month Of. April it's been a slow it's, cool but
it's gonna warm. Up trust, me we're gonna get there
and we're gonna be all running like crazy trying to
get everything planning for the spring. Season time for one
(00:20):

great overall nice. Guy he's a well known, writer, speaker.

landscapers and growers and retails in The north and The,
south traveling the world sharing his passion for. Plants you,

apple Arm. Inage good, morning, Sir.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Good, morning young. Ron how are we doing? Today it
Is april, apparently and uh some of us are still
trying to shovel. Snow others are planting their, plants so
it's a grand time to be.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Alive, Well i've seen pictures as you sent me at
some teasers from your bet your, garden and, man you're
about three weeks ahead of, us jeezel.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Peace oh, yeah WELL i think YOU i know. That you,
know my family is From, canada in The toronto area
and they had a good old Fashioned canadian winter this
year and it is still cold and, they're, yeah you
guys are a little bit further behind than. Normal or
we're you, know we've had a nice cool. Spring it's been.
Foundous that's why the garden looks so. Nice but, yeah
(01:47):
where are we did ahead of?
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You, well you, know And i'll Take i'll take the
winner we, had AND i like the cooler. Spring i'd
rather have a, gradual, yeah gradual warm up and to
jump into, something you, know seventy degrees and the end
Of march and then all of a sudden that the
big fall, off you, know sometime minute Late april and
take everything. Out So i'll take it the way it.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Is we're doing just, fine thank. You and we're so
fortunately able to walk around a, garden have a cup
of tea and see what.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Doing so if we come there to tour your, garden
is it a bed and? Breakfast we get to sleep
in your?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Basement, Well i'll take a hole SINCE i have no.
Basement but, yeah come on. Over we can find a
place for you, know where is? It EXCUSE i got this,
outdoor little little deck that we can stick all sorts
of people.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
On, Yea and of course you can now cook for.
Us that's.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
RIGHT i got my new, toy my little, griddle SO
i can cook all fit the pancakes and eggs and
bacon And keisan diaz and all sorts of goodies for.
You come on, over we're.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
READY i don't care about the pancakes and the. Eggs
i'll just take the. Bacon.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yeah, well you, know a pound of bacon at a
time and it, disappears like you, said a few. Hours,
yeah you, know, Payber we shouldn't be doing that too. Often.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Wow, yeah AND i saw that. PICTURE i, said, whoa
this is too much talking with Doctor Allan armitage Is
his website Is Alan armitage dot. Net, now you just
got back from the trials on The west. Coast anything
out there you see that's up and coming that really
caught your. Attention, well there's a bunch of.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
NEWS i, mean this is this is really good That
i'm able to get out there to see the breeders
and they all are exhibiting for plant they're going to
be coming out next. Spring, really but so, yeah there
are terrific some terrific. Fernuals like there's some really good
fox gloves out there that are just flowering beautifully straight,
upright and they all the colors they have flowered at
(03:40):
the same. Time i'm REALLY i really impressed with the fox.
Loves there was some new flocks out there in the
perennial side of the world that all sort of woodland
flocks times you, know some of the earlier flocks so, shade,
taller but a lot of. Color and certainly in the annual, side,
goodness gracious whenever and run out of petunias and calibricola
(04:03):
and ah my, goodness all sorts of goodizinias and. Miracles
so now there's a lot of interesting things and of
course all these companies are what they're trying to, do
is they ty petunias you can. Breed but having said,
that they're always filling in holes and gaps for the,
grower so they have the next pink that goes with the,
white that goes with the. Red and from the from
(04:24):
the consumer point of, view they're just getting.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Better, well the petunia plant readers are trying to keep
up with the. Hydrange your plant, readers.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Oh my, goodness rations. Me, well the, hydranges you, know
not the old mop head sites are not some of
my favorite, plants AND i, that but the panicle, hydranges
now those things are quite quite. Special and they have
managed to take that big lime light. Thing we started
with five of the, plant but big and and you,
(04:51):
know get them down about two three feet. Tall so
there's lots of fabulous choices in hyde ranges and oak
leaves and other things as. Well but the aneotypes are
certainly the easiest ones for most consumers to really get.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
At, yeah no. Doubt talking with Doctor Allan, armitage his
website Is Alan armitage dot. Net you sent me a
picture of A euphorbia that you. Saw this kind of
a shark truce. Color that thing is. Gorgeous.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Holy, Yeah so this is a new you KNOW u
forms there kind of we see a lot of different.
