down a roll right, I'm going like forty miles an hour,

so sweet when you see them down the road and

It was really good. I'm still kind of full, you know.
Maybe Ale eat By Tuesday, but it was one. Yeah,
we had to do double things, giving both size of
our family, and we had to you know, I had
to do my job. I'd ease much as it possibly could.

That was your job. Do you get a nap in?

And no, we just go from one to another one.
We made me sure that we had to make that
day really nice and long.

Yeah, we you know what we we hosted this year
for the first time, and we did it. My wife
and I hosted, but we did it at my daughter's house.

And how does that works?

Then? Yeah, we bring all the food and she Katie
has more space and a couple of rooms with packer
games going on and badger.

So how do you keep it warming away?

My wife they figured all that out. I don't know.
I just got it and delivered it and it was
nice and warm, and yeah, it was very good. It
was very good. And we had I don't know twenty
some people there and my brother John was there and
sister Colleen, sister Maureen and siblings and partners and that
was great.

How was John doing? He was the famous one of
the family.

I don't know if he's our favorite guest, but I've
known Josh for a while now. Josh Pastrick from a

Oh, not too bad. I'm glad to be here with you.

I was how was Thanksgiving for you?

This was good for me? I only went to one
house though, so bingle ahead me beat.

Yeah, you could have came by us. We had enough
food we had left. I have a pot pie waiting
for me when I get off the air today.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I think I think the email went to spam, so
I think, yeah.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I would invite you for
the work that you did personally, and you were with
a different company. We don't need to name it. But
what the work you did personally at the condo project
where I'm at, what I thank you about is the
most is I don't think that the guys followed their

directions correctly, and within twenty four hours you had those
guys back out. And Sarah, who was the president of
our kind of association, was very thankful for you because,
you know, she said, look, they didn't do it exactly
how we asked them to do it, and they said, well,
call Josh, and I think she called you, and literally

it was in the afternoon. The next morning, those guys
were out there and they fixed it to exactly how
you wanted it. So thank you.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
No, I'm glad how you brought that up. That's how.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
We and the new company here, that's how we do business.
We do business the way you guys wanted. If something
comes up, or you guys want something that you don't know,
if someone does, just ask or tell us and make
sure you tell us orderly so we get there on
time and we make sure that we could fix it.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah. I have a lot of friends and a lot
of recommendations. And what I do is when I recommend somebody,
I don't you know, it isn't just like they're just
the cheapest I passed and all that kind. It is
holly handle problems because there every there is problems that
happened and how people handle problems. Even with our company,
and we get a problem, you know, we caught a
call back, something happens, we did a job ten years ago,
a little chunk for love. How do you handle it?
And how you handle the problem is what makes you

the better company.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Well here's and Josh, I got to give you credit
for this. At that condo project, there was a different
board than we have now and we just we just
voted on the board a couple of weeks ago and
and the question was do we repair this thing or
do we replace it? And there was you know, when

you have five people on the board, there are three
people actually two people that thought one way and two
people have thought another way, and one person who's like,
I don't care whatever, how are you going to do it?
But the idea of replacing it to repairing it is
that the question that you get the most.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Yeah, And to us, we are more of a here's
the repair costs, here's replacement, Cause what's best for you
and your budget at the moment. Because a repair, no
matter how good you are repairing something, it's a band
aid at best. So it's it's gonna eventually fall apart
within the next two one to five years, depending on
what the repair is. Replacing it's always the best option,

(05:16):
but sometimes you can't afford it right. Sometimes you're in
a season of life where you just put in your
water heater went out at the same time that you
needed to replace all your gas.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Lying everything bad happens in threes, then that's right, I'm
telling you. It just seems to do that for sure.
And you know what, at our house, and in fact,
I left zakat text I got to get back with him.
The mirror in my wife's bathroom. Have no idea how
or why. All of a sudden crack down the bottom,

and I said, oh, that's going and by you know,
three hours later, it had gone all the way to
the top. And same day the lights in my office
went out. And we're waiting to see what the third
one is, because it's coming. These bad things are happening.

But the bad things happened in threes. What what was
interesting to me being kind of a small part of
that process because it kind of brought you into to
give us a quote. Was the that the conversations between
replace and repair. And for me, it's like, look, let's

just bite the bullet and replace it. And and and
Sarah I was was in my camp and got voted
down and they said, no, let's let's repair it. Well,
the problem with that is two years from now, we're
going to have to have you come back out and replace.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
It, right.

And then you know, the big thing with with me
and and especially with Rock River, now, we're going to
make sure that you have the options if you want
to repair a replacement. We're going to give you both
options and give you and cons and you make a decision.

