Speaker 1 (00:02):
You are about to hear a feature that was created
to expose the scammers, thieves, and con artists among us.
The dialogue and temperament about to be used by Hollywood
Hamilton does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of iHeartMedia.
This is Fraud Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
So this week I understand we have somebody on the
phone with us that has been taken advantage of by
way of a beauty school scam.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Can you tell me a little bit about that, Samountha,
really quickly, I can actually so.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
In this con aspiring nail technicians, and a lot of
times many of these people are immigrants, are for lower
income families, and I'm looking for a stable career obviously
doing nails, and they're lured into enrolling in a so
called beauty school that promise, you know, certification licensing for
nail works, you can get a job, and then come
to find out.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Right, no such thing. It's not real interesting.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
I know that the beauty industry, it's a seven hundred
billion dollar industry and with that comes of course a
lot of scams. And we've got let me see, your
name is Gina from Bayside, Queens.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Let's say hello to Gina.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
Hi, Gina, Honey, Hi guys, how are you so?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Gina? Welcome to Fraud Friday.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
You were taken in what they call the beauty school scam.
This is something that's running through our tri state pretty
heavily right now. We're so sorry it's taken this long
to get back a hold of you.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Can you tell us a.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Little bit about how you were scammed, who you were
scammed by, and how much money you lost in this
scam on Fraud Friday.
Speaker 6 (01:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
So, I was pressured by my parents to go to school,
and I just knew college wasn't for me. So I
always liked nails and I thought, oh, maybe.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
I can do that.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
It's only two hundred and fifty hours, you know, so
I can get through it fast. And I was looking
around and I found an AD and I reached out
to them and I put fifteen hundred dollars down on tuition.
I borrowed a lot of that from my family.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Right now, you're talking about to be a nail technician, okay, right,
because you have to be licensed to be a nail technician.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Yeah, you do. You have to go through you know,
sanitation and everything like that. And at the end of it.
I got my certificates and I thought I was good
to go. And I went to apply at a nail
place and when they looked at my license number and everything,
they're like, this isn't this isn't right.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Whoa, whoa.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
So this wasn't a state board exam or anything like this.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
There's just exactly you know, they gave me a certificate.
I mean, to me, it was a legitimate. I didn't
really know what else to compare it to, and I
thought it was good to go.
Speaker 7 (02:42):
And I mean, did it look like a legitimate school?
Did you go to school when you went there?
Speaker 5 (02:47):
Well, it was actually a nail salon. It looked just
like a nail salon and it was you know, after hours,
So it was actually in a nail salon at a
strip ball in Queens and.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Gina, what did you d up paying overall?
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Was it just teen hundred down and then six hundred
a month after that?
Speaker 3 (03:06):
But you only did that for two months?
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Tied it up, Samantha, somebody telling this up because we're
gonna get this down on the total.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Just you did that for two months. So twenty seven
hundred and.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Twenty seven, all right, so instead of five thousand dollars. Gina,
you thought you could save yourself a little bit of
money there your parents' money from what you told us,
and you paid well what half that?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
So that was appealing to you?
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Oh, does your parents know, Gina? Do they do? They
even know that you've been taken?
Speaker 5 (03:32):
They have no idea. I'm so terrified to tell them
because I just know they're going to be so angry
with me, and I don't know you know how to
get that back?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
All right?
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Last question before we get to what's his name, Gina?
What's this guy's name?
Speaker 5 (03:46):
Matthew.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Let's get this guy on the phone. We're gonna get
a little crazy here, Gina. We're gonna get a little rude.
Might want to put on the ear muffs there. Things
are gonna get a little crazy. We're gonna try to
get your money back. What was the total?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Again? What was the exact total?
Speaker 4 (04:00):
She spent twenty seven hundred dollars in three different payments,
but twenty seven hundred total.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Okay, gotcha?
Speaker 7 (04:05):
And she hasn't told her parents, all right, because it's
their money.
Speaker 6 (04:09):
All right.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Here we go, Gina. We're going to do the best
we can. We're going to try to get your money
back here on Fraud Friday.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Hold on, okay, you're listening to Fraud Friday with the
KTU Morning Crew. We'll be right back with part two
when Hollywood and Marie make the call. Buckle up because
things are about to get rough. Welcome back for part
two for this week's Fraud Friday.
Speaker 8 (04:41):
Hello.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
Hello, my name is Tatiana, and I'm calling about your school.
Speaker 6 (04:48):
Hi, Tatiana, you're calling about the mail program.
Speaker 7 (04:52):
Yes, I'm very interested in signing up her classes.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
Oh that's great, that's a great choice. Where did you
find the nail program?
Speaker 7 (05:03):
I saw a flyard in a salon that I go
to and I thought, you know, I'm very interested in
this soul. So my dream is to open up a
nail salon myself.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
So oh, those are great aspirations. And you know, as
you know that you do need to be licensed by
the board and we can absolutely help you with that.
Speaker 8 (05:31):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (05:31):
The school open, it's a school opening during the day, so.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
We typically will go and do night classes. My school
is more operationally found at night just because it's a
little bit quieter and we actually are a full service
nail salon and school, so we do whole classes and
you know down the road you'll be able to take
clients and we can even help your job placement.
Speaker 8 (05:59):
You're in you're in Queen's Yes, yes, our facility is
in great nec How much is this going to cost me?
So we do have a few payment plan options and
also a pay upfront option, depending on what your financial
situation looks like. We do what's called you know, pro
rated discount. If you are paying upfront, we prefer venmo
(06:25):
or we can even accept cash and you can actually
take one thousand dollars off your tuition if you do
pay upfront.
Speaker 7 (06:32):
Okay, and after that I will be able to do
nails anywhere.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Yeah. Yes, we actually file the paperwork right in studio
for you. We don't have to do anything you with
your Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Of course, of course you've got the paperwork right there.
But the paperwork's literally got to be real. It's got
to be real there.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yes, legit, legit, you know, because the.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
First time you take a bogus, fagazy license to get
a job, they're going to turn you down. Of course
they are, just like they did Gina.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Fake, fake fraud, piece of absolute garbage.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
You lie, you're a liar.
Speaker 6 (07:10):
I'm sorry, what do you mean, Matthew.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
My name is Sean Hamilton. I'm a private investigator.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
I want you to say hi to somebody who took
a course of yours and you issued her a bogus license.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Her name is Gina. We're going to keep her last
name out of this. I'm sure you might remember Gina.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Hi, you piece of crap.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Okay, all right, Gina, I just want you to answer
a question really quickly. The sound of the voice of
this Matthew. Is this the man you've been dealing with.
We need to clarify that first.
Speaker 8 (07:35):
You recognize him.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
It's definitely him. I would recognize that any day.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Okay, Matthew Again, Tatiana is actually a woman by the
name of Marie. She works with us here at this
private investigating firm here in the city. Gina's hired us
because she has been taken by your bogus school.
Speaker 3 (07:53):

Speaker 2 (07:56):

that she didn't get hurt.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