Ones this IS i Think Sahara Sahara desert is coming
out next, next next. Spring but the flowers on this
bright yellow as you saw that, picture bright yellow and
covered the entire. Plant now, AGAIN i have no. Idea
(05:38):
remember we're looking at display modes and we're looking at
this new. STUFF i have no idea how well we'll
do in the. Garden but it wouldn't be any worse
than the OTHER u, form and it certainly potentially could
be a whole lot. Better but something wasn't.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
It, yeah that's a that's. SPECTACULAR i mean that color is.
Phenomenal it's got that little eye in the cineer of it.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Was and it really was. Color that was a PICTURE i.
Took so, yeah it's it's kind of.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Cool, YEAH i love. It talking with Doctor Alan, armitage
how about you know you're looking at the plant breeders out,
THERE i, mean are they are they FOCUSING i mean
three Things i'm looking at? Here are they focusing more
on foliage? Colors because that seems to be really coming
on strong obviously flowers low. Maintenance are you seeing them
working in more native selections native ours as they're doing
(06:23):
these as? Well?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Well when you think about the, natives and if you
start looking through plants and all, there there are a
handful of very most natives in the annual side of, things,
Right BUT i mean every annual we have is is,
natives so somewhere other than. Here so there's no work
to speak of in natives in the annual. Side in
the prenia, side, sure there's some flocks that are being worked.
(06:48):
ON i think it's going to be, really, really really good.
Stuff you, know there's a number of other you, know
the choreopsis and the gulardias and those kinds of. Things
they've been working on those because native is. Important it's
not just a marketing. Point people now have understood, that you,
know putting some natives in their garden or it just
makes them feel better ecologically. Significant you, know pollinators are
(07:13):
going to pollinate those as they're pollinating other plants as.
Well so these, guys these these, people the companies have
realized that natives just aren't a little just not, Folly
they really are important to. People so, yeah we're seeing,
that and we're certainly seeing a ton of marketing around
as you know in your. Company oh, yeah it's just
it's all pictures and but but that's that's that's. Fine
(07:35):
but there are some lovely plants to be.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Sure who is the person that came up with the
term native?
Speaker 2 (07:40):
ARE i have no, Idea BUT i think it's a great,
term don't.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
YOU i think it's. OUTSTANDING i absolutely love. IT i
think it's that's absolutely. Wonderful, hey before we take a
break real, quick you know you were talking about the
new varieties Of fox clubs. Digitalists you know? What you
know WHAT i run into all the. Time IF i
recommend that as somebody that's been gone online and, said oh,
no that's too, toxic you, KNOW i don't want to
put that in my guard because of the. Toxicity you
(08:06):
got a run into.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
That, sure, SURE i, MEAN i, mean when you think about,
it are you know the our wonderful false in the
goal of. Optissies you eat, those you're gonna get. SICK i,
mean there's a ton of plants that are. TOXIC i,
mean you know, enough But fox does. NOT i SUPPOSE
i suppose if you sit down and put a plate
full of fox glove leaves on there and eat. THEM
(08:27):
i suppose you your heart's probably going to palpitate a
little more than it. Should who does? That BUT i
mean it's not talkic to dogs or cats or. Birds
they're smarter than. That SO i don't. Know you, know
there's there's certainly some toxic plants you don't want to
put in the, guard and that's not one of.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Them that's AND i GOT i get that all the.
Time for some, reason people look that up and was,
like oh, NO i can't use that in my. Guard it's, like,
well you're missing out because it's a wonderful. Plant we're
gonna take the quest talk take a quick break talking
with Doctor Alan. Armitage his website Is Alan armity's, dot
and that we come back. Out we're going to take
a look at you can't see. IT i. Can some
of the plants in his garden that are flowering right
(09:03):
now are absolutely. Outstanding we'll talk more about those after
the break here on news radio six'. Ten wtvn he
says garden is not brain surgery or. Rocket science it's
just a bunch of common sense answers and gardening Answers
and he's got them all and THAT'S why i like him.
