and you know, let himscore on the second team. Who who
played well for you in the game, coach, Yes? Or should I
say didn't? It was more likethat. Yeah. Well, Kevin Mason

again had four touchdown passes and arushing touchdown, and Josiah Anderson what he
know with one and two touchdowns,and he had a pick six as well
from defensive end. Yep I fortythese rumble it was about forty forty five

yards. Yeah, okay, yeah, he uh he. Actually he talked
about with a linebacker, you know, I give him some freedom. I
didn't know they were doing this though, but that's fine. Whatever works.
They actually played his own blitz.The linebacker went and he stepped back,
stepped right into a slant. SoI'll take it any day. So he
was they were freelancing. Is thatwhat you're saying, coach? Yeah,

I mean I give him some rules, and you know, it's like I
don't care who does what as longas all the areas are covered. And
you know that's just the way Icoached. All right, hey, all
right, next week, first roundof the playoffs. It's team you played
this year, it is, andyou beat by forty Yes, we beat
him eighty four, twenty four toforty four for you. And of course

you know we we've talked already aboutyou know, the game time and which
day you want to do it,Thursday, Friday, all that good stuff,
you know, and he wanted todo it Friday night, just regular
and I said, okay, Well, how do you want to handle the
situation? I said, now,everything's assuming, but assuming we get up

early again, you want to justpile on the points to start to run
a clock and get it over with, or you want to score and have
fun. He said, well,I like that. Let's score and have
fun. So tell me what we'regonna do, score and have fun.
We're gonna we're gonna score as quickas we can, and I'll put in

our JV defense and our you know, second stress. That's what I wanted
to use. Yeah, yeah,and and then we'll is that what you
did the last time? Is thatthe team that we we said we're going
to you wanted to work on somethings and you probably okay, right,
yeah, we we were up.I don't know what that was, but
somebody wanted to we last time,what we did. We talked about it

beforehand, and I took my JVdefense and they they only scored against our
second and JV defenses. They couldn'teven get a first down against our starters.
So the starters only played four seriesthe entire game. Yeah, we
we had talked. We I rememberus talking about this. Hey, look,
I'm gonna score a lot points.There's some things I don't want to

work out, but I'm gonna takemy JV defense. I just want to

remember this's being Russell. It's anon region game, non reging game.
That's right. How do you approachthis from coach? You know, we
we haven't played very good in thelast two weeks in the first half,
so we want to get better usuh, in the first half. We
want to play a little bit faster. You know, I talked to the
kids. We're playing a bigger school. You know, they're really good.
They got some playmakers. You know, we want to be in position,

you know, to play better firsthalf, get better than that aspect,
and then you know, see whathappens the second half. Uh. You
know, we want to take somemomentum from this game going into the playoffs.
You know, we're playing a good, good Ben Russell team, so
you know, we we've got toget out there and compete. That's what
we want to do. We wantto compete and be there, you know
in the fourth quarter and have achance to you know, possibly win this
thing. But we want to keepit close and play good. You know

what coach this is. You're right, this is a region championship team you're
playing. That's right. It isa in a bigger classification. Ye said
you had a let me tell you, coach, you put together pretty nifty
non region schedule. Yeah, yourprogram. You know, whoever, whoever
put that schedule together. I tellyou, it is hard to find five

non region games. You know.We're yeah, we're yeah, so you
know, finding five that was youknow, not you don't have to travel
far that you look at. You'regonna bring, you know, some money
in as well. You know thatthat all you know went in into you
know, a factor for this.But you know, we we like to
challenge. We want to go outand play good. You know you're playing,
you know, a team above us, and also you know we want

to get out there and play good. But let me say this, the
coach, you play the net,that's a given. But even though they're
below you, that's then you playhand lee and then you play board.
Well that's a region game. Butwell that's pretty tight. That's pretty strong.
Yeah, that's pretty strong for youto do that. Yeah, you've
got to go up in class youcan't play those Yeah, you know,

you you just gotta you gotta playgood teams to get better. You know
you can, you can stack yourschedule in your favor. But you know,
we want to play good, goodopponents and we want to get better.
And you know the kids have donethat. You know we've we've gotten
better. Uh, we just feellike we've kind of gotten flat the first
half of the last two games.To be a good way to finish it.
With the coach, it would bethat's important, that's in shape to
and go in the playoffs. Yes, it is all right. Next week,

do you know your opponent? Wedon't. You know, they got
all the stuff going down, thenI'm gonna predict that will be out coaching.
Yeah, well, we'll see whathappens. You know, they still
got a three way tie down therewith if they if if they were to
pull them out, what would itlook like? Excuse me, if they
got to remove themselves because they didsomething wrong? What would it? I

think? Faith bumps up to one. You know you're gonna have b c
Rain, You're gonna have Ums,right, you're gonna have Viger. All
those three are tied for that secondthird and fourth spot. So they're gonna
figure it out Friday night. Youknow, they still got I think they
still got one reaching game or oror something going on that they Yeah,
one team's got a reaching game,I believe something. Or two teams I

should say, have reading games left. So and I think you know,
I think umss right plays Williamson orsomebody, and it could you know,
if they get that win, that'sa higher classification or something. And may
they may be in the same reason. I can't remember. So it's you
tie breakers. It's I think whenthe rule when whenever way, when the

ruling comes out, I think that'llmake it a little clear too, coach.
But right now, you're right.You've got you got four and five
and O four and one, youguys three and two l more and then
you got two and three board guardand you got one and four and oh
and five, So that would dropif they were to fourth in all,
well, you know what, I'mlooking at your side, that's right.

