well what about running for the roses at The Columbus
park Of. Roses where do we stand right? Now when

(00:22):
are the roses starting to flower? Yet well let's find
out from our good friend And Teresa parker's, Cousin Nancy.
Walsh good, Morning, well.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Good, Morning. Ron how are you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
TODAY i am.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Doing, Great thank. You it's a rainy, day but, hey
there's other things that you can be doing out, there you,
know to take advantage of rainy. Days you know WHAT
i always, say.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
For, SURE i want to make it real, Clear i'm
not a naked. Gardener, Okay, Well.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
I'm glad You're i'm glad you made that, Clear.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Especially in The Parker. Roses that could be a real
sticky situation.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
THERE i was gonna, SAY i don't think you'd want
to do that in The park Of.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Roses, no you'd also probably end up in jail since
it's a city.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Park, yeah probably SO i love.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It you, know the roses are we always used to
say Mid june was peak bloom of the. Roses you,
know end Of may was when the heritage roses would start. Blooming,
well this warm weather and this abundant, RAIN i Would
we're guessing probably the last week Of, may we're going

(01:24):
to have a lot of roses in bloom a. Lot
one thing now that the. Trees it's a we're certified
arboretum at The park Of, roses, right and the magnoias
were were, beautiful but that two day frost kind of zapped.
Everything but the dog woods are coming. On and on our,

(01:47):
website which Is parkerrooses dot, org there are self guided
tour tree, tours so you can just go on that
and you can be guided through the garden with all
the trees that are in. THERE i mean there's a
whole lot of. Trees they are all identified and even
though it's, raining take an umbrella and you, know just

(02:08):
stroll through the. Garden the lawn is, Beautiful all the
perennials are coming, up the even the annuals are coming
or said a lot of them have been. Planted roses
are coming up and, budding and it's a beautiful place
even though we're not in full bloom for the.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Roses, sure and that's you, know The park Of roses
is a park that you want to visit on a regular.
Basis as a matter of, fact if you went once a,
month you would see something. Different obviously every.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Month oh, ABSOLUTELY i mean it goes from you, know, spring, summer, fall.
Winter there are always there's always something in. Bloom even
in the. Winter there's, trees, cultivars conifers. Blooming and we
have a conifer tour as, well self guided, tour dog wood,
tour LIKE i, said Red bud, tour and it's they're

(02:58):
all photos and stuff on the way we, site so
every there's always something there to be, seen you. Know
it's it's just a great place to.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Walk talking With Nancy wallsh of course from The Columbus
park Of roses their Website parkoroses dot. Org so be
sure and check that. OUT i have to, ask you,
know after we came through this past, winter we have
some pretty cold temperatures there for a, while and you
guys don't do a whole lot as far as protecting
your roses for the most. Part how did they come?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Through they came through very. Well we don't cut them
back like we used. To some we, do but not
severely like we used. To we wait until, Spring we
wait until we think we've passed that point of. Freeze.
Right but, yeah it's you know, what very very little
damage this, year and so we're expecting a great. Year

(03:49):
how we know it's a great going to be a
great year even from last. Year our rose order for
new roses this spring is very. Small we don't have
to replace very many roses at. All so that's how
we know what kind of past year it's.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Been, now do you as far as rose care during the,
season do you have somebody that actually goes through and
dead heads the, roses feeds the roses on a record,
basis so inspects for insect or leaf. DISEASE i, mean
somebody do? That volunteers throughout the.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Season, well there is a garden supervisor there and she
hasn't made and they are pretty much the experts on.
Them but we have a crew one hundred volunteers who help,
weed cut back. Malch they do a variety of. Things
we love our volunteers anyone who would like to be

(04:38):
a volunteer putting out the word give me a call
six four or, five, three three nine. One we would
love to have you join. Us the information is also
on our website for. Volunteering it's a wonderful. Group they
have a lot of fun and we have ones that
have been there for years because they do enjoy it so.

