everybody. Welcome to Moe's Barbecue. On the side of the twenty twenty three
High School Coaches Show, pretending totell you buy them what the Pete Clinic
and what a beautiful evening we havehere on this Wednesday. It's Jeff Ragland
his hit set. They're always ontime. It wouldn't be right with heaven
Saster putting the hit set on righton game time. But we welcome everybody
to our High School Coaches Show.We meet here every Wednesday night. We've
(00:49):
been doing it now for about sevenweeks. You six seven weeks? Coach
are Anthony ware Notice like Blue Devils, how many games if you play this?
We would be my four. Wehad a five weeks, so this
would be the sixth week. We'vebeen here. Six Yeah, good to
see you, Ji. We werewe were here before the first excuse the
first week of the season. Wewere here and we've been here everywhere.
(01:10):
So Jeff Saster's there, Jason LeeMan Riggs deepmore, and we got Anthony
Jones with a noticecucle Blue Devil. It's good to see you. Coach had
a b B Coachman lifted the littlewaits Jeff in case you hadn't noticed.
Yeah, I know he he alwayshas good dis way. Hey. Battle
of Highway fourteen last week, BigBattle twelve six was a final. We
talked about it briefically before the wegot started. You don't talk about a
coach. Uh. It was uhtwelve eight, wasn't it. It was
(01:34):
twelve six, twelve six. Ithought you said twelve three. Excuse me,
Yeah, it was uh twelve eight. It was what we were twelve
six. It was what we expected. Uh. You know a lot of
people didn't give us a chance becausewe are the underdogs. When you're the
underdog, anything can happen. Whenthey kicked us, kicked off to us,
Uh turned to sixty five yards, opened up the storing and uh missed
(01:57):
a two point And then after thatit was just a bunch of good defense
going back and forth. But whathurt us We had three turnovers in the
first first half. Cool and wein the first three games we played,
we had zero turnovers and one ofthose turnovers end up being the touchdown for
(02:20):
them. We stopped the two point, so it's six six at the half,
and we still we turned it overon a two point conversion. We
had three Okay, like one timewe was driving in through a pick.
We just had had got a bigthree and out and uh got a pick.
And then we also at the beginningof the game we had a muff
punt also that we was on theside of the field. So we feel
(02:42):
like in the first half we controlledthe whole game. But in the second
half, Uh, they fleshed theirmuscles on us a little bit and all,
like I said, probably they tookthe opening kickoff and went down to
school. It went up twelve six. After that, it's still defensive defense
going had it trying to just getus. Uh. We ended up getting
to stop what about three four minutesin the game. And I'm telling my
(03:04):
guys, here's you send the otherstory right here. Guys, we go
down to school, were clicking extrapoint. We can get out of here.
Yeah, well we we drove itdown to about day thirty, but
unfortunately we had a fight breakout inthe game up top in the in the
stands that stopped the game. Yeah, and uh we hadn't been now you
talking about like people fighting in thestands. Okay, Oh, it stopped
(03:27):
the game for about a good tenfifteen minute while you were on your drive.
Yeah, and it Uh that killedthe momentum to us because when we
came out, we we tried torun a freeze play and we got a
false start and we came back gota holding pimoto. So now what we
had going now it's first and thirtyagainst a good stings of defense like that.
(03:49):
You know, we ended up turninga lot of high schools go first
and thirty counts. We don't havea play for that. They ain't ten
yard ten yard plays three times,we uh end up turning it over on
downs and they get it and runthe clock out. Well, you guys
obviously played where of coach. Iknow that don't mean a w but it
sounds to me like, Jeff, these guys and you, coach, you
tell us they're growing up. Yeah, we uh I told him today.
(04:11):
Uh you look back at the schedulefrom from here on out. We was
owing four going into this week. Now we're won in three, but you
got the three we lost. Welost to the net team twenty two six,
We lost to the Mapleville team onthe road twenty six nothing, and
you come back and lose to thenumber five ranked team twenty six. I
see a lot of growth inventority. Now now we gotta put it together and
(04:34):
only second half of the season anduh try to get into the playoffs.
Well, coach, you won inthree, but you oh, you're one
in two in the region. That'sright, right, you got you got
a bunch of one in twos inthe region and two three and ohs and
they're gonna play each other. That'slot poking Mapleville. Then you got a
two and one building's league, soyou still got you control your destiny.
Yeah, yeah, that's you gotto four region games, that's right.
(04:56):
Yeah. So we got a chairand you're open this week, right,
you know we got a whole noyou got uh pike, Yeah, we
it's homecoming for us this week,so uh, we definitely need to get
that when to get ready for wehave ever been at home and we got
such a Handville at home before weended. All right, Pike is it
Pike County? Who you got?Okay? I was just making sure,
(05:19):
well, hey, coach, youhey, you control your destiny. You
could get some help from other people. But being one in two right now,
this is a pretty a pretty toughregion and you got a bunch of
teams that are wanting two and I'massuming that they uh got uh those losses
maybe off of each other, butlots of poker know the su uh Maplesville
hadn't lost to reading games, soright, so we say we control our
(05:42):
destiny. What do you do?Yeah, what do you do this week?
Coach? Before we go? Whatkind of what do you do with
your team? Right now? Wejust got to come out and play,
and uh, I'm just looking forus to stay away from the States and
uh have fun. I told himit's homecoming. Uh, it's it's fun
for y'all. It's definitely fun forme. So at least y'all can have
fun. But we we gotta comeout like we did last week. We
had to pack super Pact house lastnight. I was gonna ask you about
(06:04):
your crowd. So it's probably gonnabe another one this week as well homecoming,
so we'll have a lot of peoplein town. We gotta deal on
the show. Are you gonna whatabout the young ones? Coach? You
know last year you had some reallyyoung players and they were they started,
uh, they temperators and they playedvery well. Got a year and a
half under the bad Yes, grownman football. Uh okay, all right.

(07:11):
We go back longer than Yes,you graduated win ninety two. See how
I can see there we go.I would call it his games when he
was he'd been doing games rope blackfor twenty years. But when you graduated,
husband, was I was I agood player? Were awesome? You
were. It's been good to see. It's good to see you coach.
Absolutely yeah, and I can't I'dbe remiss if I didn't bring up basketball.
(07:31):
I'm still proud of you for that. Man. That's awesome. I
still I wake up in the morningsometimes I can't believe it. I mean
I walk around and I we wantto state that you did and hold on
undefeated, undefeated, undefeated. Iain't got ze nary loss on this guy.
That's awesome. I'll tell this storyand I'll know we're talking football,
but I got a brag on you. Excuse me running the direct league in
(07:54):
the afternoon, which asked for andwe have officials come in and I I
was tell you, I've asked fourof'em. I'm like, tell me
about mid January. Should give methe best airy basket. Valley Valley,
Valley Valley, and buddy, youyou did a coach, so good job.
I'm I'm proud of him. Youtold me you had a lot of
them coming back, so yeah, and got a bunch coming back, actually
four starters coming back. All of'em play football. And we got finally
(08:16):
got the big center out there,Uh, Brandon Thomas to play football this
year, and he plays receiver,a six six receiver and he looks like
a D one football play. Thereyou go, there you go, there
you go. All right, coach, let's talk better around football. You
were open last week, right,Yes, So what did you guys go
through last week? Yeah? Yeah, just trying to get back to the
(08:39):
fundamentals all. You know, yougot an off week, trying to heal
everybody up, trying to get everybodyyou know, going back and have a
chance to to know, working onsome tackling and and pursue drills and and
you know, catching and running andjust just doing some basic stuff and just
trying to get some kids here.We got a chance to watch some film
(09:01):
on some uh teams we gotta playin some other teams we gotta play after
this game. So just got achance to get some rest and relax a
little bit. Yeah, and Iknow this will be your You got two
more road games, will be threestraight with the open week. You got
Russell County nine Region game, Yes, Russell County nine Region. Yeah,
tell me what you see in RussellCounty Cup. Oh, good program.
(09:24):
They don't lost a couple of gamesclose games, so you know, you
can't gauge them on that. Ithink they owe and four but lost to
Harris County by three. Uh theylost to I can't remember the other team
by three. They lost to themabout by three, Harris County three,
Stan Hope Elmore twenty four twenty one, Carver thirty four to six, and
we tom Go fifty two thirty six. Yes, so you know, has
(09:46):
some close ball games out besides theuh last one. But we got some
good players out there. They gotsome playmakers out there, so we gotta
pay attention to'em. But we'rejust trying to get better, uh with
are currently three and one, tryingto go to four and one, and
we haven't been four and one ina while. So just just trying to
play some good ball and make theplayoffs too. And oh in the region
though, coach to an olden regionsounds good and it looks like it's we're
(10:09):
headed for a uh uh a classof Titans with uh sixth clake. We
I don't want me to get thatfour. It's just it's just it's just
young men here that they got agame this week right, coach gig,
Yeah, absolutely, but I meanhe told the truth. You know,
yes, a horned coach. Hornuh, Hall of fame coach. Been
(10:31):
doing a great job down now.You know, last year it was sixty
six the whole game. We playedthem, and they bust one open us
on us at the last play andbeat us twelve to six last year.
So it was a good game lastyear. You're right, all right,
so Valley, last year you beatthis team twenty seven, twenty three.
They're oh and four. But youknow, coach likes his team, so
(10:52):
they're I think they're close to breakingout. We don't. You don't want
him to break out against you guys. Nah, don't don't want him bring
that. I think it's home coming. Oh it is. I think it's
their homecoming. So okay, it'sjust been trying to get the kids prepared
for the atmosphere they are gonna facein Russell County, you know, and
they're gonna have a big crowd there. But you know, like we're telling
our kids, let's we got ouridentity, let's do what we do.
(11:13):
We're gonna do what we do.We're gonna play good defense, were gonna
run the ball, control the ball, and try to hit some big plays
and and and just see what happens. It sounds so simple. But if
you can do what you just said, you win the game. Absolutely.
Everybody wins the game, absolutely everybody. Yeah, and basketball too. He's
(11:33):
right, you can win. He'sright. And and and it's funny you
say that. We got on thatfrom that championship team in basketball. Ye,
nine players that play football. Wewere talking, that's awesome. Awesome
plays football. So then let mejust start here. Here's the five a
defending state title. Ain't lost agame. Nine players playing football and basketball,
(11:58):
y'all, hear me, coach andnine Well, ain't nobody apology?
I mean, I applaud you forthat. Go ahead, Well, nobody's
gonna push him around in the gym. No, that's and ain't nobody exactly
That's what I'm talking about. SoI applaud you. I appalled Coach Hunter.
Well, first off, the youngmen, but YouTube coaches for locking
and working together. Because Bally roundquarterback quarterback Roger Rodge, Coach Rodge coming
(12:20):

High School Coaching Show. We're comingto you live Moles Original Barbecue. I'll

They kicking fops the game nineteen thirteenten. Just swallow his food there
right here at mosbark Yeah, Imean what how mean he? He just
pointed at me. I just hadto have a second. You guys,
we had to get in front ofyou. Yep. They were a deep
(13:13):
conversation. We got something. We'retalking. We're talking football. Let me
tell you something, folks about eightten years ago, I said, Sasser,
I don't know it, or wasit fifteen years ago? Uh?
This first state man, valid Christianfirst eight men. I don't know a
man. I know it's football, but I want you to get it instead.
That man is the eight man guruon the market on the Coaches Show.
(13:35):
But well, you know more, and I know you know he knows
he does he not coach? Doeshe not do a good job? I
keep him on his toast. Thereyou go. I know more about everything
you do. Rolland Bell. Yougot three coaches. Introduce your coaches and
we'll talk about your whopping land lastweek, Coach Webb Newman, he's the
offensive coordinator. And uh, coachJoseph Webb, he's the two webs.