So give me the background on Rock River. Who else
is there with you? And yeah, I know they they
just opened in Maine. I know it's hard to start
to brand a company. You guys are located in Jamesville,
but you you're in this area all the time.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Yeah, so I live close to the area I live.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
I'm out of Burlington, so obviously something near my house
is always going to be nice as well. But having
a company like Rock River Roofing and exteriors. We just
added the end exteriors and that's going to be on
the new website. And so because we want everybody to
know we don't just do roofing. And there's just two
of us. One handles the production side, I handle the

customer and the sales and marketing side.

How long you've been in this business.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
I've been in this industry for thirteen.

Years, okay, and the end the other guy.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Coming up on a decade.

He's a little younger than me.

So the idea of starting, look, starting new companies always
is like, you know, so sleepless nights and things like that.
He's been in a long time. You've been in a
long time. So when you guys come.

Away, he's one of those guys too. He's a hands
on guy because I know Kevin.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Was Kevin's last name, Kevin Kevin, all right, I got
Kevin right here. Kevin has been added a long time.
And you said, look, he's a go get it right.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah, And he's a kind of person like if youdat
rubber roof, he's the guy that's up there repairing the
rubber roof. He's not like he's going to go send
somebody else to do it. So he's one of those guys.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
So he's been in all aspects of the business.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Yeah, actually a credit to him. He's been on the
production side, and he's more hands on. I've only been
in the never shut up and talked carry and he's been.

On you and are like twins peal you can host
your own home improvement show because trust me, I just
to call Bingo and call Zach. That's that's my's.

Weird as well. I didn't want to bring it up.
I remember the last time he worked on a mirror.

I do. I still have to anyway, thanks for bringing
that up. Yeah, you know what, that's why I called
Zack first this time. Or I send him a text
for having her back from him. So tell that boy
to reply to my text messages. He when my wife calls,
he picks me up.

I'm gonna I'm going to see him a little wile
later because we're doing something with my doing something with
my daughter, my daughter because comparently we can't have enough thanksgivings.
We got to have as many as he possibly can.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Yeah, if they have extra turkey, Josh and.

The farm, it's gonna be at the farm after a yeah,
he said, he said, he said to me, you said
me talking to Sam. He's like, you always telling Sam's
the farm. Because here was donkeys in the background, screening
and stuff.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
That wasn't a conversation. That was the first conversation I've
ever was saying.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
And all of a sudden, the donkey's going off in
the background like an alarm clock, and I'm like, what
is that?

Speaker 1 (09:43):
What is that? Yeah, she I have no interest in
meeting the big horse and the little one.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
I'm sure I was taking a picture because I was.
I was taking a picture of her barn right, and
all of a sudden, two inches from my face, the
brown horse was like right here.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Hi, Yeah, I mean versus and I, for some reason,
don't get along all that well.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Well, and especially that Baylor horse. You gotta watch on
it like awakee tool. You set it down, he'll take
it to the pastor and you never see it again.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
It just if you're gone.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
He just takes it.

He's got a side business in the corner.

I used to work for a guy who lived out
in Heartland, and he had a lot. He had he
had a bunch of horses, and he had a dog
and and all of a sudden on their back porch,
he would see things. He's like, where did this come from?
And all of a sudden the dog comes running up
with a purse from the neighbor. The dog would go
and just steal stuff and bring it back, and he
and the neighbor got real mad, like I didn't know

where this candle was, Like, I thought I was losing
my mind. And the dog somehow would get into their porch,
take stuff off the porch and bring it home, and
I thought, oh.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
At least that's a story.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
That's yeah, that's what he and he was sticking with it.
I don't know why he had that purse. Hey, quick
question with with ropes and and when when people heard
that you were coming on, I get questions how long
does a roof last nowadays? So if you guys put
it in a new roof, what is your a warranty
and what is the idea and how long they're going

(11:12):
to last?

Speaker 4 (11:12):
So there's a two part answer to this. So if
you're so, we as being as young as we are,
we are preferred contractors to all the roofing Malarkey, gaf
LP and James Hardy already because of the knowledge we
bring into the industry is our experience. But that preferred
contractor means more than you think because that gets you

(11:33):
access and that they kind of tell you. You get
access to reps, and the reps then tell you what
to put on. Okay, So once you put it on
right and use the right sub materials. See, a roof
it can only last twenty five years on the worst materials,
maybe ten to fifteen. But if you put the right
synthetic underlayment, the right ice and water shield, the right venting,
that can last up to fifty years. And a lot

(11:55):
of these roofs now have fifty year extended warrants on
the next post worm.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah. Well, because well, like.