(04:58):
Much but, yeah it's a it's a very large. Crew
they are all very. Knowledgeable but you don't have to
be you just if you just like being outside in
working with. Dirt we love. You we would love to
have you join, us and we will teach you along the.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
WAY i was going to, say you get to learn
along the, way you get to enjoy The Columbus parker,
roses and the biggest benefit of the whole thing is
getting to work with.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
You you are always so. Kind i'm being.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
HONEST i, mean you, know Besides, TERESA i don't know
who else you'd want to work.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
With, Well i've got about fifty other cousins you can work. With,
HEY i have a. QUESTION i have a question for
you for. Myself, sure this YEAR i have bought four
and this was the garden. SUPERVISOR i subjected these bloome orang. Lilacs,
yes they bloom three times summer or, spring summer and.

(05:58):
Fall what do you know about?

Speaker 1 (06:01):
THOSE i think the thing about bloomerang is to remember
that there's a period of, time and this is where
folks get a little. Frustrated you'll get the bulk of
your flowering in the, spring so you'll see that's when
you're going to see the biggest show of color is
in the. Springtime and if you have to do any
pruning to, it do that right after they're finished, flowering

(06:22):
just like you would any other. Lilac it's important to,
fly you, know to prune your lilacs within a couple
three weeks after. Flowering if you wait longer than, that
sometimes you start to remove some of the buds for next.
Year so you get on it and do whatever minimal
pruning is. Necessary and then what that bloomerang has to
do is that now it, regroups now starts to, regrow
and once that new growth starts to harden, off then

(06:44):
you start to get a little bit of color toward
mid to latter part of the, summer and then a
little bit more as we get into the fall. Season
so that summer and fall blooming period kind of go
together a little bit later, on but there's a pretty
good gap there where you're not going to see any
color and don't give up or be. Disappointed that's just

(07:04):
the plant has to grow so that you've got those flowers,
on you, know on that new, growth so you just
kind of sit back and. Wait it'll be a nice looking,
plant but it's a little bit more into the, SUMMER
i think than most people will, anticipate and then they
kind of come on and again the show is very
at that point, sporadic and it's enough that you see
it and then you smell, it but it's not at

(07:27):
all like it is in the, spring but you still
get that repeat, blooming which is so cool about the.
Bloomerangs so after.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Each blooming season the three, seasons you prune. It after
each of those three, seasons well you prune.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
It for sure in the spring like you would normally
any any. Lilac the ones in the in the fall
would be basically just dead, heading so you would remove those,
old those old flowers off of that because you're not
going to get any more new growth at that. Stage
so we're not looking to remove anything besides the old flower.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Head, okay, OKAY i will take photos and send them your, way.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
So then you have to report back and see how
CLOSE i.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Was, YES i.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Will, well, hey you know.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
What we always appreciate the. Updates and by the, way
the roses are all labeled individually as, well, right so
once they start the flower we'll be able to see
what the different varieties.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Are, yes they're all. Identified and also there is a
rose list on our website listing every single rose in the.
Garden so. Yes and the.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Absolute final, question how does hardy party looking? Party party is?

Speaker 4 (08:33):
Dan?

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yes and the funny that the rose beach beside it
planeted behind beside it is called pink. Cocktail well that makes.
Sense so they are very happy.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Together the wonder you got them right right with each,
Other Nancy, walsh are always a. Pleasure appreciate you always checking
in with. Us, again check out their Website parkerrooses dot.
Org even more, importantly if you've never been there, before
check out The Columbus Parker. Roses you will love it
and go on a rainy. DAY i like walking through
parks on a in the gardens on a rainy. Day

(09:05):

Speaker 3 (10:33):
Chores getting my day.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Started there you.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Go mexican. Sunflowers been waiting all winter to ask you about.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Him heard you guys talking about him last spring.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
Summer where CAN i get? Them everybody got?

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Him or?

Speaker 4 (10:48):
WHAT i ain't got to go To, mexico DO i?

