Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are about to hear a feature that was created
to expose the scammers, thieves, and con artists among us.
The dialogue and temperament about to be used by Hollywood
Hamilton does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of iHeartMedia.
This is Fraud Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
You know, on Fraud Friday, each and every Friday. We
don't care what the amount is. If you were taken
by somebody, I don't care if it was twenty five
dollars or twenty five thousand dollars. Last week we helped somebody.
What was it? What was the problem last week? Travel? Right,
the fake travel scam. Yeah, remember we ended the show
with we were going to try to get him what
was it, eighty five hundred of it back? Yes, Marie
(00:41):
and I and it was Marie's idea. We went all
the way with it. We got him his full twelve
grand back. That's right. On that travel scam. Remember the cruise.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
There was no confirmations, there was no itinerary had been sent.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
So that's a little update on last week's frid Friday.
Actually got him the full twelve g's back. But this
week we got a gentleman by the name of Lennie
on the phone with us right now. And Lenny doesn't
have that big of amount he needs back. In fact,
he told me off air he doesn't even care if
he gets any of it back. It's the principle of
the twenty five dollars. But according to the State Department
(01:14):
Consumer Protection Bureau, this is one of the hottest scam
fraud events happening in our area today. And Lenny tell
everyone what I'm talking about.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, So I've been looking all over you know, LinkedIn
Craig's List, and that's where I found this job on Craigslist.
On their it.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
Sounded pretty good. This this ad like it was something
that you could do.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
It was an entry level job over at home depot.
When I was married, my wife always gave me a
honey do list, so I was used to, you know,
doing all kinds of things around the house.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
So I want to clarify really quickly, this is not
anything against Home Depot. It wasn't Home Depot actually taking
you know, the ad out looking for people to work
at home depot. This was a particular gentleman who act
as if he was with an agency. From what I
read on your letter, in order to get on the show.
This was an agency that gets jobs for people, correct,
(02:20):
and the processing fee was twenty five dollars. You sent
the twenty five you Zeldam or whatever it was. What
happened after that, Lenny?
Speaker 4 (02:29):
So I gave him twenty five dollars. I called a
week later. You know, I'll never return my call. Two
weeks later, still no return, CaAl.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
But it says here on the letter in order to
get on the show, Lenny, you spoke to the man
one time. So what did he say on that one time?
What did he tell you?
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Well, he said he was going to review the application
and get back to me quickly and just never got
back to me.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Oh wow. And then did you at that point you
realized that he was ever going to get back to you?
Speaker 3 (03:01):
There is okay, agent again, say he's just pumping people
from twenty five bucks.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
Twenty five?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Who's Lenny? Who's Lisa? Somebody here by the name of Lisa.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
That's my daughter, Lisa. She's the one that told me
about the program.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Okay, all right, very good, good, all right, Well that's
what it is. It's these fake employment scams. Uh, Lenny's
been taking advantage of right, what's his name? What's the
name of the agency. Tell me a little bit about
before we place the call. Uh, and we're gonna, we're gonna,
we're gonna, we're gonna look into this.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
I spoke to Pete at a wide staffing in recruiting.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Okay, so Anthony did the pre he did the pre
call last night. What did you get aunt when you
call him? What was the he picked up and everything?
I told him.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
I had a full time job and I needed something
for the weekend, like a part time thing.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I don't get paid enough for my full time job.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
So okay, so the number still works, the number, and
he's there, he's there there, right here, all right?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Very good?
Speaker 5 (04:01):
Yeah, because imagine twenty five dollars he does this all
day long? How much does that add up to?
Speaker 6 (04:06):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (04:07):
No, it's a small time scam.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah right, but no one's paying attention because it's twenty
five bucks a pop.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Who's coming after you and everybody's looking for work? Right,
makes a quick.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Three hundred and four hundred bucks a day, this guy.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Right, pray, I'm desperate people looking for work.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
All right, Lenny, stand by, We're gonna be right back
with you.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Okay, thank you, guys. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Okay, all right, we'll be right back.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
You're listening to Fraud Friday with the KTU Morning Crew.
We'll be right back with part two when Hollywood and
Marie make the call. Buckle up because things are about
to get rough. Welcome back for part two for this
week's Fraud Friday.
Speaker 6 (04:56):
See having set here? What can I do for you?
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Hi?
