Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Creative Construction of Wisconsin home improvement show
on Fox Sports nine twenty your iHeartRadio app coming live
from the Donovan and Jorgensen Heating and Cooling studios. Have
no idea. It was like seventy coming in and now
it's like fifty. I don't know if you're turning your
furnace back on your AC whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Well, yeah, last night we had the windows open last night. Yeah,
I mean then we got this morning, they got shut
in a pretty big hurry.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Yeah. And I got a text from pipe Bond that
it was really cold in the studio and it's like eighty.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
In here now, So I know, I got a long
underwear on it.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I know. I believe you. It's not that cold. It's
a snuggle. We want to snuggle. Hey, I'm excited about
today's show. You know. We had Toby Van Sistein, who
was the I don't know what his title, Executive officeer,
Director of Government Affairs, all kinds of stuff with Metropolitan
Bilder's Association, but one of my favorite people from that
(00:57):
front office. She sings like an angel. She's not here
to sing today, maybe later, maybe during one of the breaks.
You will Pam Lonis, who is the director of events.
You got some big weekends, Pam. But first of all,
how are you.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
So good to thank you for having us?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yeah, you're doing all right.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I'm doing great.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Family, everybody's good.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Everybody's good. Yes, everybody's good.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yes. Yeah. Pam and my sister in law, brother in
law of the Lamafas go to church together, Daniel, we do. Yeah,
that's awesome. I didn't know that this about you. But
my sister in law, said, Kathleen Lamofas said, Pam sings
like an angel. I said, you gotta be kidding. Why
doesn't she ever sing your word together? I don't know.
You should ask her. You've been saying, Hey, you've been
(01:38):
singing for a while.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Huh uh huh. Like, oh, I'm going to say forty
five years you've.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Been in choir ben in. Yes, did you sing in high.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
School or I did school in Arizona?
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Really?
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yes? Yeah. I didn't move here until I was like eighteen.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
So what a big adjustment at that age?
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yes? I bet it was.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Oh, I bet you were a treat to be about.
Right then, Hey we're moving to Wiscott Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Well it was closer to my boyfriend. So you know
you just had to go where.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
There you go?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Love is there?
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Are you followed? Love? Well? I love? What's going on
this the next three weekends. Yes, for NBA, that's called
it transitioning Radie like that. I'm excited about it. A
lot of houses for people to see. The Metropolitan Billers
Association Spring Tour going on this weekend, next weekend and
the following weekend from noon to four Saturday and Sunday.
(02:31):
If you go to their website, go to NBA Spring
Tour dot com. NBA Spring Tour dot com. I don't
know if you can't do all of these homes, you
can't see them all in my time? How many? How
many different properties?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
We have sixty one projects and they're from I think,
let's see East Troy. We have Cedarberg. I mean we
have Grafton Nomine Falls everywhere.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
And not only homes, but they're like the one in Cedarburg.
There's a single lot that I was looking at by
the way King's Way Homes Stone Lake. You can you're
right on the lake, yes, and you can go take
a look at that lot. And then there's a condo
in Heartland.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, I was going to say, there's probably a handful
of condos, handful of lots, a couple of subdivisions.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
And do you know the home in Pewaukee on Swan
Boulevard is a stone throw from my home. Oh, and
I see it all the time. Yeah, we're in the
condo project right.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Oh, okay, and I.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Drive past there. It's it's beautiful. The home is gorgeous. Yes,
I'm looking forward to this. This is a free event.
It's a free events, so we're we're not raising money
for fun, no, nothing, right, they don't have to pay.
Just come and take a look at these beautiful homes.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yes, they are open for people to just tour, go through.
There'll be a representative from each of the builders there.
So I think I think it's just a great opportunity
for people to have the time to talk to somebody.
You can go online and look at photos and it's great,
but to be able to like speak to someone you
know face to face and just ask questions and I
(04:12):
think that's the best thing about that.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
But do you remember there's a lot of people out there,
you know, there's whole Amazon thing, there's a lot of
people like to still want to go out there and
touch and see things. And this is it was so
good about this. I really have to build my own home.
What do you want to build? Well, this will get
your mind in the right direction and what you want
to do, and go meet and find a contractor you
have a that you can build a relationship with. And
that's what's so good about these About these things, you
(04:35):
actually can talk to people who will actually be working
on your home, yeah right, or your project or whatever
you're working on, and then you can build a relationship
because if you have a good relationship, you're going to
have a great house.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Or if you're if you're looking for one that's already built.
Yeah right, you want you want? Ready move? Let's let's
let's go. And this is perfect. Hey, can we talk
before we get continue to talk about the Spring Tour,
Pam today, you are the director of events, correct for NBA.
To give me a day to day I look, you
(05:07):
guys are always about a year a year and a
half out from planning these events, So I wonder what
it's like for you. The ball starts rolling, so two
months ago, the ball starts rolling, the snowball down the hill,
you either get on taple it out of the way.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah, and.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Two months ago you guys are ready pretty much ready
for this, Yes, but now you've got to start doing
finishing touches and make sure that all the builders and
developers are ready for this.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
When do you start thinking that about next year?