So Much Doctor allan armitage with us this morning, his
(09:25):
website alan armitages. Dot net of course all the great
books that. He's written and then the herbaceous perennial plants
Is the bible when it comes. To perennials and of
course don't forget is if you Want doctor armitage in your,
back pocket download his. Garden app it's got all the
answers you need. Right there just pull him out of,
your pocket ask him. The answer you got it all
right there on, his app but you can get that
(09:46):
at his website At alan armitage. Dot. Net, Right so
i'm looking at some of the pictures of your garden
and it. Looks great everything's starting to really come, into
flower which. IS amazing i think that's a honeysuckle vine
on that back fence.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
With, the yeah that's ALL oh.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
I am there's no doubt you KNOW what, i SEE what,
i SEE what i look. Through There. SOLOMON seal i love.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
That planet but, You Know solomon seal has so many
DIFFERENT kinds Followm and seal and you know this the
whole story about where it gets, his name it was
it was native to the Whole uh asia minor and
all those Places, in egypt, et cetera where the great,
kings were and, the roote if you take, it up it's.
Real gnarly it's really kind. Of crazy and if you
(10:30):
wash it off and then you dip it, in something
you can make. A seal and apparently it was the
seal that was Used By, king solomon thus became known
as fallom and seal and at the time of. This
plant and there's some are native to, our country some
are Native, to europe some are Native, to ASIA and
i have oosphere four of. THEM here i have one
that really literally a six, feet tall so it's really kind.
(10:52):
Of fun.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Those, Are. GORGEOUS nime i see a Lot of. LITTON
rose i know you, love those but the Variety that
i'm looking at here they. Seem big is that just
because you're actually you're good at.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Growing them well that and it probably put, two, together
okay how. That helps but they, are big and they
are they're very they're very happy where they are because
there's an afternoon. Shade HERE and i put a lot
of compost down because that's a magical, magic potion is,
a compost and they just seem to get better, over
(11:29):
time which is a.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Good, thing now what is what is the what is
the perennial with a, huge leaves, round leaves a single
stem coming up out of, the ground and then the
leaf was on top shining that.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
My bood that was my? Voodoo lily is that the?
VOODOO lily?
Speaker 1 (11:45):
I know the leaves are like fourteen inches. In DIAMETER
if i look, underneath that there's a red flower. Underneath
THERE and i was trying to zoom in to see
what that WAS and.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
I couldn't i'm standing in my garden or even THOUGH
what i took. A, picture sure but as far as
the great, OH oh i know what you're. Talking about
you're talking about the. May? Apple yeah is that what? That?
Is cagular it is an acus in. MAY apple i
thought that's what. That was it's actually what, it is
and it is huge and, underneath it just like a
(12:16):
may apple has, white flowers this has. Red FLOWERS and
i tried to include that in the picture a. Little
bit but, if you, if you, you know just lift
the leaves up a. Little bit i'm looking at them.
RIGHT now. I, cannerplant yeah it's a dissma is a,
botanical name but it's it's a. May apple it just
happens to be a different mayapple than we're used. To, seeing, WELL.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
See i COULDN'T put i thought it kind of looked,
like that BUT then i couldn't put together with the
flower with the. RED color i couldn't put.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
That together and right, BESIDE it I think i sent
you a picture of the same picture of a, yellow flower,
and uh that's that's one of the. Ground orchids it's actually.
An orchid and, You know cincinnati probably could. Do It
Northern Northern, ohio no, but uh the ma a athlete
you probably, could easily but the other one.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Maybe not, all right one one LAST one i saw
it looks like. A sedge. It's, white yeah what is that?
Speaker 2 (13:10):
That is that is? A, Sedge okay and that's uh
moon you you, know, what, loom loon liver. Moon, something
anyway it's. Really good it's, really good and it's been
and and and, for us it kind of gets whacked
around in, the winter but you know it comes back.