(13:58):
I got two webs. Yeah,he's he's coaching training. We're working with
him. He's coming along, allright. All right, So what was
the final last week? It waseighty four forty four. Yeah, that's
a lot. That's a lot ofpoints. Coach, you said you were
gonna score a lot of points. You would be gonna be worship well wrinkles
at with your offense. But youtook your JV defense right. We we
(14:20):
went in and we'd already talked withthe other the other coach as well,
you know, to make sure theywere fine with it, because you know,
if they weren't fine, we weregonna you know, get the win.
And then just back off and let'slet's get this game over with.
But you know, when the gamewas over, they had put up forty
four points. He came up tome after the game. He said,
thank you very much. That's themost points we'd scored in sixteen years.
(14:41):
The parents are happy, the kidsare happy. I'm happy. Thanks for
the sportsmanship. All right, itwere good, We're good. Hey,
well that was go ahead. Soundslike he did what he's supposed to do.
Yeah. This week, right right, Cornerstone is undefeated. They beat
spring Wood in overtime two weeks ago. Common opponent we've had so far,
(15:05):
Springwood and then North River. Now, we we played terrible against Springwood and
you know, it bit us intobut big Time came out and we did
a lot better the second half.I think we're better, a lot better
than we were back then North Riverand we played We played North River about
the same they did. I Ilike our chances. We've developed a defense
(15:28):
to stop. Now they've got astud running back or not running back quarterback.
Seems like almost every week he's throwingfor two hundred yards and he's running
for two hundred yards. And wemet that young man did me, uh,
the one from Cornerstone. Now,I'll talk about the quarterback from Corners,
right, and I think we've developedsomething for him that's it's gonna hopefully
(15:52):
keep him in check. Spring Woodthought they were gonna keephim in check two
and it didn't work. Hopefully we'llbe the first. But you know,
he he's got one receiver that hethrows to most of the time, and
I've got, you know, mybest defensive back on him. When did
they play They played spring With twoweeks ago. That's the game he lost
at the end with the oh wow, yeah, yeah, yeah, they
(16:17):
okay, yeah, they had ascore. Car I got it all right,
I see what you're talking. Yeah. I mean, you know,
Coach Birch and we we talked twoor three times a week every week.
I mean this past week we wereon the phone at one o'clock in the
morning Saturday morning. You know,we He wasn't tired yet, and I
wasn't tired yet a matter of fact, I hadn't even got home yet.
But uh, you know, hesaid, you know, look, wouldn't
(16:40):
he's played us? He played Cornerstone, and of course Cornerstone beat him.
And he said, Coach you're betterthan they are. So he said,
go get him. I need youto do like full I need to do
as well. Well can you doit, coach? Can you guys do
it well? I mean we beathim last year and it was the same
thing coming out looking at this becausethe only under they're the only undefeated team
(17:03):
in the eight man because I don'tknow, I know there's not a region,
there's just well it's the ai SAeight man region. They're six of
us. So yeah, right nowthey're five and oh. Overall they're two
and oh in the region, we'rethree. You and spring Woods three and
one year two and one, oneand one's Evangel and Metterview and North River
(17:25):
or Old Right, so right nowif every end of day three and Old
spring Wood two and Old Cornerstone twoand one's Southern Prep and one and one
Evangel of Christians. But a lotof football left. You got two region
games left, right, Yes,we've We've got this week and then Evangel
of Christians, Orderstone in Evangel atthe end of the city season. Yes,
Evangel out of Montgomery. Correct,is the one out of Alabastao they
(17:48):
AI say school No, okay, might be next year who knows y'all just
play him because well we we playbecause it's pretty close, and you know,
we always want to keep checking wherewhere are we? I mean,
we know they're the best in thecountry and you know that Division one level,
and we want to see are wethere yet? And now we hadn't
(18:10):
been there yet, so you know, I haven't done my job yet.
I came into Southern Prep to buildthe program, and I mean it's built
up, but it's not it's notgood enough yet, so I'm still working
on it takes some time to anycoach, it does. All right,
this week? Good luck? Howlong? How long a trip is that?
It's only about an hour and fifteenminutes? Okay, not mad at
(18:33):
all? All right, Southern PrepRoland, Ben and gentlemen, let's talk
he talks to much he does. We're gonna put it to Mike Off next

Good to see you guys. Seesee coach is always good to see you.
(20:02):
Coach. You know, I wishI could come watch you play in
the clock not running the second half. But that's good for you, I
guess, right, or is itnot? It is? It's good.
It's good and bad, and youknow it's hard to get everybody, everybody
in on uh you know when yougot clock running and I should say because
he blew out another team. Butyou you know, you don't want to
beat people that bad. And thensometimes you can't help it, even even
young guys are scoring. That's nota I started slab at the coach or
(20:23):
anything like that. It's just youknow the fact that they're down a little
bit, and uh, we gota pretty good football team, so you
do. It's good to get toget all the guys in, but you
know they want to play a littlebit more. And you won fifty six
to seven. By the way,we'll talk about that's just an introduce as
young man. You got two youtwo the left there plays on your team.
All right. We got Charlie Lloydhere tonight. Charlie's number two.
He's been with us two years, that right, Charlier, Yes, it's
(20:45):
the second year. Charlie is ajack of all trades. Charlie plays receiver,
he plays outside linebacker, he playsa little bit of running back for
us. He's on special teams. You know, the biggest thing Charlie does
is being self is your practice. You know. We we got a guy
that we're facing us, a goodrunning back or good receiver. What Charlie
plays that guy on scout team forus. So he he does a little
(21:07):
bit everything for us. And Charlie'sa fine young man, and uh he's
doing a good job. All right, Charlie, you agree with all that
you check all that off, yes, sir? All right, So what
position do you prefer? Charlie putthat mich a little bit close to your
mouth there you go. Oh,to be honest, like, I just
prefer what can uh help the teamthe most. Keep talking, you're good.
Go ahead, you're good. Uhyou're not that shot, now,
(21:30):
come on, come on talk.I mean, I just like to play
the position where I can just helpus to be in a situation to win.
All right. Tell me that you'vebeen out two years, yes sir,
you like you're liking it, Yes, sir. So you played on
championship team last year, yes, sir. All right, so tell me
what you think about your team rightnow. You had a tough loss over
guns would, and you've had twostraight blowouts, So yes, sir,
(21:52):
I think I think we have along road ahead of us. I mean,
not like hard, but we hit. We have a long way to
go to where we want to be. We have to work really hard.
All right, go ahead, keepwhat I'm sorry. I mean, we
have a lot of improvement we canmake and we just we have to work
hard every single day to get wherewe want to be. So that's about
(22:15):
it, all right now, Timo. It's the games where you play.
Were like last two weeks. Thisweek you got a team, you got
targ Academy. They've lost one game. What are you thinking about this week?
I meant to say you had twogames you didn't had to play four
quarters because of the clock ram,but I was figured you might have to
play four this week. Uh yeah. Talk is they're definitely not bad.
Uh. They're really fast on theiroffense. They like to get outside.
(22:42):
Uh. We can't miss any assignmentsreally, I mean, we just we
have to be at the top ofour game for us to uh come out
and win. That's all I would. You've been well this week, you're
feeling good? Yes, A bunchof folks hadn't felt good, have you,
Yes, sir, and we canovercome that. There you go,
there you go, everybody make practice, Yes, sir? All right?
(23:03):
Did he did a good? Coach? You doing? He didn't. He
did a good job. I couldn'tget him to say his favorite position.
Well, and then he's he's ateam he is a team guy. He's
probably better at slot receiver, that'swhat he does, play inside outside and
you know, a little running backfor us, and he's on the deepning
side too, So yeah, he'sdoing it. He's doing good for us.
All right, coach, that's that'suh. Jake White had a good
game last week. You had abunch of your quarterback had a good game.
(23:26):
Real quick with that, and thenwe'll move to a talk. I
didn't give you a lot of timeto talk about your game. Oh it's
fine that Yeah, Like I said, we we did, uh what you're
supposed to do when you'd better thanteam. We got down on him early
and you we had uh. Italked tuesday morning a little bit about we
had a set of plays and we'regonna go the super fast you know,
just run, run, run,and soon they put the ball down,
we start again. But we goout of the first series and we run
(23:48):
jet sweep and Jake scores. Wecome back out run the same play.
We're gonna do the same five uhhand off on jet sweeping and and uh,
he scores again. So I tookcoach Wade. I said, guy,
if we're gonna run our five plays, you got to go play number
two so you know, you geta chance to get all of them on
film. So we did that, and then we knew we slowed down and
started running plays in like we knowhim to do. But our guys had
(24:11):
had a good football game, andyou know, we we we jumped out
on them early. And like yousaid, we got gotta play everybody on
the night. Yeah, I havenot played and a common opponent, have
you No, I don't think so. No, No, not yet.
Nope. No, I have notplayed anybody they played. Now you get
him at the end of the year. Yep, that's right. So like
I said, they they're they're agood football team. You're talking about Targo,
(24:33):
which we're talking about Yeah, okay, we're gonna talk Okay, Yeah,
Talker is good football. Yeah,Charlie, he flipped. But Charlie
mentioned that you know they got Theygot a couple of guys that you know,
if you don't tackle well, theycan take the distance on you.
You know. So we worked ontackling all week. We hadn't done a
great job of tackling on the outsideon edge last two weeks, so we
really worked on that and uh andguys got better. And you know,
(24:55):
we did something this week we haddone probably all season and much of last
year. We we actually tackled tothe ground. You know, we had
to be physical. Uh, wegot after each other and you know,
if we got somebody heard so big, we had to get better. So
we did a lot of tackling thisweek. We did a lot of uh
full speed team stuff and uh,I actually think we got back. We
had had three good days of practiceand we're going in the morning and and
(25:15):
have our normal Thursday morning practice anduh it's always the best one. Everybody
back for them, it was seeit gonna be back. Well, I
think so probably day to day.Hey, it's like a more we got
that man, we got we gotkissed down on the sideline and uh,
but everybody's at practice. Uh,everybody's trying, they're doing the best.
Uh, even Miles is back thisweek. His uh, his ankles held
up another he can play, sowe should be full gold this week.
(25:37):
Gottill, I want you to talkabout your your kicker role. Legs man,
he's done so good, coach.Has he not kicking one of them?
Has everyone him been in the endzone? I think at late in
the game he hit one that maybehit a yard on the field rolling through
Bookay, you know he's he's perfecton the year. We have touchbacks and
uh he's said, I think fourkicks now completely out of the playing field.
Go ahead. He did that lastyear a lot and then uh,
(26:00):
one team just ran off the field. I can't Yeah that was I can't
remembered the show anything else, butuh no, sir, good to see
you. Man of many words, you did really good. Charlie one more
time. What's your favorite position? You can say it, Uh, receiver.
That's my boy. That's Charlie andthat's bust. He's got a coach,
Dan, he's got a kada ofAuburn High. When we come back
(26:22):
to modes like me, you getme skinny molds. He's seven times.
(26:45):
I am welcome back to modest BARBIEQside of the high school. Coaches Show,
presented to you by the Pete theClinical on ninety seven point seven Kicker
FM and Fox Sports The Game nineteenthirteen ten. Time to turn our attention
to Auburn High God to see youcoach girl right, well that ain't that
didn't got real? Well? Good? See Coach Grider to my left,
Coach Keith, if it's what's goingon? So brother, y'all we were
(27:06):
good. We start mornings off ofcoachers on Wednesday and we close them and
out. Ain't I lucky? Man? Aren't you used to get to call?
Yeah? We do too. Allright, you got two young men
over here. I know one ofthem, but oh we don't have a
headset. But we're gonna produce himanyway. Since the Michael gun, Hey,
Michael're gonna let you talk in yoursecond or Michael plays corner for us.
He's a junior. And then wegot Andrew Han who's a senior.
(27:27):
And he is the jack of alltrades. He plays a little bit everywhere.
He's played everything from running back tocorner. Nice when it's for strong
safety. You know, you maysee him play some line back, as
I mean, he plays a littlebit of everywhere. The kid can play.