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Right now? Actually, we've had lots of conversations already about
next year. But yeah, we start the year off with
the home Show and then we just it goes right
into the spring tour and we just get the builders
on board, and it's the signage and it's locations and
all that stuff, and it's just balling keeps rolling.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
On one the home the Home Show Committee, and we've
been it isn't like we didn't we're not going to
talk about we've been me talking about it. Next year's
I mean, so the first week it ends or so,
we have a meeting and we wrap up, Okay, what
are we doing next year? And just we just go
right into it. And she's and that's what she does
this with this that to her homes, Praate of Homes.
Some of those things are year and a half two
(06:20):
years in advance, like the Praate of Holmes.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Well, I think she's just a great chat with the
awards banquet. That's what I think. But here the MC
isn't you got you gotta find somebody else. I'm always
shocked when I get that call. You know, I I
the first year, but.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
You answering what really really wanting to come back?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Are you? You're trying to get Lance Allen's number from me, Archie,
That's what I always think. Or Steve the Homer Tour
or whoever. Do you have one of those numbers?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:47):
I do not, and good luck trying to find those anyway.
Hey tell me when when you guys start looking at events,
I always think like, Okay, we have the template. This
is what really worked last year, but it didn't work
the year before. Let's tweak this. How much of that
you guys do And is it the next week when
(07:08):
this is done, where you guys sit down as a
team and go, Okay, what can we how can we
make this better? And what didn't work that we should
take off?
Speaker 4 (07:15):
So we're I mean, we're always looking at ways to
do things. I'm not going to necessarily say better but different, right,
trying to just kind of recreate it and kind of
what's going with the times, just to keep a fresh
look on our events, and we're looking at it while
it's going on. Even in the lead up, we could
be talking about something, Well, how did the lead up
to this go? Do we want to start looking ahead?
We are planning two to three years in advance for everything.
(07:37):
So the one we're in now, the one that's coming in,
the one after that, the paray to homes as the example, Right,
that's the I mean, that's our flagship event.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
That's that's a big deal. How many years that been
going on?
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Where this should be the ninetieth but we doubled up
for the in the COVID year. Yeah, so we've we've
been doing it for ninety years.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
But it's it's we're I mean, we are already planning
the twenty seven or the twenty sixth parade on what's
going to where that's going to be and what's going on,
And the twenty five is still you know, a couple
of months out.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Well yeah, yeah, member, they have to look for our
piece of earth, the buildings.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Well that's that's the tough thing.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, they got a lot of ers.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Do Hey. The difference between being you now you're wearing
a couple of hats but now they as the executive director,
do you do you look at this different than than
you did a year ago.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Different is a really great word. Yeah, yes, I mean yes,
you know, I kind of kid. The staff are used
to that. There's always two ways to do everything, the
wrong way in Toby's way, but now it really is
so that.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Works, home boy coming before the falls. This isn't on
the radio yet, right, No, no, we're alive Fox Sports, your
heart radio half it is.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
But it's you know, we have a really great team
and and it's a it is a group efforts, so
having good conversation and let everybody know that they're empowered
to have good ideas and good thoughts and you know
we're we're always taking that into consideration. So I mean
does great. Everyone on the team is great. So it's good.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
But it is it is a little bit different, Like
you can have great ideas as the director of government
affairs and you can be one of hey what about this?
He can we try this? Look the difference to you
to be an assistant coach and the head coach. It's
only six inches or more than that with my backside,
but you know, twelve inches over on the bench. But
(09:25):
it's a huge difference. Now you're making some decisions. And
I'm wondering for you in your mindset now when you
go to this this weekend, are your eyes looking at
it a little bit different than they would be?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
I'm sure, I mean it has to be, but even
in the in the previous years, because we are a
you know, really solid team. You know, we've only got
you know, six people on staff, so we're not this huge,
big outfit. But the people that we have are just
really good at what they do and that's what makes
it easy. So certainly going out and looking at it
is good, but they do they do a good job.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
And I wasn't a very good manager of people because
I was I want to be everybody's friend and I
didn't want to tell anybody no on anything and I
and I guess I'm trying to get into your head
a little bit, And I apologize for that, Toby, But
I'm wondering, is that just a different mindset where you
go look this, this is what I think. I didn't
(10:21):
get this pushed through, it didn't get approved of the
last couple of years, but man, I just think this
is a really good idea and I want to bring
it to the team. So this is a great question
you should ask Pam. But I mean I would say
I'm I'm by far of the best boss she's ever had.
But you know, you know she didn't say that to
her nor the break leading in No, but I have
(10:41):
got to be She's got to go now, so she came.
I appreciate. I mean, she's sitting right next to you.
I don't know why you're handing her her car keys
in her jacket for her to leave. Man, you gotta go.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
You know, it's it's hard to self proclaim yourself as
being good at something. It really is others that will
say it about you.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
But I mean, I I do.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
There are things that that certainly I looked at before
and went, well, I wouldn't really do it like that.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
And now I do.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I'll say there's a lot of things that he's an
executive director. He's more andful. Like Pam's out in front.
