can't come in here without buying a half a truckload
of fresh annuals because they are completely. Stocked AND i
(00:20):
said this every time we come, here But i'm telling
you the. Truth if you walk through the, door close
your eyes in and open up when you get out,
here you would swear It's Mother's day. Weekend it is.
Phenomenal and everything is twenty to sixty six percent. Off
and guess, what no limit on the. Mulch you can
buy as many bags as you. Want twenty percent. Off
that's pretty, nice Huh when you say, that that's all
has to do With. Mark paul didn't want to do,
(00:41):
that But mark, did so that's what they're. Doing twenty
percent off on mult but twenty to sixty six percent
off everything in. Stock you can't beat. It and there's
still plenty of time to. Plant and this is happening
at all four, locations so you can go to all
four of, them but come and see. Us we're gonna
be here, again LIKE i, said until, noon and The
Columbus Rose club is here and they're going to have
a rose show from one in till, Four so stop
(01:04):
out and check that. Out you can shop a couple
hours beforehand and then go check out The Columbus Rose
club The Rose, show AND i think you will appreciate
that as. Well you, know one of our guests that
we've had on this show for several years now when
we're always at the here At oakland is from The
Franklin soil And Water Conservation. District and you know What
i'm talking, About corey Said. Max she is their public
(01:26):
outreach coordinator and she is sitting to my left and
good have.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
You good to see.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
You it's been a long. TIME i mean you've been coming.
Here what you've been doing? This what three or four?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Years? Yeah three?
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Years and before THAT i can't think of the young
lady's name we used to talk to a little, Bit Sarah, Sarah, yeah,
yeah for a little, while but you've been doing, it
and of course we kind of kid you because you
do really unusual things besides what you do For franklin
soil and. Water as In, chicky what is The Prairie chicken?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Dance went to The Prairie festival watch mating. Dance, yeah very.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Exciting what do you, Think.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Mike, no but yeah they. Did they spent their whole
vacation doing. That you you went To, colorado it was one.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Day, yeah it's part of a much larger trip To colorado.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
To see, more you, know like mountain scenery.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
More it's normally not just a prairie. Chick.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, no not a full week of prairie.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Chick and so in a couple and now the next
one coming, up you're going To North, California Northern california
to see what?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Bird, yeah so we're going to the redwoods to see
a marbled murror it fingers.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Crossed oh we all know, that, right marbled Merely. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
No they were actually one of the last breeding birds
in THE us to have their nesting habits.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Discovered can you guess? Why? Why because they're about one
hundred feet up in the air on the branches of.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
The redwood, trees so you don't see.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Them, yeah but they're a little. Seabirds they're like the
size of a football and they're nesting way up.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
There so the best way to see them is wake,
up you, know around like four thirty am in the
morning and typic gold bird stuff and look up and
try to catch them flying from The Redwood forest to
the coast Of california to go fishing for the.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Day so you catch them when they come out of
the trees and headed out to the, ocean and then
when they come. Back, yep, Wow, okay what else you
going to do while you're out?
Speaker 3 (03:19):
There we'll go hiking in the, mountains you, know See
Redwood National. PARK i really want to see a tide.
Pool i've never seen a tide pool. Before you, know
it's like the an enemies and octopus and things like.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
That, yeah and check out some of the micro. Bruise, yeah.
Definitely WELL i knew you were going to do. That
gave us a report that time from The Papaw.

your newsletters and all. That you guys do a great.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Job we're doing all kinds of, stuff but more and
more stuff every year.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
You and you can tell because you're just so much.
Information so right, now what are we up?
Speaker 3 (04:16):
To, yeah so right, now probably our most popular program
is Our Community Backyards rebate. Program, yes so you can
take an online course which we refreshed at this. Year it's,
interactive so you're not just staring at a screen clicking.