Speaker 4 (12:00):
A malarkey with an SBS, it can handle up the
two inch hail okay, where it's not going to really
do anything.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Well because you know the whole hailstorm. So how's a hailstorm?
Because you know, you look at the roof and let's
perfectly get fine, but what's the Naxell's granules off? And
the UV raise gets at the tarred and that's what
causes an end quick. That's why insurance companies like well
I ontil you got a new roof, we're not gonna
ensure you.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
That's why there's a Class four roof discount. So that's
what that's that SBS is good for.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
Is the Class four Can do you guys work throughout
the winter?

Speaker 4 (12:31):
Yeah, because malarkey, because of the material quality, it could
actually be installed as low as thirty degrees instead of
forty like the other roofs.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
So there are I mean, you can look if we
get as much snow as they're saying, I.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Can't put it on today. It's it's a it's a
little wet.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
So we always get phone calls in this kind of
weather too, say hey, yeah, we got this chimney and
needs you just stuck off? He could have called lest week.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yeah, well with with you guys, you're getting then anytime soon,
right with that kind of stuff, So don't remember, we
don't want Sam mad at us, So don't say, hey.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
We're getting caught up on inside though, because yeah, we've
been doing a lot of insights. So we're doing good
because we've been inside ever since. Stuff that we're saying,
you had that little damp August, Yeah, got a little
damp out. Yeah, we've been really busy for that. So
we got a lot of stuff going inside, and we're
getting caught up.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
When you say getting caught up, if somebody calls Creative
Construction of Wisconsin on Monday and says Sam, I heard
bingo on and your guys are getting caught up. Can
we get in in two weeks?

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yeah, we can probably get some stuff now. I mean
we're actually we've been going inside for a while now
because we were so worried about we're gonna be get jammed, right,
you know, because we have people we promise I have
done by Christmas and stuff. So we've been really hitting stuff.
So we're doing good inside. So yeah, we could use
some stuff inside. We can get, we can get, we
can get you no good.

Speaker 1 (13:47):

I had to go back in my memory because I
went past. There's so much when we lived on that
side of town, and it looks it's it's a beautiful,
beautiful building.

Yeah, and you see what colored sand is. I wasn't
telling him where he got the sand from, but he said.

Yeah, right down Bradford Beach. They went down and took it.

Yeah, that's all he wanted.

Man, Hey, Josh, what the most common roofing materials that
you guys use? I mean ashphalt, the right shingles. Uh.
Do you guys do woodshakes as well?

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Well, we'll do almost anything if someone asked us, but
our focus is more on asphalt and metal. That's kind
of what we focus on asphalt for now, being like
if you use the right underlay material that fifty years
is kind of impressive. Where the actual manufacturer warranties at
for fifty years, not us, So they say, if you
put the right materials underneath, then this what's gonna last

(14:56):
fifty years. But there's nothing like metal, Like metal is
not to go anywhere that'll last like two lifetimes.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
There's like there's more and more people doing that now.
And sometimes the metal roofs look like regular roofs.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
And there's there's new underlamit that we found that's really nice.
It's it's thicker, so it he's to prevent against that
sound that people don't like when the rain hits it,
and you don't have to put it on would anymore.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
You can just lay it right on the Yet not
a gazillion people that put on their phone where they
have a fan or the sound of rain, and you
know I have those, right, put your sound on, my
wife says, and a lot of it at times is
that the sound of rain hitting a metal roof.

And that's just like I if you put it on
your phone right now, I'd probably take a nap. Yeah,
So there are some people that probably like that.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
I was out and I think Jefferson. There is a
lady that she had she had a rough don and
I'm there because whatever she's so she's having a metal
roof put on right. Yeah, so she said, I'm putting
his insulation on. That's personing. I said, man, love that song.
Why won't you keep it? And she goes, well, I
want to be a control of sound. I don't want
to just say it's her point the volume of that,

And she says, yeah, okay, yeah, because I'll be having
a Christmas party or I'll be have a Birthday party
and be raining and you can't hear yourself. Think that's
what that's That was her version of it.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Hey, does that a fact used to years ago that
we had this conversation on this show that it affected
sell service in houses. Yeah, do you don't find that anymore?

Speaker 2 (16:30):

I'm not why didn't go through a big back when
we have three G phones and four G phones because
of the waves are really big. Remember we had John Scolviack,
You'll tell you what. The five G phones they get
through that stuff because there was a while when if
you had a if you have three G phone, you
couldn't get through plaster walls. So that was kind of
like that was a big drywall selling point. Hey you
got to put a drywall. You don't want plaster because
you can't. It doesn't work. But the five G phones

that goes through that ghost I.

