Speaker 1 (00:01):
This week on iHeart Sinsey.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
As we do each week, we find the best people,
the best events, and the best charities in the Tri
State and bring them to you at this time. Today
on iHeart Cincia, a couple of return guests, two members
of the Vent's Club at Heritage at Miami Bluffs in Mainville.
It's a close knit retirement community that gives back to
those in need. Tom Sullivan and Mike Schultz are here
to talk about their annual Thanksgiving meal program for families
(00:26):
in Warren County.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
And later Cincinnati is just this entire area is full
of collector cars. People in this area have no idea
of the influence, but it's there.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
It's a big, first time event, a vintage classic car
competition to be held at the gorgeous Devou Park next weekend.
The chairman of the event is a longtime car enthusiast
and his lovely bride, Dan and Denise Bosch. They are
here with all the details about how you can enjoy
the finest cars, food and view, and the children at
this event will benefit.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Now on iHeart Cincy with Sandy Collins.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
All right, let's jump in.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
My first two guests are from Heritage at Miami Bluffs
the Men's Club doing some great work for folks in
need in Warren County. Tom Sullivan and Mike Schultz to
the show. Guys, thank you for being here.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
That's nice to be back. Thank you, Sandy.
Speaker 5 (01:20):
Yeah, thanks for seeing us again.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
No problem. You guys have such a great community.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Let me just give us a few minutes here to
talk about your neighborhood. This is basically your neighborhood that
has coalesced to do some great things there in Warren County.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Who wants to talk about that?
Speaker 5 (01:37):
Just in background. Then community started in two thousand and
two and it's grown over the last twenty three years
to three hundred and seventy full capacity home sites. We
have about six hundred people fifty five and over community
and we're located just north of King's Island off of
(01:58):
Route seventy one. But the community has not only grown
and filled out in terms of home sites and folks,
but the activity that we have there in the community.
We have some fourteen or fifteen committees that do great work.
It sounds like a lot of committees, but do great
work with arbor and landscape and social and asset management.
(02:22):
And then we have forty to forty five different clubs,
groups and organizations. So from a living standpoint, it's a
wonderful investment, lots of friends. But from a social standpoint,
you just have a wonderful menu to choose from.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Mike, do you have like a community center there in
the Miami Bluffs? Is there like a common building?
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, we're Heritage of Miami Bluffs. Miami Bluffs is the
community kind of next door to us. But to answer
your question, yes, we have a clubhouse, ten thousand square
foot clubhouse. They have a beautiful outdoor pool and pool
area around it, exercise building and storage, and then we
(03:04):
have a number of smaller little parks or people gather.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, I was just starting to figure out how do
you keep all these groups together and where do you
meet it.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
Let's meet at bill sALS next week and then we'll
go over to their house.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
And No, you've got a nice, big community center and
that makes it a lot easier. We're getting together this
time because you're planning for Thanksgiving. But we'll talk about
how folks are helping out the Warren County community in
just a couple of minutes.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
But let's talk about the charities that.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
You guys raise money for tom they're in Warren County.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
You do meals on wheels and what else they do.
Speaker 6 (03:39):
Warren County Community Services is a very broad based community
group in Warren County, and not only do they help
families in need, they help families with special problems, can't
make rent, can't pay utility bills. They serve about four
hundred thousand people a year in that so what we
(04:02):
contribute to them is a very small part of the
need that they do in Warren County. They have a
meals on wheels program. They also have home emergency assistance
such as helping with utilities and rent. But besides Warren County,
we also work with groups like the King's Food Pantry,
which takes care of people that have food insecurity. We
(04:23):
work with Bernie's Place, which is a temporary homeless shelter
in South Lebanon, which is near us. We work with
Camp Joy, a place for kids summer retreat for kids
that wouldn't have an opportunity otherwise to experience camaraderie and
help them pay for that. And we also work We
(04:44):
talked about this the last time we were with you, Sandy,
and that is the Hamilton Township Police Department.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Hamilton Township is growing and their needs.
Speaker 6 (04:52):
Are growing, but one of the things they needed was
a canine force, so they got a special dog. His
name is Cohn. He came from Germany. He's a German
shepherd and he has been involved in one hundred and
five deployments which resulted in seven arrests in Warren County.
(05:16):
But what they found out is he eats a lot
and the food that he eats isn't just scraps off
the table. The foods that he eats is food that
costs about eighty dollars a bag. So we've been involved
in helping Cohn be fed and trained and we just
had the training officer from Hamilton Township Police Department come
(05:40):
out to visit with our Men's club the other night
and they put on a fantastic presentation about what they
do and as a Hamilton Township resident, we're very happy
to have them. And the other charity that we work
with is one called Family Promise, which is a faith
based organization that provides help for people that are experienced
homelessness in Warren County. And in twenty twenty four they
(06:05):
took care of thirty one families, ninety three individuals. Fifty
two of those were children, and twenty six of those
were the under the age of six. And when I
asked them, I said, what's the average age of the
person that you take care of? They said six. So
what you've got is a lot of single moms that
(06:26):
have a lot of babies and they do a great job.