Very quickly, so yeah it's. It's. Lovely absolutely we got

glowing it really has been of. Interesting genetics i'm not
sure how it's gonna be in, the marketplace, BUT yeah

Speaker 3 (14:18):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
That's it put for folks that. Don't know they've been
doing some genetics to CROSS the dna from what the
aluminous mushrooms and putting.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
That in and they say they can put this this

alan armitage, dot net so be sure and check. That
out by, the way we're talking about the if you
haven't seen that that firefly petunia, they had you saw
a lot of it in the news, last YEAR and
i think they actually even released some for folks to
(16:33):
buy in a four inch pot and they were like
forty bucks and you can only. Get ONE and i
guess now they finally ramped up the inventory a little
bit MORE because i got to notice the other DAY
that i was eligible to get one to give it.
A try so we'll have to we'll have to say
yes and give it, a shot but it's a it's.
A white the flower on the petunia is white and
(16:56):
it glows. At Nighttime nuts i've seen it already from
somebody else's but it's got to be really, really dark
but it, does glow and it's a it's. A white
it's kind of a greeny glow, to it but it
really does. At nighttime it. Does glow you put it
like you put it in a closet where it's totally.
Pitch black you can see that. Thing glowing it's kind,
of interesting kind, of scary, but interesting and especially if
(17:20):
they're gonna do that to more plants, as well glow into,
Dark plants what do you think? Of that, all right,
quick break we. Come back phone lines are open for
you at eight hundred at SIX' ten wtvn or EIGHT

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Here we go for the past, week or so.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Has anybody been asking you about the pong pong? Fruit?
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Pong, pong? Yes no okay what is? Pong?
Speaker 4 (18:42):
Pong fruit oh you don't know?
Speaker 2 (18:43):
The?
Speaker 4 (18:43):
Pong pong? No, ALL right well i want to get
too INTO it because i want. To spoil anybody but
have you You Don't Watch? THE white lotus. I assume.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
No i have i've BEEN told that i, need TO
be BUT i know. I.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
Have not okay the pong pong fruit was a was
a major plot, point THIS year so i was wondering
if people were asking. You about it.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Somebody got poisoned with the pong pong fruit.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
Maybe mm hmm they call it. The, suicide, Tree yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
No i'm not. Familiar with THAT but now i will
have to. Look it, up all, right the punk the,
pong pong.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Fruit that's it they're going to Display, it IN chicago so.
I don't know maybe it'll make the Rounds in.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
It's is it a mythical or is? It, for real.
No it's, real, oh okay, Yeah all right i'll. Look
it up are You going to chicago to? Check? It,
OUT nah no i can.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Look out a picture of it online and be satisfied.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
And, you're, HAPPY yes okay, i got, it all. Right
thank you not. Pong, Pong fruit NO i've heard i
supposed to should be, watching THAT show though i heard
it was, pretty good anyway talking about yarding and pong pong.
Fruit and all and of course this morning we did
have a frost warning and freeze warning. IN some areas
i think we WERE some as i actually saw twenty five.
(19:56):
Degrees this morning don't forget to keep an eye out
for that as we start going over the next four,
or five weeks as we continue to get into plants
with the new, growth coming out things that are in
flour and of course planting. Those tender, Annuals you know
and again it's not just to remember it's not just
the air temperatures that. We're looking at it's also. The
(20:17):
soil TEMPERATURES and as i Was Talking with mike, ELLIOT
and yesterday i think we're at about fifty two degrees
and hanging right in, the low fifties, so you know stand.
Stand pretty close and as we continue to get it
looks like a what like In seventies on. Monday or,
whatever you know it's going to continue to, warm up
SLOWLY but surely. I like, that but again soil temperatures.
Are so important air temperatures, WILL be, ALSO i get,
(20:41):
i understand that but it's important to watch. Both of
them and again, for you know for free for frost
warnings thirty three, thirty six degrees and you can easily
protect plants for. That freeze, warnings different story and that's
where you're truly trying to protect and save the heat
around the plant so that the heat around the plant
(21:04):
so that, it's you know, it's actually freezing and keep.
It from freezing so you got to keep. That in,
mind hardy, plants you know as far as trees and
shrubs and evergreens and, things like that we're. Good to
go THE only thing i WOULD look to i worry
about in the springtime when we, have temperature fluctuations hostas
sometimes some really tender perennials if they just came out
or you just planted them out. OF a greenhouse i
(21:26):
Worry about. Those, japanese maples obviously new growth takes a
hit when it comes to to, getting REALLY cold so
i worry about. Those for covering but, OTHER than that
i let mother nature kind of do her thing, and
you know go. Go from there, so, you know again.