Always compared to like you used to not be able
to make calls out of your work. That's why all
works had to have a landline. And now you can
call out of your buildings. Yeah, it's the same kind
of effect.

So most people don't have landlines anymore. I'm just kidding.
We get up until when we moved to Milwaukee, and
I'm telling you we have idea.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
We had one for a fax machine that believe or not.
We still got a fax machine a couple. Every once
in a while you get the customers or material companies, they
want a fax machine. We don't have the curly cue anymore.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
But we that you missed for two weeks because you
don't look at the fax machine.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Well, because everyone say there's no paper because everyone saw
our rings. I'm like, how do you answer it? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Man, I remember like if you have somebody's phone, but
it goes to the facts and you keep calling and there,
and then finally they call me. They go, look, would
you quit check your number? It keeps beeping over here
and people would be yelling at me all the time.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
They always thought that was gonna be so big.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Everyone watched the sixties, you know the new home as
thirty fax machining.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
Right, Yeah, not so much anymore for sure. Hey, how
long does and you guys do commercial and you're gonna
do commercial and residential.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
We do commercial residential, and then we have a new
built as well. If you need someone to like, if
you want to choose us to put up your siding
of your new home and stuff like that, we can
come into that.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
And when you when you said Rock River roofing and exterior. Yes,
so when you say that, what's the difference between just
the roofings, you guys do siding.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
Yeah, well yeah, that's LP and Hardy. We're prefer contractors
with them. So we do siding. We do roofing, siding, windows,
you do win butter soffit, facia and decks.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Well, they're actually doing windows for us up in Surewood.
I mean they're working in the neighborhood. We have somebody
who wants a special order, getting saving to say to
company it's a pilla. Okay, right, nobody can find it.
I got a hold of Josh. I said, yeah, we
can get it. I mean, so actually he's going to do.

Their job perfect. So windows man, Yeah, I think you
need to put exteriors on there. And then when you
update the website. At this point, you can go to

same website. But I know you guys are updating Rock
River Roofing dot com and and they're located in Jamesville.
But understand that Josh lives in Burlington and he's up

in this area. They're doing a job in Shorewood for Bingo,
So don't let their where their their main office in Janeville.
It's forty five minutes, so it's not a big deal.
But understand that they do work in this area. And uh,
I've had experience working with Josh, and I was very
pleased with the way he handled We had a small

issue and they handled it within twenty four hours and
got it done. And uh, it's good to know that
that he is working now with with a company that
it's a young, aggressive company and and they're gonna they're
going to ask to earn your business. I mean, that's
that's what this whole, this whole industry has to do.
But when you're a newer, newer company and you're out there,

you know, trying to trying to get as much business
to keep these the lights on. These these are guys
that have been in the industry a long time. They'll

Oh? It was during probably, yeah, I got Oh boy,
look at the size of these knuckles. You think it's
because I work on my rough No, not at all. Hey,
I got a quick question for you. Could you explain flashing?
And uh, what is roof?

Speaker 3 (21:07):
This is a public radio station. You're not talking about it,
I know.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
And it puts your shirt back on. Josh Roof flashing
and does my roof need it?

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Always?

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Yeah, your roof needs flashing. The number one when someone
calls and says we have a leak on a roof,
the first thing a good riffer does is look at
all the flashing because somehow it penetrated. Because flashing stops
the penetration. Because anytime like so, let's say you have
a dormer and your roof inside and meat, there's a
gap there. So the flashing is just to cover the hole.

(21:40):
So it's basically like aluminum tape that make sure that
you cover the hole.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
It's got to be done right, because if it's not
done right, then guess what you got to call us?

Speaker 1 (21:49):
You got to Yeah, it's the entire roof require flashing.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
No, just the worthy where it meats. So like when
a roof meets a wall or a drip edge is
considered a flash that covers the wood at the edge,
on top of the gutter or that's required all the
way through.

Speaker 3 (22:05):
When you have a roof, when you have a roof down,
And what they do is I try to reuse the
old flashing, especially chimney flashings and stuff. And that's what
usually keeps us busy.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
When when when we were again living in a condo,
Now we don't have to deal with some of these issues. No, no,
And this next question, I used to I had a
roof rack, and so when we're on eighty eighth street,
because when I'm a kid, you know, you love to
see all the icicles, but as a homeowner, not so much.

(22:37):
And so I would I would rake the snow off
my roof, and that seemed to help. Do you recommend
that for people?

Speaker 4 (22:45):
No, not necessarily because basically, you know how like the
pretty roofs that have the colors, the colors are really
colored rocks. So when you're hitting it with a metal rake,
you're taking the rocks off that are actually preventing the
sun from meeting the asphalt.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
Ate what you're doing, Yeah, always tell you, Yeah, when
you do a takeoff, I leave like leave the last half.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
In right, and that's and and I turn that take
a big.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Metal raank and you turn upside down. You know that
you don't see you don't think up to an ice
scraper and knock that ice off of chisel chisel at all?

