Good morning everybody, Welcome back. I'm Ron Wilson, and you
are in the garden here on news radio six' ten

talking about. Yardening And i'll tell you what you, know
talk about? Yarning how about indoor? Yardening, yeah you, know
if you if you had maybe don't have a, yard
or maybe you don't have a place to put, containers
(00:20):
or maybe you just you, know and when you want
to grow food year, round, right maybe you have too
much snow in the wintertime to grow anything, outdoors or
you don't like to heat your, humidity or you don't
want to deal with the mosquitoes, outdoors you don't want
to go to a community gardener or. Whatever, WELL i
found a book that is absolutely, outstanding the perfect handbook
to teach you how to garden indoors and grow your
(00:42):
own food year. Round so matter of, fact that's what it's,
called how To garden indoors and grow your own food year,
Round The Ultimate guide The Vertical container And Hydroponic. Gardening
And i'll tell you the, author she knows their. Stuff
she has been a Square Foot gardening certified instructor since twenty.
Ten she's a garden, teacher a, writer a, speaker she
dabbles in photography And i'm telling you this book is absolutely.
(01:05):
Outstanding she is with us this. Morning her website IS
SFG fouru dot. Com Kim, Roman, kim good.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Morning good, Morning Ron.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Hey great to have you on the show with us this.
Morning first of, all love the. Book thank you absolutely.
Outstanding AND i KNOW i read up about you a little,
bit AND i know you've been a gardener for a
long time and the gardened all around the world with
as your family has been in the military and traveled,
around so you've been an outdoor gardener. Forever what brought
(01:36):
you to this were your gardening indoors year.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Round, well two different nonprofits THAT i volunteered. For one
of them resettled refugees The afghani soldiers that helped Our
american troops and the other one is for a nonprofit
to call The gardens For. Heroes and we were tasked
to help and assisted living facility specifically for. Veterans and
(02:03):
my mother was a veteran and then she did Have,
alzheimer's SO i knew that those things had to be,
edible because sure is, shooting someone's gonna pop something into their.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Mouth, yep no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
It so you started experimenting with growing things, indoors growing food.
Indoors how long did it take you before you really
felt confident in what you were?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Doing?
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Wow probably probably three to four, years only because you,
know still moving and. Everything but it's really not difficult
to catch. On it's not that it's harder than outdoor.
Growing as a matter of, fact in some ways it's.
Easier it's just.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Different, YEAH i was gonna say which is harder growing
outdoors or? Indoors SO i guess you, KNOW i think
a lot of folks listening here, saying, hey you, KNOW
i like. Houseplants house plants are hot right. NOW i
have a hard time growing houseplants foliage plants, inside let
alone trying to grow something that will produce food THAT
i can. Eat one easier than the other are still
(03:04):
about the.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Same, well put it this. Way i've been successful gardening food,
indoors BUT i cannot keep a house plant alive to
save my.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Life, well there you, Go so that answers it right.
Now they're the name of the book, again is how
To garden indoors And grow Your Own food Year round
By Kim, Roman and it is a great. Book it's
a fun, book AND i have to ADMIT i like
books that are easy to, read and this IS i
love books that have tons of. Pictures this one's got
(03:34):
it and illustrations as, well plus all the great. Information absolutely.
Outstanding so just kind of briefly, here so folks understand
When i'm looking at growing food, indoors especially year, round
what are some of the keys to success? HERE i,
mean CAN i do this in any? HOUSE i mean
some houses have a lot of, windows AM i counting
(03:54):
on the? Sunlight some, don't some are in a. Basement
CAN i do this in just about any?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Location?
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Absolutely as a matter of, Fact i've seen people with
a lot of grow lights growing things in their basement
and some of them were doing it and grow tense
before marijuana was legal in some. States, Right so growing
indoors is not a new. Thing well, NO i.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Mean you know again the marijuana think is a great.
Example folks have been doing that forever and of course
you know the lighting and all of. That And i've
always been one, saying, hey you, know in the winter,
time if you're looking for something to, DO i don't
care where you. Live you get a couple of shop,
LIGHTS i mean as simple as, that with the fluorescent,
tubes hang them up in the basement over a bench
(04:38):
with a couple of trays. Underneath there you can grow
microgreens and the lettuce and that type of solid greens
over the wintertime with no problem.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Whatsoever it's pretty easy to. Do.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
ABSOLUTELY i love, microgreens and you, know if people have
nothing else or a very little, space microgreens is the
way to go because those little powerhouses are about forty
times more nutritious than the adult. Plant in some. Cases
(05:11):
broccoli is one. Thing it's like four to forty times as. Nutritious.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
WOW i like. RADISHES i like cilantro when they're at Micro.