How you doing up, Andrew?I'm doing great. I'll try to
call you Andrew, since I callyou hand all the time, I know
(27:48):
that everybody calls me haunt. Allright, Han there you got So how's
everything being man? Oh it's beengreat and I've been having a lot of
fun. You have, Yes,transition pretty good? Yes, sir.
He transferred from the scott this year. So how you know you like itythen
you you played a little corner nowyou're safety. Yes, sir, I've
enjoyed at safety a lot. Imean it's a nickel, but I really
(28:08):
enjoy it. I like I liketackling mainly. I don't really enjoy coverage
as much as I enjoy just hittingpeople and playing football. I like it.
Tell it all right now? Youyou ran the ball a lot last
year. Do you miss that?Yes, sir, I mean I've missed
it a little bit. But Ienjoy just playing football, just being out
there. I mean, that's that'sreally what I love. So rather hit
(28:30):
somebody than cover somebody. Yes,sir, I think we got that.
Damn coach. Did you remember that? And you need it right? No?
No, I love it. Hecame up on a screen last week
about destroying kid had a boy andhe's he got he's also got it with
a head hunter or some kind ofwar. Yeah, yeah, ring that
out all right, and you didgood. I let him you flip over
while we talked to coach uh coachbig Win last week, just blew him
(28:52):
out with fifty eight. Yeah, there you go. Yeah. It was
a good game first quarter and thenwe sort of pulled away, you know,
had some had some guys make someplays. Defense played real well.
You know, it was one ofthem things where you know, we sort
of got acclimated to the speed. They got some speed, they got some
athletes, so got acclimated to thespeed out of the second quarter and we
(29:15):
were we were putting the ball inthe end zone. So I think that
uh, our guys did a reallygood job of of folcusing and getting tune
down. It was seven to sevenin the first quarter, and then I
think we put it. I thinkit ended up being thirty one to seven
and a half time or something likethat, and then you know, then
we sort of turned on a littlebit second half and then got all those
(29:37):
young guys in there the fourth quarterand got them a lot of playing time.
So it was a good night. You know, we got home game
at the Dug. Got all thoseguys got to play, you know,
homecoming. You know, all thosedistractions are away now now we can focus
on some football. There you gooda dipping out of region. Yeah,
interesting game going to the Legion fieldwhere do y'all know? Han, But
(30:00):
Michael he won his first state championshipat the stadium. Y'all will play that
Friday night, so you can tellyour team that's so that's where he won
his first state championship. That's right. We need to keep my record perfectly.
Yeah we did, alright, talka little bit about the Ramsey.
Yeah, Ramsey's very athletic, youknow, uh, quarterbacks really good.
He slinging around. They've got somemultiple wide receivers who were good, you
(30:21):
know, the running backs and allstate kid you know, was MVP of
the state championship game last year, really really good player. You know.
Defensively, Quentin Reese's son his middlelinebacker and he was back. Uh yeah,
yeah, they're really really good.So they got a really good football
team. I think they've lost onegame to Parker, who's right, and
Parker is you know, they they'reloaded this year. So, uh,
(30:44):
it's gonna it's gonna be, youknow, interesting game. All right,
Your quarterback situation looks like Henrietta hada good week, had a good week
last week, and then you gotyour other two sophomores played too, right,
Yeah, Max Hammer and Crawford lostmentioned their names. Oh no,
they're good. That's good. Imean, look, you're going to get
to mention their names a lot overthe next couple of years. So those
two guys are good players. Andyou know, our receivers are playing really
(31:07):
well right now. Running the tworunning backs are playing really good right now.
So you know, it's one ofthem things where you know, I
think we're I think we're starting toplay well. We're still in survival mode
a little bit. We still gotsome guys banged up. We will get
tie tie back this week. Arestarting a linebacker. He'll be back this
week, so hopefully, you know, uh, he'll be one hundred and
(31:30):
ten percent and you know we wecan rock along. But Michael, yes,
sir, jumping on in here. How are you? How's everything?
Man? It's been great? Allright? How how's everything with the team?
How you like every where you're at? Well? This week we got
to focus money the secondary because theylike to pass the ball a lot.
And yeah, we just gotta befundamentally sign Okay, So he likes to
hit somebody, so you got tocover somebody. I like. So how
(31:52):
long you played the ball? I'vebeen playing so it's like third grade?
Okay, okay, all right? You enjoy playing for him. Yes,
he's a great coach. He is. He is a good guy too.
He has a good time, right, y'all. Gonna take care of business
in legion field. But guess Ialways remember now first state championship games this
year. I gotta compete you on. I got it. Man's good to
see you, but keep it up. Michael, good to see you all
(32:13):
right. Always good to see coach. Thanks sir. I appreciate love y'all.
Love you two. That's Auburn Highcoach Keith athe Han and La Michael
last name La Michael. Was done? Got it? And Andrew Han.
We'll be back with Springwood. We'regonna ta no, We're gonna come back
and talking with Chambers Academy at MoseBarbecue. High School Coaches Show presented by
the Orthopetic Thin continues in a moment. Thanks got Welcome back to the High
(32:39):
School Coaches Show. We're coming toyou live from Moe's Original Barbecue and it's
brought to you by the Orthar PeterClean Most Original Barbecue. The Kicker ninety
seven point seven Fox forced the Gamenineteen thirteen ten and we got coach Jason
Aller up. Last week coach hada big win against the best from Kata.
Yeah. Well, well, butthe last two weeks we've been we've
(33:01):
been clicking. We're playing really welland kids, we've had great practices.
I like our team right now, like we're playing our best ball. We
kind of put the hammer down lastcouple of weeks and uh, we've cut
out a lot of penalties, We'vefigured out who we are offensively, we're
doing a good job schematically and whatwe're trying to do, and the kids
(33:22):
are executing and we're taking care offootball, and then we're playing really well
on defense. Like, well,I mean it was a big win.
You got it. You got aoff week is just about the time of
the year. You went off weekin the middle of the season like this,
Yeah, I guess so. Idon't like off weeks at all.
I'd rather not have an off week. It's just me. I just it's
it's hard to but our kids havedone well this week or you know,
but you gotta push that button insideof you says go knowing you don't have
(33:45):
a game on Friday, you know, and you know, I just like
the routine of playing every Friday. That's just me. What do you do
during off week like this, coach, and you work on some things for
you as far as your team goes, like working on some fundamental things,
or do you look ahead for theopponent. We've done a little bit of
everything. We gave him off Monday, we felt like we needed to get
(34:06):
and we're giving them all Friday becausethis is you know, it's every day
from now on. So we evaluatedwhat we're good at and what we need
to get better at. So we'vespent some time doing that, and then
we've looked down the road to tryto see majority of what kind of game
playing we're gonna be executing or whowe're gonna be facing, and trying to
spend a little time on that typeof sitting those type of situations, but
(34:29):
really not preparing for any one singleopponent. Yeah, this is week seven
right here, coach. Yeah,I know, I didn't really you you
actually started a week Yeah, yeah, than the AHSA. How you got
Abbeville Christian after that? Coach?Uh, that's opponent you played in the
championship. Yeah, twenty four fifteen, we played him. Man, Uh
(34:50):
they beat us, and we hada lot of battles with Abbeville over the
last seven or eight years. Anduh so yeah, those three games,
you got Abbeville christ and coming upnext Friday making East and uh Hooper,
that'll tell the tale for US andregion play hoop you know some of the
Hooper there. Yeah, we're talkingabout Van go ahead coach at Yeah.
(35:16):
But they're having a good year, you know, so I'm excited for them.
But uh, you know this,it has been a good week.
Just to kind of catch a break, I guess. But like I said,
I'd rather I'd rather keep playing everyif you made the schedule, you
would, right. What if youhad to take a week off, would
it be the last game? Idon't No, I definitely wouldn't want to
do that. Or you don't wantthe last one. I don't like the
(35:37):
last one. I just feel likeyou get out of you get out of
rhythm. How about that? Andgo into the playoffs. Yeah, you
might start out slow out the gates. Interesting all right, I know they're
two weeks away and we're gonna talkabout it next week or what? What
talk about Eddyville just a little bitcoach? Yeah, Well I haven't watched
so much. But the guy that'scoaching them coach for me about three or
four years ago at Chambers, andhe moved on into a couple of jobs
(35:59):
between now and then they hired himbe Adville Christian. His names Matt Mills.
So he'll he'll know a lot aboutus. He'll be kind of familiar
with us and uh what we do, and so uh that'll be a challenge.
We have to kind of change someverbiages and play calls things like that.
You know. That's kind of whenyou when you lose somebody from your
staff, like you you see NickSaban or somebody does what Well, that
(36:20):
person's taking a lot of things withthem that they know about you. You
know, so you you gotta gottabe proactive there and kind of figure out,
you know, how you're going tocommunicate to your kids without giving stuff
away to the cards in the restaurantwhen we coach. That's right, get
my offensive to Legio we ever coachand his play cards. Well are you
(36:42):
kids? Will they be able topick it up in a hurry? What
you what? You're changing our way? Oh yeah, we we won't change
our verbiage. We'll just change theway we communicate our verbiage. As far
as we may go to signals orrisk mans or play cards things like that,
then that that'll be a little, you know, just a little different.
But I don't believe. I don'tbelieve in confusing my kids at all.
(37:05):
So you know, we just maybe less no huddle, Yeah,
less no huddle, Yeah, becausewe don't huddle much. You know,
we try not to. Seems likeevery time we get in the huddle we're
trying to get out of it aboutten seconds on the play clock, and
I'm about ready to lose my mind, I know. But if you signaling
it in, he may know somethingright, right, right right. But
(37:27):
if you're calling him in the huddle, that's right, that'll help. So
maybe I got to be a littlequicker with the play costs. Maybe maybe
maybe you ought to tell somebody andlet them call it. Yeah, yeah,
that's he's probably easy rode in onyou. Are you normally the one
he calls the place. Yeah,I've always called place for us offensively my
whole career, and you know that'ssomething I probably always will do as as
(37:49):
a head coach. And what's Iwas looking at that this week? You
know, Auburn's Keith Freeze is havinga hard time with dad. I think
a lot of coaches have. It'sa hard time with that, and I
just don't quite get it. Youknow. I know Gus Malison came to
Auburn and he made his living callhim plays, and then all of a
sudden he gave it up. Man, you don't like that, dude,
I don't understand telling me that before. I don't understand that. I don't
understand Coach Fhre he's doing it either. You know, he's a head coach,
(38:12):
and uh, I know it's areally demanding being an sec head coach,
but uh, you know that's whomade what made you who you are.
I always believe, don't get awayfrom who you are. That's right
right back and good Sea coach coachof super teams. He texts me we're
(38:39):
alive in the text, welcome backto most barbe Jeff, don't scot are
you, okay, coach, he'sscolded. You'd not scolding you. Welcome
back to mos barbekin were sash arejust without a party going on. I
thought it's like a football team rightthere. It is the fans that they
got twenty of our gift calls.Welcome back to high school. High school
(39:06):
coach. He presented by the OrthopeteClinic on Fox Sports The Game in ninety
seven point seven Kicker FM. Coach, I'm sorry, Jeff, was routine
when you got here, but Idon't think you heard me. You are.
It's so good. He knows goodto see you, coach. So
y'all good, good good. Openweek? Last week was open? Did
(39:27):
you need a coach and your team? We did, we did. We
had we Uh we had Walter toWelburn week before and uh that was probably
the most physical game that I've everbeen a part of. And you know
it offensively, we we hung inthere with him, but we just they
were just we didn't want it.We didn't wanted that night defensively, and
we took her bruises. And yousay you didn't want it, now,
(39:49):
what do you mean? They tookit to us? So I just had
a rough night. They were theywere a lot more physical than we were.
And uh, you know we neededthis by week to get yelled up.