Watch the temperatures who we're going to? Cruise through here
do you know when the frost? FREE date Is i
(21:47):
bet i've gotten a ton of. Questions this week when
is our? Frost free date? When IS it so i can.
GET out There i know i'm going to be safe
for planting my. Tomatoes and petunias and. All, of that
well remember that frost free dates are based on past
averages of when we have. Stopped having frosts it Used to,
(22:11):
be may, Fifteenth all right and as times have gone
along and we've gotten a little bit warmer, in the
springtime it seems like the frosts don't occur as late as,
they used to and those frost free dates keep backing up,
and backing up and believe, it or not believe. It
(22:31):
or NOT and sometimes i kind of whisper FOR this
because i don't want folks to, jump on, it because
remember soil temperatures are, just as important if not, as
more important. Than the airttempts but frost free date a
thirty percent chance or less of getting a frost after
this date in Our area from Columbus down to cincinnati
is actually the Last, Week of. April april, thirtieth AND
(22:58):
yeah and i kind of keep that quiet, sometimes because
boy for me being in this business, all this, time
you know you've seen frost and it's a little, bit
of snow even, On You, Know mother's, Day May fifteenth
memorial weekend can be pretty nasty sometimes, in the past
so you got to keep, your eyes open watch the
weather and. Check it out but believe, it or not
the true frost free date thirty percent chance or less
(23:21):
is actually at the end, of this month believe. It or,
not so again it's depending on. Where you live google
that sometimes you know frost free date and put in
your city and see what it. Comes up with but
it'll probably Be right about, April the thirtieth, may the third.
Something like that it's amazing how. That has CHANGED but
again i like to throw it out, there and, Say you,
(23:42):
know May fifteenth keep may. Fifteenth in mine you've got.
Plenty of time If you, plant may fifteenth you're still.
Good to. Go trust, me all right to the, gardening
phone lines. We, shall go, Dave Good, morning.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Hi ron how, Are?
Speaker 1 (23:56):
You today, dave, i'm, Great yourself.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
FANTASTIC thank you i didn't like That information on april frost,
now that late. But that's okay my question arbravide. A
green giant i have several of them. In the yard
the deer browsed them really, heavy this winter as well
as the hostas last late fall wintertime they put those down.
(24:22):
To the ground my particular question is on. The arbor
wider they do have some green, left on them even
though they, look like skeletons what are the chances of?
Those bouncing?
Speaker 1 (24:33):
BACK pretty good i think the thing that this is
going to be a time will tell as a, matter
of fact in, MY hands here i have an email
that someone sent me this PAST week that i was
going to bring up about arbor vidy. And deer damage
and these. Were taller ones these are arborvidy that were
about ten to, twelve, feet tall narrow and the deer
(24:54):
just shared them right up about five feet. Off the
ground it's unusual how a unifor it is down this whole.
Hedge they are there's a little bit of brown left
in them from where they, tugged and pulled but there's
some green. In THERE too and I think that i
had them looking at the buds. And the stems. They're
still green the but. Are still green so as long
(25:15):
as those budge are still green back, in the plant
you should see it needle back out again and again
becomes a. Time WILL tell But i would i'm guessing
that at this stage That from, what, i'm seeing uh
they should still needle. Back out now had they taken
those way back into the plant where there's absolutely nothing,
left probably not, but you know if they're just browsing
(25:36):
off the ends and kind of opening up what was on, The,
VERY tips yeah i think you're, gonna come back and
it's going to take a couple of years for, it
to recover. But they will they typically do, recover from
this and the browning is mostly from where they just
grabbed it and. Pulled on, it you know, the hostas
are that's where, they you know they. Eat those. Down
that's okay are the hostes coming up yet or are
you starting to see.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
Any, of the yeah the they're starting. To come back
they're not gonna. Be AN issue and i got some
deer repellent liquid fens from the, big BOX store so
i sprayed some of. THAT last year i didn't have a,
lot Of luck but i'm going to go ahead and
start spraying it now just to try and keep the deer.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Off of them, what you'll see you'll see the deer
brows on the arbor vidy reduced during, the growing season
so they really don't browse on them as much during
from here on through the summer as they will. Fall
and winter, so you know it's not exactly one, of
their favorites but they will go to those as a
last resort as. Far as eating so you know that
(26:37):
the protection becomes, more, important fall winter early spring that
it does during. The growing season and the thing about,
THE liquid fence i. Like liquid fins it's been around
forever and it does. A great job you've got to
reapply that on. A regular basis a one time shot just.