I'm not looking at their side,but it's the same thing. But anyway,
you got you got to worry aboutFriday night, that's right. Well,
And and what you're gonna get isyou're gonna you're gonna have four very
good teams coming out of Mobile's gotfour good team that's gonna have a lot
of athletes on their team. Yeah. You know what, they've won six
in a row, bench and Russellhas coaching. Yeah, that one.
They've done good. Yeah, youwon what's seven all your last eight,

So you're doing good, tea.Right have they been Have they been a
playoff team in the past? Theyhave it him. Yeah, They've got
a kid that can sling it backthere, quarterback. He can spin it
pretty good. It's amazing what thatdoes. You feeling good about your team?
Coach? I do? Uh,you know, we just got to
get to get through this one andbe healthy and go into the playoffs next

week healthy. It's always good tosee you, coach. We carry the
Batley Rounds on one hundred point ninethe Bull Friday night, their last game
of the regular season, and thenthey'll host a playoff game the following week.

off, but we're getting healthy andwe're first week. Just worked on the

tournament today. This week we workedon Southern prep a little bit, so
we may be leaning toward that direction. Really, what I'm gonna tell you
the reason I say that, Jeffis mate man guru Jason. All right,
they won eighty four to forty fourthe last time they played metalbu Southern
Prep, and they they played withtheir JB defense, and oh yeah,

the coach host that we're gonna dothat. That's why I'm saying it appears
as though they were probably something crazyhappened. Y'all are headed towards that.
I didn't yeah to go to seewho goes of the Championships? Are you
serious? So do you know whatthat whipper Snappers said? I call it
whipsnapper. You know what he saidthe other day he said, he said,

I'll tell you what we're gonna do. We're gonna have three teams come
to our come to our Coach show, playing in the champions playing in the
in the super Fars. We madea nick name, that's your grandson,
Super four, and we had youand Spring Southern Prep. Chambers, Scott
Glenwood. You're correct, how aboutthat? Well Glenwood don't come to Coach

show, but we we well,let's not kill them. Well you're right,
Well we were four. But allright, I asked, look here,
right here, Coach Bert three thatit's going to be at our show
you uh well, Chambers or yeahthat's it or Southern Prep. See,
they're just god, I have toget Hi credited on that, and I

think Chambers and and we might havesomebody just say on the other side too.

path, coach, and what happenedwhen we need you go? Jeff's your
interview. I'm sorry, I meanquiet, Yeah, I know you sure,
yea. He had two weeks ina row off, but he hadn't
had got injured. He got onit. It is practicing. So now
you had a homecoming game. Wedidn't. We did. That was our

last game of the year. Wefinished up eight and two and finished it
along and you know, like Coachwas saying at Balley, we played a
couple of off off, non reagiongames that were tougher. You know,
some of the best UH eight manfootball is around. We played a Lighthouse
and them in evangel from Alabaster.They're playing in their championship and you know,

they rolled forty five players out thereand they're a good solid team.
They beat us by six, andwe went over and played Windsor in Georgia
and they've got a very good eightman football program. They won championship two
years ago and would runner up lastyear, and we beat them by two
points. So paying that tougher competitionwhen you get a chance, I feel
like helped us. We learned alot from it. And uh, this

(16:00):
last two weeks, we've just beenworking on some things that you normally don't
get a chance to. We've beengiving the kids breaks. You know,
we'll practice every other day or somethinglike that, and then we'll we'll hit
it hard next week and start gettingready for probably, like we said,
Southern Prep. Yeah, you know, you know I said, I'm stepping
out on a limb, but I'mjust saying I feel like that's who would
have been. Well, we playedthem earlier in the year, and and

(16:22):
you know, coach has a toughjob there. I tell him all the
time that, you know, CoachBell's got a tough job there because he
didn't get his kids all summer.So we play them early. They're a
better football team than when we playedthem, you know, early in the
year. You know, he improvesevery week and does a good job with
them. So so we're looking forwardto that and getting back playing again.
It's tough practicing, you know,when you know have a game. So

(16:44):
we've kind of treated it like apre season and we did good starting a
year off. You know, we'realways prepared, so that's kind of our
mindset. We treated it like itwas pre season and we're getting ready for
you know, the second season.You know, we got two more games
to try to finish out. We'retalking spring with football. Go back and
rescout yourself, see what you manway too much? Yeah, so that's
way too Yeah. No, Idon't think you can do it too much.

(17:07):
You want to see if you've gottendencies or something. I went in
and Coach Barfield was doing that oneday years ago. Coach, when he
was at open like. I said, what are you doing coaching? He
said, I'm watching my offense AndI said, to your offense. He
goes, I'm watching No, hesaid, I'm scouting myself scouting. I
said, what do you mean.Say well, i'm my offense coordinator,
you know, I said yeah,And he said I'm watching my tendencies.
I went what Yeah, I said, sir, And he said, well,
I'm seeing if I have any tendenciesthat I do on first one coordinator.