Everyone knows if she gets gaining ovations for all the
stuff that she does all the time, right, But but
to hope he does stuff behind his scenes that nobody
they don't understand. How you're helping all the benefits He's
an advocate for he contractors. They literally go to legal
battles with the city and there's things that they do
and help protect I back the contractors and do what's
(11:26):
best for the you know. They do all the kind
of stuff and all the legal stuff, and like we're
going to Madison on Wednesday, they go talk some stuff there.
There's some stuff that you really don't know about less
you're heavily involved with the NBA. But there's a lot
of stuff that he does and he helps all contractors
that are in MBA and people are out of NBA.
Stuff that he's doing.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Tolby, you know. And the fact that he's saying this
with you here. He says the same stuff when you're
not just you know, no, and look, I'm glad that
you're now worrying both hats where you haven't yet given
up the one hat. And that might happen in the future,
I would think. But the fact that if you can
find somebody who has their back the way you do
(12:06):
and and did, if you give that position up when
we have other people in here and they say that
stuff about you, like he's the guy who goes to
bad Forest and he's there and he's behind the scenes
and he's duking it out for us. And I think
that that's that's about as good as the thing that
you can have set about you behind your back. So
I appreciate that. Pam. Let's talk about what a rotten
(12:30):
boss he is. And he doesn't let you know. You
got to be there at seven am till seven pm.
There's no potty breaks. You don't get half to that's
a half day. See, there's an issue, right.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
There's twenty four hours, twelve hours and a half day, half.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Day, and six days a week. But he allows you
to sing in the choir at your.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Yeah, he gives me a little bit.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
He's such a good he's such a good Guykim. How
long have you been with the NBA.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
I've been with the NBA six years. I think I'm
going on my seventh year.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Did you come in with a vent?
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I did not?
Speaker 1 (13:01):
You did not? What did you do prior?
Speaker 3 (13:03):
I was in the financial world for twenty years?
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Really?
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (13:08):
What interested you with MBA?
Speaker 3 (13:11):
You know, banking? I was a manager of a bank.
I did all kinds of banking stuff and it just
got very competitive and I just I don't know. After
twenty years, I was like I want to do something different.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
So I know the answer I think, but I'm going
to ask you. This is the question that I have
for kids that come in my high school show. We
do a cour Electric Superhero the week and we pick
kids seniors that are really good in the classroom, very
active in the school. I have that servant leadership part,
and I believe that that's a learned behavior. And in
the position that you're in, if you don't have that
(13:45):
servant leadership hard to be able to serve everybody, I
don't think you can succeed, and you would never be
there seven years in a position like that. Where do
you think that part you came from? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (13:57):
And for me, I just I'm a I love to
be around people and this just gives me the opportunity
to meet people, to see people. My goal is to
make the best events I can have and make the
NBA shine. And I love the NBA and what it
stands for.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
I think it's from your father. It was a pastor,
and that's servant leadership. Partner. I don't mean to answer
the question for you, but yeah, you lost him not
that long ago, and all I can tell you is
from my family members that attend huge loss for a
(14:34):
really great community, and they talk about how much he
gave back, and I think that that is definitely where
it came from. Guys throughout the show today, the twenty
twenty five NBA Spring Tour, and look, spend a couple
hours today. If you want to see all of these,
you got to use all three weekends, I think would
be the way to go. And because it's free, it's
(14:56):
not like it costs you a bunch of money. But
if you go to their web site, it's NBA Spring Tour,
NBA Springtour dot com, twenty four participants with sixty one
project locations, you can go and get the map and
kind of map out your day. You've got a few
how many hours.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Twelve to four today, Yeah, twelve to four.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Every single so today and tomorrow, the next Saturday, Sunday,
in the following Saturday Sunday, twelve to four each day,
and I think you can probably get to four five today,
four or five tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Me then where you go. I mean, the good thing
is we have them listed by city. So if let's
say you want to go to Menomini Falls, I mean
there's probably six or seven projects there. You could probably
hit those pretty quickly.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
And the map that you have has all of it,
so you can you know, you can start in East
Troy right and then move up. There's a way, there's
ways to do this when you look at that map,
and then you can take a look at the outside
of each of these homes, you know, the one in
Brookfield and then you go to Cedarburg and Delafield and
there's a number in Delafield. By the way, you can
(16:03):
you can spend the whole weekend in Delafield if you want.
And again East Troy and Franklin and Gennese and Germantown.
Go to m b A Spring tour dot com and
take a look at all the information you can when
when you hit the more details here, there's pictures of
the inside that you can see. But as Bingo talked about, look,
(16:25):
you can go online to try to get a field
for this Bingo, but unless you walk through it, you
don't get it real.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
There's a lot of people that just that still want
to touch and field stuff. And then, like you said,
build a relationship with the contractors that's there.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Yeah, hey, Toby, if we can move that over real quick.