Speaker 1 (23:12):
You know. Well, I can tell you this that we
had cracks in in our living room because of of
and it was the ice dams, and so we got
the we got the gutter guard that didn't really work
there there. I don't know if we got the correct
gutter guard to be honest with you, but some kind
of product.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
Yeah, the gutter guards don't. I mean they prevent against
leaves from coming in. And the only way that prevents
so when guarters get too full and you don't clean
out your gutters out, that'll do ice because the water
hasn't drained and then freezes. But if you don't have
ice and water shield going three to six feet up,
that's when the icicles form and it has to be
insulated like attic insulation. Everybody says that's going to prevent it.

(23:52):
Attic insulation is only good if you have good venting.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
The problem with UH with ice and water shield is
is a ripper will say, well cold only allows two
feet up and pass the interior of a wall like
your wall or something else new feet. You want to
get the company it goes to xtra roll because of
the ice water daming. You won't have ice water dam
pomp if you have that proper ice and water shield
installed it because it just it won't get that far up.

Speaker 1 (24:16):
It's interesting with the storm that's coming today, what does
that do to a guy like you and your business.

Speaker 4 (24:23):
Well, to us, it's good like winters and really hot
summers kind of expose the problems. So if you're having
problems with something, whether it's windows and it's freezing on
the inside, or you're you're really cold for some reason
on the upper level of your home, it's it's telling
us something. So usually that's when we ask questions at
the beginning. But going back to your ice and water

(24:44):
shield and Bingo's point, read the contract. If they don't
tell you how much ice and water shield they're putting
on the contract, then you're not with a company that's
confident in what they're doing. What are they doing that
they didn't want to tell you about. So our contract
is every piece of what everything's going to be, so
you know exactly what going on.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
Well here here's and getting back to the experience that
I had with you at our condo, what what I
was in I was in those meetings. What I was
most impressed with was the non pressure part of it
that you were not. You were not saying, look the
sky's falling, the sky the sky's falling. You got to
get a brand new one. You gotta get it done now.

(25:21):
It was the questions that they had and it wasn't
like you were not getting your car to leave until
somebody signed a contract. And I've and I look, I
heard those guys.

Speaker 3 (25:29):
Yeah, I can hold this press for ten days. They
do that twenty four hours.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
That was the guy that when you helped my friend,
it was you have you got to sign it, but
you have a twenty four hour out. But I'm not.
The guy wouldn't leave. He would not leave. By the
time he got out of her driveway. She had called
me and she was crying. And then the next day
I was coming here and I told Bengo about it,

(25:55):
and he goes, I'll just go Sere, I'll take care
of it, and so we I had her cancel it.
I mean, I don't think the guy got out of
her neighborhood. When she called and I said, look, you
want me to call him and cancel, she was not
just afraid he's going to turn around to come back. Yeah,
so let me let him get away for a little while.
But that, I mean, that shouldn't happen. Her husband wasn't
there and this guy was not leaving her kitchen until

(26:16):
he got it signed. And what I was impressed with
with you is you weren't saying, hey, listen, you have
to go with us. And here's why. What you were
doing is given options and then saying, look, if you
decide you want to go with us, I think that's
a really good decision. But you guys make the.

Speaker 4 (26:33):
Decision well as far as I say, it's your house,
So if you want a pink, purple, blue house, we
might not have it. And stop, we will green will,
we will put it on because it's your home. I'm
not the one driving to it every day. You are,
like the quality of work is where we put our stamp,
not the color or the style.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
It's you. It's your home.

Speaker 4 (26:56):
So you know, home is one of the three basic needs,
food and shelter. So it gets personal with people. And
I feel that that pressure is just too much. You know,
gonna You're gonna win jobs by being genuine and showing
people that this is what these are your options. We're
gonna do it right. Which one do you want? Do

(27:17):
you mind if I call you next week you know
what I mean while you're thinking of it? Or do
you mind if I call you in a couple of
days just to see how you do it. And when
I make that phone call too, it's like, hey, how
are you thinking? Oh, I think that I think we
need a couple more days. The thing perfect was that
you want to call you Friday. Yeah, you know what
I mean. That's not you don't feel like I'm sitting
there in your home making it.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
And when you leave an appointment, you know that by
the time you get out of that neighborhood, people are
gonna have four more questions. You're okay with them calling
you right away and going hey, as it's fresh in
my mind. One thing I forgot to ask you is this,
especially when you're dealing with the kind of board right now,
You've got five people that have questions and you're comfortable