GREENS i like the radishes because they've got that little
bite to, them like the little. Kick talking With Kim
roman this, morning her book is how To Garden indoors
And grow your Own food year.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Round.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
NOW i just talked about using the shop, lights AND
i still do, that the old shop lights with the fluorescent,
tubes and of course today THE led lights and all
the new groll lights that are available out.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
There it's.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Phenomenal i'm as obviously these new lights are a lot
better than using the old shop, lights but it can be.
Done BUT i, MEAN i look at, it it's kind
of confusing how to which one DO i? Use but
you do address this in your.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Book any that says full spectrum is great because it
has every single color that the plant is looking. For
and although to our eye it looks, white every color
is in. There but if you want to give your
tomatoes a, boost you can throw in a little extra red.
(06:17):
Light and then if you're doing a lot of green,
son that would be a blue light or towards the
blue end of the. Spectrum so you can remember that by,
SAYING i want a nice juicy red, Tomato so it's red.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Light, OH i, like, well you know, what and the
red lights AND i just it just kind of bulb
went off in my. Head they also have experimenting with
using like red mulch underneath tomatoes that reflecting of the
Red it seems like it itning helps to increase the
production as. Well so the red light that makes a
lot of. Sense talking with Came roman again how to
(06:52):
garden indoors and grow your own food year. Round so
we obviously lighting is going to be a key factor
as far as growing. Indoors whether you've got sunny windows or,
not you probably are going to still have to.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Supplement, yes, absolutely because when you think about, it especially
in the, wintertime the sun is down so low and
you're not getting very much light in. There and the
rule of thumb when using lights is that you need
the plant needs about twice as many hours as it
(07:27):
would out in the.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Garden thus the reason we keep those on about what
fourteen sixteen hours even in the.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Sunne, absolutely but remember your plants need dark, also so
don't keep them on twenty four.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Hours good. Point good.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Point talking With Kim roman, again the book Is how
To Garden indoors And grow Your Own food year. Around
really cool book to. Read let's take a quick, break
we come back and lots of more questions for her
about gardening indoors and grow my own food behind my
doors and behind the curtains here in the garden With
Ron wilson on News radio six IN. Wtvn, OH i
know that's directed at me BECAUSE i am just, well
(08:06):
never mind talking to your ardner here on news radio six'.
Ten wtvn how the garden indoors and grow your own
food year Ill Of Joe cocker Grow your Food year.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Round song for those plants you're.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Growing, indoors oh the plants would love that One With.
Kim romans she's with us, this MORNING and i HAVE
a i have a confession To. Make KIM when i
was reading about THIS and i was gathering all the
INFORMATION after i got your book, and all and one
of the you COMMENT about uh working to help you
confidently grow your, OWN food i was misreading that. It's
(08:39):
confidentially that's why at the end of going into the
break talking about growing food behind my curtains and behind,
the DOOR and i swear to you until a couple,
DAYS ago, i said, You dummy it, says confidently.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Not, confidentially well it could be confidentially BECAUSE when i
was In The, AIR force i WAS In militi. Harry,
intelligence anyway, so oh there.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
You go Talk With.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Camera roman her WEBSITE is sfg the number FOUR the
letteru dot com AND that's ffg for you Dot com
and by, the way it stands for Square foot gardening
for you let folks know you're involved with Square.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Foot gardening in a, LITTLE bit.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
I am but, FIRST off i got to. CORRECT myself
i talked about full, spectrum LIGHTS but i did NOT specify,
led lights and those are going to not fry. Your
plants some other types of bulbs will fry your plants
because they'll be. Too hot, AND yes i was connected
with a Square foot, Gardening Foundation. MEL bartholomew i actually
(09:42):
learned directly from him how to. Squarefoit garden and he
is the author and creator of, that method which started
in nineteen seventy six when dinosaurs were roaming the EARTH
and i was graduating from. High school but so, he's
yeah so he is the most wonderful person that walked
(10:03):
on the face of. This earth and when he passed
away in, twenty sixteen his heirs and the foundation asked
me to finish the third edition of his all new
Square foot. Gardening, book yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
We just had them on about three weeks ago with the.