And uh we we had a reallygood week last week, and I
had a good week this week.Today was a good day and you know,
the weather was great. So ifa coach said they didn't have a
good day to day, I hateit for him because it was a great
(40:10):
coach. All right, so howis your team? You you kind of
we're about We're good. You gotto come in with some strong world,
Yeah I can tell yeah, yeah, we we Uh we struggled, but
we we've we bounced back. That'swhat I've been telling him a lot.
We just gotta bounce back and compete. And uh, like I said,
this week, it's been pretty solidforce. Well you know what, that's
(40:32):
what you need. Uh, coach, you want to anything, I don't
want them, you know, no, yell. I mean we we took
au we took a beat and lastFriday night or two Fridays again, so
this bye week came at a goodtime. You know, sometimes you think
you got a plan and then youget punched and it's how you respond.
And we didn't respond well, Soyou know, we used to buy a
(40:53):
week to get better focus on ourselvesand then this week, uh focus on
PCA and there you go. Uh. We we've watched a lot of film
on them, and I feel likewe've got a good game planning for them.
Guys have been they've been enthusiastic andand I, uh feel like we've
got a good plan. All right, prap Well, Christian, if you
the coach, yep, we gotit's a homecoming game. But they're a
(41:15):
good team. You know, youjust too. You're right, they're they're
a three eight team and you knowthey got it. They got a really
accurate quarterback and I talked to thecoach to day. He's been starting since
ninth grade, so h he's beenthere for quite awhile senior. They got
a they got a receiver who oneof the best route runners, uh that
I've seen on film. He's gota lot of speed and take the top
(41:36):
off of defense. So we justgot I mean, we we got a
plan in place, got to executeit. This's like I always I know
this a lot of coach speak, but I mean that's it is simple.
It is what it is, anduh, you know, offensively, I
think we'll be okay, or reallychallenge our offensive line, uh to get
better and uh to be more physical. And you know they've just spund well.
Coach Pepper does a great job withthem. And uh, you know
(41:57):
we're just we're all we're looking for. We're ready to get back on the
field. We got it. Weneed to put a good product on the
field. And uh, you knowso far, like I said, we
we've we've had a good week andwe're excited to get back on the field.
It's been too long. Yeah,we're talking to people. Bob Cats
right now, Prattable Christian this weeka non region game. Then you've got
Dave Children's Burg, Randolph County.Weird. There's your season. I said,
Now, you gotta play them all. But could you win those four
(42:20):
year in the playoffs? Yep,yeah, okay, right, I mean
you might could have afforded. Idon't know, but yeah, you can
win. Here you go. Butwe take it week by week. Yeah,
I know. But I'm just sayingyou got a lot, that's right,
I mean a lot left a wholelot later, right, said you
made some changes. Oh no,I'm said you made some defensive change.
No, we did not make it. Sorry, No, sir, we
did not. We made well youlook at sixty points or sixty three points
(42:42):
or whatever it was sixty two,you think you need a lot me It
was didn't mean no, it wasit was just more of a of an
effort thing of physicality type, youknow, deal with. Yeah, we
over we had over three hundreds rushing. Wow. Uh you know we gosh,
that's gotta take time. Well itmaybe a big run. Well we
had a couple of big plays, but now you know they didn't they didn't
(43:04):
have evolved very long. So wehad we had a lot more possessions than
uh than than normal. But yeah, I mean we we did well offensively.
We just got got like a coachsaid, you got a punch of
the mouth. And we didn't likeit. But like I said, we
had we had a bye week.We we we healed up and had a
really good week, really good dayto day and uh, we just we
just want to go play, youknow. We we's been a while.
(43:25):
Yeah, they always lose. It'salways good to have, you know what
I'm saying. Yeah, I understandhere. Somebody I think it was coach
Growder the same way. It didn'tlike being there, all right, So
I always like to get before wego. There your JV, your whichever
middle school don't know how you someskip call it middle school JV. That's
JV for us. Uh we uhwe uh we had a cancel against Loscha
(43:47):
Poka and but we we played Dayvillelast night. Uh and uh excuse me
on Monday. Yeah, we beatDave Boll and we got we got actually
have two weeks off and then we'replay Lynette kind of ship. I know
all those games imported which coaches egg. That's a check. Right. Good
to see you guys. Thank youdon't you're gonna be smiling next week.
(44:08):
All hey, look there you go. Thank y'all. All right, all
right, there you go. You'respire when you see them youngest at home.
I know that we're gonna take abreak where at mos. Jeff Bann
and I will be back continue talkingwith our coaches and a noisy patio with
Springwood when we come back. Broughtto you by the Orthor Kicker. Clay
(44:39):
Hey, welcome back to the HighSchool Coaches Show. Jeff Sasso, be
Martin Mitchell will coming to you livefrom mods original Barbecue. Brought to you
by the Orthor Pete Clinton, Modesof Original Barbecue, The Kicker ninety seven
point seven, and Fox Sports ofthe Game. We Gotta Coach Joey Burt
from Springwood School, Wildcat Country.Yeah yeah, Lynette time, No,
(45:01):
Lynette time. That's the hardest partof my job, figuring out what time
it is. I live here inCentral work in Eastern anytime we play any
kind of game, somebody's asking whattime is it on? I know,
I know, I know. Thatis awesome. I can't keep up with
myself half time all right, coach. Last week it was a lot of
points to me. I had itpulled up and that went away. They
need Southern Christian sty to seven.Yeah. Yeah, we scored about forty
(45:24):
three in the first half, andyou know, come out and did what
we wanted to do, and wewere real crisp and sharp, and they
were kind of underman their best playerand broke his leg of course the week
before, and we kind of needthat going into it. But but we
still have things we wanted to workon, and I think we accomplished what
we wanted to and then got toplay a lot of young kids there to
(45:45):
second half and had a good timewith it. So we really enjoyed coming
to Opelack and doing that. I'msure you did, a coach, And
uh, that's a that's a historicplace there. Man. It was neats
first time I've been there, reallydriven passion of time or two just kind
of stumbled across it and halfway lost, and yeah, it was neat to
play there in a beautiful neighborhood. All the store it this. We thought
(46:07):
we were gonna lose a couple ofballs, kick, coach, I was
gonna ask you that. So Idon't know how you got North End zone,
but I don't know how you foundit. We kicked it there,
yeah, I think that was inwe did. We were gonna kick it
on you. Yeah, I waslike, that's all the balls was too
expensive for old coach. That's awesome, But look you played it a that
was up like a highest first.Somebody had told me that way, way,
(46:27):
way a long time ago. Hedidn't play there, and I didn't.
I didn't. I wasn't there.I watched. I watched, yeah
when I was younger, but Imean it was like young young. Yeah.
Yeah, but it's a nice, nice little venue for us. Yeah,
yeah, all right, that's justweek coach. Hold on I had
a team who we got Coach,I didn't lost one. Note. We
are going to play a half aroundPinson and Antyana area. They're a big
(46:49):
homeschool. I've been doing it aquitt of why I do a good job
with it. They'll they'll roll thirtyfive forty kids out there, and they
had a big game last week withthe evange Or of Alabaster, and they're
the two kind of big dogs inthat league. So it'll be a great
game for us, a good measuringstick just to see how far we've came
along in the two years we've beenplaying that. I think last year they
(47:10):
beat just by about six, andyou know, just kind of went back
and forth. So we're looking forwardto traveling up there this weekend having a
good game. Coach, what's beena big difference for your program getting all
this you know kind of quick turnaroundand winning games. I'm being I just
I just think stability. You know, that's a good point. Uh,
you know, we've had so muchturnover, but I think that's the key.
(47:31):
And just you know, we ain'tdoing anything special, just doing the
right thing, you know, caringabout the kids and parents and treating them
right and working them hard and holdingthem to a high standard. And you
know that ain't I guess it's hardfor some people to do, but it's
the way I've always kind of doneit. And you know what, I
think that's the key. I can'ttell because you mean what you say.
(47:52):
I think that's another thing. Youknow what I mean, you're following truth.
Oh yeah, you gotta love themif you don't love what you're doing
it. Like I said, I'vebeen retired and that's what I want to
do. So you've been a coacha long time, posting both both sides,
hsa na say. And you firstgot hired in our first interview,
you laid a plan out and youtalked about the youth and you're you're checking
the boxes coach. All right, well too, yeah, yeah, all
(48:14):
right, let's let's let's your team. Give me some guys that's been I
love to get these kids. Namewell, are running back had another great
night? Huh? Hi? Wethrew our quarterback did a great job blue
cuts and I think he threw forthree hundred and eighty yards about six touchdowns.
Now, my stat man, hecounts shuffle passes, its passes.
I kind him as a run,but they are a pass, they are
(48:35):
passed. Yeah, So two ofthose long touchdowns with c. J.
Johnson. He had a couple ofbig plays on our shuffle play and got
marking up his passion. He isright there at a thousand yards rushing in
our six games right now, andand a lot of those are just playing
a half. So he's done agreat job for us. His brothers Greg's
tied in. He caught a touchdownand had a couple of sacks. On
(48:57):
defense, He's a big, big, strong it plays defensive end force as
well our other wide out. Wewanted to get him in Bob more this
week and get his confidence up.Eli Johnson had a great game. He
had uh several catches, he hadright out a hundred yards and a couple
of touchdowns and made some big plays. So I think that helped him build
his confidence up because he had beenstruggling a little bit this year where everybody
else had been getting a lot ofplaying time. So well, he got
(49:22):
the shuffle pass with the touchdowns werethere any contact and he just wide opened
the whole up. The defensive endwas getting far up the field, you
know, and took the quarterback andhe flipped it underneath and we had it
sealed off. He had to makea duke or two on a on a
free safety coming up. And he'sgetting a lot better with moving. He
in played running back a whole lot. He was a defensive guy when he
(49:43):
was at Opelaca and played youth ball. That's what I asked him. I
said, you played here before.Did you score? And he touched out.
He said, they didn't let merun the ball. I let him
run the ball. I was thinkingabout yards after contact. Yeah, it
sounds like they weren't a lot ofcontact, uh uh. And they played
us tough, and coming out thesecond half, we wanted to put our
big guys. We kind of learnedto lessen with the metal view that we
(50:06):
kind of let up real early anddidn't want to kind of embarrass him or
anything. But we didn't get towork. We needed to get done,
you know, And it was kindof like having an off week because they
only played about a half a quarterand but we kind of decided after that
we needed to work on us,and we tried to take care of the
other people. But we had somethings we wanted to accomplish, and one
was setting some drives together, somelong drives. So we had stripped some
(50:28):
drives that we wanted to do andand they were runs up the middle and
things where they would be some contactand some physicality that we needed to see,
you know, to help us inthe future. So so there were
several of those. And and he'scoming a long way as far as you
know, rotating and dipping in andsidestepping and taking some of those shots and
being able to move on. Youknow, Coach, that's one bad thing
(50:49):
when you beat somebody and you haveto start that Clark runner, you don't
get to play that we were talkingabout, Coach d You don't get to
play those young kids. Yeah, yeah, you know, you're you know,
the substitute. And well we've donea good job. You know.
We played several JV games this year. Yeah you tell we've got three more
left, so they're getting a lotof time and those kids are coming along
and I really enjoyed doing that andget to see them development. You know
what. I appreciate your commitment toour show too, Coach. I appreciate
(51:12):
it. Yeah, thank you, thank you for all y'all. Good job.
We'll see you enjoying it. Yeah, good luck. That's Joey Birch
Springwood Wildcats here at the Coaches Showat MOS presented by the Orthopedy Clinic,
the Polka Indians, Rico Newton. When we come back, thank you.
(51:42):
We are back at Most Barbecue.Good evening until you We're here every Wednesday
night. Jeff Sasser d Mark VanJason in sixteen to eighteen of our favorite
high school coaches right here at MostBarbecue. High Schools Coaches are the longest
running our School Coaches Show in EastAlabama on The Kicker and Fox Sports the
Game. We appreciate the Pete Clinicwere what they do, uh sponsoring the
(52:04):
show. We appreciate Most Barbecue fortaking care of these coaches. They eat
a lot of meals out here, and uh we're glad to have them uh
in the house. And one ofthose is coachree Co Newton with the Polka
Indians. And sure, how youdoing a good coach? There's only one
way, and it's the Polka way. The Polka way. That's what I'm
talking about. Uh, congrats onwinning Highway fourteen, coach. Uh.