(17:30):
Yeah, they're doing the same thingcotectable and I've never heard of it
till then. So we've watched alot of film, you know, the
coaching staff has this week. Evenour kids are excited about it. You
know, chance to play for achampionship. On the teams that were going
to play Southern Prep, you know, chance to be maybe North River on
that side. And uh, theother team is Cornerstone Christian. I mean

they've got a outstanding quarterback receiver duothat's hard to kind of wrangle up,
so making plans, you know,and that helps us as well. Son
and Columbiana. Uh, Cornerstone fromColumbiana. They're very similar. So we're
there's more than one Cornerstone. Yeah, the Cornerstone range. Oh, there's
two or three of them. Let'sbe a popular Christian school school. Yeah,

you had to have that Cornerstone.Yeah, yeah, there you go.

when finished number one in your region, one in the region. You know
what's good about that? It wasafter the Baplesfield win. Yeah, yeah,
I think that was out the making. And you're off this week.

Off this week right here, geta chance to get better and get a
colored keeper. He'll don't have toreally have no kids, it's like broken
up or heard anything. Just geta chance to let them rest their bity
and rest their minds just a littlebit and get focused on, you know,
getting ready for the playoffs. When'dyou figure out that? When did
y'all know that you were playing SouthernChalk Tall in the first round? Actually
knew about a week ago, Isay, didn't we think? I think
that was one of the ones thatwere kind of fish kind of like,

(20:33):
yeah, I kind of finished earlier. You I knew you you once was
the two and three and four,So you gotta doew that so you know,
had a chance of knowing who wasgoing to play. But really,
you know, had a chance toreally look at them and nothing yet really
coach yea working on na we startingthem. I let the kids kind of
like just get better this week andkind of do a couple of things right
here, just to work on somemistakes that we made during the season against
other teams. Correct those mistakes rightthere and just get ready to probably start

next weekeet ready? Do they haveanother game left for they do it?
One more game. I think theygot one more game this week. They
got one Friday. It's a regionor not, it's none the reason you're
gonna give it to watch them oryeah, I'm trying to watch them on
the NFLS system. Yeah, Iwas gonna say you all the NF system
is. You know, it's great. It is great, It is very
good. It's uh do what coachtell us about balance? Because I went

and discussed Billislee. Look, Benisleyis a good team. You know that
that's They're a good team, hassome got a good quarterback, a good
quarterback that can put it all overthe field. The thing is, you
know, they gave us a scaryearly in the game, but we make
some good defensive plays and had aninterception by Jeremiah Floyd. The kid that
we had, a young kid inthe tenth grade, stepped up, made

a play and score touchdown and giveus to go ahead win. Very good,
We'll go ahead. We know wegot southern chalk talk. You know,
do you know have you seen anythingon them? And coach at all
or have you even peaking back?That's all and four seeds. But man,
when you get to that playoffs,them seeds and all that don't make

(22:00):
no difference. You know, everyteam, you gotta just show up and
play because you know everybody want towin. Nwe win and go home your
opportunity to get it right, coach, I've seen four seeds in the championship.
Yeah exactly, you know, andyou really don't know. And we
don't want something shop tall to bea championship contend now. We don't want
to come back next week and seeingthat, you know we do we and
it we I mean I went withfour losses. No, I few want

(22:21):
it with four losses. I cangive you a bunch of them. Four
seats, two seats and the undefeatedteams losing the first round. I remember
Oxford ten of first round loss.Somebody hunts for one of your hunts for
hostels as you call them ten andoh the years Oxford coach went one year
and big bore guard and got reallyphysical, got hurt, a bunch of
players hurt and lost. The firstthing is about it, you know,

(22:44):
like like I told the kids,come Monday. You know, everybody zero
runs it right. Everybody zero runsit right. The records records. Yeah,
what you did to get there doesn'tget you any further. You know
what, coach, you played insome big games you will coach just right,
that kind of gets you for theplayoffs, what you think? Yeah,
it does, but then you knowyou gotta don't fall for what you
did. You know what? Allright, let me see if I can

(23:07):
some this up. Coach, you'vebeen here before, and you don't want
the same thing that happen. Youwant to finish the package though, exact.
That's right. I get it.I get like, you know,
with all kids and stuff, youknow, you get thinking about that nine.
You know that season right there isover. You know this is another
part of the season. You're rightlike you've been I get it. Yeah,
so I get it. You knowI've seen what was twelve six final
in my fuel game. Uh huh, it should have been eighteen. I

watched one last week to undefeated teamsplaying in real town in Highland home.
Huh twenty one fourteen Uh huh yeah, just you know it would have been
worse. You play them the nextweek. It could get flipped. Yes,
yeah, so you have to beready, all your guys healthy.
Coach, you got a small groundyou. That's such a blessing to have
that mania is I mean to havethat few and still yeah, I mean
yeah, coach, because all ofthem that way, it's a week to

(23:52):
week performance. You know, youdo. You lose a player, coach,
you lose a lot. If Ilose one player, I lost three
players. Yeah. Well, becausethat's the offensive guy defense. Got a
special team. When you say specialteams, though, get off, keep
receiving, receive, you know,we got to put them all down there.
Then some people say, well justput a young guy. Okay,
But like I tell all kids,any time on special teams, somebody scoring

you, you can squirm somebody.Let me tell you it's very important that
said man that lakut Nick Saban putson his special team, just skin out
there sometimes exactly. Definitely tell youit's the five stars and then that's the
best athletes. Yeah, and Iknow you're living you know, yeah,
with your yeah, they won't beanother pick kicks. Now have a kick

the clinch of a playoff spot againstWeaver coach. Let's talk about that one

brief because listen, I got onething we talk about first. Why are
you sitting beside the heat and I'mover here about the freeze? Now it's
cold, man, do you misterbuddy? Okay, it was pointed right
there. Oh okay, but deMark Okay, it was like that,
and Coach Newton wanted the phillip,so I turned it in. De Mark
got blankets over the well, hewears shorts. He's got we got to
talk to him about that Sunday hegot. He's got a nice jacket on

