(00:00):
I just have to let our viewers, Tim know how I met you and
why I'm speaking with you today, and I'm so honored. Honestly, I
get up at two forty five tothree in the morning, so when I'm
asked to do an evening event likefive until seven far away from my house,
it's not the best thing in theworld. I have to pump myself
(00:20):
up and get ready to do it. So we're invited out to a Payway
grand opening out in Katie and Isee the happiest man sitting at a table
waiting for his wife and it's you, Tim, And I was like,
who are you and why are youhere? So let's let's start out with
that story. Tell tell everyone whatyou said to me when I noticed your
(00:43):
AT and T T shirt and yourlove for Payway. Well, my love
for Payway started a long time agowhen they opened up on Mason Road,
and I loved it was a differentkind of oriental Chinese type food. And
believe me, it was right aroundthe corner when I used to live in
Memorial Parkway. I have since movedto the west about five miles and I
(01:07):
was so disappointed when they closed. And then they closed in one on ten
ninety three, and I was soexcited a few months ago when they decided
to open up a new location nottoo far away, because now I live
in Tamar on well Spring, afifty five plus community, and I was
just so excited. I love grandopenings. Let me tell you, I
(01:29):
was a telecommunication engineer forty three yearswith AT and T. I've been all
over the city doing different things, and that was my last job. But
let me tell you I've been retiredalmost ten years. I love going to
grand openings of places that I knowthe food is going to be good.
I'm very selective about where I go. You will know this. I have
(01:51):
been the number the first customer ata lot of places like Green Goes In
and Out, Burger, Chicken,Salad Chick. I could go on and
on. I know all those places. Well. I get to meet the
owner, I get to meet thegeneral manager, I get to meet wonderful
corporate type people, and I getto meet people like you, Dana.
(02:15):
That of all places, I loveto listen to your radio station. I
thought the way you awarded the prizeswas just awesome. Everybody that came had
a great time. I hardly wantedto leave after it was over. We
were like a family. I mean, I was just so excited. I
want a cookbook, which I'm afoodie. I'm a katie for it,
(02:38):
bidden foodie. And I'm on aseafood diet, so I'm on that diet
and I really do like seafood.I've been a fisherman all of my life.
I've been a surfer all of mylife. I really have enjoyed retirement
(02:58):
at and T was a tough jobin the end, but I tried to
make the best of it and Idid and luckily I eventually got to retire
at sixty years old. So Istill have a good part of my life
left to enjoy life. I loveI have a Pedigo electric bike. I
(03:19):
like riding bikes around our lake. And I love fishing. I love surfing.
And those are some of the loves. And you probably may or may
not know. For the last fortyyears, we've been cruisers. We love
to go on cruises out of Galveston, Alaska, out of Hawaii. You
(03:43):
know a lot of people say,oh, I love the mountains, Well,
guess what, I love the GulfCoast. I have a lot of
people from Utah that come here andcruise with us. We love the Caribbean.
You know, we don't have themost beautiful water here. You have
to go down the South Padre Island, which was my first road trip at
sixteen number one spot for vacations.I'd believe it. Yeah, I love
(04:08):
it. It was my first roadtrip in my fifty seven Chevy with a
couple of my buddies. And youknow, we camped out at Tips City
and South Padre. I call itthe Texas Riviera. If people don't go
there, they haven't experienced the Texasgolf coast. So that's where we're at.
And you know, I've got somefavorites at Peyway. I think they
(04:30):
did a great job on the grandopening. I'm pretty sure to do it.
I loved it. I brought myhusband home a feast that night,
and he just loved it. Itwas just such a great experience. Through
that experience, I learned about thebig cahuna that would be you. I
met your beautiful wife, Karen, who has been with katieist for how many
years? Twenty eight years? Twentyeight retired unbelievable. She went back to
(04:56):
work. He didn't work for theairlines and that way. We traveled to
cal a lot. But then wehad three kids and you can I don't
know, maybe you cannot see myshirt my daughter had made for me.
They gave me that for last Father'sDay. And these are my kids.
My oldest is a blonde, myson is a blonde. And my wife
(05:19):
said, look, I want tohave a kid that eventually looks like me.
That's a brunette. And so wehad a third child, Holly.
Ye who is you know an influenceron Instagram? And let me just stop
you there, because I went toHolly's website or her Instagram and Holly like
(05:40):
me, four boys, one daughter, but she is exceptional. And the
timing that I have you on timis very important because we're going to be
focused on Father's Day like forever. And you are the dad who created such
a confident young lady. I haven'tmet your other kids, but just watching
Holly renovate this gorgeous Nashville home withher husband and those beautiful kids, I
(06:04):
mean, she's got over a millionfollowers. She's phenomenal. She does yeah,
one point three million followers. Ittook about four years to build.
