(00:00):
We are talking Southeast Texas. Hi, everybody, Harold Man as we are
joined by coach Steve Colazzo with FellowshipChristian Athletes. Of course we know about
FC has been around a long time. Coach. First off, let's talk
about this past week when you hadDabbo Sweeney come in and what a message

(00:20):
he had to those at the BeaumontCivic Center. Absolutely thank you, Harold.
Coach Sweeney came in and he textedhis chaplain at Clemson University this morning
and I told him his name isReggie Pleasant. I said, Coach Swenny

(00:43):
knocked it out of the park andthen some with everybody's positive reaction and were
challenged. And just a guy who'sjust a man of conviction. Plus the
fact that he's a great football coach. And I saw one article this morning
on This Week Online Harrold where heis considered to be one of the Mount

(01:08):
Rushmore coaches of college football without adoubt. And what I really liked about
his message, He talked very littleabout football. His message is more about
life and his relationship with the Lordand just I mean, of course,
obviously he can talk a little football, but he said from the onset he's

(01:30):
not there to talk about Clemson football. He's talking about his life and what
has meant to him exactly. Youknow everybody, he said, everybody knows
him as a Clemson football coach, but he's a lot more than that.
He talks about his faith. Hetalks about how it relates to football,
how it relates to his players, and his in life in general. And

(01:56):
he's a very biblically based guy, very strong man of conviction, and it
shows up in his in his inhis speaking. But more importantly, he
talks about his background and how hedidn't he didn't just come from the greatest
background in the world. And hetalked about that and said, you know,

(02:17):
he basically told us you were there, Harold. You know, if
he can do it, anybody cando it. And I do want to
thank you. I've had the opportunity. I think this is my fourth one
to mc Coach clasm and I wereon a plane together flying from Jack Brooks
Regional Airport the Waterloo, Iowa forthe FCS playoff games with Lamar Football.

(02:42):
Because you've done a lot of tappingto work for the Lamar football team,
and he asked me if I'd beinterested in him seeing the event and absolutely
didn't even think about it the secondtime. And I want to thank you
for letting be part of this.Well, we needed somebody. I kept
juggling MC's Harold up until you cameon, and I wanted somebody with some

(03:05):
stability and permanent And I know onetime you had to miss and you got
Dave Hoffers and he was a greatsubstitute. But I appreciate you. The
crowd, the audience is getting toknow you, My wife is getting to
know you, and just you addjust really some stability to what we do.

(03:28):
In this banquet, we are visitingwith coach Steve Colazo. Fellowship of
Christian Athletes. Tell us about FCA. What's this organization all about? Yeah,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been aroundsince nineteen fifty four and it's a
faith based organization. The vision ofFCA is to see the world transformed by

(03:50):
Jesus Christ through the influence of coachesand athletes. And I tell everybody my
vision is to see Southeast Texas transformedby Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches
and athletes. And last night wasour biggest was our biggest crowd Tuesday night,
and it was five times bigger thanthe biggest bank we ever had.

(04:15):
Of course, a lot of ithad to do with Coach Swinney and having
in the Civic Center, and itwas just a great evening. All I'm
doing is getting positive reviews from peopletexting me and letting me know how much
they enjoyed it, how much theyenjoyed his talk, and just the whole
thing and that that we brought tothe Banque. And you're a big part

(04:40):
of it now, Harold. Iappreciate that organizations need financial help. What
do you need from Southeast Texas forour local chapter of FC eight, Well,
let me tell you what we needit for. And one of the
things we do is we distribute Bibles. We are the second largest Bible distric
organization after the Gideons in the world, and that's what we want to do.

(05:05):
We want to get the Word ofGod into people's hands. And you
know, if I'd have had moretime, I would have been able to
explain this. But there's a guynamed George Barna, and he's like a
poster. You've heard of the galluppole, Well, he's like the gallup
pole for evangelical Christians, and hesays that only five percent, only five

(05:28):
percent of the people in the Americahave a biblical worldview and the Biblical I
don't look at the Bible as theBible, per se. I look at
it as the Word of God,because it calls itself the Word of God.
It's a miraculous book that's been puttogether, and we want to get
it into the hands of people.Everybody there received a Bible last night,

(05:50):
and we want to get that intotheir hands. And the funds that we
use that we raised, that weuse go to getting athletes Bible. F
c A has a student athlete Bible. And then the second thing is we
want to send kids to camp. And our camp that we we send the

(06:13):
most kids to is at Texas Aand m Over in Aggie Land, and
I'm involved in the camp. Butwhat it is a camp. They're there,
the student the athletes are there forlike four days. And the sports
we have there herold we have football, volleyball, boys and girls, basketball,
boys and girls, soccer, boysand girls, golf, baseball,

(06:34):
and softball. And what it isfor four days, they're they're in an
environment, their coaches are Bible believers, they're counselors, which are college kids
their Bible, believe in Christians, and there it has herold what it's got,
it's got a spiritual greenhouse effect ontheir growth. And so when they

