Speaker 1 (00:27):

Insurance Fraud. You know, Marie, there is so much fraud
happening in the Trice Date area.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Of course, if you listen to Fraud Friday, you certainly.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Know that way too much fraud going on.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud is an insurance campaign.
They're encouraging all New Yorkers to visit fraudeny dot com.
That's fraudy dot com. We'll tell you a little bit
more about New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud after the call.
But right now, this week on Fraud Friday, I got
Marlene on the phone.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Marlen, are you there, yep? Hello, Hi, I'm Marlen.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Welcome to Fraud Friday, Marie, she's out of Clifton, New
Jersey this week. It's the electrical contractor scam. So what
happened was she got a divorce and the home needed
to be completely revamped when it comes to the electrical issues.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Yeah, and that's important stuff. I mean, you hear about
these electrical fires with these older homes. I can understand
you wanting to make sure that all the wiring was
on the up and up.

Speaker 5 (01:28):
All right. So I had just gotten my house in Clifton,
New Jersey. As you said, it's older, but new to me,
very nice. I was told I needed to have the
whole place rewired. I got connected with an electrician name Guss.
He came over. He was really nice, seemed like he

(01:48):
was on the up and up.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Who referred you to this Gus guy?

Speaker 5 (01:52):
I found him in a Facebook group.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Did you vedam?

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Did you contact people who he had worked for previously
and verify that he did great work?

Speaker 5 (02:02):
No? I did not.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Okay, Oh, by the way, I understand, this call gets worse.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
It gets worse, That's what I understand.

Speaker 5 (02:09):
Yeah, that was my first mistake. We get to the house.
I thought it was a pretty comprehensive. I felt like
I could trust him. He quoted me around twelve five
hundred dollars, which I asked my friend. Everybody thought that
was a reasonable amount. So I hired him to come right.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Because from well again, just to reiterate, you had to
do the entire home.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Does that price though, seem right?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Twelve five seems low for an entire house? Does it
gets worse?

Speaker 1 (02:39):
It gets worse with Marlene. Marlene, let me ask you
a couple of basic questions. Did you get his contractor's license?
His union card?

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Was there anything that I asked for?

Speaker 5 (02:48):
All those things? He told me he would bring stuff
when he comes for the job. He didn't. I like,
stupidly just thought, well, he's really busy. Days are going
going by, He's coming and going the next thing I know,
two weeks have passed. He tells me he's done with
the job.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Right and still no license, no credentials.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Okay, right, but he wants his money.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
I'm sure, all right, So invoice nearly double, almost twenty
eight thousand dollars.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Now he wants He shoots her a low ball number.
She goes for the number because you know, it's an
attractive number.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Obviously to rewire an.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Entire home of course he comes back with the double
and here she is, Oh my god, what am I
going to do?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
You ended up paying him, correct, Marlene.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
I thought he's gonna assume me if I don't.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
Marlene, did you get competing quotes for this job?

Speaker 5 (03:41):
I didn't. Now it's three weeks later, fuses are blowing out.
I don't know how to deal with that. And this
guy doesn't even answer the phone.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
So what we do on fraud Friday every Friday is
normally when we can only take the call, obviously, when
we know we can get a hold of this guy,
Anthony always makes that pre call. Before Anthony made the
call last night, what happened, Anthony?

Speaker 6 (04:03):
Yeah, I actually had my dad talked to the guy
this time, because my dad knows more like.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
That's right, Anthony's father's is a contract in the day,
so he knows a little bit about e lectrician and
and stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
The point is that he is, all right, Marley, what
we're gonna do is we're gonna get this guy on
the phone. We have a really good success ratio on
fraud Friday. Marie and I are gonna go very hot,
very heavy on this guy. It's gonna get a little belligerent,
but I gotta be honest with you before we do this.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
I like to I want to warn you, Marlene. You're
a good example of what not to do.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, you missed the mark on a few things.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I don't want to come across a little meat. But
is it a teachable moment?