Fourth edition talking about the new. EDITION there i met
him way, back when just briefly at a, garden show
and we've had him on our show a, couple TIMES
and i have to the FIRST time i had him on,
THE show i, also went you remember The Book? Lasagna,
GARDENING yes i can't think of the ladies name the author.
(10:37):
Of THAT but i had them both on the same
time at the, same SHOW and, i said you know
what's interesting in. This book these books are written so many,
years ago and look what's Still going look what's? Still hot,
yeah yeah, so yeah you're right back when the dinosaurs were.
Walking around but look what's still out.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
There.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Today, huh absolutely that's, you know sometimes the oldies are,
The goodies there's no doubt.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
About it Talking With kim ROMAN and i talk about
a goodie is THIS book i have in my Hand
called How To garden Indoors and Grow Your own Food.
Year round we've been talking about the lighting. AND things
i think the other thing you address in here and
kind of want your personal opinion here if you. Don't
mind you, talk about, you know growing plants obviously in
containers using. Potting soil i'm, et cetera. Et cetera but
(11:23):
you also talk about hydroponic, gardening indoors which seems to
be coming on. Really strong is one better over the
other or easier than, the other and which do?
Speaker 2 (11:34):
You, Prefer well i'm going to give you. RIGHT now
i prefer soil, based methods the one we usually think
of in. Indoor gardening the, hydroponic method there are, six
types and we think OF that nft nutrient film technique
and that's, the PIPES the pbc pipes that kind of.
(11:56):
Zigzag DOWN and i grew in such a small area
that it had to be in. My office and the
one thing is the pump is going twenty four, to SEVEN,
and i, you know like it was not a nice water.
Feature sound it was just a. Mechanical pump AND also
(12:18):
i found that you have to test the pH all,
the time and if you use the drops to correct,
the pH you have to test it again to make sure.
It's going and then every couple of weeks a, few
weeks you have to tear the whole, thing apart clean the.
Tubes out and also if you're using something, like that
(12:39):
all the plants in that system have to be about
the same, nutrient level and that means you could not
grow tomatoes and lettuce in the. Same system.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
True good so, it's there. It's available it can be
fun if you're. Into IT but i think we. Both
Agree i'm i'm more of, the potting soil and, container
PERSON and i did mess around with the hydroponty gardens
system for a very short period, of time very, short
PERIOD because i actually lost interest in IT and i,
went back, you know, same THING and i just kind, of,
went no that's NOT what i want, to DO and i.
(13:13):
Went back but there are so many great ones out.
There today the arrow gardens, is that and some of
which and, you know actually tell you what you need
to do with some of those with the app. And
stuff you know what fun?
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Is?
Speaker 2 (13:24):
That, right well you know it is if you are
a if you're a person that needs a frustration, free
garden then maybe that is the way you want. To
go but with convenience, comes.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Cost true very.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Much, true well, you know look, at it all this
stuff startup costs to. Do this, you know you can
kind of just gradually work your way, into, IT right
i mean. It does you have to throw thousands of
dollars out there to, get started just kind of gradually
work your, way in buying a few lights here, and
there a, few stands and just kind of experiment more.
And more so as you have, done that and you've
experimented more, and more have you found some, fruit bearing
(14:03):
food bearing plants that you just cannot get a handle on?
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Growing?
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Indoors, well absolutely anything that needs chill hours in order.
To grow you cannot replicate that in your house unless
you want to sit with your windows open in the
middle of. The winter, you know to make sure that
it's below forty degrees to get those chill. Hours, in
so like garlic does not do really well, for, me
(14:31):
cabbage are you like a? Head cabbage anything that takes
a super long amount OF time i find is less
satisfying to Grow because i'm, Just, LIKE okay i want to,
grow this AND then i just want to throw a
tomato in, that thing THAT container i used to have a.
Lettuce in, you know just keep.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Things, MOVING yeah i agree with you one. Hundred, PERCENT
again i you, know what just send. ME what i
keep looking at this the cover of. Your book just
give me GOOSEBUMPS because i want to go. Home now
start putting us some stuff to start. Growing indoors one
last thing that A question i have coming up here
as far as growing these, food indoors the, food indoors.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Is that.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Obviously there comes to the play The old we've been
talking about bees all morning on our, show here and
POLLINATORS don't a.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Lot of these have to be pollinated to.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Produce food only the ones with flowers.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
On them, You, know okay so how's? That happen.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
That happens that happens. Really easily you just TAKE a
q tip or our small artist paintbrush and you go
from flower to flour on the same plant or two
of the same types. Of plants it's not going to
do you any good if you're gonna try to do
a musk melon with. A tomato, but yeah just as
(15:50):
long as you can identify tomatoes and eggplants are, self
pollinating so they've got both male and female parts in.
