Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome into the Creative Construction of Wisconsin home improvement show
on Fox Sports ninet twenty and your iHeartRadio app coming
live from the Donovan and Jorganson Hitting and Cooling Studios Bingo.
I have a Donovan and Jorganson story for you.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Is this part two from last week?

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Part two? Okay, yeah, Jay came out from Donovan and
Jorgensen after we realized we couldn't move in the dryer
that we bought because our dryer stopped working. Had somebody
come on. They said, hey, maybe it's just the vent.
You might want to look into that. Well. I called
the h showf the The people at the condo group said,

(00:40):
did we have we had the vents? Yeah, we had
it done May twenty first, and I had the guy
there and he said how they do it? And she goes,
what and go whether they go in everybody's condo and
blow it out or they go up on the roof
and blow it in. She said they went up on
the roof. He said, well, you wasted that money, this
young guy. So I called Scott Fisher over at Donovan

(01:00):
Jorgans and sends Jake out on Monday. He's up. I
didn't even really know. We had an addict went up
in the attict and he moved some stuff and cleaned
some stuff out, and the dryers working like a million bucks.
And I can't thank these guys enough. What a nice
young guy. Jake was from. Donovan Jorgenson answered all the questions.
My wife had went up there, cleaned it out.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
So they do, they do clean out vents, then they do.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
They did a great job with it too. He took
a bunch of pictures. He said, Hey, you got some
issues going.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
On you anything surprising in there?

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Oh you did, Yeah, a few things.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
If you want to talk about it on the air.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Nah, I'm not sure that we don't do it. We
should probably make some changes. But I want to thank
those guys at Donovan Jorganson and last week's guest the
water doctors. The water nerd is what he calls himself. Yeah,
we had him out and we're we're getting involved with
We're gonna sign up and involved. What a good guy.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, I use them. I use them for I use
them from my shop, not just for the water, for
other service. Yes, we didn't get chance to talk about that.
That stop leak it picks up any leaks or if
somebody acting leaves the water on or toilet is running
or something, I don't just keeps your notifies your system.
It's really it's awesome man.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Well he he was so uh. He's just really knowledgeable.
And my wife had a lot of questions for him.
And when when he left, my wife was like, hey,
let's I'd sure like to get involved and do that.
It's a great So we're gonna.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Be the only guy I know the watch all his
own bottle of water.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Man, and it's good.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
And he goes to the restaurant prills out his own body.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
He wants you to take some of that water home, Like, yeah,
you left him. It was here, so I took it.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
That's fine.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I offered him a body. He's like, no, I got enough. Oh,
don't worry about that.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
I can vouch for his water too, because we put
his system in our house. And actually he's in our
tour house as well.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
That's good to know our special guest there. He is,
Dave Kelly, how you been.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Great, Good morning, glad to be here.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
I have not seen you for a while. Everything's good.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, yeah, ye. Last time he was on we were
at the other our station.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
We were in fact, I talked to the water doctor.
I said, hey, Dave Kelly's coming in. He goes, oh,
he'll be good on that show. I go, yes, he is,
he as good as you. He goes, oh, no, but
he'll be good.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Then we laughed, John, it's actually his wife.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
His wife did great. Well.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
That guy can pull off wearing a kilt, so he's
better than all of us.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah. I could never do that. Yeah, yeah, me neither.
And I don't want to see it. And he hasn't warned.
He didn't work to the plane we had. Yeah, once
you see it, it's over right. Hey, how how is
business for you in life? And again it's been a
couple of years since we've talked. Everything's good.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, no, everything's great. We're we're getting into our busy
season and just had the Nary Spring Show, so had
a good turnout there and we're getting wretcheted up here
to get our product project done so we can be
ready in three weeks from today for the Nary Spring.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Tour May seventeenth and eighteen.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
I'm not very excited about this show. Usually don't get
questions too many questions before the show All about is
everybody invited? And do you have a bank for pre
approval a goal? Yeah, I don't know what that question meant.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
I don't know, but tickets are free. So if you
want to go May seventeenth and eighteenth, when when you're
three weeks away and we're going to talk about that
a lot on today's show, and we're certainly going to
talk about dimension design, build remodel your company. But you said, look,
we're three weeks away and we've got to get this
project done. The snowball starts rolling down the hill and

(04:30):
you either get out of the way or right or
it's going to run you over. You got three weeks
to get it done. Is that keeping you up at night?
Or are you pretty confident that this single be ready
to No?

Speaker 3 (04:39):
No, I'm confident. We're pretty good at planning and scheduling,
and I've been here before. We actually, uh back a
few years ago, we had a new home construction project
in the NBA Tour and that was that was that
was a white knuckler event too, So just just got
it done just in time. But no, Well, we're in

(04:59):
a good place.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
And and you're you're the one that you're showing and
you're involved in it is out in Pewak Pewaukee. Correct?
And is that a remodel.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
It is a whole house remodel. And when I say
a whole house, I literally mean every closet we are
We are doing something in every room, and it's it's
a kitchen makeover, it's every bathroom we're making over. We
relaid out the master. They even actually had a unfinished

(05:29):
room above their garage attic space that was quite a
large space that they finally decided to finish out. So
turn that into cool bedroom and kind of a bonus room.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
That's cool. Where is this home right.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
In Pewaukee, right off on one sixty four?