(52:24):
The Battle of Highway and fourteen. It was about it, and it's a
lot about it. It was agreat defensive game. Came down to the
end. We end up putting offTwitter six. Though. It was a
great game. Yeah, it was. Tell us a litle bit about your
faults, and the thing was isit was a great game, you know,
a great rival game. Uh.My offense scored well. First,
(52:45):
Notic Circle scored on the kickoff returnitythey used were the first one to sport
it's going to kickoff return. Thenwe came back and we scored. Then
it went back and forth for along time, and then the third quarter
we scored again and end up beinga bit defensive game. And they got
the ball to it last end andof it. Then my defense stood up
and lay the great ball and theywas the ball back down in the game
and they had it like close tothe thirty yes, thirty right, thirty,
y'all help it would stop him rightthere, I think, right,
(53:07):
yes, sir? Yeah, wellall right, you got that you're undefeated,
Yes, sir, you're rolling thewrong how you feel? I mean,
there's a thing we need to do. This, we need to Uh,
that's a lot of stuff we gottawork on. We got a chance
to get a buy this week,so we tried to work on a lot
of stuff and still trying to youknow, keep those your kids doing rehab
and you know, just doing littlethings. You know, just I'm trying
to get better each and every day. So you just work home Lotrivoca this
(53:29):
week. Yes, I'm just workingon Lotopocla. Didn't get ready for uh,
Kahoun nex week. Calhoun. It'sa region game. It's a region
game. Yep, Calhoun. Thenatography of them. Here's Calhoun. Kahoun
is located in Lowlee County, isright outside of sell them, okay,
hope before we get to sell them, all right, I've I've I've never
I've heard Calhoun. Just didn't knowwhere it was. That was a school
(53:50):
in one of these schedules that I'venever heard of. Yeah, we had
that. I remember that school too. Leads to Hatchie Jeff lead a hatchet
a hatchet need it had need tohatch don't you when you go he goes
down trip, I mean, excuseme. How about your young SHOs?
How are they doing? They're doinggood, They're doing good. Got a
couple of young guys playing uh gotit lying back by name of Jabon Gary.
(54:15):
He's doing a great job. Imean, he's in the tenth grade.
Got some young guys kind of steppingup, though, what's the youngest
you got playing on the tell youtip got two eighth graders and the two
eighth graders they're they're playing a special, little special team. Think about those
eighth grade They showed up the wholesummer. They didn't miss a day doing
the summer. Don't workout, sowe kind of told him just keep hanging
around. We'll find something for youto do. Yeah, you know what
(54:35):
they playing on Friday night? Yeah, Yeah, that's the reward for all
the hard work graders. Exactly. That's it, all right. I mean,
it's just kept the the temps. You know, it's a beautiful night
tonight. That's that's helping you.Yes, it's helping us a lot,
even at practice to day, youknow, compared to what we were talking
about. Maybe he's a month agoor so, it's been a month.
It ain't been. You've only gotteen going both ways, Yeah, exactly,
(54:55):
exact only team. Yeah, onlyten. He got one. He
got one, and they got going. Ain't going, by the way,
he doesn't. He just mastered theone I got dress awesome, that's awesome.
Well, you know, well,I ain't gonna say this this week
first, you know, but yourteam's you're you're really you feel good about
your team. Go, I feelgood about my team, but I'm trying
(55:20):
to make sure they stay humble.Yeah I know. The thing ugg is
you've been here before too. Yeah, I've been here before. And the
thing is, you know, yougot so much outside stuff and outside people.
You know, people feel your headup, tell you this and you
that, and then you know, you get to hearing that stuff. So
my main thing been in them isjust hey that just focus on us.
That's focused on us this week, that's continued to work hard in the weight
room. A team attack the weightroom do. It's what do in the
(55:42):
weight room do, It's what goingto clariss room, and that's make sure
we have good days in practice. That's the main thing. Just stay humble.
When you got this week up,the what is this team like?
Look? Uh? Plot level ups? No, you're opening this week got
humb open? He s they playedplot my bad lay yea. So this
week being open, have you restedyour kids well to some point? But
(56:05):
the thing is, I've noticed throughthe years, if you make it seem
like rest that they don't we allto come out real rested next week.
So we tried to emphasize that it'snot rest that we're still going, but
kind of like in our own way, we kind of rested them a little
bit, you know what I'm saying. But it wasn't their legs. I'm
emphasizing that, hey, we gotthis week off and they're gonna be about
rest because they come back next weekand forget about attacking all this stuff.
So we still to do some tempotype stop there you go. If you
(56:30):
had to write and percentage of whatyou're practicing them, of course, she's
a right, I say, weabout seventy percent, all right, you
know, you know I that's whatI would I would think you don't want
to get too far out of fullcontact. But no, not too far
out, but you don't want itto be like uh him, like screen
(56:52):
practice. Don't want to make screenpractice. That's Raco Newton. Good to
see. Thank you, sir,Thank y'all so much for that. Y'all
appreciate you. Covi, Raco newand the polk Indians. They're open this
week, they're undefeated. We'll comeback La Mitch in the house at Most
Barbecue House. You coach, welcomeback to Most Market. There's something always
(57:37):
going on here with these coaches. You get eighteen head coaches in here,
and you gotta mess, you knowwhat I mean. I love these guys.
We're on the patio at Most Barbecueon a beautiful evening. Especially course
Jonathan, I know he's a trip. He's a trip man. It is
it iss put me up well, boodio on or whatever you call it.
I'm not a hoodie, but long. It's not as cold here, y'all.
Never been in our studio where it'slike sixty five. Cooper if his
(58:02):
he said he'd mart now I knowhow cold he yeah, he knows my
press box. We keep the coldon. We don't raise windows either,
do we coach, No, wedon't raise no windows and windows. What
we're gonna pull him in winds down? All right, let's talk. Let's
get off to the air and thenCoop, but we're glad to be.
Let's talking that football. Tough, tough week last week wasn't yeah, tell
(58:25):
me now, the week four wasthe flying squadron on. That's right.
Then Louvern Louverne and now you're gonnaget you some hand handed and that's something
you know, Coach Story said. You know, Coach Story said, the
schedule said, I'm gonna be outof here, and yet he made that
schedu. Yeah, you know, amens amen corner. You know who made
(58:45):
that schedu. Well, you know, to him, you don't have any
choice, right, absolutely, absolutely, Yeah, tough week. You know,
kids came out, play hard firsthalf. You know, we were
up, we were up sixty three, dominating time possession. I think we
held the ball for what kids probablyseventeen minutes of the twenty four Yeah,
I mean it was just total domination. Got down the red zone right there
(59:07):
at the end of the half, fourth and one, no time outs,
just had a strength, couldn't keepit, you know, moving and uh,
the events played great and then wejust came out. I ain't gonna
say we came out flat, butyou know it kind of it was a
little different tone. I think thekids relaxed just a hair too much at
the start. It's one of themgames, you know, and you're good
(59:29):
first half. You hate to gointo half time for the twenty minutes.
Yeah, I I My vote isjust down the sideline course, just keep
it in the kid walking around andkeep that momentum on our side, because
we came out, like I said, they got the ball and they went
they just went to do what theydid and went straight down the field and
score went up ten to six, yes, eighteen six or the final yeah,
ten six, and then scoring onethere again, I don't know about
(59:49):
what seven eight minutes left. Iprobably yea or two. But prior to
that, like I said, wehad multiple times and score. It's just
capitalizing on the things you need tocapitalize on. At the end of the
day, all right, we're gonput that behind us, Handley and going
forward. All right. So thisis oh I'm lost him here, all
right. This is of course anon REGI game, but a game that
y'all have gotten a little very historicgame. Yeah, y'all the all time
(01:00:10):
twenty five, forty two and fourhandling one last year. Talk about playing
Hanley at Hanley. Yeah, coachtrying got a great football team like always.
Uh, you know, this isa big rivalry for us and our
kids. I think our kids takethis game pretty serious, you know.
You know, you always hear aboutValley and Hanley or not Valley. I'm
sorry Withnette Hanley, but you know, Valley as well as a rivalry.
(01:00:34):
But our kids tend to but ourkids tend to take this one serious.
Now, Like you know, kidscould probably you know, say the same
thing for basketball or whatever we're doing. It don't matter what we're playing.
If it's handley, it's an extralevel of front, you know, you
know, for us. So butyeah, I think, oh got a
big football team over there, anduh, they play hard. This is
the back end of our what we'recalling our amen corner here, So you
(01:00:58):
know, I wish we could doit back. We did in two.
I was fifteen when I was there. We were struggling, were pushed b
ratings pretty good. We're going througha little struggle that we are now.
Two games were the street. CoachWashington came to practice all week. I
remember that Monday two in Any cameof the game on Friday, so I'm
not going to Central Phoenix City andOpelaca came there and we we shocked him.
And I wish we could get thatback because I said, don't think
(01:01:19):
coach ever lost a handle, ifI'm not mistaken. I remember coming in
dad, my dad played for coach. They used to talk. He talked
about that all the time. Howhandy was the game? Like, Yeah,
they treated that game like him andBen Russell super Bowl. It's kind
of exea cy. That's interesting, but I wish we could have that.
(01:01:40):
But either way, we're all upthere and just one of the guys who
continue to play hard and keep gettingbetter. They still got a hold on
the half a season to go.Absolutely, what do you see in Handley?
What do they do to do it? Make a lot up hit us
in the mountain. This thing Ican tell you, I mean last week
watching them go play is absolutely thatwas some good fun football, you know,
like old school what you dream of, but you know, really athletic,
(01:02:05):
big, very old, like that'san old football team. I hate
to say it like that, butthese guys that are playing for him have
played a lot. I'm footing ball. These kids have started on I think
when they last time they want it, I think they were freshmen starting,
yes, like playing and uh sonow they're singers and they were just real
dynamic. They they play hard. What kind of offense does coach team?
(01:02:30):
What does what is running at?Does he mix it up pretty good?
Kind of sort of yeah, tootight little uh little wing back type stuff
just on a lot of like Isaid, power, I call it power
of sweeps. Yeah, tight endwing and we tossed into the right on
the right, we're tssing right,We're going on power up. We're getting
we're going downhill with it down hill. Well, so you pretty much know
(01:02:51):
what he's gonna do, yea, yeah, yeah, But they play a
lot of guys both ways, likea lot. But I think they played
like seventeen or eighteen guys both waysout there. But he's rotating a lot
of d linement, which is keepinga lot of those linement fresh and letting
him keep rolling. Yeah, wejust gotta play horror man. Yeah,
this one thing with our kids.We keep playing hard, getting better every
week, and it's eventually gonna startto roll. Ou just gotta have that
mentality and if you go in therehalfway defeated, then you're just doing yourself
(01:03:15):
with disservice and we just gotta keeppressing. You know, Thank you all
for keep coming. Appreciate you havingpresent wrestling that book. You're gonna be
right back at modes with David secondone. He also watched Suzuki backing.
I swear we got something feeding inon on our Show. Welcome back to
(01:03:36):
Mother's Barbecue. High School Coachy Showcontinues, presented to you by the Orthopedic
Clinic. And we're on the asI call Baranda the patio at Modes.
It's a noisy night. We gota rowdy crowd out of here. Rowdy,
isn't it rawy? Yeah it is. We got a packed house and
we got some were having a goodtime, having a good time. Coach,
Roger McDonald, good to see,Good to see you. Every time
(01:03:57):
I see your logo, I thinkof the pack. It's cold to me.