Doesn't cut it and THE other thing i try to
remind folks is that when, they are hungry even though
you got liquid fens on there and that, stuff smells
(26:59):
bad they'll they'll still go through that and, do, Some
browsing UNFORTUNATELY but so i try to. Mix it up i'll,
Use liquid fence i'll, use deer scram which is granular,
around the base and use a combination of the two
and try to freshen up that liquid fence once or
twice through the winter season to try to keep it
(27:20):
as fresh smelling. As you can but still even at
that physical barriers are still the only sure cure to.
Keep them away but browsing from this point forward usually
not as bad as it will be. Fall, and winter.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Yeah it makes sense that deer scram is that a
big box, item as well or Online.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
Or deer scram should be in the local garden centers
or you can go online either way in viral metrics
and viral prenzy something like that, as a company but
just put.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
In.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Deer scram uh and. It's a granular it's a kind
of a meat by product that smells of death to
them and and it really does. A nice job so
the commo with a two should do a pretty nice.
JOB for you I Saw.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
THE green velvet i do some. Business over there they
have a, product as well but it comes in like
a two and a, half GALLON container and i didn't
want to. Buy That much so i'll give this liquid,
fence to try and then, the deer SCRAM see if
i have to mix it up a little bit AND
see if i can keep them off some of my new.
Growth as well deer.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Scram is a granular that you would put around the base. Of,
THE plant okay i fence your spray.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
On, the plant, okay all.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
Right, sounds good, thanks all right good.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Talking with, you quick break We come Back dana YouTube.
Dana and nancy you're coming up next Here in The
Garden with Ron wilson on news radio SIX. To ten wtvn,
by THE way l i told you not to bite
into that. Pong punk fruit.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
I'm still that can't. Take me down nothing, takes out
evil nothing.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
Takes out ala nothing, takes out ala not even. PONG pong, FRUIT.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
I mean i. Wouldn't try disclaim, Don't, try It.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Yeah don't yeah don't DO that FOR i just i
was googling it during the BREAK there and i guess,
It's for real.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
So, no, joke yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
Yeah the Real thing in. Thailand or somewhere it comes
from whatever nice stuff that scares me with people. Like,
You around oh. I'm, just kidding uh let's see what we,
all talking, about yard ing aren't we not the. Pong,
pong fruit uh back to the. Guarding phone lines. We,
shall go, Dana good.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Morning good Morning the firefly partina you, Were, talking about
yeah where can?
Speaker 2 (29:38):
You get?
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Them you can't that's well let me take let. Me
back up they released a few of, them last year
only they put the announcement out to like the growers
in the industry to see if anybody wanted to buy them. To.
Try them uh so it wasn't open, to the public
and they were like forty bucks for a four and a,
half inch pot and a friend of mine. DID get
(29:58):
one i got an anouncement from a media group again
trying to get this out for, people to grow and
it was for people in the industry rather than. To
the public but if you, JUST go ONLINE i mean
i would google it and see if they're. Available out there, but,
they WERE like, like i said thirty nine dollars for
(30:21):
a four and a half inch pot. Small petunia, plants
so anyway they're trying to just get some out there
for people to give. Them a try and That's why
doctor armadach, has A few and i'm going to go
ahead And tell them. I'LL try one i saw a
friend of mine got. One last year the planet itself doesn't.
Look very nice it's kind of a. Dog looking petunia the,
(30:41):
flowers are okay and you had to put it in
a CLOSET and really i mean, talking total darkness but
you could. SEE them, glow i mean it did have a.
Glow TO it but i would google it see if they're.