Speaker 2 (05:47):
You could walk there?

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah? I could. I I could. I'll probably take my and.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
I could, and I have to because I gotta do
this every week. Does this house have a basement?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
It does have a basement. Yeah, we did, although we
didn't so that's that's the one place we actually shouldn't
say that. We actually did add a new water heater
down there. And actually the aforementioned John Attley, we had
him in there to do a water filtration system as well.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
That's awesome. Well, and I'm looking at the description of
this and when you say Some of the biggest changes
include the second floor hallway leading to the new bedroom
bonus room above the previously unfinished garage, adding four hundred
and fifty extra score feet of living space to the house. Man,
When did you guys start on this project?

Speaker 3 (06:34):
We started construction in early January, but it's probably been
in the design works for probably six months prior to that.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Boy, and it's again, look, people are going to be
able to walk through. Will you be there for those
two days or so? Yeah? So there.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
We actually have some other team members there as well.
You know, some of our our vendors will will join
us in the tour.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
That's awesome. Yeah, yeah, so any questions people have that
and Bingo talks about this a lot on the show
and and and the reason that that the show at
State Fair Park with Nairy and the Home Garden and
and NBA, the reason those shows are so are getting
back to being really successful is the fact that they
get to talk to guys like you, Yes, rather than

(07:19):
look at pictures and read the bio and read.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
The description modeling. Remember, you need to develop a relationship
because you never I mean, you're if people are gonna
live with you, they're in your house every day.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
For a little bit.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, I always say you're dating for a bit, but
it is. Yeah, it definitely is.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
So when and that's what these tour, those whole tour
of homes. You get to actually talk to people that
you're going to be working with, and if you get
along with them, you know, that's your first start.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
You know.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Sometimes you know, some guy might be a couple thousand
dollars cheaper, but your relationship is everything.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
And and the tour of homes, you know, to be
able to get to to if you're thinking about redoing
your kitchen or thinking about doing something in your home again.
You can go online and look up all these but
to be able to walk in and see and ask questions,
why did you use this backsplash, and why the coloring
for this? What was the thought process? And to be

(08:11):
able to have that conversation with somebody, to see the
finished project and they're going to be able to see
pictures of the before and after, I'm sure, and to
be able to say, look, what was the thought process
behind doing it this way? Well? How you can't get
more valuable information than that right now?

Speaker 3 (08:29):
No, it is our favorite way to you know, show
off our stuff because you get that conversation that one
on one has Bengo talked, you can see if you
guys are going to get along, and you know you're
their first hand. I mean, it's just there's no better
way to to show customers what we do and how

(08:51):
we do it.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Do you like that? Did you?

Speaker 3 (08:54):
You know?

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Some people enjoy sitting in the space that they helped
design and true questions, and there are other people that
are like, ah, you know, to sit for two days
and answer some of the same questions over and over
again might get a little bit tough. Do you enjoy that?

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (09:11):
I do?

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, you know, I love the relationship building that we're doing.
And quite honestly, sometimes even our customers are there, you know,
chewing the fat with potential people that walk in. So
we love that. I mean, there's no better salesperson than
actually having the customers trying to talk them into it.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
As I say, it's such a great feeling when you
have your customer talking about how good your job is
that paid you money to be there. I mean, that's
a really good feeling.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
My wife and I a couple of years ago went
out of the tour of model homes we were in
wah with Tosa and the we went to a couple
of them and the third one we went to, the
homeowner was there and they had this small kitchen table.
They had two little kids and the small kitchen table.
My wife was like, wow, you know the way you

(10:01):
have that set up, and she goes, let me show
you something. She walked us in the basement and she said,
that table, the wood for that table was sitting up here.
It's been there since we bought the house. It just
was there. And the company we're working with was in
our basement and said, what is that and they said,
we don't know. It's just piece of wood that's been
there since we bought the house. He said can I

(10:23):
have it? And they go can you have it? He goes,
this would be perfect for that kid's table that you're thinking.
They took it to their shop, designed it, cut it
and it fit perfect. And she was so proud that
they said, look, let us just take that piece of wood.
It's the perfect size and we'll fix it up. Rather

(10:43):
than buying and adding more to the dollar amount. She goes,
they were utilizing stuff that we didn't even we were
just going to throw it away and it just worked
out really well. And for the homeowner to have this
story to tell and say, look, it hadn't been the
smoothest because there's always you know, you always think is
it's ever going to get done, and there's a lot