I mean the Green Bay pack.It is, but I know it's
a D and that's black and goldand it's faded. Made it look right
ring And that's what I was gonnasay. Every time I look at like
a cheap chain from water, leavethat green thing around. Oh, coach,
(01:04:17):
you're awesome. Oh we were talkingabout your last week's game. Oh
man, it was Walter World. No, it was a battle loss,
the tough loss. But you knowI told the kids after the game,
I said, the reason you're hurtingso bad, you're crying. You got
so much emotion because McCard, youplayed in such a hard fought game and
left it all out there. Thosegames, those games they hurt you.
(01:04:42):
Uh. We scored first, madeit six to nothing, had a chance
to score right for a half.Uh, couldn't get it in, had
it on bout to six yard line, and came out. They scored,
tied it up in second half, made it six six. We went back
and scored, missed ex going uptwelve to six. Uh. They scored
with about six minutes to go inthe game, went for two. Uh,
(01:05:03):
then they were up. Then we'reback and forth a couple of times.
Punted. They drove it down therethe last five minutes and scored at
the end of the game, rightthere, with about a minute and five
seconds to go. Uh. Youknow, they had two hundred and fifty
two yards offense. They were overthree passing. We had about two I
(01:05:25):
think two hundred and nine yards offense. We were five for nine passing.
Neither team had to turn over. Both teams funded about five or six.
It was a physical slug fest.Uh. Two good football teams battle right
down to the wire, same aswe did up there last year. Uh.
Probably the difference last year up therewas my two wide outs. They
couldn't account for them, and uh, you know he has a lot of
(01:05:48):
seniors that were back on his offenseand defensive line. But you know,
I told our kids after the game, we're we're better tonight, even in
a loss than we were a weekcould go because you hadn't been hit in
the mouth and we were in aslug fest. And and our kids followed
them tooth and nail. I said, we were heading to six minutes go
(01:06:09):
in the game and had two chancesto get him off the field. On
that drive. I had him thirdand eight one time, and I think
thirty seven they picked up a first, and uh, you know, I
was proud of the way we played. And if we'll continue to play like
that and get better, you know, we'll be all right. We got
buell Of week after next h Forall practical purposes, it's for us to
get in the playoffs. Yeah, you know, if we beat them.
(01:06:30):
Realistically, we're in the playoffs asthree and one, and in our region,
that's gonna put you in now thatain't You know? You want to
keep playing for seating. But youknow, going into this thing, if
I'd known going into the buell Ofgame that win would put us in the
playoffs, you know we would havetaken that when you as young as we
are. You know, we didn'tknow, you know, we didn't know
(01:06:53):
going in and you would play seventeenseniors how we were gonna be. So
we had an off week getting readyfor bull a little bit. We went
out, We worked out on Monday, gonna work out Friday, being in
shelves Tuesday, Wednesday and tomorrow andthe then next week you know, be
a regular practice week. But thisbig game, my kids understand. You
win, you're gonna be in andthat's your that's your main goal. Get
(01:07:15):
in the playoffs because after that anythingcan happen. That's rights. And uh,
the first half was over Friday nightat uh ten minutes till eight good
gracious fifteen minutes fifty minutes. Unbelievable. And I'm when I tell you probably
didn't nobody else in state play theway US and Walter Wethern play side Wednesday.
It was what time y'all finished? Now? It shoot, I think
(01:07:38):
everybody was gone by nine to thirty, how about that? But it real
and I'm telling you it was twophysical football games. You're physical team probably
needed an open week. Yeah, but you know the thing back we didn't
come out beat up. I talkedCoach Smith and he didn't have anybody beat
up. I mean it was man. They were both who who found in
nature ten minutes? Do you likeopen weeks in the middle season? You
(01:07:59):
know, we really wasn't supposed tobe open. He got to be playing
because coach said, you know,he just didn't feel like they could compete
with us right now. They're soyoung and it we're fine, and you
know, we reached a financial agreementbased on the gate at their place last
year. So I would rather beplaying because we have our real week open
week seven. But it kind ofworked out because we got to beat Beutle
(01:08:24):
of getting the playoffs and then wehave a week open and then we beat
Childersburg to move up in seatings,so you know, it worked out.
We'll take it to where it istwo next to pay two teams, two
weeks to prayer of two teams,so the rest of you'll not go after
a game like that, I meanit was a close game, uh that
you lost, and you're you're you'rethrough at nine thirty, get everything,
(01:08:44):
put up, turn off the lightsand go to the house and listen to
the radio shows. I just wanted, way do you do you do?
You get uh worked up after somegames more so than others. I've never
been able to sleep good after anygame, and not like because being upset
or happy or not fix your Yeahdid adrenaline. That was that way when
we broadcast. I've never been ableto sleep. I go to sleep,
(01:09:06):
I think I dream it all nightlong, and the Saturday night can't keep
you y. And then Saturday andwhen I watch all the ball games during
day, I'm dying. And thenI'm not doing right and getting up going
to church on Sunday. You know, I'm laying up instead of doing that
and getting ready to watch film andall that stuff. So but hey,
we were proud as I could beof our kids, I mean school,
and I tell you they played.I mean, you know there are times
(01:09:29):
when you lose. You can't pointyour finger and say, hey we turned
it over, we had penalties. We played, but you didn't do that
a lot of time. It's justone of them where you didn't win the
other team. Wont you know whatlike that? My father said, they
practiced every day two Sunday. Yeah, they practiced. Get the playoffs.
You might get another crackhead and andthey were oial coached. And it's just
where you go and we are too. It was a good football game.
(01:09:53):
I mean, and look like yourattitude. You have thought you were playing
high school football in the nineteen eightyI love it. Kind of like the
Tide Saturday. It was high schoolfootball. Coach made a good seas,
thank y'all. A little man ata little man he uh, he went
to church night. They had youthat church to night. Stay was going
to a boy. All right,we'll be back Lafette on deck when the
ice Get Coaches have presented by theOrna Fitty Clinic in mose Barn. Hey,
(01:10:25):
welcome back to the High School CoachesShow. We'll coming to you live
from Mole's original Barbecu was brought toyou by the Orthopedy Clinic, Moles the
Kicker ninety seven point seven and FoxSports The Game. You listen to us
on nine ten or thirteen ten.I guess when you're here, coach,
you'll be thirteen ten. You lookedto us to us some nineteen nineteen years.
Okay, all right, we're good, all right, thank you.
Hey, we got coach one Williamsfrom Lafaett High Schools. Last week,
(01:10:48):
you had to make a long trip, coach with goach that then how long
the trip is that it took usabout two and a half. I'll say,
yeah, you sit two and ahalf to three. Coach Thornton's there
two you said at tune there yougo. Uh, yeah, you lost
the game thirty four or nothing.Uh, you don't talk briefly about that.
Y'a off this week and we'll talkwhat you what's your plans offer?
(01:11:10):
Uh, what you've been doing thisweek, and then we'll go into your
next apartments that Okay, yes, sir, our offensive line didn't show on
the scoreboard. Our offensive line wehad what three or four drives of sixty
and seventy yards and didn't come upwith nothing in the end, had a
fumble, a drop touchdown uh,and another fumble. Uh. Three drives,
(01:11:33):
so I you know, defensive wives, we didn't play well. Uh.
We gotta tackle better. That's whatwe've been working on this week.
If we take anything good from thegame is our offensive line really just blocked
their butts off of the first timein a long time. They really are
jelling right now and they they aredoing well for what we're trying to do
(01:11:54):
with things that are coming up.So Ghoshen has a great back who got
he's already committed to South Alabama andhe is, uh, he is that
guy. You know, That's somethingthat we knew going in that we would
have to tackle me, which Idon't know that there's a tougher to a
region in the state. You needthe one you're playing. I mean,
(01:12:17):
you know, this is this isthe region for people who aren't aware that.
You got Barbara County, all right, you know, they they've had
they've had their tough look, allright, then you got Goshen, Higland,
Holme, Beforce, you being Lafette, Lenette, Luverne, real Town,
Real Town four four right three undefeated, you got uh, you got
(01:12:41):
you got three undefeated in the regionand undefeated overall. They just hadn't played
each other. Yeah, it's gonnasomebody's gonna have a loss. Yeah.
And then we even with even withGhost there are two losses are too.
I looked at that, That's whatI was looking at. Everybody's kind of
the losses or the other teams. So, I mean, you know,
and it is what it is.Uh, you gotta play. We understand
(01:13:05):
what situation we're in, been inthis last year and a half. So
but we'll get back to where itwhere it needs to be. Uh.
We still just got these young guysand they're learning, and we know we're
gonna get two years with a bunchof sophomores that that are really learning right
now. And we're we're proud ofthem what they're doing against the competition,
(01:13:26):
what they're doing right now with everythingis went on with us, So we
don't we don't make no excuses.Uh, We're gonna try to get better
every week, keep working hard, practice a little harder than we did the
day before, and just keep gettingbetter at it. What are you doing
this week? Coach? Practicing hard? You know? And the best thing,
all the thing we know to dois just keep trying to work harder.
It's something to get better at it. And that's what we're gonna do
(01:13:49):
every day. Uh. We wedon't practice all we well, we let
him off, Monday went yesterday,we went to day we go again tomorrow.
Having some good practice is just gettingkids to understand the game. Every
day, every days you can andmake kids understand the game. It's something
that we're trying to do here inthe fair. Now, I let the
(01:14:10):
coach chime in, yea, hedid a great job. He did,
but just the pick it back offwhat coach said. I'm so proud of
the offensive defensive line. A lotof those guys played both ways, and
uh, we we definitely got betterthis week on the back end. Of
course, we do still have workto do, but I'm proud that we
(01:14:30):
we were able to make some strides. You know, we're starting to jail.
It's coming, you know. Wejust have to be patient as coaches
and continue to teach the kids whatthey need to know, continue to work
hard, and uh, eventually, hopefully we'll get it, get it on
the right track. You the openweek coach? You like Open week coach?
(01:14:51):
I do. Yeah, we neededit. We needed the week to
sit down and everybody get their thoughtstogether. When when things don't aren't going
right. That's what even the coachesand the players, you know, your
second guess and you're sitting down,we know what what can go right,
what can go wrong? What arewe doing wrong? So you get to
sit down and really look at alot of things as coaches that you know,
(01:15:15):
because you can always get better atsomething. So that's all we're doing
is sitting back and we're gonna makea couple of change that we've been seeing
the last four or five games,Like, okay, we need to make
some changes here now U in themid season right now, so we hope
that will help us out a littlemore on the on the downside, Now,
you all are you all healthy?Coach? That's well, Donna say,
you gotta get there, Coach,I don't know what you've had health
(01:15:36):
all year? Heavy hundred percent?Have you? Uh no, sir,
no, sir, but we knowwe we played what we got. You
didn't. Yeah, all right,we're gonna push through. There you go,
there you go. Good to seeyou one. Appreciate coach, don't
see see guys. Thank y'all goappreciate what y'all do for us. All
right. That's Lafette. They're inthe house. We've had David Lafette and
a whole lot more. Boyguard RussellCounty open like a Benja Russell. We
(01:15:59):
got a bun should come your wayyet. Mose Barbecue High School Coaches Show
presented by the Orthopede Cleman continue passesit down. Welcome back to most barbecue
fan that's doing it. Hey,we like it. I didn't appreciate that
(01:16:24):
he didn't even phase. Even Iappreciate the intro, it didn't phaze.
You can't go. We'd like towelcome you back. Yes, this is
the most exciting seven minutes of theCoaches Show. It's Borguard football time.
Thank you to the orthopeued that clinic, Fox Sports, the game, Mose
(01:16:45):
Barbecue which I had the wings tonight. So what's sessions were on? Sir?
You're on Fox and oh yeah, and we're on Fox and we're on
The Kicker. I'd be w WW K k R and it's ninety seven
seventh that would be Lee Counties, which best country? When right, look
where you can hear you can gofrom you can go from Tammy Winnett to
(01:17:09):
Morgan Waller, all in the samethirty minutes only own the Kicker, Dag
and then oh man, we appreciatethat. The music intro became planning that
for you first time for you.Oh there was a tax there was a
text earlier today, Oh that whatsay? That would have got me on
(01:17:30):
a whole lot earlier. We hadto be the back half of the show.