(25:49):
too. The coach, Uh Newtonbrought him. But yeah, football,
I forgot you. Aside from theheat, Uh, it was a great
win for the program, great winfor our community. You know. Uh
went up there and we knew itwas gonna be a tough ball game when
Space one got up there and theythey they thought they still had a chance

(26:10):
to to play for a playoff birth. You know, coach did a good
job of getting their kids motivated andthey came out and it was really kind
of a weird situation. We wouldscore, they would score, we kicked
phil goal, they kicked a fieldgoal, we get a stop, and
then they'd get a stop and itjust kind of went back and forth like

(26:30):
that for most of the game.But at halftime we went in and made
some adjustments defensive. Coach course anddid a great job with their quarterback was
was causing some major issues for USdefense standpoint, and he did a great
job of making the adjustments he neededto make on that end to stop him.
And and you know they did andbecause it you know, twenty four

(26:53):
twenty four a half times, Yeah, and they only scored one touchdown after
that, and it was you know, it was rough for ast defensively the
first half of the second half defensively, Man, I'm telling you those kids,
our kids came to play and inthe defensive coaching staff with coach course
and calling the plays and making theadjustments everything. Just they they did a
great job. All right, coach, Hey, this week you got a

horse you being non region game.Uh you kind of get you already know

finishing our regular season the right way, getting the five and five, having
more momentum, going to Mobile becausewe know that's gonna be a challenge too.

playoffs. But y'all, I mean, y'all can't. Y'all can't start coaching
against them yet. Now, Ican't start coaching against them till next week.

bit last week at a game nowthat I say they run the wishbone and

brag real quick on on coach MattJohnson. You know, we talked about
it a little bit today. Peopledon't realize, well, you has been
playing football for fifty years. Fiftyyears. We've had eleven seasons where we
win five hundred or or better,in eleven seasons where we made the playoffs.

So this is truly a historical situationfor us. But it's because and
coach Johnson's had he's really had arough tenure. You know, he started
off with COVID and I'm telling you, people don't realize all the stuff that
he's had to go through to getus this point. And he's done as
he's kept the faith, he's keptdoing things the right way, and uh,

he allows the coaches to coach.But he does. I mean,
he does everything the right way.He's he's really a great leader for the
kids, a great leader for ourprogram, and he deserves all the credit
that he's going that he should begetting from this and hopefully this is just

the first of many back to backchances for us to go to playoffs,
because but he does, he reallydoes a great job. And he doesn't
get the credit because if we don'thave you know, you're five and five,
four and six. Oh, hedoesn't get a credit a lot of
times. But he does as gooda job as anybody around this area of

in his situation. And I'm reallyproud to be on his staff, and
I know Coach Corston feels the sameway. But we're really proud of him
and the job that he's done andhe's going to continue to do in the
future. And he's a fine Christianman. Yeah, well that's he brings
it every day without doubt, leaves. He brings it every day, pushes

us to bring it every day.And like I said, he lives us
the right way. You can tell, you know, you can tell where
his faith is at and and that'sevident how he leads us and how he

I thought it was kind of markeyin this area because we were keeping up

with it. Yeah, you know, places around and I had a lot
of people tell me it's one ofthe best high school games I've been to
in a long time. But youknow, we had a great crowd.
Our kids were ready to play.We felt like we had a chance,
We felt like we could win thefootball game. And coach I did to
our kids have gotten better all year, and uh, you know we played

well and uh and uh just reallycame out with a huge, huge win
to capt off our season. ButI told the kids, you know,
that's a big win, but nobodywill remember that win. If you don't
want to state championship, you're right. But I didn't want to leave it.
I didn't want to and I know, Jiff, I just know it
was ninety one finish. You know, you lost the opener against a very
good three eighteen yep, that'll beshould be playing That's right. I forgot

to say that the Finnish state champshould be playing them. Yep. And
then you played. You closed yourseason with a win against the team that
yep. So I commend you.I tell you what I thought. We
had so many heroes guys that steppedup that night. I was so happy
as a coach. But Luke Tarborohad two hundred and fifteen yards rushing at
the half and finished with two fiftyeight. He had two at the half,

two fifteen at the half, hewas just he was just wearing it
out. We gave to him twentyfour times, but he could. He
got banged up a little in thefourth quarter and he sat most of the
fourth quarter, so it still hadtwo fifty eight and two scores. Jacob
Norgard came in on the fourteen forus and ran the ball well in the
fourth quarter. And then uh,Kyle Han, one of our seniors,

just you know, sometimes things happeningin life that are kind of bigger than
sports. And Kyle's grandmother had catsher and she died at five o'clock Friday
morning, and he ended up makingthe game saving tackle at the two yard
line to win the football game.He said, Dad, I felt coach,
I felt like my grandmother was therewith me. You know, just

kind of one of those things he'llnever forget. But it was just it
was a great night for our team. I think it gave wait wait wait,
they were fixing the score and hestopped him on the two. Yes,
I just took it in for asecond. Yeah. Well, well,
kind of recap the game. Wewere on the one yard line with
ten minutes to go in the game, up twenty to seven on first down
and we snapped the ball over thequarterbacks head and they got it on the