(11:04):
of dust and but now the finished product, and to
be able to have her talk about in as Bingo
talked about in such glowing fashion to the people that
were standing there with a big spot on their face,
going yeah, we we we found that would and put
that table together just added a little something to the
whole deal.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
No, it really does. And we've we've been a regular
person at their company at the tour and we actually
one year had a homeowner there, not for the whole thing,
but they were there for one afternoon and I didn't
really have to say a word. It was I mean,
they just they couldn't stop talking about what we did

(11:45):
there and how we did it. And I'm trying to
talk these homeowners into sticking around at least for a while,
either one day or both, so we'll see. But yeah,
it's it's really it's really greazy to do.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
It's the prior about this project. All these other nary
contractors out there with their projects are they're very proud
of what they did and they want to show you.
They want to Basically what they're doing is they're bringing
what they did and you should, you know, you can
see what they did. And when yeah, when you get
a chance to talk to the homeowners like this and
homeowners like you know, spend all the money and they're
talking about how great year work is, that's awesome and

(12:19):
it's a really good feeling. It's while we all do
this business, is we like taking someone's got a mess,
got a problem, and you turn into something positive and
you're like, oh, you guys are the greatest. Hey, if
we love that feeling.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
On May seventeenth and eighteenth, you can go on the
Narry website and take a look at all the details.
It'll give you a map on where all of these
these houses and then they give you a great little
write up on each of the companies and this project
that they've done, from a whole house remodel to a
first floor remodel, to new construction to outdoor space, which

(12:54):
has gotten to be you know, huge, it's a huge
category in our business. You guys do much with the
outdoor space.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
We do them as part of a bigger project, so
we don't ever just do that.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
But you know, are you finding that that people are
asking more questions about it seems to me again, all
these TV shows that people like my wife and I
and other people watch that outdoor living space, especially in
the state of Wisconsin, we don't get to utilize that
space as often as people from around you know, other

(13:26):
parts of the country. So when we can, we try
to do.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
We want to be out there. We want why they're
very important yet because we get locked up for months
on end here and with this claimant and when it
gets nice, you just want to be outside.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Yeah, they are very important, and that's cool that you
guys Will Will Will have that conversation with people as
part of a larger project, but as part of this
this Nary show again May fifteen, May seventeenth and eighteenth.
The tickets are free, but you need to get a
ticket in order to get involved in this. And I
think it's I'm glad it's for two days because I

(14:00):
don't think anybody can get to all of these in
just one day, but they're all fairly close. I mean,
you can do this in two days, for sure, Yeah,
you could.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
In years past. It used to be bigger, so it
was a lot more challenging. But ever since you know,
COVID happened, everything's been down a little bit. But we're
because we missed a year or two with this tour
because of that, but we're trying to bring it back strong.
So yeah, we got to think seventeen locations and yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Man, I look forward to it. And there's something in
this for anybody. There really is. There is. You know,
you can go and just see this kitchen remodel or
the whole house remodel. And again for tickets are free.
So May seventeenth and eighteenth from ten am to four
pm if you go to the Narrow website look up
the tour Remodel Homes. Can we talk before we get

(14:54):
to a break a little bit of the process for
dimensioned design build remodel. And I'm wondering, when you talk
about the process of it you had brought up COVID,
how much have you how much of your business changed
at that point with new things on how you can

(15:14):
go into homes, things like that, and have you kept
some of the things that you changed at that point
with what you're doing now.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Well, I think Covid changed everything in life, unfortunately, but
I would say that it actually helped our remodeling business
because people were spending more time in their homes and
the fact that you know, people are don't have to
go to an office anymore as much as they used to,

(15:46):
so it was a lot of work from home. So
they were understanding that their home was really truly their
castle and where they were going to spend most of
their time. And that I think that really had people
thought more about, you know, creating their castle into truly
what they wanted to be. So remodeling I think picked

(16:08):
up because of COVID.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
You know, your company is perfect for people like me
that can't make a final decision on anything right. And
one of the questions that I get when when we
have a design build person on the show like this
is you know, why do people utilize the design build
And I could be your spokesperson because we just needed

(16:33):
new hardware for cabinet and I went in the fetal position.
There are so many choices that I couldn't make a choice.
And to be able to have somebody who has seen
everything and to be able to guide us in that direction,
I think it's so important. If somebody asks you, you know,
the elevator pitch thing, why should somebody use or choose

(16:55):
a design build team, what do you tell them.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Well, the design build team is unique and that there
is a true cohesiveness between the designer and the builder
at all times. So as opposed to the other scenario
where you could hire an architect, get some plans done,
then you send it out to bid. Oftentimes, what happens
with that scenario is the budget isn't talked about at

(17:17):
all with the architect and you get these plans and
then all of a sudden you put numbers to it
and people go, what huh? How much? So when you
have that design build experience like we have, we are
one exploring all the options and then two going through
a thorough budgeting process where we can modify the decisions

(17:40):
in real time to if we have to work on
the budget, then we can make some different decisions where
I've also time to time get plans from architects that
are done, and it's when the numbers come back Oftentimes
it's like, well, I got to take five steps backwards
to go forward again, and I people you don't want