When when you guys. This this one is is kind
of the kickoff of the Spring Right, how long have
you guys been doing the Spring Tour and and how
how difficult is it to get contractors to want to
be involved in it?
Speaker 4 (16:56):
So with with this one, I mean, we've only been
doing this the last a couple of dozen y so
this hasn't been along or around as long as the
prede of homes. But you know, getting the builders to participate,
I'm gonna say it's pretty easy because they have some
beautiful homes and they really like to showcase these, so
being a part of it is a simple decision. Some
of these houses, I mean they're pretty new, they're they're
(17:17):
builders models some aspects, they're ready to be sold. You
could make an off run at this weekend, so there
are plenty of those out there. A couple of the
houses are actually past parade homes that the Parade of
Home Builders had hung on to to use his models.
So if you missed it at the parade, here's another
opportunity to go see some of the most beautiful homes
in the area.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
And how does that because the one on Swan was
part but I see, like at night there's a car there,
So I don't know if somebody from the company stays
or but it's interesting because I didn't get there. We're
going to get there either this weekend or next weekend
because I drive by it so much and I often think,
I wonder what it looks like in there. Well, now
(17:54):
it's the perfect time to do that. And how does
that work? If they if they hung on to it
as his model, they show that for people that want
to home build, and now they've they they've said, okay,
we've we've hung onto it for a year and now
it's time to sell it. Is that how that works?
Speaker 4 (18:09):
So it could be I mean most most of the times,
you know builders that do models, they maybe a year
is a good amount of time to hang on to it.
If it's really popular and a good location, maybe they
keep it for two, but they're looking to get out
of that one and get onto the next one as well.
So if if you go into a house and they've
had it on you know, headed on their their books
for a while and you really like it, absolutely asked
the question, so what would it take to get me
(18:30):
in the door tomorrow?
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Because it could be yours? Well then and I can
tell you that it's built by James Craig Builders, and
it's called the Beymont Swan Road in Pewaukee. And I
can tell you that my wife and I are going
and we're going to go see a condo in Heartland
and then we're gonna go walk through this because we
drive by it all the time and go how big
(18:52):
is that backyard? Hey? Do they have a deck there?
So now is the perfect time for us to walk
through the James Craig Builders the bay on p On
Swan Road. Awaywalkinge is the way of listening.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Yes, well, I'm just saying, because this house has a basement,
why would you do Why? Because I know that also
cares about it. She wants a basement.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Anytime, Miss Pam, anytime there is a tornado, watch a
tornado warning. We are five minutes from Kathy Lamfa. So
she's like, put your shoes on. We're going, Well, build
me a basement. We're in a condo, build me a bait.
I can't build you a basement. We're going to Kathy's
house and I'll text Todd make some popcorn. We're coming
(19:38):
over and to La MafA. But then make some popcorn
and we'll go sit in the basement until the tornado
warning is over and the sirens stopped going off, and
Terry's mad at me for two days because we don't
have a basement. Thanks for bringing it up, being.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Im saying it's right there.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
It is right there. Well maybe if they don't sell
it right away, can I just get a key? Tell
me you're executive officer.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
You know, i'd speak on behalf of James Craig Builders,
but that probably would get me to not have my job,
so we don't want that could be a verbal. I
don't know if that's weird enough.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Yeah, look, well I'll just when she kicks me out,
I'll go over there for a little while. Might me
my buddies, No worries, No one's got there. It's a
little bit like animal house. But it'll be okay, boy,
it'll be okay. We're gonna get to a break. We're
talking today. NBA Spring Tour. If you go to NBA
Spring Tour dot com on that website again, twenty four participants,
(20:33):
sixty one projects from condos to lots, model homes and subdivisions.
Take a look at this. It's a free event and
if if you're looking for something to do this weekend
and you're driving about, make sure that you print print
out that map and you can take a look at
some of these beautiful homes that NBA is. I'm telling
(20:53):
you if you want to find something that in a
neighborhood that's really good, or one of these homes, or
just ideas if you want to redo your home on
some of these kitchens and bathrooms and boy, it's just
a great way to get some ideas. As Bigo we
talked about before. We're going to get to a break.
We'll continue talking with Toby Van Sistein and Pam Loonis,
(21:13):
both from MBA. This is the Creative Construction Wisconsin Home
Improvement Show on Fox Sports ninet twenty in your iHeart
Radio app. Welcome back to the Creative Construction of Wisconsin
Home Improvement Show on Fox Sports nine twenty in your
iHeart Radio app. Coming live from the Donosment.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Done talking about off air stuff yet.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Talk about referees. They love me. Now. We got two
basketball officials here and I put them in the kind
of the green room because we're going to.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Start special Is that a special club for everybody?
Speaker 1 (21:43):
I teed you up, yo, Well that would be a
big club. Hell, that would be a I don't know
if the studio would handle all those guys. And we
don't need to talk about Bruce over at best Electric.
I think he teed me up a few times too. Boy.