twenty. So we're getting ready togo up twenty six till seven ten,
yeah, seven, and then theyflipped the gown and scored, and it
just kind of flips the game.And then they get the last drive there
with about uh there, it wasabout a minute and a half to go,
and they've got fourth and uh fourthand twelve from the from the thirteen,

so they could get a first downat the one, and he gets
to the two and we tackled Kyletackled. Wow, coach, I'm sorry,
it was exciting. I didn't knowany of that. I didn't finish.
Well, you know, we gota great YouTube crew. You can

told me that, coach. Ididn't know how it offended. So now

know U Scambia. You coached there, right, I did. I coached
there in two thousand and four,I was an athletic director and defensive coordinator,
and you know we played him forand we beat him for a state
championship in twenty twenty when Hugh Fountainwas there. Who was the head coach

at w S Neil now and wasit Charles Anderson. They got a proud
program. They you know, it'sthe playoffs. Anything can happen. In
twenty nineteen, when Peyton was ajunior, we played the number one team
in Bessemer at our place and losta close one and it almost beat us
the second in the first round ofplayoffs. We we had to score for
twelve seconds to go to win.So that's the thing I've stressed to the

kids. You know, the regularseason is over. Now is do or
die? Uh. They got atalented team. They got a receiver that's
six foot seven that can run andcatch, and I'm telling you he's an
athlete. And anytime another team gota guy like that, you know,
you just don't know what can happen. They got some good athletes. I
do think we're better than them.Up front. We've been better than most

(39:25):
everybody we played up front this year, and so we're going to we're going
to run the football, take careof it, and cut out penalties.
The Scambia County, let's see.I was looking at who they played.
They play what I know. Idon't know anything about that. I was
curious about that Banks Jackson. I'veseen if they played anybody that you had,

I don't. I didn't see anybody, don't see any common Wait.
Wait, we beat Banks sixty sevento eighteen. Okay they lost them.

means you're confused. We go ahead, We're good. Yeah, Well we're

talking about that game. Uh thirtyeight thirty four. That was the final
thirty thirty four. Uh. Youknow, another another close defeat for us.
Uh. I looked at some numberstoday. We've had four region losses.
If you take away too late touchdownsthat kind of sealed the game for
Central and Enterprise. Uh. Weended up losing by three, one,

four, and seven in our fourregion losses three point seven five points.
So somewhere going into next year,we got to figure out a way to
make more and more play here orthere. You know, we've had a
bunch of close losses in the lasttwo years, and you know, moral
victories or or you know, youknow, those don't count for anything.
So we'll go into next year.We've already started working on that. We

got thirty six kids coming back.There'll be seniors next year. Be a
big senior class for us. Weonly in nineteen this year, so yeah,
big, big, big, big, you know game last year too,
didn't Yeah, we had a bunchlast year. This year was you
know, I think I mentioned itearlier. This was this year's seniors were
they were all in eighth grade whenCOVID and all that garbage. Did you

(43:36):
mentioned a few weeks ago that firsttime I'd ever thought about it, Coach,
you didn't have I'll tell you whatyou well about you not having them
when they Yeah, we didn't havethem that summer. Say that again,
you didn't have them in spring orsummer when they were in the eighth grade
coming in coming to us. Youknow, so a lot of them we
didn't know. We lost a bunchof kids that year due to you follow
what he's saying, like he didn'thave any control. Yeah, yeah,

(43:57):
we're trying. You know, weobviously knew who a few of them were,
but you don't get the big chunkof them, you know, the
fifty or so kids that come outfor ninth grade. So and I know
a few other you know, Iknow Hoover dealt with it, Wade dealt
with it this year, and sofor us, you know, we had
nineteen seniors that hung in there,and I tell you what, it is
kind of a weird deal to thenight. You know, we're down thirty
one to fourteen with eight minutes togo and make it thirty eight thirty four.

(44:21):
And I thought that said a lotabout our kids and the seniors because
they, you know, they couldhave easily given up, and that thing
could have been forty five to fourteen, and you know, just a complete,
ugly, ugly score. But weended up scoring three times in the
last eight minutes or really seven anda half minutes, got an on sidekick,
stopped them, forced a punt,scored again, and then ended up

(44:43):
with an on side kick with abouttwenty eight seconds and just about got it.
And we would have had it ontheir forty with a chance to run
one play and then I mean,so, you know, tough loss.
Obviously, not getting the playoffs again, but this region is brutal. I
wish you know people, you know, I didn't know it would be this
tough. Really, you know,when we jumped up, I knew we

could compete with these kids and andthese other teams. But it's been really
tough. And I think that's whyyou see them go for and oh every
year when they play in the playoffsin that first round, I think,
yeah, yeah, you know,so I'm thinking, so enterprise to get
a really good coach with some coachesthat oh yeah, you know what I
mean. Yeah, because then doesa great job. Yeah yeah, they
kind of got some kids to playcoach that wasn't playing. Yeah, and

then those kids and hatred of eachother, you know, they're starting to
and they've got a you know,nothing against Smitty, but this guy fits
it is. Yeah, it's tough, and it seems to fit what Dothan
does or Dothan is school and uhyou know, and then of course you

still have Auburn in Central who havealways been good. So and then Prapel
was probably the one that's kind ofPrapel had they had a really tough year.
Uh you know, probably the firsttime in a law long time that
they're playing with a bunch of privalkids, and that happens, you know,
it happens. If you truly playwith kids in your city, you're
gonna have some down years. Yeah, and you know, from the past