But I failed, we failed, failed to remember. So now I
agree with you, all right,I'll tell you what something else I learned
to not tell it so is thatI don't want to hear this, mister
Sasster, you still with us tonight, all right? So something that I
did not put two and two together, because this is some of the Borreguard
(01:17:51):
faithful, the Sin family, who'sa mighty big family out there in Boegard,
that mister Sassor and the Sin familyhave some ties. They're they're crossed,
they crossed, and the family didnot know that, did not put
that together to the night. Sothey shout out to mister Kenny Sin and
uh, his bunch so got tosee his daughter and son in law,
(01:18:11):
and well you got to see thebest part of them, he solved.
That's right, that's okay. Andand you must be talking about your son,
no, he said, I'm justgiving him hard time, right,
coach, Well, you worked witha mom and she works. I guess
behind is it behind you was wherethe elementary school is, behind the high
school. It's it's just kind ofyeah, sort of yeah, kind of
(01:18:32):
down the road right there. Imean it's really kind of rocks throw yeah,
from from the field house. Allright, A good Rocks throw.
But you warned me last week CharlesAnderson was good and they were, wasn't
they They were good, good footballteam. So we had we had two
top teams, two top ten teamsshow up, only one or playing one
top one of the top ten showedup. So yeah, but yeah it
(01:18:53):
I mean, hey, hats offto coach Hambright, those guys man,
that do a tremendous job. Wejust we struggled up front a little bit
on both sides of the football. And I was hand Bright been there,
uh, I think as long asI've been the past three years. I
think maybe maybe maybe a year beforeI came to Borguard, But he's been
there a few years? Is threethree? Okay? All right? I
(01:19:15):
wasn't sure I knew that. Thelast one I remember was Mike uh Dan
Dan and so I didn't know.I didn't know how long he had been
there. But obviously you got agood product, right, oh man.
I mean they are now coached well, play hard, you know, so
what the game you can say.I hadn't heard anything about the game.
(01:19:36):
We hadn't talked to you, Ihadn't gotten much details we ain't trying to
be no, I just you know, that's all we're talking about. I
mean it was so unexpected. Imean I didn't I didn't say that like
that, and I don't mean thatas a shot better than that. Hey,
coach, look, I know whatwe're talking about. I take it
(01:19:56):
as a compliment, compliment that that'sthat was I was expected. I get
it, all right, get soI'll take you. I'll take it that
way to beat them last year, right, we did, and the last
year ye so. But yes,we struggled up front with their now given
now, they got lots of starson their defensive line. You know,
(01:20:18):
they got the five star the toprated on one side and the other kid
on the other side is not farbehind him. But we just you know,
struggled on struggled, you know, blocking those guys up front, and
then shot ourselves, put ourselves ina bad position a couple of times.
I had a couple of you know, how to turn over that put us
on. Put them in a shortfield, and just like saying, no
(01:20:39):
different than playing us. If yougive us a short field, we're gonna
find a way to put points onthe board. They're good football team that
does the same thing. So kindof fell behind a couple of scores early
and just you know, we're lastyear we kind of battled our way back
into it. This year we couldnever kind of get in the rhythm,
all right, So this week neededyou're glad you're in the situation you're in
this week's or is you know, not having enough? Oh? Just man,
(01:21:02):
I really enjoy having the bye week. Really in week five, really
we were able to do that ata at a previous school I was at
before, and it was just youknow, I think even coach Saban has
said something about after so many weeks, it's good to give your kids,
you know, some like you know, they just not have the I would
(01:21:25):
call it like a almost the stressorof a of a game week. So
and we read with this week hadreally really good practices. I feel like
this week and just as we talkedtold our kids, let's get back to
the main thing, and the mainthing is us being better at who we
are. How did you how didyou How have you practiced so far this
week? I mean, has itbeen like like a normal practice or has
(01:21:46):
it been lighter or is it andit ain't been lighter? Okay, uh
so. Uh, but I meanyou're talking about board our kids. They
they respond like they I mean, you know, we've we been probably we've
been more full padded days this weekthan we would normally be in a game
week. And they they've they've enjoyedit, they've loved it. So do
(01:22:08):
you do you throw any do youwork on your next opponent in two weeks
out like this or in without?Yes, I mean, if there's any
kids listening to them, but alot, coach, we ain't done that,
but in a way we have.We have, and they just don't
know you done. They just don'tknow we've done yes. So tomorrow they
will know that we're doing it tomorrowbecause we're gonna make it obvious to them.
But even earlier in this week,we've kind of thrown some bits and
(01:22:30):
pieces of silicaga to them. Coach, I've you know, I've heard coaches
say before, uh in here onthis show that you know it's a game
that you know, you the theopponent of somebody that they should beat and
we'll beat. It's gonna be noteasy. I'm not saying this a easy
game, but it's somebody that youabsolutely should beat and they'll throw win.
(01:22:50):
Uh two weeks down the road, you got a central and uh, they
may throw in a little bit ofthe central stuff in that week. The
preparation week kind of just yeah,we ain't ready for that. We needed
to make sure that we prepare forSilicoga, you know, and because that's
the next that that's the big one, because that's the next one. If
(01:23:12):
that makes sense. I have been, you know, as a coach that
we know there was a team uhwhen I was a problem. Enterprise ran
the single wing type stuff, Sothere was time. Is that music out
here already? Man? Turn thatdown? Good? Not so? No,
I don't need to other. CoachWallace ain't even been able to talk
about we got there in a wholelot. I can talk about that.
(01:23:36):
Let's leave it like that. Butwhen you got a zero, we used
to work on the single wing likea certain period every week before we played
Enterprise, just to make it becauseit was so different, you know.
So, Coach Van, it's reallygood. Tomorrow, man, hollot me
tomorrow the Coach Show. We'll beright. We roll along. Both Barbecue
(01:24:18):
High School Coaches Show continues on TheKicker and Fox Sports nine thirteen in the
game on the marking morning six o'clockto nine. Week days. Ve Mark
here, Jeffrey Kritterbi on the markwith us. He's here, n Riggs,
Jason Lee, Summer in the house. We're gone. They're watching all
kinds of stuff in here. Timeto talk. Russell County footballer coach Stilling
(01:24:38):
Griggs. Good evening, coach, good evening. How are you doing to
day man? How are you doing? I'm happy. I'm happy. If
I can't get a W this Friday, i'd be even happy. I know
that. I know. W's doa lot for a lot of coaches.
It does, done it, Yeah, it does. It's better than anything
you probably have this time of theyear right now. That's right. Yeah,
Well it's good to see you andyour family over there. All right.
So it was a tough week thisweek. We tunk on the road
(01:25:00):
fifty two thirty seven. Coach, tell me about it just a little bit.
You know. We we we actuallyin the game, out gained them
offensively by like four seventy five,I think three forty eight. Oh my
goodness. At one point we wehad in you know, listen, guys,
we're starting ten sophomores right now.You know, we've we've lost three
games by combined twenty two points. You know, we're we've only got about
(01:25:21):
five seniors playing right now, youknow. You you know, in the
game, we got down twenty oneto nothing and uh scored twelve points right
before the halftime. We're down toour third string kicker due to injuries,
and you know, came back outin the third quarters, scored twenty four
points in the third quarter, gotwithin thirty eight thirty six, scored a
(01:25:42):
touchdown in the fourth on a quickgame and they said a legal man down
field and it just kind of poppedthe bubble at that point and they ended
up pulling away late and just kindof kind of you know, in kudos
to Bear. You know, theyplayed four quarters. We played we played
about two and a half and soyou know, we've got the figure out
how to play a full game. And it's the same thing with stand Hope
in Harris County. You know,we we put together two quarters in both
(01:26:04):
games, and you know, we'vegot to figure out how to be a
four quarter team. And we're closerthan ever. But uh, you know,
Rome wasn't built in a day,and you know, as long as
our kids keep doing what they're doing. I'm really excited about the future at
three and one Valley this week.Excuse me, you host him? I
did it. I'm started. Valleycomes to your place. It's a good
(01:26:25):
football team, it is. Tellme what you think about him. Uh,
you know, athletic quarterback and inthe corner. Uh. You know
number two really jumps out at me. You know that. And you know,
and and Adam does a good job. You know. The defense is
very physical, and you know they'reblitz heavy and they send a lot of
pressure. And you know, thosekids are very gaps and they're good at
what they do. That's the onething we know is Sunday, you know,
(01:26:46):
I mean type of defense he runs. You know, you've got to
make plays. And then you know, offensively, you've got to control that
quarterback. If you can control thequarterback, you get a chance. I
mean, he's a special kid,you know, and deservedly so every offer,
every offer he has. You cansee it when you watch him play,
you know. But you know,uh, Us and Valley are kind
of one and one against each otherin the last two years, and and
(01:27:06):
you know last year, I thinkwe lost by about three points twenty three.
Yeah, we had three turnovers thatgame. One was on the goal
line, and so you know,I think we're just excited to get back
out there and see what happens. He's four quarters. Yeah, I like
your additive with your team that youknow you have been close. What will
it take the beat Valley coach, because this teams, like you said,
they're really good and when they don'tturn it over, they've been lethal.
(01:27:29):
Yeah, I know, you know, I think just four quarters of football
just come in and instead of youknow, you know you said it earlier.
We just gotta we just gotta playthe first quarter. You know,
if we can play the first quarter, you know, we we just seem
to be a team of momentum. When something good happens, we start playing
really well, and then as soonas something bad happens, it's, you
know, can we overcome it orwe're just not complimenting each other right now,
Like when the offense is playing well, defense kind of isn't. When
(01:27:51):
the defense is playing well, theoffensive which which it still goes back.
Do you know you I think thisyear we got fifteen first year starters lay
in and so you know, we'vegot to handle the wave of the game
better and and you know, weare young, but that doesn't give us
the any excuse to do anything differentlythan what we're supposed to do. Some
kids has been playing well for you, coach. I'd like to get some
(01:28:11):
names out there. Oh you knowmark Avus Yancey. Uh, you know
Megatron, Kelston Tarver, JJ Oliveron defensive line, Uh, Jamar Burnett.
Okay, our quarterback Bryson Riggins. He's a tenth grader and he has
come in. I think he's stolenfrom us the thousand yards in three games.
(01:28:32):
That's a player. Wow. Soyou know, he's really impressed me.
On the defense side, Tray Grayon defense has just been lights out.
He had a huge pick the otherday for US. Camras at defensive
end has been playing really well.Devin Pressley, you know, shows that
he's a two year starter all thetime and and and does his thing.
And you know, I think thething that I'm excited about is every week
(01:28:55):
and this is the difference. Andit's not that those last two teams weren't
good teams. But every week thesekids show up and you know, they're
not defeated. You know, wedon't We're not begging kids to come to
practice or do this or do that. They're just showing up and going to
work, and they just keep believingin whatever they're doing. We'll eventually translate
into exactly what we want it tobe. And you know, this isn't
a game of checkers. It's agame of chess, and we just gotta
(01:29:15):
keep working kids. Still with yourcoach, I was just hanging there.
You go. Absolutely, you gotsix games left, six football in front
of you and three region games. So that's right Friday night and Valley at
home. Hope you have a goodcrowd. It's good to see you tonight,
sir. Good to see you showup. Thank you, Keep your
head up. Keep Dylan Griggs andRussell Kenney. We're gonna attenue from Mole's
(01:29:36):
High School Coaches Show, rolling alongand presented by the author Pede clinic Op
like we all head coach, EricSpeakman and Smitty Griders. Who we got
next on the Coaches Show? Yes, sir, backs to Most RBQ,
(01:30:00):
Bobby Que the Mark, Jeff Van. We're live on the Kicker in Fox
Sports nine ten AM thirteen ten dam right here at Most Barbeque. We
appreciate North Pede Clink. We appreciateRicky Krmack, most Barque, their staff.