Speaker 6 (04:44):
Hollywood?

Speaker 3 (04:45):
It's a moment. Thank you, Sam. That's what fraud Friday
is all about. Yeah, I mean cruel world.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
This planet is not the Hallmark channel. We're gonna cat
We're gonna try to get our money back. Next right
here on Fraud fred Friday.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Here we go.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
You're listening to Fraud Friday with the KTU Morning Crew.
We'll be right back with part two when Hollywood and
Marie make the call. Buckle up because things are about
to get rough. Welcome back for part two for this
week's Fraud Friday Electrics.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Hi, Gus, who is Hi?

Speaker 4 (05:35):
My name is Marie and I got your name from
a couple the gals that's in my book club. And
I am needing some electrical work in my house and
I'm really hoping that you can help me out with that.

Speaker 6 (05:52):
We're lucky for you. We specialize in residential and commercials, So.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
What can I do for Okay, great, because this is
residential and I just got divorced and I got a
lot of money from it and just said, hey, I
love this house. I want to buy it. It's really gorgeous.
It's an older home, and I think I need all
new electrical throughout the house. I got these appliances that

(06:20):
my ex husband would never allow me to have, but
I bought them. I just want to raise everything from
my old life.

Speaker 6 (06:29):
I'm definitely happy that you're moving on to the next stage.
You like for sure. But you know a lot of
times when you buy these older homes, the inspectors they
don't tell you that the appliance is they're not really
set up for.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
The old wiry No, God, tell me that.

Speaker 6 (06:45):
I don't want I don't. I don't want to scare you,
but I mean, it's probably not going to be the cheapest.
The jobs you.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
We're just going to die.

Speaker 6 (06:56):
You know, let me take I'm sure we can work
something out, all right.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
I mean, I also have a garage that I'm going
to need you to rewire that has an apartment above
the garage. This is going to be like you're gonna
be here for a while.

Speaker 6 (07:10):
Let me see if I can, if I can work
around my cable figure.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Because I want demmurs everywhere. Do you think you could
put demmers everywhere everywhere? I want my house filled with demurs.
My ex husband would never let me have demmers, but
I want demmers in every room.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Of the house.

Speaker 6 (07:28):
Looking to get that mood lighting going on, I see, okay,
we can.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
I mean, I'll look it to your alexa if you want.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
I gotta tell you something. You know what I love
about this, Gus? I mean, Marie, you came on a
little strong there also. I mean, hey, Gus, my name
is Sean Hamilton. I'm a private investigator here in New Jersey.
We just need a little bit of your time, Gus. Gus,
like I said, my name is Sean Hamilton. I'm a

(07:57):
private investigator out here in Secaka's New Jersey. Listen to
me carefully. I've got Marlene. I've got a customer on
the phone with us right now. You performed a job.
You did a job for Marlene.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
And say something to us.

Speaker 6 (08:11):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Guess all right, So, Gus, here's the deal. You're not
returning Marlene's calls whatsoever? She hired us to look into
this problem a little bit. What's happened here? You didn't
show up with any type of electrical contractor's board of
New Jersey license or any type of union card, any
type of credentials whatsoever, and you double charged her.

Speaker 6 (08:31):
What's going on?

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Nothing is working in the home, Marlene, listened to me.

Speaker 6 (08:36):
I told you how many jobs I got going on
after your You know, you know how busy my schedule.
I told you I had to have three guys go
up to butler.

Speaker 5 (08:45):
I believe that is not true. Also, my house is inoperable.
Nothing is reliable. My blow dryer blows out all the time,
fuses are blowing. I've got my dishwasher doesn't even work.

Speaker 6 (08:58):
This is Marlene. Let me. Before I left the house,
I told you about the grounding issues you have in
your house. The receptacles are probably just the g f C.

Speaker 5 (09:07):
I'm not an electrician.