She started in Flugerville and eventually theyremodeled two different homes and eventually they said,
look, I want to move someplacewith four seasons. So they moved
to Nashville and now they live ina neighborhood with a lot of the country
(06:28):
music stars. And they're good friendswith Chip and Johanna, And you know,
Chip and Joanna went a different route. Polly and Brad could have gone
that route, but she said,it's pretty tough on your family to take
that route and to be on TVand to be on radio a lot.
But they have a lot of greatcorporate sponsors, you know, like Home
(06:49):
Depot and Target and huge outfits thatshe wears. Two yes, and she's
a a She loves fashion and she'son you know, I do a chip
review because of her. Every week. Once a week I do a hip
review. I tried different chips.I've been on it for a couple of
years. She put me up toit. She's on it every day from
(07:12):
Monday through Friday. But let metell you, this family is first.
When her kids are at home, she's not on Instagram. Everybody knows that
during the summer she'll take a twoor three month break, but and she
does it. You know, they'reall in school now. But she does
have her priorities and I appreciate that, and I think she said in her
(07:38):
interview, one of the interviews wewatch her every day, family is the
most important thing. Being a momis the most important thing in her life.
And so she has that priority setand so everything is built around their
family. And so I appreciate that. And you know, unfortunately she moved
(07:59):
thirteen hours away with her heart. You know, she was in Fleugerville and
round Rock for about twelve years, but they needed to move and they really
wanted to have four seasons, andthey have moved up in the size of
home that they wanted and they putin a spool. If you ever heard
of a school beautiful, I sawthat being born after backyard. What's the
(08:22):
website, it's our faux Farmhouse, correct, our faux Farmhouse, ou r
f au at farmhouse all one word. And she has about seventy percent women
followers because she does do a lotof fashion and she is a promoter of
different products. But however, Bradis called Brad the Builder. He comes
(08:45):
from a construction brack ground, andyou know they both used to have well,
you know, actually she's a schoolteacher. She got her degree in
elementary education. She's never used itbecause this other career came as so creative.
And Brad used to also have manycareers, and you know, now
they're kind of like entrepreneurs. Theyactually have a place called Urban Ships and
(09:09):
Suites in Franklin of brick and mortar. They started out with the trailer in
Flugerville serving Hawaiian saved ice and customsoft drinks and so and that's where they've
met Hip and Joanna. They've hadtheir food truck there in Magnolia in Waco,
and they just love what they're doing. And like you know, you've
(09:33):
seen and you'll see if you watchher, you'll see some of the things
that they've done in different projects.I think the latest thing was their only
daughter. They completely customize her beautiful, her room phenomenal. The bunk beds
for the boys unbelievable, Oh mygosh. But the thing that I loved
so much when she was talking aboutshe and her husband, as my husband
(09:54):
and I are celebrating I think ourthirty seventh anniversary, she said that it
wasn't always easy, but when welearned to serve each other, that's when
things started getting better. I wasjust like, oh my god, I
love this so much. It's youreally need to all our viewers need to
check her out because she is amazing. And I have to I know mom
(10:16):
is amazing, but I have togive you credit, Tim, and I
want to ask you. With Father'sDay approaching, what is it You've got
a lot of passion for a lotof things as a dad to your three
kids, what do you think wasthe most important gift you gave them?
My time? Definitely my time.Even though I had a pretty demanding job
(10:43):
at at and T, I tookthe time to be with them. Both
of my girls were in Girl Scoutsuntil they became cheerleaders. My son was
in Boy Scouts. He got hisEagle Scout in three poems. I went
on every camp out. I've gotthe Scout leader for over forty years.
(11:03):
It has taught me a lot.And you know, it's a shame because
there's a short window that we haveas parents to do things with your kids
as they're growing up. And let'sface it, when they're eighteen, they're
pretty well gone. I mean theygo off to college. My son served
a mission with the LDS Church fortwo years. Our daughters went off to
(11:28):
college, but you know, wehave a small and I saw so many
dads that put their career in frontof raising their kids. I was the
dad for a lot of kids.I've taught hundreds of kids how to surf,
so much so that the Scouts abouttwenty five years ago, said,
(11:48):
you know what, we need toname me the big Kahuna, just like
Can in Hawaii, a teacher ofsurfing. And I said, you know,
okay, that sounds good to me. I'm not naming myself that.