Speaker 5 (05:01):
My name is Marie, and I am looking to see
if you could help me find a job. I I'm
hoping that you can help me.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
Yeah, I mean that's pretty much what our service is.
And what's your past experience or any type of job
you're specifically looking for?
Speaker 5 (05:21):
Well, you know, I just I really don't even know.
At this point, I've been out of work for about
a year. I'm not finding anything that.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Did you go to school for anything? Are you a
professional in any capacity?
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Or are we looking I finished high school and I
did a couple of years of community college, but my
last job was a server in a restaurant. Before that,
I've you know, I've worked in office space.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
So our service has a bunch of different like under
a sweeping umbrell, essentially different restaurant jobs that can get
you apply at office job, secretary jobs. I feel like
you can qualify.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
For Okay, it is, yeah, I mean I'd prefer an
office job.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
Actually, give me one, say I do we just had
an offer and I just got somebody a job as
a personal assistant maybe two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
You did.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
Wow, Okay, forty.
Speaker 6 (06:18):
Dollars an hour is not bad. There is you know, again,
I mentioned there is a twenty five dollars application fee
per application, which is standard for what we do. Assuming
you know how this works, it's pretty standard that we
have a twenty five dolls.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
I actually don't know how it works. Can you explain
to me how how this process?
Speaker 6 (06:37):
You pay twenty five dollars and we get it essentially
to the head of the hiring process. Instead of you
going in and meeting, we skip that that small talk
and we get you. You know, people have a reputable
company that people trust. And the more jobs it sounds
like you're looking for multiple opportunities, the more that you
applied for, the higher up you go. Because again I
(06:57):
get maybe one hundred applications a day, and you know,
it's a long line if you're just buying one application.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
If you buy you know or Okay, So if I
wanted to apply for five positions that you had for me,
that would be twenty five times five.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yeah, but like one hundred and twenty five dollars. Yeah,
after I don't even have a job.
Speaker 6 (07:21):
Yeah, right, I could get your five applications, I could
share you.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
Great, that's great. Doesn't that sound like a great deal?
What a great deal for him?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Quick money? And then what happens is he ends up
not even calling you back. Exactly a week go, go buy,
two weeks, go buy, three weeks ago buying this Pete
guy doesn't even call you back. Now, next thing you know,
you've lost one hundred and twenty five dollars. Pete, what
kind of scam are you running down there? Hello?
Speaker 6 (07:50):
Yeah, hey Pete.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
You're wondering. You're wondering. Who's coming in right now?
Speaker 6 (07:53):
You're wondering, Pete, this is not Marie. I'm assuming what
can I do for you?
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yeah, So what you can do for me is listen,
listen very intently, Listen, very carefully. My name's Sean Hamilton.
I'm a private investigator here in New York City, and
I work with a guy by the name of Lenny
Lenny Ster hired us to do some investigating on your agency. Okay,
got your phone number at this point. Well, you live
in Queens. You living four steals Queens, isn't that right? Pete?
(08:22):
All right, Pete, listen, listen to me right now. Listen
to me right now. You're running a scam and we
know it.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
It's an official business.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
No, but in New York's employment agencies are generally prohibited
from charging or accepting fees from job applicants before pleasing
them for a job.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
That was my assistant. That was Samantha Standard who works
at the agency. Right here, and listen, listen to me.
Let me just Pete, do we have your attention right now?
Speaker 6 (08:50):
I'm listening.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
We want Lenny's money back. You owe him twenty five dollars. Now,
I know that's not much. Exactly not exactly stole it
from him.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
I don't know who Lenny is. He's one of again
I talked to.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
I want you to talk to Lenny. Lenny. Are you there, Lenny, Yes, Lenny,
the gentleman. This Pete guy that's on the phone with
us right now. Can you identify that voice? Is this
the voice that you were talking to? Is this the
guy from this bogus agency that took twenty five dollars
of your money? Is this the guy?
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Yep, yep, he's the one. Sounds okay, just like the one?
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Okay, Lenny? Is there anything you can say to him
to jog his fake ass memory to recognize you or
to remember you? Can you?
Speaker 4 (09:33):
I uh was a plug for that job you had
at home Depot. Do you remember the home depot job
that was on?
Speaker 5 (09:41):
There?
Speaker 6 (09:42):
Be more specific for me, Lenny and I get a
lot of home.