(18:00):
to get the drawings done until you know, we figure
out where we are if we're good or not budget wise.
So if we're doing that during the preliminary design phase,
which is what we call it, you got time to
work through that well.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
And on your website in quotations. Open and honest construction
budgeting is part of our design build process, and that
part of it, for some people in your industry is
the most difficult part because it's like, let's we to
have an open and honest construction budgeting part conversation is

(18:36):
really really important because it look, if they want to
taj mahall, you can do that. You can't, no problem,
but let's make sure that you know what the taj
mahall is going to cost well.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
And the other problem is, I mean, over the last
four years, everything has just gotten so much more expensive,
so people's expectations about what budgets should be are mostly
outdated unfortunately. And you know, not only our materials more,
but the labor market is just more way more strapped
than it ever was.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
So do you find it harder to be in your
business today than it was fifteen years ago?

Speaker 3 (19:13):
For sure? Yeah, yeah, it definitely has many more challenges. Again,
it has to do with mostly a labor force that's
shrinking and not enough young people coming into it. But
it's it's a challenge that Narry understands, the NBA understands,

(19:35):
we all do, and we're trying to do things about
it at the high school level to start getting kids
back to hey, it's cool to be in the in
the trades, where for so many years it's just it
got drilled in their heads by us adults that it
wasn't you know, you got to go to college. So
that's that that narrative's changing, thankfully, but it's going to

(19:56):
take a while for our labor market to cover.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Yeah, there's also you know, this this labor shortage, and
it's caused a lot of other problems you got if
you ever know, there's a lot more, a lot more.
You see a lot more problems with contractors on TV
and and articles all the time, because is uh, anybody
can go into business right now. So everybody can start
a business and say that they can do stuff, and
then they they needed they develop a nightmare. And that's

(20:21):
what I like about Nary Nearynary screens them ahead of time.
They make sure that they're good contractors, they have the insurance.
They've been around for a while. You know, they're not
just a startup company. They know what they're doing. So
that's what was nice. When you go to these two
run model homes, you won't be you won't be disappointed
in these contractors. They're not going to take a down
payment and not find them later. Right, They return phone calls.
The reason why they're they're here on display is because

(20:43):
they are a good quality contract.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Yeah, the best of the best. They are. Tour of
the model homes coming up on May seventeenth and eighteenth,
and tickets are free, but you have to go on
their website get your tickets and so that you can
go to any of these and make sure when you're
doing this.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
They're going to say like, well, tickets all on me,
so don't worry about just get them up for free.
I'm paying a bill.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Yeah no, no, Bige will pay for years. Yeah, just
send him that invoice for the zero dollar on the tickets.
Make sure that that when you when you put your
plans together, that Pewaukee is one of the ones that
you're going to get to and get out there and
meet Dave Kelly and meet the people at to Mention
the Design Build Remodel and you can meet them and

(21:25):
possibly meet some of the owner. You can meet some
of the vendors, and any questions you have, he will
be there to answer. We're going to get your break.
Other side of the break will continue talking to Dave Calli.
This is the Creative Construction Wisconsin Home improvement Show on
Fox Sports ninety twenty in your iHeart Radio app. Welcome
back to the Creative Construction of Wisconsin home improvement show

(21:48):
on Fox Sports nine twenty in your iHeartRadio app. Coming
live from the Donovan and Jorgensen Heating and Coolian Studios,
largest employee owned HVAC company in the state of Wisconsin.
I might be given a lot outside. My co host,
he is the owner of Creative Construction of Wisconsin. He's
Bingo Emmons. Our special guest Dave Kelly. He's the owner
of Dimension Design Build Remodel. And we're talking a lot

(22:13):
about the Narry tour of our model homes coming up
May seventeenth and eighteen.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
We were also talking about fishing.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
We talked a lot about fishing, didn't we. That's your Yeah, Yeah, if.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
You want to talk fishing, we could have.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
He did for hours Muskie Basco Lake, Michigan, Kevin Trout.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
Yeah, and he actually he donates as to an organization
I belong to. He donates a fishing trip and it's
like the most sought prize that he has.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
Do you have your own boat? I do? And so
when you win, somebody wins that are you kind of
the captain? Oh?

Speaker 2 (22:42):
Yeah, well he has to be because he's driving the boat.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
He's driving.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
My older son's my second mate.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
So what is his name?

Speaker 3 (22:50):
Drew?

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Drew? I you know what, I I love the fact
that he is so fully invested in he loves to fish.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
Oh to the point where he's got a plan of
getting his degree in college and engineering, working for a
number of years to be able to buy his own
boat and become a fishing guide.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
That's awesome. Good for him. And look, we should be
talking home improvement. But I find this fascinating. What did
you bring him fishing when he was a little kid?
And do you think that that's where.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
His brought all my kids fishing when they were little kids.
He's just the one that really gravitated towards it.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
How did you get so involved in it.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
In the seventies, My grandpa took me fishing out in
Lake Michigan.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
It's our family tradition, generations, generations. I think it was
his grandpa, his kids. That's generals. Three generations right there
are fishing. That's four.