Every blossom when you're going for something, like cucumbers you
have to be able to identify the male flowers from
the female flowers and just make sure you're going male
and female back.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
And forth so THE old q.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Tip or the artist brush or something, like that and
you become. The pollinator, AND uh i didn't see any
sections in hear, about THIS but, i mean do you
have any wines or background music that you suggested while you're?
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Doing that, you, know hey very white is pretty.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Darn good, oh, yeah, yeah berries that's.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Pretty good i'm gonna write that. Down here you're.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
You're correct berries as a. Good influence Talking With. Kim
roman her Book is How To garden Indoors and Grow
Your own Food. Year round one of my favorite things,
in HERE and i absolutely.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Love this, and uh.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
We're building a propagation wall on our in, our House
but I'm gonna i'm gonna do the same thing here
is the vertical wall gardens and then using growing those
plants on that wall as a part of the indoor
or your. Interior DECORATIONS and i. See that, you know
the propagator thing was cool with the two test tubes
and the roots and, all that but also growing greens
(17:05):
and things that you would use in. Your salad and then,
you know as you're, having salad you could just kind
of turn around and grab a little extra let us
or a little something off the wall and throw it down. Your.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
PLATE there i could see that being a lot of
fun when you have some.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Folks, over absolutely you do have to make sure that
there is that the plants do get. Enough light what
you can do is you can google low light plants
and it's going to pop up with a lot of
greens and a lot of. The herbs so those are
THE ones i suggest for something. Like that the herbs
and greens are especially, hardy anyway so they're almost set
(17:41):
it and. Forget it, but yeah you might have to
supplement lights.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
On mouths one last thing and we'll let you.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Go here, you know when we're growing vegetables in the vegetable,
garden outside, we always, not always but a lot of
times get involved with a little insect issue or a
little leaf, disease issue things. Like that do you find
that happening indoors?
Speaker 3 (17:59):
As?
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Well, absolutely so if you're moving plants from, outdoors indoors
you're going to want to spray them with some water
so aphids don't. Come in the Biggest problem i've had
is with. Fungus nets SO when i bring, ANYTHING indoors
i immediately put the yellow sticky traps in each pot
and those will collect. The Adults then i'll start watering WITH,
(18:21):
bt i specifically THE the I, bt i and you
water your plants with those every single time close to the,
soil level and those will stop the eggs from. Coming
up so really it's preventive measures are. The best.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Got it Talking With kim, roman again the book. Is
outstanding it's called How To garden Indoors and grow your
own food Year round confidently, not confidential, not confidentially but
it's it's a, great book it. REALLY is i highly
suggested you'll learn a lot. From it whether you're an indoor,
outdoor gardener but you will love THIS and i guarantee
when you're done, reading it you will be growing more
(19:01):
of your own food in your own house a. Year
round whether it's behind the closed doors or, open doors
that's totally up. To You, kim roman really appreciate your time.
This morning again HER website sfg for you, DOT com
Sfg for you, dot com the book How To guarden
Indoors and grow your own food. Year round thank you.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
So much.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Thank you, all right good talking With You kim, roman
again How to garden indoors and grow your own food.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Year round love.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
The book lots of great pictures in, there too and
you can learn how to, grow confidently not. In confidentiality,
all right, quick break we. Come back phone lines are
open for you at a two TO one wtvn eight
hundred six TO ten wtvn here on news radio SIX.',
ten wtvn.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Ah we're just having.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
A great morning here talking about bees and talking about
insect frast and talking. About gardening indoors and growing your own. Food,
year round yeah, you, know what again the, green as,
simple not simple but they're easier. TO do inside i
think easier. Than house plants root crops are pretty easy
(20:07):
to do. Inside as well lights and then you'll read.