Through you actually got to got to do some, things
move some things around the. Screens it's a really nice
way to learn how to, compost install a rain. Barrel
(04:36):
you learn a little bit about native plants and invasive,
plants and then at the end you're eligible for a
fifty dollars voucher on native, plants compost bins or rain.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Barrels so.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Nice you could come out here To oakland and grab
fifty dollars or more of native plants and get that
money right back in your.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Bank and ALL i have to do is a little.
Training mm hmm yeah on my webs on my, computer.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yep. Cool, yeah you can do it all the phone,
too mm hmm on my.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
PHONE i, can BECAUSE i can't see any on my.
PHONE i got to use.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
It if you have a screen, reader it's compatible with.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
THAT i can't see anything. THAT i have to have
something that size are, bigger that's. Fair OTHERWISE i. Can
you just can't do. It so what it happens when
you get? Old what are you shaking your? Head what? About? Yeah,
yeah you're right run as you get. Old as you
are talking With corey Said, Mac now you told me
something about an invasive trade in program you're. Doing.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah so we just opened this to quite a few
communities Around columbus this. Year where you can cut down
a calorie pear. Tree we have some other species in there,
too like bush honey, size tear that, out replace it
with something, else probably a native, plant and will reimburse
up to one hundred dollars on whatever new tree you.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Buy no, Kid, yeah so how DO i prove THAT
i did?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
That what DO i have To, yeah you have to
take some. Pictures take a picture of the.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Invasive plant that's been removed and then a new plant
that's been planted in its.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Place no, kidding that's about. It that's.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Outstanding and for every, honeysuckle you do that, Too so
it's just.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
One per household right.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Now, okay mm.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Hmm, interesting pretty good. Deal, yeah and you can dig it.
Out you can have someone come and do it for.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
YOU i.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Can and you can learn more about invasive plants on your.
WEBSITE i mean you have all like the all the
plants listed the state Of. Ohio well DO i see they?
Were what's coming up this? Year? Privet? Yeah is that
going to happen in the twenty twenty?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Six, yeah it's actually being banned for. Sale so that's another.
One it gets carried pretty. Far the fruits get carried
by birds and tend to take over the forest under.
Stories so we're starting to see that pop up as a.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Problem. YEAH i see a few other plants are on
the watch list and burning bushes on that mm.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Hmmm, yeah that's.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
One it is definitely a, problem like down In cincinnati.
Area and we're kind of just starting it, too starting
to see it become a problem here In, columbus So
Darby cree has some.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Some infested areas with really yeah that burning Bush Atlanthus.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Wow talking With, corey Said. Mack of, course she is
our representative From franklin Soiln Water Conservation district and their
website Is FRANKLIN swcd dot. Org it's absolutely. Outstanding people
need to sign up for your newsletters and all you
guys send out because it really is great.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Information oh, yeah and it's just once a. Month we're
not like solicit.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Don't get buy, anything don't get hammered with a lot of.
Emails but you do get that and it's all great.
Information you. Know with all the rainfall we've had this,
BRING i guess you've had a lot of calls with
flooding for. Drainage oh, yeah got to get that. Corrected mm.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Hmmm.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah we try to help folks as much as we
can with you, know budget friendly, options especially for. DRAINAGE
a lot of, TIMES i, mean.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Our probably biggest answer we give to folks is.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
If it's not threatening a, structure if it's not completely
killing your, grass like it's probably just part of how
the drainage on your property. Works is you might have
some standing, water you, know for twenty four. Hours if
it's there for seventy two hours or, more that's when
we start looking for a better solution to help that drain,
faster because that's when mosquitoes start to start to breed in.
There is that seventy two hours not a good?
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Thing, no not at, all not at. All do not want?
Speaker 1 (08:11):
That, no you. Don't don't like those? Mosquitoes do you
recommend like the mosquito dunks and the bits and that we?
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Do, yeah so those are it's a product you can.