(06:59):
get back to their school, whetheryou know it's Neederluan or Westbrook or Hampshire
Finnett, you know they can goin and be salt in light to their
classmates and teammates. I'm not reallybig on grading, but if I had
degrade coach Sweetish speech on Tuesday night, a plus. But there was another

(07:21):
message I just grabbed everybody's heart andthat would be an A plus plus plus
for Infinity coach Klay Davis his messageabout his father and mother in law and
then his own son battling cancer. That is great and what you need to
do. You need to try tofind the podcast about Handle Hard Better.
It comes from coach Lawson who she'sthe women's basketball coach, college women's basketball

(07:47):
coach and she has different things. And Clay's son Jason comes on and the
trials and tribulations that they went throughand how the Lord sustained them and how
they came out of it. Thisis my second time to hear it.
He spoke at our FCA h SoutheastTexas Coaches Clinic breakfast, and we had

(08:13):
we had to get him in frontof everybody at the banquet, so real
quick or nothing. Not to interrupt, but just to let people know coach
Clay Davis Hard and Jefferson guy playedhigh school basketball. There was an assistant
there under Todd Sutherland and now youknow the head coach there. So this
is something that happened right here, right here in our backyard. Absolutely,

(08:37):
he's been there a while. Infact, I coached against Clay when he
played on the state championship team.I was a head basketball coach at Lufkin
Hudson. Clay and doctor Jean Isbelwas on the team and Todd was an
assistant there and they ended up winning. Stay. We met him in the
finals of the Huntington Tournament. Theywere seven to oh. They were six

(08:58):
to oh, and they were sogood they crushed us. You get out
and about a matter of fact,on the day we're doing this chat on
talking Southeast Texas earlier today, youwere at at Laois University with the FCA
Coach of the Year, Pete rossAmandel. Just not not only high schools,

(09:20):
but here the Lamois University. Whatmessage is it? The primary coaches
is that athletes are both. Yes, and so the answer is both.
And we FCA has huddles, anda huddle Harald is like a sports Bible
study. Okay, it's geared. It's open to anybody, but it's kind
of geared toward athletes and coaches. And so what we do. We have

(09:43):
a coaches huddle there. And Iwas at coaches press conference when he first
got hired. When was it lastyear? Last yeah, yeah, and
uh, and I gave him mycard. I told him I'm with FCA.
He says, I want to meetwith you, and he was.
He got here like in January,February something like that. That and we
we hit the ground run and wewere in a coaches huddle going uh that

(10:05):
spring, then again in the fall, and now we're in the we're in
our third semester of this uh ofthis coaches huddle that we're going through and
like I said, it's a coach'spop stack. And by the way,
and I'm sure I don't know ifeverybody knows, but coach was a nominee
for the FCS Coach of the Year. Shopson the Coach of the Year,

(10:26):
and we're talking national national coach. It was one of three. He didn't
win it, but I mean,I think, I think getting the nomination
is a tremendous honor. It reallyis. Again, the talking Southeast Texas
coach Steve Colaso pardoned this guy,uh, and you just stayed right here
in Southeast Texas. He mentioned somethingthat he's pretty cool on your career.

(10:48):
You played four years of football atLamar University, come out of parting a
Goos high school. By the way, what's the only sports you've never coached?
Pardon me, well, I said, by the way, what's the
only coach? You've never been ahead coach? I've never been ahead football
coach, but ed I've been aheadcoach of five sports, but I played
college football and I've never been ahead. I've been assistant, but I've never

(11:11):
been here. What's it mean toyou when an athlete or even a coach
comes up to you a year, two years, five years, ten years
after you've met with them through FCAand says, thank you, you changed
my life. Well, you know, and the whole scope of things.
And coach brought this out greatly atour banklet coach Swiney did you know James

(11:39):
In the book in the Bible,James four fourteen says life is like a
vapor. We're here and we're gone. And I tell young people this all
the time. I don't care ifyou live to be a hundred. We're
not here long compared to eternity. And so and when we're talking about this
and the impact that we have, the eternal consequen winstance, and how a

(12:01):
kid and the impact they make thatyou can make in people's life for eternity,
because our body's going to decay oneday, we're going into grave,
but our soul is going to liveforever somewhere. Well, our final message,
how can folks help you an FCA, Well, they can get in
touch with me. We have aFacebook. I'm on Facebook. Go to

(12:24):
Steve Colazzo on Facebook's and me afriend request. I do a podcast on
Tuesday mornings and Friday mornings last aboutthirty minutes. My messages on Sunday or
are on there. You can helpus by being a volunteer. I got
a text last night after banking fromon the coaching guys that I used to

(12:46):
coach against, and he wants tobe a volunteer financially. You can reach
out to me on Facebook. We'llsit down, I'll go over our ministry
vision, some of our financial goals, talk to you about how you can
maybe be a part of us financially. Coach Steve Calazo, FCA Fellowship Christian

(13:07):
Athlete, thank you so much fortaking part in our program this week.
I really appreciate it, and ifyou extend it, I'll be back there
next year. Behind that Mike, thank you for what you do. Harold.