(46:12):
they've had. I think they've builtthat thing into something that's really not yeah,
with a lot to transfer from thepast. And and JB played this
year with all kids that have grownup in it, you know, and
who knows, if he hangs around, they may be good next year.
They've got some good seventh the eighthgraders. I know that, So if
he's able to keep those guys,and of course we'll I think I did
the numbers today. We've got thirtysix juniors so they'll be seniors next year,

(46:35):
thirty six sophomores, so we're alreadyup to seventy two kids. And
then the freshman team this year hadabout forty five. So our numbers will
be right at about one hundred andfifteen again next year, and you know,
finally another good, big senior class. You expect any change in the
in ar alignment or pluckers, Ireally think, honestly, just I haven't
heard anything, but I have heardthat there may be twelve six a's and

(46:59):
mobiles, so that's going to bea big adjustment. Uh. And then
I think I can imagine they mightsend Doathan Enterprise South. I was oneing
to the mobile region again. Uhand and coach others and I were just
in there talking and we don't wantanother nine team region. Yeah, I
mean there, you got to thinkabout this week and have to win again

(47:21):
just to get in the playoffs.And these other teams are wrapping up region
play, you know, two weeksago with already in the playoff. Yes,
so yeah, man, there wasthere one A but Pok has been
through for two weeks. Yeah,and uh so I'm home to but we
have an at least an eighteen regionbecause that gives me three three non region
games. And uh and you canhave this week opening yeah you know if

you ended up, you know that'sthis the week we drew is our open
weekend region play. So but Ican see that happening that you got Lee
or excuse me, Laneer and Carvercombining this year. Oh I forgot about
that. So they they'll be aseven A. I think Lee might have
the chance to drop back down andbecause they are maybe third or fourth.
They might be right below us,So we're fifth from the bottom. I

think Lee is right below us orPercy Julian. Now, yeah, so
you don't you think you think itmight be a swap with those I think
possibly may drop back to six,just with their enrollment numbers. And then
you can mind Lanier and carp they'lllike they'll be they'll be in the middle

they you know, get those,get somebody in there to coach those

kids, and you know, andand it may take them a while.
They've been competing against each other solong. It may be yeah, you

play well in front of our people. We've had some games this year that

need some positive momentum moving into theplayoffs. So we need to play well
in front of our folks as weyou know, move into the playoffs coming

just like I tell all them,I don't know who to prepare for
yet until they tell us who we'replaying. Oh, I just want to

she had never even done. Infact, that was her first year that
I think she played. She playedsoccer when yep, and got up here
and we didn't have soccer at Dave. Now, how do I remember that,

first year there and she did realwell. Yeah, the qualified state every
year and that for him and helikes it and he likes football. They

their last junior high game. Youknow what, just the three A playing
five A and six age and thatseventh when you're talking, you don't see.
But he sits there and listens.Yeah, every he's watching. He's
not fiddling and he's listen. He'slike I am. I used to go
into the old coaches offices. Firstof all, growing up a direct department,

I want to hear everything. That'syour dad was everything. Yeah,
he was everything. All the talkwent on when I played high school football,
go t write him things in theback of the school, a little
crappy office. They go, yougo upround and they tape your ankles.
Well, I'd go praying and onceI get a Frida let everybody going from
the last And finally one day whenI'm said something and now I remember,

coach Flight said, he knows whathe's doing. He likes sitting up here
hearing what we're saying and what we'retalking about, and so yeah, he's
like me, he wants to listenand know, and well that's good.
I enjoy that, coach, becauseI can tell he really enjoys it.
All right. So last week,man, uh No got to beat back
thirty one one on Thursday. Uhafter we had a meeting. I mean,

(01:02:22):
I show him on when thirty onThursday. My you know, I
have a Division one linebacker. Theyrecruiting him to play strong safety. He's
a junior Jay Burns. He havejust fifteen tackles, a game leading receiver,
second leading Russia. We're running routesagainst there on Thursday. You know,
we don't want to go out therefor an hour. Pulls his dang
hamstring. Oh, coach, andwhen you make fifteen tackles a game at

(01:02:45):
a three as com when it happened, I mean it happened. He went
to the ground and everybody looked aroundAND's like, well, there went that.
So we we did play good.We were ahead with four seconds to
go at half fourteen thirteen. Theythrew a forty yard hell Mary the official

(01:03:07):
city caught it down. I don'tknow if he did or not, but
they counted he did. It's kindof like the thirteen penalties we had and
the one they had they played good. They played good, but without Jay
in that linebacker, it was toughto I bet you're talking about three day

(01:03:28):
stool. When you lose a collegefootball player type, it was hard and
the kids lost a lot of confidencebecause that. I could tell. Had
we played mistake free, I stillthink we'd had a chance. But we
made some mistakes in the secondary.We were allowed a kickoff return. The
kid, the backup that was supposedto be out there for the kid that

(01:03:52):
just ran the sixty yard touchdown didn'tgo when somebody wasn't supposed to be on
the field went on the field.Well, needless to save when it popped
ops. The one that ain't supposedto be on the field is where the
guy pops, and we shouldn't tackledhim. So anyway, another mistake,
another one, two or three mistakesmade it where we had to play perfect,

(01:04:17):
and we made those mistakes, andwithout without having a kid like Jay
Burns on the field, it wasit made it. It made it real
hard to win. And they gotthey got a they got a good football
team. I'm not sure how strongour region is. I keep looking at
the scores. You know, Itold everybody it's called for the playoffs.
You know, people already call andwant to know about this team that team

(01:04:38):
who were paired up with. AndI said, I really don't know how
strong our region is. And thereason I say it is we finished third
after graduating seventeen singers that started.We finished third and had a chance to
beat both of those teams in thefirst and second I said, so,
I ain't real sure how strong ourregion is this year. Some of my

(01:05:01):
coaches think that we could go ohand four in the other regions to the
other region and uh, we gota tough draw. We got Thomasville first
round. But you know, rightnow we're we got a tenth game.
We play Wicksburg. Yeah, andwe got to go all the way down
to the Florida line to play WicksburgHigh School. Yeah, I've been there
before, coach. It's just awide spot in the roads, yep.