Speaker 1 (23:41):
What's the best time of year to go for you?

Speaker 3 (23:44):
We're just coming into it May, June, July. That's like
my yeah, that's my favorite time of year.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Yeah, by my lake there. It's like, you know, not
supposed to be fishing until May because apparently his closed
and his season's closed until then. But I guess once
May starts fill up.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
You know. I do a third show here on on
on Fox Sports sign twenty called Faith in His Zone
with a guy named Mark Rose, who is a he's
a professional bass fisherman. And I've seen him. I'm watching
I watched bass fishing a little bit more than I
do NASCAR, just see you know what. Sorry, sorry about that.
And and Mark Rose came on, and uh, I've seen

(24:23):
him like on the you know, Sunday the finals and
and there he is out there trying to trying to
win a tournament, and he was it was really interesting
to hear the passion that he has for bass fishing.
And and he does a lot of and he asked me,
do you fish? I said, I'm kind of a cane
pulling a bobber kind of guy. And he started laughing.
He goes, well, if I ever get to Wisconsin, I'm

(24:43):
going to put you in the boat. I'm going to
teach you. I'm going to show you how to fish,
and you'll fall in love with it. And it's interesting
because it's it's when when somebody gets that bug, like Drew,
like your son, it's something that he's going to do
for the rest of his life. Right.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
And we we actually fishing tournaments together too, and that's.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
You do fishing really, I'm sorry, fishing.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Tournaments you do yeah, on Lake Michigan. So that's that's
when we really, I mean, that's it's it's competitive, and
it's it's exciting, and it's uh yeah, it's I love
doing it.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
You know. You know what's going to happen If we
get Zach into fishing, right, yeah, then he's good to
buy his own boat. I should have his house to
something out of lake.

Speaker 2 (25:27):
Should have brought it's actual, had his own golf balls made,
believe it or not. I should have brought it by
the pack of it naturally they creative on it.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
That's that's awesome. Well, I uh, I got a golf story.
I'm going to start my high school show with about
something that happened on the golf course yesterday that I've
never seen in person, So we will do that. Hey,
on this sum we're talking a lot about the narrow
Tour of our model homes because that's uh coming up
on May seventeenth and eighteenth.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
Just one emphiaside. If you want to know who the
best or the best of your model is are, they're
right there on display showing me what they can do.

Speaker 1 (25:59):
An easy way to kind of pick your plan and
what homes you want to go to. If you go
to the website and or if you google twenty twenty
five tour of the model homes Neary Milwaukee, you can
take a look at at these and map out where
you want to go. Again, tickets are free, but if
you go online, go to that ticket tab and you

(26:21):
need to have your ticket in order to go to this.
But the tickets are free, so you need.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
To get a ticket to know where the locations are,
because I don't think they're going to give that up
unless you buy a ticket.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, because they don't want people coming to the houses
all right, that they don't know who it is.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
Yeah, on that map it shows you know, Pewaukee or
shows Delafield, but it does not give the addresses New Berlin.
So when you get that ticket, and again it's a
free ticket, and then if you go online, you can
read a paragraph or a story on each of these
and make sure that Pewaukee is is one of the areas.

(26:58):
When do you decide as a company that you want
to be involved, like do you know if have they
asked you about twenty twenty six yet? And do you know,
you know a year out if this is something you
want to do.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
Yeah, we do not know. Not a year out, I
would say you the final decision on whether you want
to be in it or not happens. Oh, I think
the cutoff date is February March. But obviously as a
company you got to plan way ahead. So when there's
there's projects, when when you start them that you know, hey,
this could be a good candidate, then you obviously have

(27:33):
to have a conversation with the homeowners make sure they're
okay with it. So you kind of got to plan
ahead as a company. But you don't actually have to
sign up, and it's with nary until.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Part of the timing too, because if you start a
drop product, somebody's thinking nine six months that you know
your whole allst that didn't happen in a weekend. No, Yeah,
well you're a time.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
When you made the decision or so, you know, ten
months ago to being the twenty twenty five. Now it's
three weeks away. Yeah, and you know that the sweat
beat started coming off the eyebrows to get this.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
Yeah, we didn't start this project till till early January,
so I knew it was going to be all of
a four month project. So I knew we were cutting
it to the wire.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Hey, one o the things we had talked to last
segment kind of about the process with Dimension and how
you guys do it, and we talked about that initial conversation.
One thing we didn't talk about is within that initial conversation,
you guys talk about the healthy home design and the
step beyond green to healthy part of what you guys