Through this book light is, the key obviously because they
have to have sunlight. To do this and remember what,
she said there and sometimes we forget about that when
we're turning those supplementing the light with those with. The grow,
lights you know you've got to keep it within a
certain distance from, the fold age and you keep those
lights on about fourteen maybe. Sixteen hours max but you
(20:31):
put them on a timer so they. Do shut off
you still want that thing still wants plants still want
to go through, a dark period, night time period, so
you know you shut it off and bring it back
on in, the morning again so you have to put
them on a timer. To do that, but, you Know
again it's i'm looking at this book and the, COVER
and all i don't do a lot of, indoor food
(20:52):
gardening growing, my own food but it makes me want to,
get more involved to get back into doing more experimenting
with it because it just looks like a lot of
fun and you know what the benefit of, doing all
that you get to eat it to the. Gardening phone lines. We,
shall go, barbie good.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Morning good morning how? Are you good How.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Are you, I'm doing. GREAT thank you i actually have
a question.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
On the lawn i'm getting ready to have my lawn, spring,
air RATED okay and i was wondering IF there's anything
i should put on that. After Or.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
BEFORE m no i think you know the thing about
spring aeration is that. Moisture's the key they have to
wait till it's not too wet or. Not, too dry
uh they're going to do the one where they pull,
the plugs out. The, cores, out, yes okay yeah So
they're gonna the big thing for them right now is
making sure the moisture levels are right so. It, works
properly now after you're, done doing that do you do
(21:53):
you need to do anything as, far as, uh spring
feeding pre, emerged and herbicide any, kind of seating. Any,
like that yeah are you going to do?
Speaker 3 (22:04):
ALL of those.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
I am okay to do them all, afterwards is great
and especially the, pre emergent herbaside because once the if
you put the pre emergent down now and then it
gets watered in and it, creates that barrier and then
you come back with a, core air rator you. Break
the barrier so you want to get, it down first
the pre emergent or the, core aer rating and then
(22:28):
come back and put the. Pre emergion down but do
remember if you're planning on doing the, pre emergent herbaside
you cannot seed with that at, The same time so
you're going to have to decide what you want to
do unless You use the scott's step one for. Newly
seated lawns it's a, little more expensive but it does
allow about fifty days for grass seed. To come up
(22:49):
you can, do that one but those would all be
done after your, core air rating so you. Do that
first what would be nice is if you could get
that company that does that to come in and just
put on a re you, light top, dressing a compost a,
really fine compost and kind of. Rake that in man
that your lawn would love you. For that one but,
if you don't at least the core aerating is. A
(23:10):
real plus but then after that you can come. Back
in fertilizing spring, fertilizing no problem spring. Seeding no problem
the pre emerging overside would be a problem unless you
use to Step one from scott's for newly seated lawns
that has a.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Fertilizer. In, it also.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Okay. That, sounds good okay thank.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
You very, much all right good. Talking to you, Appreciate
the call thanks for listening. To the, show and again
that can be very confusing looking at have you been watching?
The soil temperatures looking at the soil, temperatures this morning
for in Generally in, the columbus area soil temperatures this
morning fifty three degrees kind. OF surprised me i didn't think.
IT'D be quiet i know it's been warm this last,
(23:53):
a few days didn't think it'd be. Quite that much
but it has been as high as fifty six degrees
over the, last two day and the average for the week. About,
fifty degrees remember we're looking at fifty five degrees consistently
for crabgrass and other weed seeds to. Start to germinate
we want to make sure we have the pre emergence
in place. Before that happens if you look ahead the
(24:16):
next five, days or, so temperature wise nighttime temperatures are
continuing to. Be very low as a, MATTER of fact
i think we've got a couple of them coming up
here that are going to be in the thirties and.
The low forties what that will do is keep those,
Soil temperatures down so. KEEP watching it i think we're
in good shape for at least another week be be
able to stretch it out. The following week we'll just
have to watch the weather and watch. The soil tempts
(24:38):
and if you don't know how to do, the soil
temperatures you can need to buy as soil thermometer at
your local independent garden center or go to greencast. Online
dot com green cast, online dot com, click soil temperatures put.