So we work with all of them to help support
their needs.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
That's a very generous thing you guys do. I'm speaking
with two members of the Heritage at Miami Bluff's Men's Club.
This is Tom Sullivan and Mike Schultz that are here
back for the second year to talk about Thanksgiving and
your big plans this year. You typically work together to
with how many folks that you want to work on
this Thanksgiving project.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Well, we have one hundred and twenty five members and
of those, eighty to eighty five are involved in a
particular Thanksgiving effort because it starts in September. We start
getting our volunteers together, but then our team captains go
out and we make contacts at Kroger's very important supplier
to us, Bob Evans, who provides the hot meal the
(07:21):
day before Thanksgiving, and then we involve our guys in
getting loading into our community staging all of these food items.
Forty five hundred different items will go out on Wednesday
morning and this year one hundred and eight families last year,
one hundred and twenty four families this year, so a
fifteen percent increase and that's all up from our proud
(07:45):
beginning back in two thousand and five when we fed
five families.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
Five families. You start small.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
This is a great example of what you can do
in your own community to make such a big difference,
and a model that's already been developed over the last
twenty years or so, and it can really be replicated
in small communities. If you're interested in doing that with
your community, there's no reason why you you couldn't do
something similar to this, which is to help out the
(08:10):
local charities. Maybe more than one, but these guys have
really done a very good job of getting the community
to feel that close knit feeling.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Yeah, I'd like to just say something about that, because
when you get together with guys, all right, you know,
the guys get together for our meetings, we have a
beverage or two, we might play poker, But when you
start to talk about important things about what's going on
in your community. These guys come out with all kinds
of reasons that they're going to help out. I was
(08:42):
helped out, you know, forty fifty years ago. I want
to make a difference. I want to help improve something
that's going on. And similar to the men's club, we
have a women's club, some hundred ladies in the community
and they do a great job with also a King's
food pantry place called Safe on Maine for those going
(09:02):
through abuse situations. So our ladies also are very involved,
very excited about what they do, and as a men's club,
we try to support them as well.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
This is gonna have a little fun with that question. Say,
if you guys are smoking and drinking and playing poker,
what do you think the women.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Are doing exercising?
Speaker 2 (09:25):
How about you share some of those smokes and drinks
with those gals. Now I'm kidding, just kidding. It's a
great opportunity to be a part of a community. So
you're forming your teams. Now your teams are in your community. Correct,
These are just folks in your area that you're looking for.
You're not looking for outside volunteers, but can people help
you at all with this helping out Warren County Charities.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah, they can.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
And one of the examples is last year we had
twenty seven delivery teams a two person teams. Of those
teams were husband and wife. Four or five of those
teams were grandpa and grandson and granddaughter. So we had
(10:10):
the seven or eight teams that were a little bit unusual.
But one of our guys, Steve Mitchell, who does the
planning for this, he contacted his grandson at Purdue who
he's a junior at Purdue, and Josh has been doing
it since he was little. And Steve said, are you
going to be available this year? And Josh said, you bet, Papa,
(10:32):
I'll be there. I'll really love to do it. So
you get those inspiring kind of responses for your volunteer.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah, and that'll be a memory that he will cherish
the rest of his life.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
You know. We've also found out that people outside the
community are willing to donate through it. And we just
got a nice check from a husband and wife who said,
we know so and so in your community, and they
told us about the great work that you're doing at Thanksgiving.
Please accept our donation to help you out, so this
was over the transom that came in from outside the community.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
And the men's Club is a five oh one C three.
Speaker 6 (11:07):
All of the donations are one hundred percent tax deductible.
One hundred percent of the money goes to where it's
supposed to go. And we've been fortunate enough in the
twenty years that we've been doing this to raise over
three hundred and sixty five thousand dollars.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
It's an astonishing number. It's one community.
Speaker 6 (11:26):
We started small, and we had this discussion the other
night exactly how big do we want to be, and
we said, you know, getting big is not the idea.
Taking care of the people is the idea. So whatever
it takes to get the job done within our parameters,
that's what we're going to do.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
And that's been our success.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
If folks want to get ahold of you, how do
they do that?
Speaker 6 (11:46):
Heritage of Miami Bluff's Men's Club fourteen seventy seven Heritage
Boulevard in Mainville, Ohio, or they can find us on
the internet at the HMBHIA dot org. H mb HOA
dot org homeowners Association.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Gotcha one more time. HMBHOA dot org is a website.
So Tom Sullivan and Mike Schultz, thank you so much
for being here. From the Men's Club at Heritage Miami
Bluff's good luck this year and let us know how
you do it Thanksgiving this year.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
Thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
We appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Coming up Cincinnati is just This entire area is full
of collector cars. People in this area have no idea
of the influence, but it's there.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Concord de Vous, the inaugural Car Show with a View.
That's next on iHeart Sinsey