(01:05:24):
But they have a good football teamand the kids play hard. And you
know, I kept up with themwhen I was at Ozark and then we
played them last year here and itwas a battle with us and US and
our good team against them, andthen they almost beat beat be Homer in
the playoffs. So they have agood football team, really, but they
graduated a lot just like we did. What's ironic, they play real Town

(01:05:47):
first round of the playoffs. Sowe go down there to play them week
ten. They come back up nextweek the Tellerpas County to play real Town
in the first round and seen themplay. They're pretty good. Coal Town's
pretty good, and they've known it'sthese kids win the sixth and seventh grade.
They were gonna have a three yearrun that started last year. Uh
and they so they knew that lastyear, this year, and the next

(01:06:08):
year in real Town has a chanceto be really good. H But you
know our kids are excited they wantto go play that. You know,
we've had a good week of practice. I had. We pulled back a
little bit. You're playing a nonregion game the week before the playoffs against
somebody. The only thing they knowis they played them last year. So
you know, we've we've lightened upa little bit. But we've had a

(01:06:29):
good week and the kids that practicedharden. It's like I said, if
that's all like an ask album isto practice hard and do what we asked
you. Linebacker, how long willhe be out? You know, the
hamstring, all right, So heFriday night, he went through warm ups,
he was dressed, went through warmups, but as soon as he
tried to sprint, it was that'sthe part he couldn't do. And and

(01:06:50):
if he can't sprint, he can'thelp us. But the other important thing,
if he can't run full of speedand sprint, he can't protect hisself
out there. Yeah, and there'sjust nothing he don't need to be out
there. So he couldn't have played. He and he wanted to, but
he physically couldn't. And I don'tthink he'll be back this week. And

(01:07:11):
I don't think he'll be back firstround playoffs. You know, there's times
ham strings, some paper ham strings, it takes four or five, six
weeks. It takes a long Somepeople are different than others. Well,
you won't even consider using them inthis game, right Wicksburg at Witsburg.
If he was epy, he'd beplaying, you know, I mean with
the injury. Yeah, of course, but he can't. He's not gonna
play Friday, he and I don'tthink he'll play next week. He can't

eat like at practice. He justgoes with the trainer. I'm not one
that's gonna hide in you know whatI'm saying. I mean he is,
he's out and I'll be shocked ifhe's ever to play again this year.
And it's not because he doesn't wantto. When you can't run, you
can't run. Oh yeah, hey, you know you're playing in the first
round. I won't know why anything. We'll talk about them next week.
Yeah, but he won't play inthat one when you you know, that's

the one thing about a bad hamstring. When you pull a ham you're
done. Oh yeah, so youjack anyway. But I will, I

Yeah, Jackson got to play somethe other night and you know,

got to see got to see himand him and Henry out there. That's
that's tough to prepare for those twobecause they're so different. You know,
one's like a Tim t Bow,the other ones sort of like a Peyton
Manning. So you know, uh, two really good quarterbacks, two really

the game, you had a goodgame. You did probably one of their
dawn years. Yeah, and youknow, they they were in a lot
of games and just like right thereat the end, ended up losing,
losing them missing some plays here,missing plays there, turned the ball over

know, we we did a good, really good job defensively of you know,
Ben did not breaking defensively. Idon't. I'm trying to think we
you know, we have we havegoals every week that we set for our
kids. And I want to say, eight out of the nine goals on
defense we met last week, andeight out of the eight out of the

nine goals on offense we met lastweek, which was you know, which
is good because you're playing a teamthat's you know, they are down for
Prattviel standards, you know, butthey still have some really good players.
You know. They got a kidthat got an album offer, another kid
that's got some big time offers.So you know, they've got some They've
got some talent. You know,It's just there was some I don't know

if it was uh. I thinka lot of it had to do with
turnovers this year too. You know, they turned them all over a little
bit, you know, just tryingto find some consistent quarterback play. So
they played a couple of different guys, you know, so and I think
they found the guy they wanted toplay, and you know, it was
pretty late in the season, sobut they got it. You know,

it's always good to be them,regardless of they're up or down. A
lot of history of absolutely and gota lot of respect for coach Wallace.
He does things right way. Now. You don't know where you're going to
be in the region. Uh notright now. Yeah, we're in Uh,
I don't know exactly where we're gonnabe yet. It could be anywhere
from four to two it's gonna bereally tough to get that too, spat

because you know, I think thatEnterprise holds that tiebreaker, and and they're
they're reagion guys have right now,we're all they got to do is win
one of the next two games thatthey've got I think this week, and
I think, you know, bothof them are probably favored, you know.
So it looks like the Enterprise isgonna be the two, will be

the three. That's what it lookslike. Yeah, it's got a way.
I figured out. Henry Allen isyour excuse me? Henry Allen played
in your quarterback, your starting quarterbackthat got hurted back. We talked about

a little more balance. It givesus a little away. We spread the
ball around a little bit, youknow, and Henry gives us that that,