(27:56):
with all of that.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
Yeah, that's why my cell phone's right on my business card,
so that you could call me at any time and
go around the office and just call me directly. Like
if I'm in an appointment, I'm not going to pick up,
but I'll shore call you back right when I get out.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
Uh, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna plaster the world
and it happens all the time because people are most
people don't know what we do because there's not TV
shows or you know, there's YouTube videos, but people don't
know exactly what we're doing. So like this, and now
we say, yeah, call or email any questions, you know,
and then it looks like I'm answering tennic. It's actually
Sam answer. I couldn't keep up to all his questions,

(28:30):
so say, if Sam will take care of it, WELLS
should do it? Shall comment pay? This person was wondering,
you know, did I include the brick bider fireplace. Yeah,
it was all the bricks. And then they say what
about the brick bider ground, Yes, all the bricks, all
of it. Yeah, but that's what I mean. They're like, hey,
what about this one?

Speaker 1 (28:42):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (28:42):
That one too.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Hey, is there is there an expense to have you
guys come out and and do a just an inspection
on somebody's roof.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
No, we don't charge for that. We do free inspections
and free estimates.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
Okay, And and what's the timing on it?

Speaker 2 (28:57):
Now?

Speaker 1 (28:58):
How busy are you guys? And if somebody gives you
guys a call on Monday, depending on obviously on the weather.
But if in a normal week, if somebody calls you
on Monday, when's the first time do you think you
can get out and see them?

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Well? Were you?

Speaker 4 (29:13):
So there's usually gaps in our schedule because we're not
doing that pressure. We can get in and out and
do what we need to do with pressure. So we
can usually get out there within a couple of days. Okay,
only because because we're not sitting and trying to get
you to give us our business for three hours and
we're getting out within forty five minutes to an hour.
It gives us a little more flexibility too, as long
as we're in the area. But if you're if your

(29:35):
times flexible, we call you and we go a few
different times, and we do it on your schedule.

Speaker 1 (29:39):
Are you Are you okay? If both people in the
house are working and they can't see you until the evening,
are you all right with that? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (29:48):
We do appointments all the way up till six six
thirty at night, okay, if that's what needs to be
And and the two people in one home is only
a pressure tactic, so we don't need both people there.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
No.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
No, But if my wife and I were both.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
No, he's talking about this companies that there's company and
I have no say in my life, right, and people says, well,
you're going to be there, right and and yeah, and
the wife will say that was like that was like
they said they wouldn't come unless you were there. I said,
I guess they don't know you that way.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
I say, right, you do have said and you are
bingo Emmons.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
Okay, well I'm sure tell you a story. When I
came home my bathroom was missing.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Yeah, not right, you did tell me that. Yeah, all
of a sudden he came home in the bathroom was missing. Yeah. Well,
you know what if if somebody is going to be
in charge, I'm glad it's her, right, I'm definitely glad.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
I'm just a guest.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
You know she's listening, right, I know? Yeah, yeah, Why
during the break did you tell me and Josh that
you're the man and you decided how many thanksgivings you're
going to do? And not whatsoever he did all of that? Hey,
quick question, is there any tax incentives right now? I
wrote for placements, tax deductible.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
Roof replacements, more go towards, like if you get like
an upgrade, it'll lower your insurance a little bit.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
It doesn't really go total.

Speaker 3 (31:10):
This is the latest thing now when you buy a house,
if they'll ask you every house if the roof is
over ten years old or fifteen years old, they might
we'll make you put a new roof on. Now, that's
all bad insurance is right now with.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
And insurance is also sending I call it the letter
of death where they're actually sending letters to people saying
if you don't replace your roof within ninety days or
have a contract or dropping you.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Yeah, so what I mean it's there because well because
every time you get a hailstormer, you know they're getting
they're losing a lot of money. So now they want Wait,
so if you get a house, they want a new roof.
If you get a new if you switch insurance companies,
they're going to want probably a new roof.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
Do you guys handle all the you know, permits and
things like that in different communities, because you've got to
be very knowledgeable depending on what if you're in Burlington,
or if you're in East Troy, if you're in Milwaukee,
if you're in a Cedarbury, if you're.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
If you're working every town is different.