Get you can put them in your rain, barrels, right
you can.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Herb bad, fountains, yeah, ponds.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Put them pretty much.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Anything it's a bacteria that naturally exists in the soil,
already so it's something. Natural it's safe for pets and.
People if you're trying to get like dragonflies and stuff
like that in the, pond you might not want to
use it because it can't affect dragon. Flush, yeah it
can affect little dragonfly nymphs and some other. Things but,
yeah like a rain barrel or, yeah like a ponded
(08:46):
area in your yard where you don't want any insects in.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
There it's really, helpful.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Cool talking With, corey Said. Mac and then we're going
to take a. Break we come, back we'll talk about
one of my favorite. Programs she is the Police. Coordinator
she gives out tickets if you don't clean up after
your dog and we'll find out, why and we'll talk
about raptors as. Well broadcasting live today From Oakland, Nursery Oakland.
Avenue stop, out say, hello be here till. Noon we
got a roast show going on at one, o'clock so
(09:13):
you want to check that out as. Well and everything's
on sale twenty to sixty six percent off here in
all of The, oakland so get out and take advantage
of that as. Well it's all happening here on news
radio six'. Ten wtvn we are broadcasting live Today From.
Oakland nursery stop out and. Say hello we're At the,
columbus location and of course they. Look Great It's mother's
(09:33):
day weekend here and everything is twenty to sixty six
percent off and you're gonna. Love it lots of, folks
here lots of baskets, going out and if you haven't, planned,
YET no i say it Looks Like mother's Day On father's.
Day weekend? How's, that no it Looks Like mother's. Day
weekend so if you walk, in here you would Swear
It's mother's. Day weekend but they do That On father's
(09:55):
day weekend to make it equal for moms. And fathers
right there, You go but it Looks Like mother's. Day
weekend so stop out and say hello and see all
the great annuals and perennials and the whole, nine yards
and you get To, meet Corey. Said mac and you
All know Corey From franklin Soil And Water. Conservation district
and of course you're still doing a. Raptors, THING yes.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
I am make sure of the Bring. ONE ray I
know i need to bring on one of. These Days
but i'm trying to.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Figure out i'm trying to train one of them to
talk or like, say something Because if i'm gonna bring
them on, the radio like gott to do more than
just sit there and.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Look pray can't, do that?
Speaker 3 (10:28):
CAN you i.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
DON'T know i. DON'T know i.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Can, try okay what kind of raptors you?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Work with we have some everything from the smallest to.
The biggest so we have The little, american custrels which
are smallest bird of prey they're. A, falcon yeah and
they live out in more like. Rural areas they hunt
a lot of insects and small rodents all the way
up to our, Bald, eagle audrey who is one of
(10:52):
the largest birds of prey we Have.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
In. Ohio cool and then isn't it Fun in ohio seeing? Bald,
eagles oh it's finny fields around there's a. Bald eagle
it's like. Something's wrong you feel like, you're, like oh what's.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Going, on yeah it's LIKE when I when i was,
a kid it was, you know there was like one
body in the neighborhood and, you're, like oh, my gosh it's.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
So cool now it seems like about fifteen.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Years ago.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
I'm not going to say my age.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
On air, it's okay just just checking Talking, with corey
said mac And From Franklin county Soil and water And
it's FRANKLIN sw cd. Dot org so when you first
came on, THE show i picked up right away on
some of that you, personally oversee and we've talked about
it ever since because the facts that you threw at
(11:41):
me just kind of blew. Me away it's the Pickup
pet WAISTE or. Pup program and when, you started, you
know and we talk about, you know water runoff and
keeping the fertilizers in your, own yard not putting the
grass clippings out on the street and all that to
keep it in your, own, Property right but then when
you brought up the thing about the, DOG waste i
(12:04):
was just totally. BLOWN off i could. Not believe, of
course we'll be bringing up all the. Time now and
THE reason i DO because i think it's. Pretty important
but you have a Program In franklin COUNTY called pup
and it's to bring awareness of folks of cleaning up
after your dog is the. Bottom line and if they
don't clean up after, their dog what's. The.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Results yeah so the biggest problem with that that we
can actually keep pretty decent track of is. Eqal line
so the nasty bacteria that causes intestinal distress in people
is present in our waterways in measurable levels and.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
It is not of. Human origin so if you RUN
the dna, on it this. Equal it it's.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Into waterways it's not, from people so it's not from
sewage from. Our households it is actually from. Our dogs
and it's because there are so many dogs in? This
county do you know how many dogs Live In? Franklin,
county No but i'm ready ninety one thousand, of them.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Three hundred and ninety one thousand Dogs In franklin.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
County, alone yeah so we got about one dog for every.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Three people.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Grand you have, a dog, Right there i'm doing. My
Part no, elliott dogs? No dogs? All right so he
kind of equals things out because. You have so we
got we got almost four hundred thousand dogs in the County.