Chris Spencer said when he was inmiddle school, he was the best linebacker

just a good athlete, great kid, you know, just one of those
kids that you love to coach andyou love to be around. You got

Noans got jag like they missed it. But he kind of touched on he
drew the bye week and I almostsaid something like he did draw it.

just the luck of the He plannedit two years ago when he wasn't in
that region, right, but hedrew it this year. And almost said

And it's hard, you know,when you're when you're seven A, when
you're in the nineteen region, yougot to play. You got to play

whoever wants to play. You reallycan't, you really can't, you know,
pick and choose. I mean we'rewe're we're actually talking about teams like
Don Bosco and teams like that rightnow, getting a national name in here
or either playing in like uh,you know, if if the State will
let us playing the kick Off youknow, anything like that, you know,
because you know, like what Thomashas had to do with the absolutely

private school in Nashville and then amg. Yeah, and it's tough to find
games, you know, I mean, we play Hoover, you know,
we play Ramsey because Ramsey can't findanybody play that. We're going to come
to us two years in a rowand we were going to play them,
and then their athletic director wanted tohave a home game, so you know,
of course absolutely not, absolutely not. You know, got to you

know, got a good relationship withtheir coach, so you know, it's
one of the things those type ofgames help you down line, you know,
because you get to see really goodteams. You know, you get
to play against really high competition.And when we talked about playing Hoover,
you know, me and him talkedabout doing a home and home and then
that opened up with the with theKickoff Classic, and you know, Alvin

call nas if we would play thatgame at the Kickoff Classic. And we're
always going to do whatever we canto help state, you know, and
uh, it gives our kids anopportunity to play in front of a big
crowd in a big, big atmosphere, so it's sort of a playoff atmosphere
to start the year. There.You go, well, coach, you
or you no, No, We'reat Smith's senior night. So you know,

it's one of the things where youknow, uh, normally you would
talk about maybe playing this game onThursday. Maybe Yeah, but uh,
I haven't even said nothing to himbecause it's their senior night, you know,
so we want them to have agreat senior night and enjoy it and
their their kids to you know,soak it all in and just enjoy their

seniors like your kids getting better,Coach, except for your lineback around.
Yeah, he had actually had surgeryyesterday morning. Everything went good, so
you know, really excited that thateverything went good with him, and you

doubled up Calhoun. They clinched thatspot. You want to talk about that

game briefly. Coach Calhoun was agood team, very athletic, had a
very fast quarterback. Oh my god, he was really fast. Really yeah,
but uh, we settled down inthe second half and did some good
things. We were able to pullaway that game and ended up winning forty
to to twenty. Okay, Andyou gotta actually gotta buy you gotta open

week, yes, sir, theweek before the playoffs start the week to
heal up, prepare whatever you gottado, or you're already looking at at
me or oh yes, sir,we've we've started looking at some film.
Usually what coach Jones tries to do. We always tried to get that last
week of the regular season for ourbive week, so we kind of get
some guys killed up who might havebeen banged up during the regular season and

just give us some more time toget ready for that playoff game. So
I think that's going to help usand I think we'll be ready to go
next week. Mellory talk about themfor a second, coud very strong team.
They like to run the ball,very strong. So we just we

just got to come to play physicalh football. If we do that,
stay away from penalty, stay awayfrom turnovers. Like I've been saying all
year, like our young guys growingup a lot. Yes, oh yeah,
yeah. We've had some some gamesthat kind of required them to I
think, uh last week the weekbefore against uh Calhoun, h not Calhoun,

but uh since Ranville. That gaveus some time to actually grow up,
and guys had to step up inthose games. So I think they're
ready to go into the playoffs.So we and we always tell our guys
after the regular season, our freshmansophomore is you you pretty much go up
a class because it's it's not regularseason no more. So guys understand that.

So I think they're ready to gohealth health wise. We got a
few guys getting banged up, butthat's pretty much the standard when when you
know, when you get this fardown in the season. For the most
part, I think we will haveeverybody suited up to play next Friday.

coordinator but it where has done anamazing job getting those guys ready. So
uh, I think our special teamsis definitely a strength of our kick When
he was there that they ran back, was that the only time he didn't

he didn't everybody took that playoffs,everybody he didn't kick it in the I

we've been playing with a lot ofyoung guys and uh we were a

little shorthanded Friday, so we hadto, you know, play a little
bit different scheme than we've been playingand uh, you know it worked out,
and you know, we held themto their lowest point total of the
year and you know, got abig win. You certainly did coach twenty
to seventeen. You know, thisweek you're at Valley. It's a non
region game, but that's got agood team. They got a really good
team. You know, they're sevenand two, and uh boy, they

got some really good athletes. Uh, you know, they're scary. You
know, we're gonna have to play. It's not you know, it's not
a game where you can just saywe're gonna rest everybody and go up there
and win. You know, Idon't believe in doing that anyway. You
know, Uh, you know,it's important to me that we honor the
game. And you know, y'allhonor the game by playing to win.
And you know that's what I toldour kids. We've had a good week

of practice. Uh, you know, enthusiasm has been good, and you
know we're going up there to tryto win the game, and we're gonna
have to play well. Uh.They've got some really good skill guys and
their quarterbacks and a D one athletehe's just decommitted from Missouri. I think.