Now that I'm retired from coaching, all of a sudden,
good guy refs are waving at me. How you been mcgivering?
Good to see? Yeah, where were you five years ago? Well,
(22:07):
you're you're nicer now than it used to be as well.
We are talking today. NBA Spring Tour going on this
weekend today and tomorrow, then next Saturday, Sunday and the
following Saturday and Sunday at noon to four. And it's
a free event. Twenty four participants, sixty one projects, that's
the key, sixty one projects that you can go to
(22:29):
here the next three weekends. Model homes, subdivisions, lots, condominiums,
a lot of different things you can do. And to
get all the information, it's NBA Spring Tour dot com.
Big ah. When we talk about all of the different participants,
twenty four of them, for them to get involved in
(22:50):
this and make sure the home is ready to be shown,
and then to have staff is their staff here?
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Yeah, by the way, so the four hours things signed
on a door is just not man walking around to whatever.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
I've tried that nobody ever leaves your key for me.
I just wondered if they had. So there's a commitment
to this, yeah, for for for the participants to be
able to have staff there and walk people through.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
I said, but there's a market out there that still
wants to touch and feel and see things. And that's
what that's what this is, you know. I mean you
could try to say, Okay, I'm gonna make a commandment,
I'm gonna get a participation troll for yourself and if
you get all sixty one or something. But what you
do is you want to go out there and see
you who you want to work with, Who do you
want to remodel in your house, who you want to
know with, and because that's where you really see because
you can see stuff. Another thing too, when these contractors
(23:37):
are doing things, they also trying to impress all our
contractors too. So it's some really good stuff out there.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
It's kind of like the banking industry a little bit competitive. Yeah,
not from your position, right, you kind of like that
you want them to be a little bit competitive. What's
And I've told this a lot Pam and Toby, I
want you to know this too, that what's interesting when
I get a chance to come and EMC the event,
(24:02):
the people that are there and don't win are clapping
more than the table of the company. That it is
very competitive, but man, they are going over and high
five in the winners and saying well done. And then
before the event, I walk around and just listen and
they're like, hey, on that home that you did in
(24:24):
Pewaukee the countertop, how did you? And I'm like, you're competing?
Why are you telling them the end? Like as a
basketball coach, I'd never tell you are you going to
play Zoner? Man, I'm not telling you. Wait till you
get to the gym. But they're very open and then
high five in people when they win awards. It's a
really cool environment to be in and it's kind of
(24:47):
like everybody wants to win, and if they don't win,
nobody's like upset, but they're you know, they feel like, ah,
I'm going to get it next year. But they're high
five and people. And when you look at the builders
that are involved in this year Spring Tour, I think
I've given almost every one of these companies awards at
the awards banquet. Yeah, Tim O'Brien and Victory and and
(25:10):
you know, Bolinsky and Bellman and Aspen and Anderson, and
it just keeps going, allan builders. I know that I've
given awards to alls.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
We just had them on not too long ago.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
I didn't want to read all of them.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
People look at the list.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
And I got to tell you, though, do you know
what the first year they hired me to MC, You're
the one who gave them my name and numbers, said,
and then you told them the whole Narry story. And
I was really surprised that they called me because that
one didn't go very well, not at all. People still
come up to me and talk about sweat beach on
my forehead. They thought I was having a heart attack.
(25:46):
So I appreciate you guys. It was.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
It was funny from our point of view.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
I'm glad I brought you some humor. Pal, I am
glad I've brought you some humor. Hey, when when this starts,
which is today at noon? As you go through this,
did did do any of these builders starting? They don't
make any changes now right, It's it's a finished project.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
No, but we have had where a project will sell
during it and so you know they'll have to say
we sold our project. You know, we got to pull
the project. So that has happened before. Then they have
the love that I'm sure they do love that.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Yes, if they two people competing for can we have
a count? So next week we'll say, well you only
got fifty eight.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
Good keep us in Oh yes, because we will let people.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Know because we're gonna have Joe on President of NBA
is gonna be on next week.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
We do give them an opportunity to put another home
in there, so we try to keep it.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Hey, as the executive, is there any any talking points
that you want us to teach Joe up for? And
you know we can look we if you got a
few things that you need from him that we can
accomplish live on the radio for you.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
So for clarity, the president of the Association is my
direct boss. So he's great. He's the best president we've
had this year. So yeah, great guy, love love Joe Joe.
If you're listening, thanks man, you're great.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Wow, he's your boss. Yeah, we're going to tell him
what you said about him during the break. Oh God,
you might want to give him that twenty bucks you
awhim for for sure. So as you're doing this now,
the next this summer is what when is the preade?
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (27:33):
It prays for August ninth, so that that's going to
be here before you know it. I mean, it's it's coming.
And there's I mean the houses under construction, they're they're going,
you know.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Take summer vacation. What's the summer vacation. Pam's used, No, no,
don't you know with you she has four weeks off.
Doesn't get it, she doesn't, She shaking her head. No, no, no,
But honestly, is there because there's not much time between
now and when that happens.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
And like I said, I mean, things are always in motion.