Of frankly just, kills me, All right so hit us
with a really hard Statistic because mike's been waiting for. This,
(13:30):
one so how many pounds have? Dog poop they were
allowed to?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Say, that yeah okay in some in. Some, jurisdictions okay there's.
One jurisdiction i'm not allowed to say the. WORD poop
i won't pick.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
On.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Them Yeah well i've been told. We're lads so. Dog
poop how many pounds of dog poop per month do
you Find In franklin county is laid onto the soil?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Per, MONTH actually i would have to calculate. Per month
ok what is it?
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Per year her? Day day, that's right as a day
of figure. Her, day everybody, get ready four hundred Thousand Dogs.
Franklin county how many pounds of dog poop per day
is distributed on?
Speaker 3 (14:11):
The soil one hundred and forty? Seven tons what?
Speaker 1 (14:19):
That is and, that's yeah THAT'S what i said the
first time you told. Me THAT just i think it
was even smaller than that at, the TIME just i
bop fell off.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
My, chair yeah and that's averaged out because, you know
there's really big dogs and really. Small dogs so we're
saying like about three quarters of a pound of wasist.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Forty seven tons? Per. Day.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Wow wow, and yeah so dog poop it's a little
different than like wildlife poop because our wildlife are eating
things that, are, outside right and a lot of times
there's a lot. Of vegetation so even something like a
raccoon that might eat, some meat, you know, they're omnivores
they're eating a lot of.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Like berry we.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
All agreed. Raccoon's scarish it's like that you can use their,
fingers hands like they could tie your shoes together and stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Like, that yeah pull, prank salt you.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Know it, but yeah their waste does not contain nearly
as much super.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Raccoon, comes up, says cool don't. Do, that well, they
might you. Never know so one hundred and forty seven
tons of dog poop a Day In.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Franklin county it's super high, in protein super high in nitrogen.
As well so a lot of people think when they
hears nitrogen, and that, you, know oh it could be
FERTILIZER if i leave it out in. The yard but
it's so high, and nitrogen it's going to burn. Your
plants so like if you, overfertilize them that's why, your
grass like it'll turn brown if you leave the dog
poop sitting.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
On, there yeah so you you picked that up and
then we put it in. The trash. Mm hmm so
it goes to. The, Landfill correct so the landfills then
are set up so that water runoff doesn't. Go, anywhere
yes that.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Is correct, so Yeah Our swiko lane landfill down on
the south end of the city is actually, completely contained
so any water that is running off, of that there's
actually very little water that. Runs off they work really
hard to keep, run off but it is going into a.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
CONTAINMENT system i actually spent time talking with one of
the Original mister rumkies and he was explaining how folks
don't understand when they do set up, these landfills what
is involved to find the right location with the, water
runoff the underground, water tables to make sure it doesn't
do that before they actually establish. A landfill and there's
(16:29):
a lot involved with that because it's all you want,
to basically like, you said keep it contained in that.