(28:31):
believe in the kind of the mission statement with with
your company. And I love the fact that that's part
of the initial conversation. I think it's important for people
to understand when they work with you and your team
and your company, that that's going to be part of
what we're talking about. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
Absolutely, because indoor air quality in our homes is a
very important thing. I mean, we spend so much time
in our homes, you know, we want to make sure
that what we're breathing is going to make us healthy,
not unhealthy, and draining attention to that.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
The water part, Like I learned so much from John
On when he came out to our house. It was
an incredible hour of learning things that I didn't know,
and my wife, who was very into that, asked some
really good questions and not only the air quality, but
but again the water quality is important as well. The

(29:25):
next step to working with your company the on site meeting,
either the Brookfield Design Studio or at somebody's home. Is
it is it better for you guys to have it
at their house? Do you think so that you can
kind of see what they're their their their their thought processes,
and what they're looking for.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
Almost always are our initial consultation is at their homes
because we always, i mean we want to talk about,
you know, what they're looking to do and make sure
that we're we have some good solutions and we're a
good fit to solve that.

Speaker 1 (29:57):
Hey, Dave, what part of that process for you personally? Right?
And I don't know how many people work for your company,
but what part of that process are you involved in?

Speaker 3 (30:08):
So I'm involved in almost the entire way. Uh.

Speaker 1 (30:13):
There.

Speaker 3 (30:13):
When when we get into the preliminary design phase, and
this is the point where people okay, they decide that
we're going to spend some money to do some drawings
and do some thorough budgeting, that's when we do a
handoff to our designer, Jonathan, who you've had here before.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
His daughter daughters were great on here a few weeks ago. Yep,
yeah here. I'm a big fan of his. Do you
know that I think I do? I I I think
the world of him, and I think his thought process
on things is as a servant leadership. Has that servant
leadership hard where it does. Thought process is not about

(30:51):
how much money can I bring my company? His thought
processes how can I how can I help you? Yes?
And how can in the world?

Speaker 3 (30:58):
I mean, he he really you know, with the step
Beyond Green Healthy initiative, he wants to He is a
help other people kind of guy.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
So yes, I mess with him face to face, but
behind his back, I think the world of this guy.
Do you know When we started the Home Improved show,
my wife and I were living on eighty eighth in Townsend,
and I was the one setting up trying to find
guests to come in. A really good friend of his
lift Kitty corner and he pulled up in his truck
and I walked over and introduced myself and asked him

(31:29):
to come on my show. And I think he thought
I was a crazy person, and he just kind of
shook his head and kept walking. And then we got
to know each other, and I don't think he thinks
of a crazy person. But boy, I just think that
his heart is in the really in the right spot.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
It absolutely is. That's why him and I hitched hitched
our trailers to each other, oh seven eight years ago.
Now as a design.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
Build team and that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
But I still stay involved, you know, during it, so
you know, I mean as the construction guy and the
numbers guy. You know, sometimes I got to talk people
off the ledge and you know a little bit and
you know, tell them to reel back. What I mean,
people get big eyes and you know, they.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
These shows that we watch on TV and I ask
this every week, is that good for your business or bad? Oh? Both?

Speaker 3 (32:19):
Really? You know, it's it's great for ideas, but they're
always so unrealistic about what job costs are.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
So it's it's both. So you know, well, how much
work do you do in looking at some of the
things that are going to be happening in twenty twenty
six some of the trends that might be out west
or out east right now that are going to make
its way. I don't think like Shay Carpeting's coming back anytime,

(32:48):
so I.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
Don't think so either. You know. As far as the
design side, I that's not me personally, that's not my focus.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
I got an architecture degree in college, but design is
not where I shine. I mean, I I know a
good amount of it. But the construction aspect of it
is what I pay attention to. And making sure that
we're doing things the right way, constructing them the right way,

(33:17):
that's more what I pay attention to. And there's always
you know, new ways to do things, better way to
do things. So that's where my focus is. I let
Jonathan worry about the colors and the trends and all
that for sure, so you stick to my lane.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Hey, that a boy. That a boy. I bet if
Jonathan's listening, he's going to record that and played for
you one time when you come out of your life.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
Oh no, but he's he's up putting a peer in
his his dad's lake properties. So I know he's not listening.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
So we'll send him a copy. Great, send them a copy. Hey,
when you get to the construction phase part of it,
So are you? Are you? Basically yeah, I'm the guy.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
You're the guy I'm I'm involved in, you know, as
the project manager and owner of the company. So how
much we are a smaller company experience, but we bring
the big kind of the big company expertise.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
How much is communication important? And wondering how you can
jog if you've got three, two or three projects going
on at the same time. I could not. I would
struggle with that right If I have too many, too
many things I'm juggling. Sometimes I shut down. It's like
I need to get one, finish it and then get

(34:30):
to the next one. But I think that this is
a gift to be able to do that. The communication
part of what you do has got to be vital.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
It's the biggest part of it actually, because you have
to communicate well with not only the homeowner but everybody
on your team. And when we're doing projects like this,
I mean there can be fifteen plus different companies, maybe
maybe twenty, and there could be one hundred plus different
people working on this one project and can communication with

