Speaker 1 (00:03):
You are about to hear a feature that was created
to expose the scammers, thieves, and con artists among us.
The dialogue and temperament about to be used by Hollywood
Hamilton does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of iHeartMedia.
This is fraud Friday.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Here we go. It's time another fraud Friday, and very
big here. This week's fraud Friday has to do with
the accidental text scam.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yes well.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
The accidental text scam is a type of fraud where
a scammer sends this like seemingly innocent text right, pretending
to have accidentally text the wrong number. The whole goal
here is to initiate a conversation with the goal of
developing a fake relationship to eventually trick the victim into
like sending money or sharing personal information. Right.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, and I've got Rob right now from Brooklyn.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Rob you there, Yeah, I'm here.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Okay, So Rob, well, just tell us a little bit
about how you think you're being taken advantage of right now?

Speaker 3 (01:05):
How did it start? What was the text?

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Are we still meeting for drinks? Is what she she
asked me in a text. I thought it was maybe
some girl that I talked to from a woman who
I've I don't know if I've spoken to her. Right.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
It's always one of those where you don't know if
this is somebody that you knew, or you've changed your
phone and your phone numbers and yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Then you're embarrassed to ask who is this? I get it.
But then you start to talk, right, yeah, yeah, you wrote.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Back to her, right, I did, because I'm I'm single,
so you know, just probe been like, uh, I'd love
to but but but can you remind me what your
name is?

Speaker 5 (01:53):
I tried to be flick without like.

Speaker 6 (01:56):
I remember her, and she told me, oh, oh you
really don't remember me. Well, I am currently stationed at
a naval base in South Korea.

Speaker 5 (02:11):
It's called Camp Humphreys.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
Have you ever heard of it?

Speaker 7 (02:14):
And I was like no, Yeah, how did you guys
agree to Who decided you would continue? Did you both
decide you just continue to chat with one another?

Speaker 4 (02:24):
She said she was sorry and and and she must
have gotten the wrong number. I don't know why or
what about her led me to want to message her back,
but I felt bad.

Speaker 7 (02:39):
No, so you guys start talking, you kept texting her.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Let me guess. Then you get a picture.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Right.

Speaker 5 (02:47):
Yeah, I'm not calling you guys because I want to
get made fun of or feel like, you know, we're
not making.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Fun of her.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
What what?

Speaker 7 (03:01):
What's given you the sense now that something doesn't feel right?

Speaker 4 (03:04):
She wants to come see me, and she'd ask him
for thirty five hundred but I.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Mean thirty five hundred dollars.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Yeah, I love you, Rob.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
It's a scam, honey, Yeah, she's scamming it.

Speaker 8 (03:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Don't don't send the money, baby, don't don't. All right,
So we got the number. Here's the deal. We got
the number. So we're gonna call her up. We're gonna
get her.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
We're gonna get her on the phone. We're gonna call
her up now.

Speaker 7 (03:25):
Okay, So but he hasn't said he hasn't sent the
money yet.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Please tell me you haven't sent the money yet, right,
please don't don't.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
No, No, I hope there was a cable bill, but
that was it.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
You helped her with a what cable bill?

Speaker 5 (03:40):
Cable cable bill? It was like an okay, all right?

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Is that it was that?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
It?

Speaker 8 (03:46):
Well?

Speaker 5 (03:46):
I did kind of send her like another three hundred holidays.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
So now we're up to uh all Okay, all right,
So all right, we have her number in front of us.
Her name is Valerie. That's what she calls herself. She
actually she's in the Navy. According to the information, she
is stationed at Camp Humphrey, South Korea, which is a
naval station. I'm going to act as a private investigator
and you're gonna have a You're gonna strike the conversation

(04:12):
with her, and we're going to see how far this goes.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Okay, all right, are you ready?

Speaker 4 (04:16):
Okay, can you do this?

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Can you do this?

Speaker 5 (04:19):
Yeah? I'm gonna do my best.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
You're listening to Fraud Friday with the KTU Morning Crew.
We'll be right back with part two when Hollywood and
Marie make the call. Buckle up because things are about
to get rough.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Portions of the following program will be recorded.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Welcome back for part two for this week's Fraud Friday.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
All right, we are back Fraud Friday, the Hollywood Handleton
Show on the kt Morning Crew.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Marie dial it up.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Right, she lives in Well, she's in the Navy. She's
stationed again. If you're just joining us, Camp Humphrey and
South Korea. Her name is Valerie, and this is the
accidental Tech scam. We've got Rob from Brooklyn on the phone,
who is identifying the fact that he obviously is being
taken by a woman.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Rob, you know what to do.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
We need you.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
To strike up a conversation before I come in. We
want to hear her before I come in and hit
her hard.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Okay, all right, all right, No, it's.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Gonna look like Rob's number. We're good.

Speaker 9 (05:17):
All right, Let's put the call in to South Korea
and they spoke twice. Valorie and Rob have spoke twice before.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
Here we go. Hello, hey, Valerie, Rob, oh here, how
are you. I'm really nice to hear from you. I
just wanted to talk to you, Valerie, and you know
I'm looking forward to you come in to see me.

(05:51):
It's still happening, right, How are you doing?