One area so if we're sending it in, our landfills it, stays.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
There yep, so yeah nothing breaks down in, the. Landfill
right there's not enough oxygen for bacteria to survive in,
the landfill so nothing and there's really, breaking. Down right
it's so once we cap, the landfill, you know it's
a landfill for, a very very very, long, Time right
so it's it's a little unfortunate we don't have better
(16:59):
place to put all that, dog, Waste right and there
are some companies that will take it to an industrial.
Composting facility so a lot, of times like if you
have live in a condo association WITH an hoa and
there's like those designated dog, poop canisters a lot of
times the company's picking those up are taking them to
compost them somewhere at a.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Very very, high heat so it kills off.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
All the, nasty bacteria, h okay and, then yeah they
can use that Compost.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
For so sometimes you go on the internet and everything's
correct on. The internet it's the truth all, the time
and you find the dog or cat waste composters for your,
own yard yes?
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Or, no, Yes, okay yeah those do seem to work.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Pretty well you have to be really careful how much you,
put in so there's a limit of how much can go, in,
There right but in that case you're actually adding usually
a tablet that has bacteria that'll break.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
That down so those. Are good. M h I thought
i always thought that was kind of weird to.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Do, that yeah cat don't think it works for, cat
waste just because of the.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Whole litter, dog, waste yes, m hm so katz continue
to send that to.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
The, Landfill yeah and if anyone has a dog, waste
composter please reach out, to me like on our website
and get in touch with ME because I loved i
just want to see one. In action i've never actually seen.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
It and how.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
They, work, yeah cool curious.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
About it so if, they do if, they do go to,
the website they can find you.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
On there yes.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
They can and Then it's franklin S w cd. Dot
Org it's Corey. Said mac what was?
Speaker 5 (18:29):
Your Name?
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Gas, AWAY yeah i was trying.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
To think of THAT because i was going to introduce you,
That way, Corey. Said mac and she will help to
answer all your questions as all everybody does their.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Great status, oh yeah and you can always you can
call us on the. Phone too we take a lot
of pride and like if you call us during, open
hours a real person is going to answer and try
and get you in touch with a professional who can help.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
You out How the native plant? Sale go oh it.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Went, great yeah we had great success. This year most
of THE plants i planted from the plant sail are doing.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Really.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Well good, you know there's always a couple to die
because they're, so young like the.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Live stakes, but yeah overall went really well.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
This year did you find something to do so you
didn't have to help load? Those?
Speaker 2 (19:08):
TREES no i actually helped out this year.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
THIS year i was there this year people with order
pick up and bundling up all.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Those trees there.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
You go do you protect your eyes when you're handling?
Those raptors.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
You, KNOW what i think you're actually so that is a.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Common, misconception okay the business end of a bird of
prey is actually.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
The feet they'll peck your, feet off.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
So no they don't like the whole pecking really doesn't do.
Very much like your beaks aren't. That strong it's their
feet with the big talents, on them can puncture and which.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
The talent you. Got it don't worry about a pecking. Your, eyes,
Yes yes so if you ever like your skin off with,
a talent.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Yea forever whatever reason you, have to, you know like
untangle a raptor out of a fence or some zany situation,
like that you want to make sure those feet are
secured because that's what they're going to be going at.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
You with now there are some. Great information keep done, In. Mind,
Grant yeah Corey. Said mac it's always a pleasure, Appreciate.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
You sunder to come out Here to oakland and chat with.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
You guys do a, great job and we appreciate you
spending time. With us one hundred and forty seven tons.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
A day throw, it, away please please throw it away
so we can swim in the. River safely you?
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Got it what? Is it one thing at table swalt salt.
It ruins, what.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Yeah a tablespoon of, salt ruins five gallons of.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Fresh water, forever forever never. Goes, away yep.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Always there sweep up your salt in the. Wintertime too
this girl has so.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Much information go to. Their Website it's franklin swcd. Dot
org sign up for. The newsletters you'll you'll get all
this on a, monthly basis and you can also Talk

More From. Oakland nursery we're At The oaklan Nursery On.