Speaker 1 (10:50):
Know, No i'll tell you what twofold. HERE i hope
more people are growing. THEM i haven't seen everybody's annual list,
yet SO i can't tell you for, sure BUT i
think you're gonna find it in most of the garden.
Centers the thing you want A mexican. Sunflower and so
you don't get, confused that's a common, name BUT i
want you to write this. Down it's called, tithonia and

(11:11):
it's T I T i t H o N I a.
Tithonia and you want the orange. One there's an orange
one and a yellow one that they're both, okay but
the orange one's the.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Best and, Yeah i've seen the orange do them my.
Machine it looks.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
Fascinating, it's you, know the planet itself when you look at,
it is nothing to you, know it's nothing to brag.
About it's just a big old annual and. Instincts you
can get three or four feet tall with no, problem
and the leaves are. Okay but when that starts the
flower with that orange. Flower it is so. Fluorescent no
matter where it's, planted in your containers or in the

(11:51):
garden or, whatever your eye stops there because it's such
a bright. Orange and what also stops there are the.
Butterflies they absolutely love, it and so do the. Pollinators
and that's What i'm looking.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
For, butterflies, pollinators humming, birds you get.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
It they all they all love, it and they're all on.
It and the only thing you have to do to,
it keep it, watered feed it every now and then dead.
Headed once those flowers are, fetished to go back in
there and clip that that old flower stem out of,
there keep dead head to keep you, know introducing new,
flowers but otherwise pretty much care. Free if you didn't

(12:27):
do anything to it at, all it's still flower for.
You but it's absolutely. Wonderful we're seeing it more and
more in all the garden centers because more people are
asking for. It but if you find, out you go
through the next couple of weeks and nobody's got, it
AND i can't believe nobody's going to have. It you
can grow that from. Seed the seeds are, available you.

(12:48):
Know you can go online and find the tithoni of
seeds and starting. Yourself it's not too late to do.
That should you want to give that a shot as?
Well but, yeah when you ask for do The mexican.
Sunflower but then, say you know tithonia and that talking
about and you want the orange? Winner what about?

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Foundation LIKE i got terrible soil around, HERE i mean?

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Terrible is? It can you do? It it?

Speaker 1 (13:15):
IS i do. IT i do it in the, ground
AND i do it in raise, bed SO i do
it in all three. Locations and they're. Great once they
get rooted. In it's hard to pull them out of the.
GROUND i, mean they're just it's just a tough.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Plant, outstanding been waiting all. Winter ask you. That thank, you.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
Buddy i'm gonna be on the hunt for, him.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
All right IF i IF i see it when we're
out and, About i'll make SURE i report.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
It all, Right, LISTENING i got you in the background every.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Weekend do the mature getting ready for the on.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Target see there you, Go, RICK i appreciate the, call
appreciate you listening to the. Show thanks for your.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
Knowledge, sure all, right my.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Pleasure good talking with you And Lynn.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Lynn good, Morning good, Morning.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Ron i'm gonna plague with the album Of Little. ANTS
i have a bed of chickens and hens in a
flower bed that runs along the back of my, house
and ANYTIME i pull up some of these chickens and
hen it is just swarming with, ants and unfortunately they're
starting to crawl up to the windows and getting into the.

(14:20):
Kitchen any suggestions on how to get rid of, that.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
WELL i think that they remembered about ants is that
especially where there are the seedum's growing the hands and,
chicks you, know it's usually a little bit drier and
a little bit sandy or. Soil so they like. That
that's a great sot for to be. In and obviously
they're in search of food and that's why they start to.
Search come to the, house come, inside try to find
something to drink and something to. Eat that's the bottom.

(14:46):
Line and so obviously trying to seal the house off
cracks and. Crevices the ant baits are still probably one
of the best things to. Do and you can create
somewhat of a perimeter barrier around the found of the
home using you, know the granular insecticides that are available out.