(35:01):
all of them at all times and the homeowner, yes,
So we're in the center of all that. We're the
conductors of it. So you know, we communication is the
most important thing.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Man, And to be able to meet him. Look, if
you go to the Turromodel Homes for Nary Milwaukee again
two days May seventeenth and eighteenth, and if you go
on their website, make sure that you circle the Pewaukee
location and go out and talk to Dave. When you
listen to him, and when I ask about the communication side,

(35:36):
because I agree with him, I think that that's the
most important part, so that the homeowner understands what's going
to happen today, tomorrow, this week, next week, and the
whole kind of scope of what this project is going
to be like. To be able to have somebody like
Dave be that point person knowing that Jonathan is on
the team for me personally would put me in a

(35:59):
real strong on comfort zone. But to be able to
have that conversation with David person just go out and
see their work and and and a project that isn't
quite done yet but he's really proud of. We had
a conversation before we started the show today and if
you saw the smile on his face with this whole
house remodel that they're doing in Pewaukee, he wants you

(36:21):
to come out and see this. And and Bingo said, look,
these guys want to break about their work they do.
That's a good thing that you know. You don't always
want to be bragging about yourself on things, but.

Speaker 2 (36:31):
You're picking back it up. Why we do this because
we're proud of what we do. That's why we do this.

Speaker 1 (36:35):
One hundred yeah, I agree with that. So make sure
when you get get your ticket, it'll give you the location.
Go to Nary Milwaukee dot org. And when you're going
through these you'll be able to look. One is an
office space and I'm looking at it. It's beautiful, right,
it's Excel Custom Contractors did a great job. It's a
first floor remodel. So whatever you're looking to do, if

(36:58):
it's a full house, boy, there's a couple of options
for you, and you can go and take a look
at some of these j J contractors.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
I got to answer this question because I just got texted.
I had a couple couple of things happened like this,
do you know a good basement contractor? And then another
one is, uh, do you guys offer financing? For some reason,
I'm getting that question.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
We have dabbled with offering that, but we haven't taken
taken the full leap to doing.

Speaker 2 (37:27):
That because I think most people just get a he looger.

Speaker 1 (37:30):
Yeah, we certainly had somebody in last week.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Yes, I said, that's that's what That's why I text him.
Now he calls call bell bank?

Speaker 1 (37:38):
What I call bell bank?

Speaker 2 (37:39):
Yes, that says, you know, call bell bank because they
handle it because companies can't. You know, we're not you know,
we're not banks. You know we do some finance with people, yes,
because of oerships.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
Speaking of staying in our lanes, right, stay in our
lanes if you want to take it some of Uh,
take a look at some of the projects and some
of the work that that Dave Kelly and that team
at mentioned design to build roommodel. You can go on
their website. It's to mention that the DBR dot com
and look at the remodeling, the des.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
Get promotion of them. So how much how much of
an addition do you got to have to get a
trip on your boat? I'm just.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
I should show alny of people out all the time.
And I love taking people out, especially when they bring
their kids. It's not a big boat. I've had effect
one of our nearing members, Randy, he actually won the
Wahi trip years ago, which I was like, really, I
donate something to Wahi and a guy wins bring his

(38:44):
girlfriend and kids and four people. And my note that
my flyer said two people, so he uh he he
kind of over exceeded the capacity. So my boat isn't
It's a twenty with boat, so it's not small. It's
big enough to be out there, but it's not huge either.
So but yeah, happy to take anybody out. I love

(39:07):
taking people out, and no, you don't have to buy
an addition project from us for me to do that.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
Well, go on their website, look at somebody, look at
the gallery. The pictures are beautiful. Lower level additions, new homes, bathrooms, kitchens,
the whole house. Take a look at the work that
Dave Kelly does and then go meet him. Get out
to the Naary Turvver Model Homes again May seventeenth and eighteenth.
If you go on their website, you got to get

(39:33):
the ticket to get the address of each of these homes,
but you get a chance to meet him in person.
Jonathan will be there as well for a lil while.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
I'm not sure. He said something about you might have
a dart tournament, but I think Mike McGivern might be
there because he lives right down the road. Right down
the road. I'm sure he's going to have my wife.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
Terry got a basement, show his wife the basement.