Speaker 1 (32:02):
Every town and then if every subdivision too. Sometimes they've
got people that are watching out. I watched those videos
all the time where there are people who say, you know,
you can't park your car, you're you know, on my.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
I went ton h o A, but I met the
people from the O H o A. Yeah, the guy
just had us whole but just looking six stones on
his whole basement look fantastic.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
Was great.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
But the HOA says, you can't do that, and I was.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Like, they have redo it.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
No, they wonder how much doesn't it cost to have
us take it off and put make the concrete block
while that concrete block again, that's why we were there.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
Oh man, see the h they're no joke. Man, you
got you gotta make sure that you're doing some of
the things. I think. I put my Christmas lights up
like two days early, and my wife's like, I don't
think you can turn them on until this date. I go,
I think we'll be okay.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
No, not only h o as, but different things have
different types of permits. So like the permitting to do
a roof is way different the permits to do a
siding or and one of the hardest miss to get
is actually the decks on the porch is because that
supports humans. So once there's something that could be open
up to litigation, you have to do a little bit
more in the permitting process to get those done.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
Hey, do you guys at this point and again it's
a newer company and you can go to Rockriver Roofing
dot com, Rockriver Roofing dot com and Josh or Kevin
and you know the people there can take great care
of you. When when you go to Rockwriverroofing dot com,
understand that they also are including they have do a

(33:32):
lot of exterior work and they're going to change the
name to Rock River Roofing and Exterior and they're working
on that that website right now. When when you talk
about getting the permits and all of that, I think
that that's one of the bigger parts of of what
people in your industry offer because guys like me, I
wouldn't even know where to go to get that right.

(33:54):
I wouldn't know is the village of Pewaukee's the city Pewaukee?
Do I need to? You know all of that? So
you've got to be well versed with that.

Speaker 4 (34:01):
And not only that there I've seen it before. We're
like take a take a neighborhood like a busy neighborhood,
and one half the neighborhoods the city and one half
the neighborhoods the township or the county like it could
get as low as that. So knowing the address, plugging
it in the right spot, calling it, it's just some
footwork to make sure you're getting the permit from the right.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
And some things are different, like wolf repairs. So you
don't need we permit for wolf repairs. Yeah, you do
in some places. In some places you do. I mean
I'm gonna mention the towns.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
No, you probably don't want to, I know.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
But just some places there and some towns I'll be like, well,
only if it's twenty five percent or more of the roof.
If it's you know, and everybody's got they all got
thrown rules. And the contractor has to know the difference.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
Hey, on the residential the commercial side, that's a whole
different animal when it comes to licensing in permits, right.

Speaker 4 (34:51):
Yes and no in Wisconsin not not really too much.
But you definitely have to know what you're doing because
commercial is going to grade you a little harder than
reside cential.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
Will the permits costs more. Okay, when you work on
a condo. That's when when I work on a condo,
a lot of that's considered. I have to get taken
out commercial permit for those for working on condos in
a different rate is higher rate and everything just for
because that's the way you can deconsidered for commercial.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
If you're if you like you did for ours, a
fix instead of replaced, you still need to get all
that looked at.

Speaker 4 (35:24):
It's all the townships change, and the problem is it's
ever changing. Just like you had elections at your condo,
the government has elections and each one comes with their
own policies and rule changes. So what could have been
I don't need a permit last year, you can need
a permit this year. So you have to keep checking
almost every year just to make sure.

Speaker 3 (35:42):
The problem is a state could have one rule if
save Milwaukee has her own rules. Every has a rule,
and then the city can do you can say, well,
they don't require us anywhere else in the state while
they do in that town. So you got to watch
out for all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 1 (35:55):
Hey, the and then we'll get to a break the
the different color and different options that people can have
now on a roof seems a lot wider than you know,
you drive through different neighborhoods and now there are roofs
that have different colors and different sizes. It just seems
like your industry has kind of expanded the options that

(36:17):
people have when it comes to how they want their
house to look.

Speaker 4 (36:20):
Yeah, that is they really did a lot of technology
on the granules of a roof, including the different colors.
So all colors as on a roof is the rocks
are a different color. So it's it's pretty cool that
they could do that.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
Do you do?

Speaker 1 (36:34):
You go? You know, they're they're they look, every industry
has shows that you go to look at kind of
what's the next big thing and what what the trends
are and what to expect. Do you get a chance
to go to any of those?

Speaker 4 (36:48):
We actually have booths and most of them like so
the we're in the we're in two shows of Madison,
the L and L shows, and we're in the Narry
Madison show. We we're hopefully in the Narry Milwaukee show
as well, and so we're trying to open our opportunities

to try to jump on and finish up in the spring.

Yeah, and I'm sure there's a long line of other
people that new jobs. You're gonna have to.

Start outside work because yeah, we're still backed up on outside.