Speaker 8 (05:54):
Are you doing all right? I know you're missing your
dog for a while and staff you okay?

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Tim bit well actually found by my neighbor and luckily
he's back still on his meds on the men.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
I appreciate you asking me that.

Speaker 8 (06:10):
No, I'm so glad to hear that. Of course, I've
been thinking about you and I'm really looking forward to
seeing you soon.

Speaker 5 (06:19):
So you're still looking for thirty five hundred.

Speaker 8 (06:22):
Right as soon as you said that I'll be ready
to go, I was getting ready to book it. So
just waiting and really really excited to coming to see
you and all the different things we could do together.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
Just kind of seems like it seems like a lot.
And I've found some prices that are a little cheaper
on price line, and it would actually be like about
a thousand less.

Speaker 8 (06:45):
Well, the thing is, because I get all of these
benefits and discounts, you know, being in service, it's just
easier if I book it myself with the full thirty
five hundred, and if you think about it, with all
the discounts I might get. We can use it to
do something fun, you know, go to a restaurant or
something when I come in. Yeah, so it's just easier
if I do it. I do get it's, you know,

(07:11):
weird that I'm asking, So I totally understand if you
feel a little uncomfortable, but I promise you like we're
gonna have such a good time together. I'm already thinking
of the things that we can do when I come
see you. I got to approve a leave. That's all
taken care of, so I just have to buy that ticket,
and I'm ready to go. I think we're gonna have
a lot of fun. And honestly, I've been looking forward

(07:34):
and meeting you since we started talking. I just have
such a good feeling about us and what we're going
to do when I come see you. So I hope
you know, I'm really really looking forward to it.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Oh, I mean me.

Speaker 8 (07:49):
And anyway, like I told you before, even though it's
thirty five hundred, considering all those discounts that I was
talking about, you'll probably be reimbursed for a lot of it,
like I said, so it's not going to be a
full thirty five hundred. You're definitely getting.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
That back back. All right, stop stop, stop stop.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Time to end the charade, all right, yeah, and it's
time to buster.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Okay, listen to me, Valerie. I'm a private investigator in
New York City. My name's Sean Hamilton, and I'm working.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
With Rob right now.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
And uh, this is obviously a scam.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Valerie.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, are you in the navy?

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Are you in the Navy? Are you serving at Camp
Humphrey right now? And what's happening?

Speaker 8 (08:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (08:31):
You are?

Speaker 8 (08:31):
Huh No, I am Okay.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Can I ask you who you are. Can I you
mind if I ask you who your base commander is
right now? Do you know who your base commander is?

Speaker 7 (08:38):
Who they are right now?

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Who's your base commander right now at Camp Humphrey?

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Do you know?

Speaker 8 (08:44):
But you mean like the one who iron report to?

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Or I'd like to know. No, who's the number one
guy in charge? Who is the base commander in charge?
Who is the colonel in charge at Camp Humphrey in
South Korea where you're currently stationed.

Speaker 7 (08:59):
Who is it?

Speaker 2 (09:02):
H Okay Bush?

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:06):
You look, it's Colonel Ryan K.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Workman first of all, and you you're look, we've caught
you in this, in this tech scam. Rob has already
been taken for four hundred and twenty dollars and thank
god his friend told him that this is all bull.
You're obviously trying to con him out of another thirty
five hundred dollars. Valerie, you know, I got to tell
you something. You ought to be ashamed of what you're
doing right now.

Speaker 7 (09:27):
So many levels scamming a guy. Plus you're saying that
you are part of the military and you're not.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
That's a felony.

Speaker 5 (09:35):
I just looked it up.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Actually, yeah, obviously.

Speaker 8 (09:37):
It is you know why all yourselves?

Speaker 3 (09:43):
She hung up.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
She hung up.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Wow, that didn't do that escalated quite quickly. Yeah, really
that went from zero to sixty. You had her in
the corner.

Speaker 7 (09:50):
She freaked out, she freak.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
I know it hurts, Rob, I know it hurts. But
we did you a favor. We did you a favor.
I promise, I know how much it hurts.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Something.

Speaker 7 (09:58):
Yeah, you were just about to send are thirty five
hundred dollars. Can you imagine if you had done it?

Speaker 5 (10:04):
I guess I guess that's that.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, that is that would be that I would really
take your friend out to dinner that told you to.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Call us, But he did you. She wasn't even in
the navy. She wasn't even in the navy.

Speaker 6 (10:16):
Nope.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
I guess it could have been worse.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
It could have been worse.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
True, very true.

Speaker 7 (10:22):
Don't feel bad, Rob. There are hundreds and hundreds of
people that get caught up in this scam, just like you.
And in fact, forty two point seven million dollars a
year has been spent on this accidental time. Yeah, forty
two point seven million dollars.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Crazy, I know, because I get these things.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
I guess I get these things at least now once.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Twice a month. These tacks all the time, Rob, Sorry.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
And you're welcome at the same time. Yeah, yeah, you
have the same time.

Speaker 7 (10:55):
You have a great friend. You have a great friend
that's looking out for you.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
I guess I'd better buy a mistake or something.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, exactly, Yeah, you should be buying a mistake.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Exactly.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