In your town you Can put in columbus if you
want to put in the hill you're with something specific
(25:00):
and it'll bring up your soil temperatures for today currently
for the twenty four hour average and the last five
day average to give you a feel for.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Where we're going and we.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
Are looking at those temperatures getting to a point now
where if you're looking to plant those, cool seasoned, CROPS
you know i CONTINUE to say i look at that
forty five degree soil temperature as a benchmark for planting
cool season crops that like. THE cooler temperatures i also
look ahead over the next week or so to see
what kind of weather.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
We're gonna have we're gonna have a.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Lot of rainfall are we gonna have, dropping temperatures again
because although those plants enjoy the cooler temperatures and we'll tolerate,
the cooler soils they typically do not like, cooler wet
soils especially in, the root.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Crops especially potatoes so you.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
Kind of have to watch. That as well, but you
know looking at that fifty three, fifty six fifty.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
We are.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
NOT we're there, i would, say you, know next week
looking at and you may have some of you may
have already started some of those early. Cool season crops
we are right there on that line to get started planting. Some,
of those. Yes most, definitely all right take, a quick break, We,

Speaker 1 (26:27):
WTVN i had i know it has nothing to. DO
with gardening i had the Fortune Of seeing Tom Patty.
And Joe Walsh when tom patty was doing? His final
tour was that? Two years ago it right?
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Before? He died uh not, two years ago, three years ago?
Four years ago how long? Ago was it WAS? IT
before covid i believe. He passed away it was on
my BIRTHDAY or like i think it. Was twenty seventeen
that wasn't? That long ago it was. That long ago we're.
CLOSE to, It i. Mean i'm loud he was.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Like.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
Just yesterday anyway got to see, him in concert the two.
Of them together it was probably The best concerts. I've
Ever Attended and joe. Walsh was great he put on,
a great show and of course the two, of them
together And Of course tom. Petty Did too, but october second, Twenty,
seventeen seventeen wow?
Speaker 3 (27:19):
There you are when? Is it again? October twenty Second he,
died October. SECOND twenty october i got to Write that, down,
October second, Bird oh well. I'm the third it was,
the day before oh the? Third birthday card. For got.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
It that's it that's a pretty subtle way of. Bringing
that up I'M glad that i liked how you Work that.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
In over, seven years now doesn't.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
Seem like it, two years ago. THREE years ago. I
don't know i'm. An old MAN what? Can I say
BUT i'm glad. I did it was one of THOSE
things where i didn't almost, didn't Do it AND i'm.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Glad i did so.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
There you go we were talking about, the bees earlier,
and of course all we, have to do all we
can do is what we, NEED to, do i think
to try to promote uh being friendly. IN. Our gardens uh,
IF you recall i had a Young Lady on justina
block who went through a lot of research and put
together that WILDFLOWER seed mix uh specific SPECIFICALLY for pollinators,
(28:17):
uh and bees and It's Called The BOTANICAL. Bee blend uh,
this past week, FOR some reason i had a lot
of folks asking what was that wildflower seed mix you?
Were talking about not a couple, of years ago but about?
Two months ago maybe do you remember? When?
Speaker 3 (28:31):
That was ella was it? Twelve weeks ago maybe maybe? Eleven?
Weeks ago no. NINE weeks ago i don't know what you're,
Talking about now i'm.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Just harassing, you but Anyway IT'S the. Osmia b company it's.
OSMIAB dot com i believe it's their website and you
can go there. And order it but it's probably one
of the BEST seed mixes i have ever seen when
it comes, to for pollinators uh and obviously bees in that.
Category as well and if you look through the list
(29:02):
of the seeds that they, have in there both the,
annual and, perennial you know if you want to plant
by plants rather, than buy seed it's a great list.
To work from but it's. Osmea b COMPANY os m
i a. B ee company that is the that is
the blend you want to take. A look at does
a great job and then we're going to have them
on our show here in a. Couple OF weeks but
(29:24):
i found a product. That's really COOL you remember i
had the. B cups on we can put the little
flowers that are made for bee cups and you put
follow up with water and the bees can sit. On
the side they're attracted to them because of the reflection
and drink out of those. Little, bee cups well a
lot of folks have like bird bass or ponds or
fountains up around, the patio area and you always see
(29:45):
bees that fell in trying to get something to drink
and drown. And It happens and i've had, FOLKS to
say i got this huge fish pond beekeeper that lists
about four houses down and when it, gets really dry
the bees come down and they try to get water and.
Speaker 3 (29:59):
THEY fall in.
Speaker 1 (29:59):
I FEEL bad anything, i can do and hopefully the
bee keeper can try to help supply more. Water as
well but found this. Really cool Product who has it's
been invented by a put together by a bee keeper
for that reason to protect his. Bees from drowning and
it's called. A bee pontoon it looks. Like a frisbee
(30:23):
it's got squares and the little openings grid working the.