So even you know, we're talking about this year's parade,
we're talking about next year's parade, we are talking about
next year's expo for the home home Building Remodeling Show.
I mean we are there's always three, four, five events
along with because those are the consumer side of things.
We have monthly, if not two times a month, member events.
We've got a golf outing, we've got a clay shoot,
(28:23):
we do dinners, we do general membership meetings, there's Witter Five's.
There is always something going on. When it's the golf
event that June June twenty fourth, Are you coming out?
We'll talk.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
At the hookup, was Zach. We're actually sponsoring a whole time.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
I might be at it. We're going out of town
one week in June. Oh so utifications too there?
Speaker 3 (28:44):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (28:45):
How network? The the Givern Agency, I'm the founder of
president CEO right. Only my personal assistant tells me when
that can go on vacation. My wife, Terry, she was
my secretary, but I had to let her go, but
she's still my She said, you can fire me. I
didn't even know I was your secretary. And I go, well,
there's the issue. That's why I'm firing you, because you
(29:07):
didn't know and you should know that kind of stuff.
It's when somebody asks you the difference between the Parade
of Homes and the Spring Tour or what do you
tell them?
Speaker 4 (29:17):
I mean, the biggest one is this is really kind
of that scattered site model where there's homes all over
the place. I mean it's all over southeastern Wisconsin. The
Parade of Homes when we're doing that, that's individual sites
so that's kind of that cluster mentality. So we've got
two locations for the parade coming up. Both are in
Menominee Falls, but you know, there are a few minutes apart,
which makes it great.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
You'll be able to get to both parade sites on
the same day.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
But those are all new and built specifically for the parade,
so they still have that new home smell. These might
have been on the market already or been used for
a model, so some of them have been around for
a few months, but still you know, new and beautiful homes.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
So when I was a kid, i played football, basketball, baseball.
People say what's your favorite support and I'd be like,
whatever season do you have a favorite of? Oh that's
a great shay? What baby? What baby do you like
the most?
Speaker 4 (30:05):
Right this is so hard because I mean the parade
of homes, because it's been around for so long. It
is really cool to see all of those homes come together.
I mean, right now, if you drove by a site,
it sticks and bricks there in the middle of construction.
They are all different phases and magically, somehow, through all
of that effort they will come together and be gorgeous
homes by the time the parade opens. If you stop
(30:25):
by a week before the parade, there's no saw down.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
There's me and Zach went the You can't even park there.
Does people work it everywhere?
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Everywhere?
Speaker 2 (30:32):
It's just just all kinds of commotion going on week before.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Hey, Pam as as the director of event. When when
it's a week out of the parade and you're driving,
do you sleep at all?
Speaker 3 (30:43):
I was just gonna say no, I pretty much don't
sleep for about a month before and then during just
because you're right, it's like even up until two three
days before you go. You know, I go there quite free,
just to check it out, and I just have this
panic moment. But I think for me, it's what he said.
It's that aha moment when you pull in and it's
(31:05):
like this looks like a perfect subdivision. The homes are gorgeous,
and it's like we're ready to go.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
It's exciting the difference between now you seven six years,
seven years in compared to your one. Oh yeah, oh,
it's got to be even your two, right, you're thinking,
but at this point you but you still have where
your heart beat goes a little bit and you're like, man,
I don't know in the next three days if we
(31:32):
can get this thing done and then.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Boom, it is crazy. Yeah, I mean I there's a
comfort now after doing it for a few years, but
I still have the moments where I'm like, oh, I
step in his office and I'm like, oh, I just
need a few moments to.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
If you have a new builder, right, a new builder
that's now part of NBA, and they go, look, we
want to be involved in that. Yeah, that's different than
when you have some of these builders been a I've
been doing it for a number of years and they
know how much handholding is there with it. With new builders,
they're pretty good.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
I mean they're all of these people are. They're really
good at what they do. So I don't worry too much.
I mean, just a little bit more instruction and giving
them some guidance. But they're all so good.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
All the builders are hey, because this is the first
time you've been in studio, that's and hopefully not the last.
Right when somebody asks you, everybody has to have an
elevator pitch, right, like, why would I join my business?
Is fine? You know, I you know, I'd like to
be a little busier, but why would I spend money
to join NBA, What do you tell them?
Speaker 3 (32:37):
Okay, Well, for me, I think the people that are
part of the NBA, they they're just they're great people.
They want to be there, they want to learn, they
want to have parts in the events, the networking, and
it's just a great the MEBA just the name behind
the NBA is just it stands. I mean, it's been
around for a long time. People love to be part
(33:00):
of the NBA and have their name in our directory.
That's a big deal for people, the opportunity to have, hey,
I want to know about such and such like category.