Speaker 1 (39:41):
Josh, next time you come in, don't you want to
be able to just say what he just said, We
have so much business that we need now your company,
you guys just started this number of months ago, but
I can see the excitement that you have working with

Well, that's a good exac ample, right, A new company
is going to try very very hard. It isn't like
our company doesn't try real hard, but your reputation and
referrals everything has a big part of business. So when
you're a new company like they are, you got to
be perfect to your customers. You've got to really make
sure because if you have one bad review, that can
you know, that can that can hurt you because people
go out the way to tell you how bad they are.

(40:19):
So it takes a while. You know, we got you know,
one hundred and fifty years of doing this. You know,
we got a lot of referrals. But when you're brand
new like this, they have to So you want to
be one of their first customers because you know what,
that baby is going to be perfect.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
It's going to be perfect. Hey. The kind of questions
that you get asked a lot people, I'm sure want
to know if you guys are covered through insurance, right,
if you guys are vetted. What what are the kind
of questions that people have for you with a startup
company that that that that you guys are doing. People

(40:51):
want to understand the experience and that you're not going
to take a down payment and never be seen again.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (40:58):
So there's there's multiple advanceages of being It's gonna be
a little longer answer because there's a few advantages. One,
you know that there's the owner is going to be
at every job, so there you know, he's going to
come make sure that the job's done right. He's the
project manager making sure that it's done right, which is
an advantage. We do have our dwellers contractor license. What

(41:18):
you need, we have our we are insured as well
in license to do what we need to do.

Speaker 3 (41:23):
First red flag that you can get when you when
you hire a riffer if they say, you know what,
it'd be cheaper as a homeowner if you will get
the billing permit. That means they can't. Oh that's a
really good Yeah, that's that means that they can't. Then
you probably don't have the proper insurance because in order
did he take out a dwelling contract, you gotta the
proper insurance. You got to stay Licensed's things you got
to do.

Speaker 1 (41:43):
Can can we talk about that real quick? Say that again.
If somebody says, hey, it'd be cheaper if you went
and got it.

Speaker 3 (41:48):
Yourself, that's your first red flag that that should be
a huge red flag, right.

Speaker 4 (41:52):
And it happens to permit. It's on your homeowner's insurance,
not our insurance.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (41:57):
The problem is you have like let's say, if somebody
gets a home owner per and someone falls off the roof.
Guess who is stuck with the OSHA fines and all
the medical bills. Whoever takes out the permit is the
one that's responsible. And that's why OSHA looks at too
for finds and things.

Speaker 1 (42:11):
What a great point to be brought up here near
the end of the show. I didn't know that, and
I'm thinking there's a lot of people that think, well,
I can save twenty bucks if I go do this
on my own. Man, the long termine, that could be horrible.

Speaker 4 (42:24):
No, and the fact that we're preferred contractors with everything
that's what you're looking for. It sounds ridiculous where you go,
what is preferred mean? Preferred means that the vendor likes
us so much that they put us in a program
and we now have access to there. So if Hardy,
if you they're like, oh, you're gonna put hard James
Hardy siding up, I can have Alex and James Hardy
siding go out to a job and double check it

(42:47):
and make sure that he likes how it looks. If
that you know what I mean, that's what we have
access to his preferred content.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
I know Alex and Palm, both those guys. Yeah, they
necess This is what happens too sometimes when I go
to roofs, you know they are roof leak and we
got full insurance aiming and stuff like this. Well, you know,
I'm not roofing expert on roofing, but this roof isn't
done right. You better call those that company that, and
then they'll say, yeah, they won't they won't warranty it
because it wasn't installed properly. And and now you're out.

(43:14):
You're just you're just you think you gotta warrant. You
think you got a warranty and you don't.

Speaker 1 (43:19):
Man, that's kind of bid that. Look, if you don't
do that just correctly, right and and take the proper
steps to do it correctly, you're gonna have some sleepless nights. Man.

Speaker 2 (43:30):
Yeah no.

Speaker 4 (43:31):
And that's another thing of you know, me be in
the industry as long as I have and to have
those connections where I can call them and be like, hey,
I'm switching over.

Speaker 2 (43:40):
You know I know how to do it.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
You know how that we do it, and then they
trust because they've watched, you know, they know we could
do a good job. And making sure that you're taking
care of is what's important.

Speaker 2 (43:51):
To us.

Speaker 4 (43:51):
It's it's taken that. Going back to what you were saying,
what's it about a smaller company? You have access to you.

Speaker 2 (43:57):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (43:57):
You're not getting one of my guys. You're getting me
and you know, and that's the big thing. We want
to make sure you're taken care of. So, so if
we have a guy and he goes out there and
you don't like it, and you one of you guys
refer to you can everybody has accessed to me in
my number.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
Nobody's not allowed to give that.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
Out really, so I can give it out. Yeah, are
you sure? Yep, you can get that all right? Six

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm.