The Scouts wanted me to become thebig good so I went with that,
and I still loved the surf.I love places like Hawaii, South Padre,
(12:11):
California. When my wife was withthe Airlines, we'd go to California
every month and I served all thegreat places. Surfing is a sport that's
still cool with kids, and that'swhat I love. You know, a
lot of things you know aren't iscool. But you know, when I
talked to people about being a longtimesurf instructor, they said, oh,
(12:37):
that's so cool. Teach me yea. And the biggest thing I can say
about teaching I learned at eight yearsold, when my dad was fishing in
Galveston. I learned. I taughtmyself. I loved the sport. The
main thing is, if people wantto learn how to surf, they need
to start out with a long board. I know it's not cool to have
(12:58):
a longboard, but it's very importantto learn how to surf. And then
you can get shorter boards. Butwe don't have waves unless we have a
hurricane, which I served a lotof hurricanes. A longboard is better for
Galveston, now South Padre, California, Hawaii. Yeah, short boards,
(13:18):
and you know now when you goto the north Shore, you have a
long, thinner board that's not aswide. That's important about learning. But
that's the main thing, you know. I wish and I told the parents
a lot of times on weekends we'dgo surfing, and they were always too
busy working. And like I said, I literally raised some of these kids.
(13:39):
I was their dad, and Iappreciate that. And then like also,
you know, when my girls werein girl Scouts, I was the
dad that went on all the campoutsday I had to have one dad.
Of course, the moms were theleaders, and I, you know,
I was the chaperone dad. Soyou know to me being a parent.
(14:01):
And let me tell you this.It started a long time ago. You
know. I used to be analtar boy in the Catholic Church, so
much so that they asked me togo to Saint Thomas Sarah Saint Thomas Seminary
because I won the Sarah Award. They actually wanted me to be a priest.
And when I found out I couldn'thave a family, I said,
it's not for me. I've dreamedabout having kids and having a family,
(14:24):
and that's the most important thing inour lives. I said to my producer,
I said, Tim is a guy. Because we talked about you on
the morning show, I said,Tim is a guy who you want to
be like you. You you dogetting older so well, you don't get
depressed. You seem like you haveeven more joy as you get older.
(14:48):
And that's why I wanted to shareyou with our viewers. And if you
could say, Tim, one thingto new dads or for moms who might
be able to share the with ourhusband about their kids, what would you
say to new dads three words,it's better outdoors. You got to get
these kids outdoors, get them outcamping. Believe me, I have spent
(15:11):
so many nights camping with my family. It's so important to get them outdoors.
And let me tell you, Ido a lot of fishing, but
I enjoy nature. I don't haveto catch fish. I teach kids to
fish more than I fished myself.I enjoy seeing them catch fish. But
really I have to point out natureis all around us. You know.
(15:33):
We have ducks going by, wehave turtles going by, we have all
different kinds, and you know,I just think it's important to get them
away. You know, as muchas I like social media, I think
there's a time and place for it, absolutely, and you know, we
do have to take and let metell you, when we go on cruises,
we unplug for a week and normallywe clumb cruises a whole week and
(16:00):
it's actually very nice. I mean, I love social media, but they're,
like I said, there's a placefor it, and that would be
a big thing. Take time. And let me tell you this. When
I was growing up, my dadhe worked two jobs to support our family.
We never saw him during the week, but on Saturday we went fishing.
On Sunday we went water skiing afterMass, and that's what held our
(16:23):
family together. Didn't have a lotof money, but you didn't have to
have a lot of money. AndI learned that, you know, from
from my parents of how they raisedus. And I've got an older sister
five years older and a younger brotherfive years younger, and uh, you
know, that's how they they hadus, and they taught me how to
(16:45):
do that. But that'd be thebig thing. It's better outdoors. That
is a saying by the Texas Parksand Wildlife. I love it. Now,
what we're gonna do is wish youa very happy Father's Day, and
then you and me and we canbring our family going to go meet it
Hayway, the new one out onSouth Fry Road, for another dinner together.
(17:06):
And you're just a delight. I'mso glad I got to share you
with my viewers. Well, wonderful. That would be an awesome idea.
Let's do it. My wife wouldlove it. I might even bring Now,
let me tell you I do havea son and a daughter in law
and two grandkids that live here inthe Fullshire area in Cross Greek Ranch.