Oakland avenue we're gonna be here. Till noon here on
news radio six TO. Ten wtvn we are talking Yardening
(20:57):
at Oakland, And Nursery Oakland. Park avenue stop out and
say hope we're gonna be. Untill noon big sale, going
on you know, that, already right twenty to sixty six
percent off everything, in stock everything in. Stock now if
you come out today and come out, right away there's
a bonus for you when you come. Out here if you,
like roses or even if you don't, like roses by
(21:17):
the time you see, the show you'll probably. Like roses
Because The Columbus rose club is having a roase show
today from one to till. Four o'clock and to tell
us more about it is the Rose Of Are? You
Married the rows Of Your? Wife's Life, jim harring, Good morning, Good.
Morning ron i'm good to have you on. With us.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
Thank you i'm a member Of The Columbus. Rose club
and how.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
Well you've been a member since Nineteen eighty?
Speaker 5 (21:47):
Why WHY because i love roses, And guys i've been
growing a lot. Of Roses The Columbus rose club actually
started in about nineteen. Thirty Six, gus reiner who Who was,
paul's father was one of the, original members and that's
why we've always had a close association Between the. Rose
(22:08):
clubs we've had a Rose show i'm not sure exactly,
how long But Since World war two we've had them
at different Locations, in columbus like At the Park. Of
roses we used to have them in days past at,
shopping centers but now we were really looking for a
(22:31):
place to host the annual, ROAD show i don't know
five or ten, years Ago And paul, reiner, said well
we have an education building that you could use for the.
Road show and that's what we've done for the past
seven or, eight years and the road show. Is today
anyone can enter the. Road show, in fact we encourage
(22:51):
people who grow roses to bring some to the show
and we would help them enter the. Different classes it
is a show, for, competition right some of us who
grow roses like. The competition but you can just enter
the bring roses to show them to. The public the
(23:11):
entries were from seven in the morning, till eleven and
then starting, at eleven we have a panel, of judges
six judges from around the state who are judging the.
Different classes and by one o'clock the judging will be
done and the show will be open to the public
from one. Until four the reason it isn't open longer
is that roses don't hold their perfection, very long a lot,
(23:35):
of them and so we have to close down after.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
One day we close down after. Four, o'clock okay so
when were? These harvested most of them in the last
couple of days or they tried to do.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
THE well i cut a few of mine. This morning
it was still raining a little bit Up in MARION where,
i live but most of them were. Cut yesterday some
people will cut them two or three four days, in
advance and keep them in, a refrigerator and they will
hold depends on the variety and how many petals. They
have if a rose has thirty or forty or even,
(24:08):
fifty petals it will hold a lot longer than one.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
That, only, has say.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
Twenty petals so.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Are the categories based on the hybrid t Grand of?
Flora flora how you? Do that? They are that's.
Speaker 5 (24:18):
Exactly right all of the different classes, of roses including
climbers and what we call old, garden roses they're. Divided
up the heritage roses divided up starting in eighteen, sixty
nine because that is arbitrarily that's the date of the
first Hybrid T la france was hybridized in eighteen, Sixty
(24:42):
nine so anything after eighteen sixty nine is considered kind
of a modern, heritage rose and anything, before that including
all of the old, species roses are the really old,
garden roses the. Antique ones we give different prices for.
Different categories everybody has a favorite whether they like TO
(25:04):
grow i personally like to grow. Hybrid tes the only
problem with hybrid es is they do take more care,
than say. Shrub roses or, landscape roses and the disadvantages with.
