Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's one of three five k T the beat of
New York. It's not time for tell me something good?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Who's on tell me something good? My name is Stephanie
and I'm here with the Saint James General Store. I
run the oldest continuously operated general store in the country.
We have never closed our doors since eighteen fifty seven. Wow, amaze,
(00:33):
Where is this?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Where is this?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
So we are located in the heart of Saint James,
which is closed to Smithtown right here in Long Island,
and we are one hundred and sixty eight years old,
which is pretty amazing. So in one hundred and sixty
eight years, we have never closed our doors.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Do you sell anything that dates back to the eighteen fifties? Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
So one of the things that are the most popular
in the store is called the Molasses Pop. It's a
molasses chocolate covered pop in a gold wrapper, and it
is the most iconic candy that we have in the store.
We've had it the longest out of any candy that
we sell here. So you cannot leave here without a
molasses pop. It is everyone's favorite thing.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Because Stephanie, can you explain to our audience what a
general store was back in the day, it was seven
to eleven. It was the seven eleven of the eighteen hundreds, right.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
It was the wall, wall of the shovels and dirt. Absolutely,
so this was the hub for the entire community. You
could get yard goods, kitchen wears, medicine, shoes, medicine for
your horses because horseback was still how you got around,
and tobacco, groceries, hardware, anything that you needed was found
(01:51):
at this one general store. But back then you could
even rent the space to have parties for celebrations, and
so it really was a place to socialize and have
events and do anything fun. Stephanie, what about the building itself,
I mean, is it since eighteen fifty seven, what's been
what's changed?
Speaker 1 (02:10):
I mean it must be. What was it made out of?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Rock?
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Back then rock basically stone, stone, They had wood, they
had wood, Hollywood, No, I know.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
So our building has actually been unchanged structurally since eighteen
ninety four. The original columns outside the posts where you
tied up your horses. We have the original mailbox because
the general store was the original post office in town.
And we actually have the original telephone. We had the
(02:39):
first telephone in the village in this store. What a
great trip that would make for a week, and it
take the kids out there, drive a little, see some history,
see an amazing building like this that dates all the
way back to the eighteen fifties.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
And how do we get out there? Stephanie, sure, so
we do have the train station that is very close by.
So the train is an option. Take over here from anywhere,
which is amazing. Right off of three forty seven, right
off of new nessaquog in Smithtown. Now you're not too
far off the lie correct? Okay? Cool? All right, everybody
(03:14):
or the Northern State. And what's the name of the
general store again? The Saint James General Store. Samantha get
her our Kat Morning Crew T shirt. I love that story.
Fantastic And Stephanie, thank you so much for listening. We
really do appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Oh, thank you so much for featuring us a little bit.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
I get so nervous, but thank you, thank you for
being patient.