Maybe I could bring them to andyou can be. My son's very very
(17:30):
smart. He's an executive at WellsFargo and and by the way, also
my daughter in law has a businessnow. She is a registered nurse that
formed a company called Colors That PopBalloons. And for the last two years
while she's staying home with their kidsbefore she goes back to nursing, she
(17:51):
makes wonderful balloon creations and Colors thatPop Balloons Lucy Agbauer, and it's just
as a wonderful creativity. Her lovesto be an artist and she does it
for a lot of the schools,a lot of people, so much so
she had to get a box truckbecause she started doing it for big companies.
(18:12):
And I'd love for you to meetthem too, Jim. I will
write her name down. And I'msure she's got an Instagram too, doesn't
she. She does every she's onInstagram all the time Colors that Pop Balloons.
In fact, I have one ofher cards right here. This is
it right here, and he's areal joy. And she'll be doing that
(18:34):
at least for the next year. But she's kind of feeling like she loves
to work with babies, so she'sthinking that's where she's going to be going
back to to a hospital to work. Now that her son is getting older,
she feels like, Okay, it'stime to get back out. But
I gotta tell you, And maybeI didn't get around to telling you.
(18:56):
My wife quit working and stated homewith our kids while they were growing up.
And I think it's so important thatif you can do that. And
then when her, our youngest Hollystarted going to elementary school, she got
a job at Katist That started hertwenty eight years and she pretty well moved
(19:18):
every time Holly moved until Holly wentto college. She moved with her to
elementary, to junior high and thento high school. And so you know,
and one thing too, I thinkthat helped our kids. You know,
our girls were cheerleaders, our sonplayed football in high school. I
think it's important for our kids tobe a part of something ban sports,
(19:42):
cheerleading, drill team, whatever itis. Don't let them have very much
idle time, because it seems likethat's where we get in trouble. And
so that's what we say. Wesay, get involved and we don't care
what it is. Do something atyour high school especially, and I think
it's really helped our kids get along. And then also one last thing,
(20:04):
I got to say, my daughter, My oldest daughter, Wendy has the
Goat Funny Farm. She did thesix hundred mile journey across Spaine and then
in Abilee she has farm formed thisgoat Funny Farm world. She'll take families
on walks with goats and it's justlike they call it the Camino. It's
(20:30):
a six hundred mile she did itin six weeks, six hundred mile journey
across Spain. And they even havea movie about it called The Way,
which is very good. So I'mgonna have to check out The Way.
I've heard about that, but Iwonder it's very much And she went through
that by herself. I didn't knowshe would ever do that, but that
(20:51):
was you know, your kids surpriseyou. And she really surprised us when
she did that. And then alsoshe likes making. She likes building tiny
homes of all things. So she'sin the middle of building her second tiny
home. You need to write abook, and I want each chapter on
each one of your kids and allthe things that they've accomplished. It's just
(21:11):
a joy to talk with you andshare your life experiences with us. Well
same here. I'm so happy Imet you. I felt like you were.
I didn't really know where you werefrom. I felt like you were
like from Payway at first, andthen I found out you were from Sunny,
my favorite radio station. I said, Oh my gosh, it doesn't
(21:33):
get any better than this. Andlike I said, you did such a
wonderful job making feel everybody comfortable. It was so fun, so fun.
Now I have to ask you beforeI let you go. Your favorite chips.
It's gotta be Zapp's Sweet Creole Onion. They're in the yellow package.
After two years, is my onlynumber ten? I love it dipped into
(21:55):
Kroger sour cream with chimes, andyou could normally only find it now at
the shell gas stations. You can'talready find it. There's a lot of
Zapps, but you won't find theSweet Creole onion. And they're a kettle
chip and they're still my favorite.Excellent Tim, you are just a wealth
of knowledge, a happy man,and I want to say thank you for
(22:17):
joining me and the best Happy Father'sDay. And what are the kids call
Grandpa? Well, they call mePapa, But I'll tell you what.
A good friend of mine, ColinStewart, has a better name for a
dad. A granddad do you knowwhat they call him, No, big
daddy, Big daddy. That's mymom great gis So you're a big daddy.
(22:38):
There you go. And by theway, if anybody ever wants to
listen, I do a weekly broadcaston Tim's underbar Chips to Graham on Instagram
and I have about forty eight thousandfollowers all over the country. We'll make
sure that we get all that informationup. Okay, Tim, that'd be
great. Well, bless you, thank you, and I will see you
(23:00):
at Payway soon. Okay, Well, thank you so much for having me.
You're so good. Take care, love all right, take care,
thank you, Bye bye.