Top of it it floats and tolerates that quite a
bit of weight without. Flipping over anyway it's called. A
bee pontoon and you put it, in your fountain you
put it in your bird, bath or whatever and the
bees and pollinators can, land on it drink and fly.
(30:44):
Away without DROWNING so after i GET a couple i
ordered a couple of samples to take a. Look at
it i'll let you know more ABOUT it after, i
get it but if you want to look, at it
yourself it's called. A bee pontoon what A great Idea,
I told, barbie i SAID why did i think of?
Speaker 3 (30:59):
Something? Like that uh back to the arting phone line, As,
we go joe thanks. For, Holding, On.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Yeah hi, Ron my question i've got a grub problem
in my backyard and.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
WHAT how do i GET how do i get? Rid
of them and is it okay to PUT down extra
i just want to MAKE sure that i get every
last one of them.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
If that's.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
Possible it's not i'll tell you. THAT Right now i
my comment always about, Grubs is this you'll never be
one grub free, in any lawn whether it be in
the landscape, and the turf whatever. It, may be uh
there will always be some there that you'll never. Get
them all and did you? Have turf damage is that
how you you know that?
Speaker 3 (31:41):
You have? Them or what how? DO you know i?
KNOW because skunks i have a lot of Those TONE
shaped can i see them?
Speaker 1 (31:51):
In, my backyard yep it's all, over the. Place got
it so they're trying to help you out by digging
them up here and. Here's the deed but. But you
don't but you don't see any turf damage. From the grubs,
just for.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Discussion, the damage.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
PERFECT that's what i, need, to know so so we
know they're high enough levels that we're having some turf
damages because a lot of times that the if the
populations are ten or twelve, per square foot you're a
good healthy turf can make it without any damage at
all at all with that. Many grubs there but of
course if the squirrels or the skunks and the raccoons
find them a different story than they start digging and.
(32:27):
Looking for them so the best time to treat for
them two times one Is Either in june July and
early august with a grub, prevnter all right which kills
the eggs before they. Ever hatch out so there's all
different types of beetles that are gonna mate lay those
eggs in your turf That, Do that June, july and
august depending on the. Type of beetle the grub preventers
(32:50):
will stop those. Eggs from growing you stop them before they,
even you know are able to do. Any damage whatsoever
that is a great way to get. Them, under control
secondly if you find them in the fall where you
got a lot of damage and they're still at the surface,
of the ground using, a grub killer which is a
different product than the grub preventter and watering in it
(33:13):
really well does a nice job. At, that point now
it won't stop the skunks and the raccoons at that
point because it takes about two weeks to, kill the
grubs so they continue to dig and. Cost some issues
we have found, that mill organite as an all natural,
fertilizer that smell has a tendency to repel raccoons and
(33:36):
skunks from digging, in the lawn so it's something you
might want to try if they get really bad as
far as digging. Up, your turf thirdly the, next best
time and it's not really, the best time but it,
can be done is. In the springtime but the, problem
is this, in the springtime those grubs and, over the
winter went down deep into the. Ground, to overwinter now
(33:58):
as the temperature, start to warm they move back to
the soil surface And, sometime in may Typically somewhere Around,
may versus june they emerge as an adult and start
the process. All over again but when they come, to
the surface you're not really sure, one hundred percent so
You wait until april ish soil, temperatures warming up you
(34:22):
put down, the grub killer, not the preventter watered, in
really well and you will, get some kill but not
not like you would if you did it when they
were still at the surface in. The late summer so
the spring application is, not highly recommended but could be
done if. You wanted to and again it's a matter
(34:45):
of probably wait until about Second, week of april Third,
week of april, putting it down watering it in really
well so it gets down into the soil and you'll.
Get some control but the grub preventter and again two
different products that you would Put, Down anytime june July.
OR early august i usually wait till about Mid to
late june and put it down is. Your best shot
(35:07):
but you're always no matter, What, you do joe you're
always gonna have grub two or three here and there
in that launer.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
In the landscape they'll. Always, BE there.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Okay I, appreciate that, RON all.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Right i know it was a lot, of info there
but just kind of walk. You through, it but again
that's if you've had that. Problem out there remember grub Killer.
And grub preventter there are. Two different products grub killer goes.
Right after him, the, grub killer, obviously you know goes.
Right after Him the grub preventer is about a ninety day.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
Action. ON that heskell i ran. OUT of time i can't.
Take your.
Speaker 1 (35:42):

pollinators they really. Need Your Help Is saint, patty's day