Out there available but they were hoping to have them
available for growers to use to grow in their own
greenhouses in, twenty Twenty six so i'm not sure if
(31:02):
they'll be at that point by twenty twenty, six or
not but i'd google. It to see you never KNOW.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
When should i plant, My canniballs.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Again cannas like. WARMER soil temperatures i wouldn't be in
any rush whatsoever to get those. In the ground. When
cannas start when you start looking at, sixty degree temperatures
soil temperatures, PRETTY much consistently I could then i'm good
to go as far, As the, cannas but again they don't,
like it cold and they definitely don't like it when
it's cold, and Wet together so i'd hold off just a.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Little, Bit, longer dana okay thank you for your when
you have, A, good.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Day hey you have a great. One as well and
again you know that the dampness goes along when with
this goes along with this cold soil temperature can really cause.
You a, number so again don't be too. Anxious to
go and you know the way, climates have changed our
climate has. Changed the winters and again we had a
nice cold. Winter THIS winter but i have had some
(31:58):
folks that have left cannas and then in a situation
where they were like on the south side, of the
house like between a sidewalk and the house where they,
stayed fairly warm and he reflected off the foundation good
drainage has to be good drainage and have canas.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Come.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
BACK up now i also want to make sure they,
don't Get confused because i've also done cannas even in
containers in, a landscape bed, and you know when they
flower and they set. Seed up top if you're not
dead heading on, a regular basis they will drop seeds
and seeds will come back up. From the ground that happens,
all the time so sometimes they, regrow from seed not
(32:36):
from the actual canna ball or tuber that's. In the
GROUND but again i have seen more and more folks
having some success having, them over winter not taking them
out of the ground in, a really protected, Extra warm
area so. You, never know nancy thanks. For holding on
you're in The Garden. With ron, Wilson.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
THANK you ron i appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
Taking, my call.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
HEY my pleasure.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
I Have, a QUEEN elizabeth and i haven't cut. It,
back yet well now there's all this. Lovely new growth,
it's Just bursting and I'M wondering do i need to
cut it back or HOW far would i? Cut it
(33:24):
back do you have to?
Speaker 1 (33:27):
Cut, it back no you. Don't have to we typically do.
That obviously too if it needs to, be opened up
then that a little bit cut back because we know
that all the new growth and you, know this too
all the new growth is what supports the flowers throughout.
The growing season so all of the above is why.
We do, That timing wise i'm just now getting around
(33:48):
and looking at knockout roses and some of the drift.
Roses in that as far, as cutting back and they're
already putting, out new. Growth that's okay i'm not going
to cut, the NEW growth but i will go ahead
and cut some of the old stems to, cut it
back clean out what needs to. Be CLEANED out so
i will still continue to do that even though it's putting.
Out new GROWTH but, LIKE i say i won't cut.
(34:09):
The new growth i'll cut the old canes, that are there,
cut those back. CLEAN them up i may remove a
little bit of new growth at, the VERY top but
i like to do that because the stays that keeps
them a little. Bit more Compact that's what i'm. Trying
to do so answer, to your question do you have to? Cut,
them back. No you don't you can leave them go
and let it go from where it is and be.
(34:29):
Done with it if there's any browning on the, tips
or tops you might want to. Clip that out, other
than that you could let it grow and just let
it get. Bigger this year that's that's, quite. All Right.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Fabulous so i'm so glad.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
To, hear that yep, you got it so and let
me know if you don't, cut it back let me
know how it. Does for you i'll be. Curious to
see but it's just going to get. Bigger and more
your flowers will be up towards the higher on the
plant rather. Than down low but other than that should be. Good. To, go.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Wonderful okay thank.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
YOU very much i. Appreciate your.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Help you're welcome good. TALKING with you i have had
several people. Ask ABOUT hummingbirds should i get the? Hummingbird,
feeders out yeah they are now cross the river Coming,
up southern ohio so the. SCOUTS are out i would
get those hummingbird feeders up and. READY to go i
think you're gonna start, to see those and it's. Kind
of typical we usually see Them moving through ohio right.
(35:25):
About tax day so basically it looks. Like this year,
They're right online so. There you, go so yeah get
the hummingbird feeders out and get them. Taken care, of
all right that's all we can, Do for today thanks,