We appreciate all our coaches, sixteenof them here tonight, see well
more than sixteen to sixteen schools representedour last two up like a coach MIDI
grider and we're gonna do a doubleone coach. I mean, you got
(01:30:21):
me doing that band riggs when wewere, we were, we were gonna
introduce them that way, but goahead, and then we were gonna act
up. Well, we're done toshow up. When you got a rider
from Benjamin Russell coach, I meancoach speakman from Moli. It's been twenty
two years since we was on aheadset together. That was fun time.
We're gonna act like they were eachopposite. We were gonna, well,
(01:30:44):
I we don't have to be abunch of clowns. I know, I
know, but it was that's y'allget enough of that. We do,
Sorry, we do, we do. How are you two guys doing?
I'm good, I got you goodtoo. Yes, y'all were on staff.
How long ago? Twenty two years, two thousand and one, two
thousand and two, two thousand one. Somewhere in there I remember them days.
What a good teams back then?Man, it was. And I
told our group one day, youknow, because we got a bunch of
(01:31:06):
of those kids. Their dad's playedback on those teams, and they were
talking about it. I said, man, they would make y'all quit at
half time and they looked at us. I'm serious. They would make y'all.
Y'all the way y'all played today,y'all would quit it a half time.
Y'all wouldn't go back in the gameversus the way y'all some dogs,
maybe maybe the bullet that's it,And you would say, Demo, they
(01:31:29):
ain't uh was it? Eight rep? They ain't got the bullet? All
of them can't go. I can'tgo back in. That means it's time
to get out that. Both youguys were on defense at that time,
right both in the second. Dude, we'll coach speak. Man, Yes,
sir, you got a long tripahead of you, right, we
do four hours? I guess it'sfour it's it's near Mississippi. I don't
(01:31:51):
I'm kicking myself for playing this gamenow when you look at the road trip
and the mapping out the trip. But it'll be good for us. We
hadn't been on a long trip likethat in a long time. So if
we end up playing in the seveneight playoffs, you may have to make
a trip to Mobile because that's onlypeople you can play. So you at
least give us the kids a youknow, a taste of what you have
to do to go down there andhopefut that cross that's next year, next
(01:32:13):
year. Okay, so they're goingto do it on the reclassification where they
do the cross bracketing of seven eight. I thought they were starting it this
Yeah, we were hoping they were, but they said they wanted to just
wait till till they do the reclassification. All right, Well, last week
we won. We've won Senior Nightout that big, big win for Senior
Night. You always got to dothat. We didn't do it last year,
so big for those guys to beata Prattle team. That's a long
time since we've beat in Prattle thatbad. So it's a good night for
(01:32:36):
us. We had I think fourhundred and fifty nine yards on forty three
plays, so that's number ten yardsa play. Yeah, I was I
was really surprised when I saw thenumber of plays and we had about nine
or ten just huge plays, youknow, forty fifty yard plays. So
good night for Roman and uh comesMiller. The two big longest ones were
too, uh Miller and Davion Jones. Another senior called called a ball for
(01:33:00):
sixty four yards. He told hisbrother any, Uh, we didn't throw
to him much. Uh, justone of those nights that we never got
to you know, never got evengot in the package we use him in.
Defensively, I mean, everybody youtalked to, the senior on for
him or played against you, talksabout you. The defensive line. Yep,
those those front four and then thetwo linebackers are playing incredible. Jamari
excuse me, jamarv And Jenkins andJackson Kilcrease both had about fifteen sixteen tackles
(01:33:25):
last week. Uh you know, and that's what those yeah, and and
that. But that's also because thatyou know, defensive line's taking up so
many blockers that those guys will nowbe able to run free. So Theodore,
coach, what about you want totalk about them? Yeah? Real
quick? Uh Theodore, Uh youknow, good team, good physical team,
coach, mask I know it wasonly all the other morning and you
(01:33:45):
can see him taken over where youknow, kind of the stuff he did
at Saint Paul's getting in the eyeformation some and then defensively, same kind
of stuff he did at Saint Paul's. Some really good physical, tough players.
Uh. I think that you know, that area fits him probably a
little bit better than Saint Paul's did. You can just see his his uh
you know, him rubbing off onthose kids, and it's a good fit
for them. So, uh itbuilt a tough test for us Friday night
(01:34:10):
when we go down there. That'sdeep into that's by utile battery. It's
almost Yeah, you go down toto I ten and hang a right and
go about another fifteen minutes, getout of town. It gets dark,
yea, lights nothing out there.Smitty has been down there. We went
down there in twenty fifteen when Iwas at Park Crossing. That's that's a
that's a long way and it's outin the middle of nowhere. Yep.
So it'll be a be a differentenvironment for us. All right. Well,
(01:34:31):
coach last week Homewood, you saidit was a team they got better
every week, yep, And theydid, and the games they had lost
were too big schools. Right,Well, except the first game, Uh
yeah, they lost to Uh,Saint Paul, I mean that Saint Paul's
Spanish Spain Park. I'm gonna spitit out here in a minute. Yeah,
Spain Park in Vestadia, and uh, both of them are pretty good
(01:34:51):
seven day schools. So but youknow, it was just, man,
I hate an off week where wewere we had momentum, and I don't
want to blame it on anything. We didn't play well. I didn't have
them ready to play. It washomecoming. Probably should have handled a couple
of things differently during the week.Uh, And so we just didn't play
(01:35:12):
well. I really during the game, I thought we were getting whipped up
front on defense. Well, yougo back and look at the film,
and our defensive front played pretty good. We didn't fit right, and Eric
can tell you you know, whenyou're a one gap defense and you don't
fit, man, they find thatgap. And our safeties and our linebackers
didn't fit really well, and wecouldn't get off the field. They were
(01:35:33):
ten out of fourteen or third days. Yeah, I mean we held them
to fourteen third downs, which meanswe played pretty good on first and second
down, and then we couldn't getoff the field. And uh, you
know, whether it be third andwhatever distance, and you know, just
didn't didn't get off the field ondefense. And then offensively, you know,
it's the same thing that kind ofhaunted us against h Clay Central.
(01:35:55):
They dropped eight dared us to runthe ball and we we wouldn't stay with
the run like we should have. And uh we we got Malcolm the ball
once he's got you know, he'sgot to touch the ball more. Uh,
And so you know, we justgot to play better offensively to keep
us in the game. You know, our defense is good, we're going
three and out and they're having torun back out there over and over and
you know, we just, youknow, we can't hold up like that,
(01:36:18):
and that's on me. And thisweek we've just really focused on taking
care of the little things and youknow, trying to trying to play more
consistently on offense and and fix thegap integrity stuff on defense. All right,
this week, Smith stays, Yeah, they've had a tough Yeah,
they've had druggling and you know, but where we are, we can't we
(01:36:38):
can't take anybody for granted. Andthey're, hey, they got a new
coach and they're they're hungry for theirfirst win for their new coach. That's
at their place, and uh,you know sometimes when you go over there,
you know, and bless their heart, they got a beautiful school with
great facilities, but they hadn't touchedthat stadium. And you know, our
guys aren't used to that, anduh, sometimes you don't play well in
(01:36:58):
that environment. And uh and soyou know we'll have to fight that.
But and and I'm sure they're gonnabe fired up to get a win for
their coach. They're looking at us. We're six a school. We lost
it. You know, we've losttwo games, so they they're thinking they
got an opportunity to win. Andyou know, if we don't play well,
they will. Yeah. So thetwo games you lost some pretty good
dog on good teams well and CentralClay County, that's true. But you
(01:37:21):
know, where we are, wecan't take anything for granted, and we're
gonna have to play well and uhthat's the challenge. Just just you know,
we we really told talk to thekids a lot about it's about us
and you know, taking care ofthe little things, cleaning up our our
little things off the field as wellas on the field. And uh,
hopefully it'll translate. Did you comeout of a healthy coach? Yeah,
(01:37:41):
we're good. Uh, everybody's healthy. We got a running back that's had
a high ankle sprain that hadn't playedin two weeks and we're gonna hold him
out again this week, but he'she's our rotate guy. Uh, but
everybody else is healthy and just justlooking forward, trying to get back on
the right track. Man. Wegot to build some momentum. Yeah,
we've got We've got three big regiongames right coming here pretty soon with the
(01:38:04):
Briarwood, Helena and Pelham, andthat's going to determine the season. And
they're they're all of them are havingpretty good seasons, right Yeah, Well
Helena is undefeated and uh Briarwood iswell last week, so that was kind
of a surprise. And uh youknow, I I you know what you're
(01:38:24):
gonna get with those folks. They'rewell coats. They're gonna play hard,
and that's one thing our kids do. Uh. You know, we had
some of this trouble at park Crossingtoo. They look across the field and
they look at somebody and based offhow they look, they determine we're gonna
beat them. Yeah, and theydon't take any account how well coats they
are, how hard they play, and and and you get your butt beat
like that, and that's a that'sjust a you know, something that you
(01:38:45):
got to work through to get outof your program. Kind of a front
runner mentality. Uh and and sosometimes I think we fall into that trap
of, hey, you know, they don't they're not as fast as us,
maybe they're not as big as us, so you know, we don't
play as well, yeah, insteadof you know, real winners. They're
gonna play the same regardless of whothey're playing, right, And that's something
we're working on. And kids haveyou know, they've done well this week.
(01:39:09):
We've had a great week of practiceand you know they're positive, came
in with the right attitude Sunday abouthey, let's get this thing fixed.
And uh hopefully one thing both ofyou, both two teams having common bench
and Russell and Nookleia who we're talkingto, is both of y'all have really
good quarterbacks. Ye, that's true. Got to be a key mean,
yeah, you better have a goodquarterback. If not, what your season
is done this day and age,the way the game is played now,
(01:39:30):
you cannot be successful without a withoutthat guy, and it doesn't you know,
it may not be passing it,but you got to have that guy.
Yep, you better have the itfactor and you better be able to
take over a game that's right. And then our guy can I know,
Smitty's guy can I know you knowwhat Smitty was talking about. I don't
know that. Just looking at atthis area, I don't think there's any
teams other than sarah Land and Thompsonthat can have a bad night and just
(01:39:54):
walk in and beat people. Youknow, there's no I know, we
can't know. We have to playgood every night with our schedule and Smitty's
same way with you know, playingSmiths this week and we get them in
two weeks. So uh, theseguys, you know, they practiced just
as hard as everybody else. Soif you have a bad night, then
you're gonna be walking out of there, you know, awfully mad Well,
the regions you play in, youcan't have a bad no, no,
(01:40:14):
every week, you better show upand play. There's one or two teams
in there that you might can getby with it. Yeah, but even
then they got players too, andyou know, and you know I was
specifically talking about like the Montgomery schools. Yeah, but they got loaded down
with athletes, somebody they know.I go back to our game with with
Robert E. Lee, which iswhat Percy Julian. Now, it was
three nothing at the end of thefirst quarter. They were in there with
(01:40:35):
a two lasts, right, andthey can play with you for about a
half. Yeah, and then yougot to hit a few big plays on
them and then kind of take themout of their game. But if you
let them hang around, if theygot any confidence, man, and the
confidence and then the depth, youknow, if you let them hang around
and that depth doesn't become an issue, that's right, they get they play
with all that emotion and now theythink they can win. And then you
(01:40:56):
got your hands full. Now itwas six A South, we know and
has always been tough. But sevenA South now they're starting to mobile little
seems to their play Baker seems tobe pretty good. Yeah, see they're
doing well. He's got some goodplayers out there and doing it was Zach
Golson doing a really good job.And then uh Davidson came out of nowhere
the other night and beat Pharaoh prettybad. So that was a shocker.
(01:41:16):
Yeah, he installed the single wing. I think he's yeah, that's what
he used to run in Murphy. He's sprung it up for that game from