So they'll go to our website, they'll go to our
directory and you can know by looking at that that
these members are part of the NBA. And a lot
of times that's a big deal for people.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
I mean, say, I know for a fact, you don't
have to be a home builder to be part of NBA, right, right, correct,
Because that's because we are right and there's a lot
of other trades in there and.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
You're on the board or something. Right. Well, that's that's
why I questioned the NBA and their leadership. Yeah, see,
I got to give you shots as well. What the
the other part and and I've thrown you questions that
I didn't give you a heads up on it, and
I apologize for that. But what I had said earlier
in this segment of at the awards bank when I
(33:52):
get there early and they have kind of appetizers and
little cocktail hour and stuff, and I watch people that
compete as and they talk about, hey, were you able
to get that plot of land because we tried and
we couldn't, and how did you do it? And the
conversations they have seems like inside baseball to me, but
it's okay, and they share with each other because they
(34:13):
I believe the people there believe that the tiede you know,
all all boats will rise if we get the tie up.
And I think that that's a really important part. And
the mission statement on your website and the identity statement
and the bylaws and code of ethics. What I like
about that right on your website is people that want
(34:33):
to join know exactly what they're walking into. Here's here's
who we are. We're not running from this. This is
what our belief system is, and that servant leadership art.
This is how we can serve you as a member.
And I think that that's and they also you also too.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
They also have a recourse to They got an arbitration system.
That's all steps. So if you have a problem with
the homebuilder, you can you can handle it. There's you know,
they don't like with hanging up the phone. They take
care of it. There's a whole process for them do
it if you do have a problem.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
That's important. It's important. Part of it. Is it costly
to join MBA.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
It is not.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
I don't believe it. For a year, yeah, I mean
for a year for an associate you are at seven hundred,
and for a builder you're just under a thousand. So
that's for a whole year's.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Seven Yeah, yeah, tell me we look. I don't I
don't want any builders mad at me, but it's time
to raise that a little bit. Well, because that's like that.
You know, my grandkids come over and you've seen me
have BW three's. That's kind of what it is.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
It's cheaper in some other organizations I belong to.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Yeah, oh, I bet when.
Speaker 4 (35:38):
We want to throw in two. That one of the
great parts about our membership because we do have about
six hundred and fifty to seven hundred members right now,
about a thirder in that builder, model or developer categories.
The rest are subcontractor supplier manufacturers all of the above.
So it's a little bit of everything from bankers to
mortgage lenders to you know, guys like Bingo. I mean,
there's there're all kinds of different parts and pieces. But
our membership is also three tiered, so we are we
(35:59):
are local home Builders Association. All of our mem have
members are membership in the home or the Wisconsin Builders
Association on the state level and the national level Association
home Builders on the national level, so you're their membership
dues are actually split between three organizations. So it's not
that even we keep all of that money, it's you.
You are represented across the board, across the wad. So
for the seven hundred dollars for the year, you're in.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Those three three organizations and as the.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Government take take the executive and put government affairs. When
these guys are telling me that you're in there duke
in and throwing punches for them, that's with all.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
Of you know, there's something to it that I found
out as not recently. They actually have an eight hundred
number you can call up and talk to a legal
advisor about the state or state. I mean it's just like,
you know, I was like, what when did this happen?
But I found out about that it.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Might be time to it spent seven hundred for a bit, right, Yeah, yeah,
but I mean it's it's it's important to us.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Mean, we're not trying to make a ton of money
off of dues. We just want you to be represented.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
Well, hey, did and look a little inside baseball before
you get to a break. If people, if one of
the builders wants to be part of the spring Tour
with all of the advertising and marketing that you do
around it, does it cost them money to be part
of this? It does.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
So they do have to pay to have each one
of the homes in it, and that's part of that
partnership of they want to participate, So there's a fee,
but that money is used directly into the advertising and
everything else.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
So yeah, I think you guys have done a great
job of promoting this thing. And look to go on
that website. It's really well laid out. Whoever did that,
I commend them. The other thing we have to do,
and we have it yet, is we've got to think nuns, kitchen,
bath and Florin as we always do. There's such a
big partner with you, guys, and I love the fact
(37:43):
that they have been with you a long time and
they just continue year after year to say, look, this
is really important for us to be part of.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
And I think those guys, well, they're a really good
company to work with. They are and it's great to
have them be part of our events. They are the
presenting sponsor of all three of our our main summer events,
so it's they have a great partnership and we appreciate.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
Them a lot. Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. Guys,
let's get you a break. Will continue. This is a
really fun show. Pam, thank you so much for I
know this isn't exactly what she wanted to do on
a Saturday morning, but and you refuse, you will not
sing for us. But I tried to find some video
but I couldn't find it. But well, we'll do that.
(38:23):
Pam is the executive of I'm sorry, the executive officer.
Sorry about that. She just got promoted. She's the director
of events and Toby Kent's executive breaking news. Sorry Toby,
you've been replaced. You are now the director of Events.
Another hat for you to put on. That's great. This
(38:44):
is the Creative Construction of Wisconsin Home Improvement show on
Fox Sports nine twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Welcome back
to the Creative Construction Wisconsin Home We improve with you
on Fox Sports nine twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Coming
live from the Donovan and Jorgensen. He didn't Cooling Studios,
the largest employee owned HVAC company in the state of Wisconsin.