Speaker 3 (39:56):
Yeah, that's the only part of the house we didn't
do anything with was the basement.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
Anytime that weather comes, my wife says, she's like, build
me a basement. Why did you make us move to
this kind of with no basement? So every week Bingo
reminds her to mess with me on the basement thing.
We're going to get to a break. Other side of
the break, we'll continue our conversation with Dave Kelly. This
is the creative Construction, Wisconsin home improvement show on Fox

(40:21):
Sports nigned twenty in your iHeart Radio App. Welcome back
to the Creative Construction of Wisconsin Homiprove but John Fox
Sports ninety twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Coming live from
the Donovan and Jorgensen Heating and Cooling Studios. I'm Mike
McGivern alongside Bingo Emmons from Creative Construction of Wisconsin and

(40:42):
Dave Kelly. You want to talk more phishing, I should
keep him for my high school fishing show if I
ever do one of those. You know the owner of
Dimension Design Build Remodel, and I can tell you this
on your website. I love the gallery. That's my favorite part.
There's so many really good pictures up there. And the
work that you guys do. You can't be really proud

(41:03):
of the work that that that you do. And I
asked you during the break if you can just go
to an open house and you know the work that
if you guys didn't do the work and just kind
of enjoy it and sit back and maybe go watch
a Packer game and cook out. Or are you looking
at the construction of any of the time.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
Yeah, it might dries my wife a little nuts sometimes,
but yeah, I can't. I can't. I cannot look at
any construction details in the house and not Nitpicket. So
but that's a good thing because we do that to
our own work.

Speaker 1 (41:35):
Hey, so you're a Milwaukee Marquette hilltop.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
I am.

Speaker 1 (41:39):
Paul Nolach was there when you were? Oh yeah, yeah.
I tell you a quick story about him. I coached
against him. I was at Dominican, and my first time
I coached against him, he got really mad at me
for something, and I thought, oh, I don't like this guy.
Guess what. I then got a chance to meet his daughter,

(41:59):
Paul and his grandson Michael at the wy taking shots
when he was in grade school and we were doing
a Packer kids Clay. I worked for a sports marketing company.
I invited Michael and I said, Paul, if you want
to bring him because you're a big Packer fan. And
he called me and said, would it be okay if
I came up with my grandfather and great And then

(42:20):
I got a chance to talk to coach Noac and man,
I said, coach, how do you run this press like
we can't beat it? And I don't understand. He goes,
what are you doing Saturday? Come to my house. I'll
show you. He moved furniture in his home in Brookfield
so that he could show me the drills he was doing.
I said, coach, I'm coaching against you, Goes, I don't care.
You're not beating us, and he just laughed and it

(42:43):
was awesome. Did you know when you are a Marquette
that this was going to be your path? Yes?

Speaker 3 (42:48):
I did, well, so I took all They offered some
architectural drafting classes at Marquette, so architecture was always on
my mind, and then I went to UWM got my
architecture degree. But the day I graduated and I realized
that I don't want to sit at a drafting table

(43:09):
for the rest of my life, and that's largely what
architects do. It's and I needed to I'm an outdoors guy,
so I fell into My first job was with Marcus
Corporation back in the day as a construction project manager,
so that grew into be what I wanted to do

(43:30):
the rest of my life. So construction project management because
we get to be in the office but also go
out of the office on construction sites, and I love
that balance.

Speaker 1 (43:42):
Do you think any of the kids will get involved
with your company, and as well, Ris Bingo, We've had
this conversation his Sam didn't Zach didn't you know? They
didn't and then they came back maybe.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
I mean, you know, so my older son's going to engineering,
and my my middle also my other son, he is
going to be probably going into the trades. My daughter
not sure yet, but I think there's there's a good possibility.
But you know, I don't I don't want to push
anything on my kids.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
So but if they want to come out and hang
out with you on the job, that's okay with you.

Speaker 3 (44:17):
I've brought them on job sites before.

Speaker 1 (44:20):
Yeah, you know, you tell Drew, hey, we're going fishing
and oh but we got to stop at this job
site before we've actually done that. Yeah. That that's awfully smart. Guys.
This this Nary show coming up. I can tell you
the two of our model homes May seventeenth and eighteenth,
various locations. Go on their website Nary Milwaukee dot or

(44:40):
go to the events page twenty twenty five Tour Remodel Homes.
Tickets are free. A number of different places to go see.
Make sure you circle the Pewaukee do that and go
out and meet Dave and understand excuse me and Mike. Yeah, yeah, David,
and you're.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Gonna yeah, those two you've got a conflict today because
you've got NHRI I Nationals or in Illinois that weekend.
You're not gonna be like.

Speaker 1 (45:04):
Over Oh that's right, yeah, because I'm so into NASCAR
and drag racing. That's what that one is. I'll be
with you, David. I'm sorry, Bengo. I'd love to be
able to go with you. I got to hang out
with my friend Dave Kelly. Hey, guys, thank you very
much again. Go to Narry Milwaukee and and you got
to get free tickets to get the addresses, and I

(45:24):
think that's really important. But you know Sussex and Pewaukee
and when you look, you'll be able to do in
two days, you'll be able to get to most of
those and I would highly recommend that. And when you do,
when you get a chance to talk to Dave and
his team, you'll get a really good idea as to
why this company is doing so well. Guys, have a
good Weekend's good to see you, Thank.

Speaker 3 (45:46):
You, Good to see you, guys.

Speaker 2 (45:47):
You bet nice to see you and then I'll see
you in two weeks.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
You've got it.

Speaker 2 (45:51):
Tiller Show next week, Yeah you bet. Best show ever.

Speaker 1 (45:54):
