Speaker 1 (00:00):
D You are about to hear a feature that was
created to expose the scammers, thieves, and con artists among us.
The dialogue and temperament about to be used by Hollywood
Hamilton does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of iHeartMedia.
This is Fraud Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
This week. Burrie the contractor scam, right, the construction scam.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
I've actually relocated to Bloomfield, New Jersey, from Florida about
a year ago. I've already been scammed though.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
You're about to hear a horrific story from Shelley. Shelley,
why don't we take it from the top, tell us
a little bit about this contractor that came in that
you hired off the internet.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Well, I found rich online and I went ahead and
gave him a call, and he came by and was
to have my kitchen remodel in my half that remodel.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
That was it, Shelley, And I don't want to issue too.
I just I need you to be an example to
a lot of people listening to me right now. Shelley
did zero vetting. She did zero rating search, not that
she did nothing, didn't call a reference, No, what were
your thinking, Shelley.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I just I really, I really just wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I understand Shelley has recently divorced out of Florida. She
moved to Jersey, and we're going to see what we
could do for you right now. Let's let's take it
from you. Called Rich. Rich answered the phone, Take Marie
and I from there. What did he want?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
I explained to him what I wanted done. He said
that based off of what I told him over the
phone of like the measurements of the rooms and the
materials I wanted. And I sent him some photos and
he said, he gave me a quote of thirty thousand
dollars total and he wanted twenty five percent of that
paid up front. So I went ahead and I met
(01:59):
him the next day and gave him the check, and
he said that he was going to take that money
and get the materials. And he said that he was
gonna come by with the crew. But then he came
by himself and he proceeded to rip up my entire
kitchen and it's destroyed. There's nothing. There's no cabinets, there's
(02:19):
no countertop. My appliances are just sitting on the floor,
not even like the flooring. There's no flooring.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Oh Shelly, okay, okay, And that's part of the scam.
By the way, what is twenty five percent again of
thirty grand about seventy five hundred bucks, So you gave
him seventy five hundred dollars. And part of the scam
is he's killing time until the check goes through.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
And trust me, the next thing you're gonna hear from
him is, you know, I need I need you to
cut me another check.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
It's me six months and I can't get him to
come back. He just has excuse after excuse, and I
can't anymore. You know, I know six.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Here. But here's the deal, Marie. The guy's still picking
up the phone. He's still picking up the phone, so
he's still taking on jobs exactly. So yesterday, you know
we always send Anthony in first, Anthony places the call. Yesterday, Yeah,
I mean you picked up the phone.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
He wanted to come and give me an estimate and
pretty much start the whole process of what happened to her.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
And basically it was so you.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Know what we do here on frid Friday, everyone, we're
gonna place the call coming up next to this rich guy.
You know, we're batting we're batting fifty to fifty right now,
Marie and getting people's money back. So sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes we scare the hell out of
these people and they give the money back, and sometimes
we get a portion of the money. But we're gonna
do our best we can for you, Shelley. Okay, Okay,
(03:47):
now we're gonna have to You're gonna have to put
us on mute when we call this guy. Can't. You
can't just come on in and bust up the call
like he did your kitchen. You know what I mean.
You're gonna have to keep us on mute, keep us
on mute while we.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Just so unclear. If you want your money back, you
want your seventy five hundred dollars back. You do not
want him to finish the job for you that you
hired him to do.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Oh no, I don't want to ever back in my
house again. I just want my money back so I
can pay someone else to come finish this.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Okay, all right, and listen to me. Also part of
fraud Friday. Once, according to the Federal Communications Commission, once
we make a promise on the radio, you have to
stick to this promise, and that promise is once he
gives you back the seven g's. As soon as he
gives you back the money, you can't press charges any
longer because we're gonna that's part of the settlement we're
gonna make with him. We're gonna give and we're gonna
take a little bit, so you're gonna get your money back,
and then you're not gonna see this guy any longer.
(04:36):
You're not gonna be able to press charge. Just call
the police or call the FEDS on this guy or nothing. Okay,
you understand how this works.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
You're right back. Fraud Friday K to you.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
You're listening to Fraud Friday with the k TOU Morning Crew.
We'll be right back with part two when Hollywood and
Marie make the call. Buckle up because things are about
to get rough.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Juelman in Hell, New York, Welcome.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Back for part two for this week's Fraud Freuda.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
Hello, this is Richard. How can I hi?
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Richard? Hi?
Speaker 4 (05:29):
My name is Barbara Miller. You do remodeling, right, extensive.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
Remodeling, absolutely excellent.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Okay, So I need a full renovation in the bedroom,
bathroom closet. I need a brand new closet system, and
I'd like to go your.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
Closet is a walking closet or just a regular closet
you want to make larger?
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Yeah, you know, it's kind of two closet. I'd love
for you to merge it together. Just make one big
massive closet.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
Yeah. We put it in the two racks. Put it
all the racks, get it all pinked with a color
you want.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Okay, great? And so I'm assuming you'd do a jacuzzi.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
Oh yeah, we do chakuji as well.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Okay, great, because I'd like a jacuzzi.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
Is the chkuozie above ground you want or in the ground? Well,
if you have a pool already, No.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
I don't have a pool. I just want a jacuzzi.
Is it is it better to have above ground or is.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
It better to have It's a lot cheaper to go
above the ground. But if you want to do it
the right way and it lasts longer, I would recommend
put it in the ground.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
You know I'm going to say, I'm going to say
underground because money is no object.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I want it done.
Speaker 6 (06:37):
Well, are you looking to maybe get a pool? Put it?
Because you know we could do that for a reasonable price,
and you know, it's going to be a lot more money.
But I would definitely put the chakuzzi with the pool
in the pool, oh you would. So with the pool,
we're not going to be able to do the pool
until spring time. It's gonna get cold out. We get
the whole ground prepared, we can lay out of a
(06:58):
deck area for you know, but I'm just gonna have
to get like a deposit for that, and then we
could schedule a date in the spring for me to
come back. You know, once I look at it and
you sign papers, you give me a deposit and we'll
schedule the date to start.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Okay, Well, do you have an idea of what something
like that would cost?
Speaker 6 (07:15):
You know, I really got to look at it, but
I'm gonna say it's going to be at least one
hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Okay, but back in the
pool with Atkuzie the walking closet. But I really have
to come over there and look at it. But I've
been play in the range of one fifty or two hundred.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Okay, what if I give you, and I know you
generally take twenty five, But what if I gave you
fifty percent. If I gave you fifty percent, would you
be able to move this along? We can get it
done quicker?
Speaker 6 (07:40):
Oh, absolutely, we could.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Uh yeah, I don't think he's gonna have a problem
with that, Barber. I don't think he's gonna have a
problem with that. Yeah think huh excuse you? What? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
he's tried to do it. Are you when would you
be able to start?
Speaker 6 (07:54):
Rich?
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Well, I don't know. If you give maybe if you
give eighty percent, will start this morning, start an hour?
Maybe you're starting one hour exactly.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Hey, look at it.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
He doesn't even hear me talking. He's got his mind
so tuned in to what you're saying, because now you're
up to fifty percent that he's not even listening to.
There's another guy on the phone right now. Not at all.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
I can be here, Yeah, rich, Rich? Rich?
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Are you rich?
Speaker 6 (08:17):
Yeah? Rich?
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Are you wondering? Who's barged in?
Speaker 6 (08:20):
Yeah? Hello? You do it?
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Good?
Speaker 6 (08:23):
How you doing good?