(39:08):
I am a helicopter grandfather, by the way, and I
proved it. Are you do you hover over the granddaughter
a little bit? Well?
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Do you let me see her? Let me see her.
She's gonna actually gonna be here today. I get round
me to talk about that Aaron. So if you're doing
this thing from twelve to four, you can still make
it to see Aaron on the stage at five thirty
tonight the presentation of a Plaster's right last, and Shelby
will be there too. She's actually actually oh well fit
the matches her dad and it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Yeah, oh cute? Is that? How is that show? Ben?
Speaker 2 (39:34):
It's all right, I mean, you know, I mean, it's
just it's a long show.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
It's a long show.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
So after a while you're like the people.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
The people that have talked to me about being at
the show said, it's the State Fair is unbelievable. It's
so beautiful.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Well, the only thing I don't like about is you
know and every once a while, you know, customers, right,
they come up and say, hey, I see you at
the show here. You know you still do my house
this year, right, you want to make sure you know
why why you don't need to sell anything. You can
come to my house when I love that.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Hey, during the break, we're talking about the map that people.
If you go to the website NBA Spring Tour dot com,
NBA Spring Tour dot com and on that map, it's
it's very it's very helpful and you did a lot
of work on this thing, and thank you for that.
Talk to me. If you go to that map, they
(40:22):
just the ease of it, right.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
So you'll see there's a map with like pinpoints of
where all the locations are. You can go there or
the really easy part about it is you just find
your location the city you want to go to. There's
a get directions button right there and it's just going
to take you right to the link. It'll take you
right to the directions or you can get more click
on more details here. You can also find the GPS
(40:45):
coordinates there if you need if that's easier for you
to put those in. But we try to make it
really easy so that there's multiple ways you can get locations.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
It's so easy that can get there.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Maybe not, maybe my wife will be driving. I know
the one on Swan Bow of in Milwaukee, I know exactly.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Door wait and get it.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you you you made the
drive on this thing. I do.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
I do drive all of them to make sure they're
right good for you.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
That, you know what. I love that and it makes
it so easy. Go on that map. You can just
hover over whichever areas that you're looking at and then
be able to get get directions more information. You know,
if you're looking at the Victory Home right, it's it's
right there. Everything that you need is right in front
(41:36):
of you, and you can map out what you're going
to go look at today, tomorrow and for the next
two weekends after from twelve to four. And it's it's
a free event. Understand that a free event. Sixty one
project locations from condominiums to subdivisions, lots model homes that
you can walk through, and even if you're not you
(41:57):
don't think you're on the market for a new home,
but you're thinking, maybe we're going to redo our kitchen,
we want to redo our bathroom, our master bedroom. This
would be a great way to get some ideas. You
can watch it on TV, or you can go and
go online and take a look. But as Bingo said,
there are still a lot of people, including me, that
want to walk The problem, Pam that I have is
(42:18):
my wife is going to The only problem is, yes,
my wife will say. My wife will say, remember this
is the lighting that I wanted in our kitchen. Or
how come we don't have a basement? These all these
places have basements. We've gone to a few of these
and she'll take out, you know, she'll take out something
(42:39):
to take notes with, and all of a sudden it's
four or five pages and the honey to do list
is a little bit much for me.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
But I think now that is a problem. Sometimes when
you see stuff you want, I mean, this stuff is beautiful.
Places are gorgeous, they have the new innovative stuff and
it's just it's fun to see.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Yeah, it really is, Bingo, or you are you getting
up on stage today at the show or is it
just Aaron?
Speaker 2 (43:03):
No, it's Aaron. Aaron's going to be the new Superstar. Well,
he likes doing it, so you know he's doing it
tonight and he's doing again tomorrow noon.
Speaker 1 (43:11):
That's beautiful. Do you guys you don't go down to
the show? Dude?
Speaker 4 (43:15):
He did?
Speaker 2 (43:15):
Yeah, they did to Toby. Was Toby was there wednesday to.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
Yeah, we got to check it out. See what.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
You have time for that?
Speaker 3 (43:27):
Well I made time for it. I did it on
my weekend, so.
Speaker 1 (43:31):
Well not this weekend. No, No, did you do you
have your game plan for today? I do?
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Yes. Well, so my daughter is actually building with Harbor
Homes right now. So we're actually going to check out
the Harbor Homes in a couple of locations.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
So what location and where is she building? What area?
Speaker 3 (43:49):
He's building in Watertown actually so, but they're they're just
in the they just are breaking ground and just beginning,
and it's it's fun for me to actually go through
it personally now with her, just to kind of see
the whole process. You know, being in the industry, you
talk about it and I work with it, but to
actually be on the other end of it's fun.
Speaker 1 (44:07):
Is it fun? There's some things to learn. Does your
daughter know there's going to be a time where it
gets frustrating and that whole roller coaster of I love you,
I hate you, you know then I can't see it
yet and all of a sudden boom.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
Is My favorite part is when I write involved with
these new homes. There is when you walk in the