Hybrid tes you don't have as. Many blooms if you
grow a, shrub rose you might have fifty blooms on,
a bush Whereas if i'm growing a, HYBRID ty i
(25:24):
might have three or four or five booms on. A, Bush.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Right so, you know you say you've been doing this
since the, early eighties have YOU seen, I mean i
look BACK when i first started this in the garden
center business back in the seventies, early seventies and, you
know we used to do a ton of, POTTED roses
i mean just a ton hybrid tes mostly and granded,
fourth four butN and. Climbers also and then you saw
(25:49):
roses kind of. Fade away folks started not wanting to
put the time or trouble too. Much hassle they died
back over. THE winter i didn't mulch, them right whatever.
May BE and i FELT like i saw roses kind,
of disappear and we weren't selling them like we used to,
sell people you know. Kind of and THEN and i
know some rose lovers don't like mentioning. Knockout roses but
(26:11):
when they came back on, the march when that. Came
out it seemed to me that that kind of, brought
roses the interest of roses back into the garden a.
LITTLE bit, I mean i felt like it kind of
fired it. Back up and now we're seeing hybrid teas
and grandi floorism now being, SOLD more i think in
the garden centers than there was in. The past and
(26:31):
of course rose breeders and you're well aware of that
breeding more and more for disease resistance and all. Of
that so have you seen that change over.
Speaker 3 (26:39):
The.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Years absolutely and those of us who really like, hybrid
teas we at first we kind of bad mouthed they
knockout type roses because they didn't have long stems and
didn't have a hybrid. Tea form but thank Goodness That
bill radler came out with the knockout and it has
(27:02):
spread because, you're right interest in roses of all types
now has an increase because.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Of, that yeah and we're seeing that in all the
garden centers that folks are, Now, saying okay and maybe
and you probably don't want to, hear that but maybe
actually even growing them as an, annual WELL but i
mean you think about, it sometimes, you know if they
don't come. By that if it doesn't come back in,
The spring i'll just buy another one and plant it
again and enjoy it through. The, SEASON well i encourage
(27:30):
them to do winter protection and, all THAT but i
mean actually saying if, it does, it does and if,
it doesn't, it Doesn't and i'll continue to enjoy it
and go.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
From there, you're right we do lose roses. EVERY year
i have about five hundred roses at.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
My home that was my. Next QUESTION and.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
I probably LOSE and, i, PROBABLY yes i probably lose
twenty or thirty, a year EVEN though i do. EVERYTHING
right i try to protect them. VERY well I mean
i mulch. Them in, in fact the, HYBRID tees i
even use the OLD fashioned i call them old fashioned.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
Styrofoam Rose cons, REALLY still.
Speaker 5 (28:07):
I have about four hundred of, those cones AND so
i use them, every YEAR but i still lose.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
A few it's.
Speaker 5 (28:13):
Because of, our climate and not all roses are bred for.
Winter hardiness even some of the ones that we rose
grower or the exhibitors love are not very, winter hardy
and so we buy new ones. Each Year paul reiner
was telling me that they didn't order as many like
hybrid tea roses, this year but they've sold out essentially all,
(28:37):
of them AND so i mean that's he was encouraged
that seemed to be buying them more.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
That, they're, BACK well, i hope. So, hopefully anyway five,
hundred roses, oh, my yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
Most of them are hybrid tees, and floorabundas but probably
twenty five percent or either shrub roses or climbers and
quite a few miniature roses.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Many floors, all right so big question for you. Black
spot how do you Keep black spot? Under?
Speaker 5 (29:04):
Control well on the, HYBRID tes i spray every, seven
Days and i'm not advocating that because the, average gardener
if you spray with a fungicide about every ten to,
fourteen days you probably will be able to Keep black.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Spot away But black spot.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
Loves roses mainly hybrid teas, and florabundas but also, shrub
roses and so a lot of, the roses like you
say that are bred now for disease resistance are pretty
much resistant to. Black spot but the ones we've had
around for more than ten or, twenty years you have to,
spray THEM and i use. A fungicide i don't use.
(29:48):
An insecticide fungicides are much less toxic to the environment than,
the insecticides so that's THE way i keep black.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Spot. Away thanks interesting Talking About jim herring as a