Speaker 6 (09:08):
That's why I understand that. That's why I showed you
where you're where your gs the eyes were located. All
you have to do is pus.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Okay, guys, GFCS.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
I know what you're talking about exactly.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Nothing's working. Now we're gonna do this. A couple of
different ways. Number one, you're going to pay her a
visit and redo everything and get it right. Number two,
you're gonna reimburse her. Or number three, Marie and I
are going to report you with the Electrical Contractors Board
of New Jersey, the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau, every fraud agency out there.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
We're going to contact, because that's what we get paid for.

Speaker 6 (09:43):
Listen here, everything was working great when I left that house,
so if anything, it's got to be user er Okay, Now, how.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Can electrical problem be user? How could that be? How
it's a freaking switch on and off? Okay, on and off?

Speaker 6 (10:03):
If she's blow infuses and trip and breakers, she's plugging
in way too many things.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
I'm not an idiot exactly.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
And did you present him with a list of the
new appliances and all those specifications?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Right? Okay?

Speaker 1 (10:15):
And you looked at him, Gus, and the home cannot
operate with all the stuff she bought.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
So now how are we going to handle this? Gus?
Tell me, how do you want how do you want
to handle this?

Speaker 6 (10:25):
Guys? I think I can come back out and I
can I can see what's not Why didn't.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
You answer her phone? Calls. Why didn't you return her
phone calls?

Speaker 6 (10:33):
I've got I've got five different jobs going on right now.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
Yeah, it's always that, the five other jobs, you know.

Speaker 6 (10:41):
And why did this do upgraded her bathroom? I upgraded
her kitchen. I gave her nothing working.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
Nothing's working, nothing's working, gus, And it was double the
estimated price.

Speaker 6 (10:55):
I've been in business for fifteen years.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Are you aware what the state of the business.

Speaker 6 (11:00):
To defraud in people? All right?

Speaker 3 (11:01):
I like this, how about this? Are you insured? Are
you insured?

Speaker 5 (11:06):
I'm not honest, like I said, Well, I don't really
want him in my house again. I don't trust him
now that he knows I'm upset. I'm like, I understand
what you say.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Okay, we're gonna have to go to the Electrical Contractors
Board of New Jersey asap, and the Better Business Bureau
and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Can you give her half of the money back?

Speaker 3 (11:31):
How about the half of the money back?

Speaker 6 (11:33):
So if I give her half her money back, we're talking.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
The job is as is, Marlene, Marlene, Marlee, you got
to think about that question.

Speaker 6 (11:41):
I'm gonna wave the labor fees and I'll waive our
travel fees going to and from the shop to your house.
All right, that should work around. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Ten five.

Speaker 6 (11:52):
I can't wave the material fees because it costs me
money to install in your house. I'll wave the I'll
wave the labor, and I'll wave the trip.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
I guess you know. Marlene, Marlene, are you good? Are
you good with this?

Speaker 6 (12:04):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Okay? All right?

Speaker 5 (12:05):
You better hope that no one ever asked me for
a recommendation for you or your company.

Speaker 6 (12:10):
I'm just whoa if you're going to start bad mouthing me,
hold on, hold on, Marlene, Marlene, Marlene.

Speaker 5 (12:19):

everything's done, okay. I just wanted you to know from Marlene.

This week's Fraud Friday brought to you by New York
Alliance Against Insurance Fraud. Great organizations.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
It's a great awareness campaign, you know, and it's it's
encouraging all New Yorkers to visit fraudany dot com and
report any kind of insurance fraud.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Truly, there is so much fraud that the insurance companies
had to get together and form their own coalition to
make people aware of all the fraud happening.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
And that's what this alliance is. So it's because it's
costing you and me.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
It's costing us every time somebody dumps a corvette in
the Hudson River exactly.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
It's costing us. It's costing us, you know what I mean.
So there it is.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Fraud Friday again, brought to you my New York Alliance