(15:06):
There they're labor labeled for ant. Control by just creating
a small barrier around the foundation of the. Home right
now is when they're really, active and you're going to
see ant oars on the, sidewalks and you're gonna see
carpenter ants everywhere because they're just they're you, know they're,
nesting they're doing their. Thing so they're pretty high in
populations right. Now so you, know, again the ant bits

(15:26):
are usually your best, bet especially inside the. House the
perimeter around the foundation will typically does a pretty good
job creating a barrier there to keep them from going
inside around the seed of itself and the hens and
chicks in. THAT i you, KNOW i DON'T i usually
don't treat the soil for ants unless it's SOMETIMES i

(15:47):
get them in a container AND i just spread out the,
soil make them go everywhere and put it back in the.
POT i try not to use the insecticides IF i
can get by without using, it you, know if you
can so the perimeter, treatment the ant, base that type of,
thing that's that's WHAT i would work.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
For and we're the best place to pick up some
of that perimeter treatments, well sprinkle around the perimeter of.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
That if you go to your local garden, centers they'll
have bonn eyes ant and you know ant control Usually
spectra side as. One you, know there's several companies of,
that but the local garden centers are have it for,
you and that's something you probably would also find. It
Like zettler, hardware they're gonna if you have A zettler
close to, you they probably have. That they'll show you
on hand as. Well it's. Granular just sprinkle it, around

(16:31):
water it in and they'll it takes advantage of the
rain and it'll break down for you and you're usually
pretty much good to.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
Go and is that that's not harmful to?

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Dogs is That i've got to meet? Dogs read? It read,
it read the, label because what they'll tell you is
put it, down water it, in maybe keep the dogs
away for the day or whatever it may, be and
then you're should be good to go after.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
That thank you so. MUCH i appreciate all your. HEALTH
i love your.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Show thank. You appreciate the, Listening appreciate the.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Call, okay take.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Care you know what's interesting About rick calling about To.
Tithonia in the top right hand side of my one
page of NOTES i bring every, WEEK i wrote down
some plants, that you, know as we start to look
at the annuals and planting out there THAT i really.
Liked it are tough and, durable AND i like to
push stuff that you, know you plant, it you don't
have to worry so much about. It That i've always
been impressed. With and in the, tomatoes, obviously the big

(17:25):
dwarf tomato maybe hard to. FIND i don't, know BUT
i think we got a real winner. There French breakfast.
Radishes if you grow, radishes Try french. Breakfast if you
can find the seeds. Burple they all have. It nothing,
New but when you Plant french breakfast radishes and you
can grow them in, containers harvest them when they're about
the size of your little, finger and you can eat

(17:47):
foliage in all and they are the, sweetest creamiest rattish
flavor you could ever. Imagine but it's Called french. Breakfast
but you, know you can let them mature and they
get more of the little bit of the bite to
it from the. Radish but you pick them at that
little finger size And i'm telling you, what you could
eat dozens of them, There so darn, GOOD i put

(18:09):
that on my, list you, know tomato, wise you, know
we still talk About kellogg's breakfast And amana orange being
such a, sweet high, intense flavorful tomato still at the
top of the list as far As i'm. Concerned but
when at some point comes to, me it, says you,
know what's just a, good consistent medium sized, tomato good
flavor PRODUCES a lot usually comes too. Fairly, well what

(18:33):
do you? Recommend AND i STILL i tell you can
go back to some of the old, fantastics, SuperSonics. Celebrity
there's a bunch of them that still come, out that
are still out, there that are tried and TRUS i
still Think fourth Of july tomato is one of the
most consistent medium sized tomatoes that's out. There they come in,

(18:57):
clusters it's a great. Flavor it's a fifty four day,
producer thus the name fourth Of july because it'll. Produce
if you get a planet, early it'll produce by the
fourth Of, july and then it's just a fireworks of
medium sized tomatoes after. That BUT i love that tomato
and have always had great success with. It and of
Course ramapo AND i think Again ramapo Is Darby, creek

(19:20):
and you know, THEY i think they're still the only
ones around to grow. It great, tomato great and containers as,
Well SO i love. THOSE i did want to mention.
Those and then for, annuals right at the top of
the list Is, tithonia That mexican. Sunflower i'm telling you
it's you know, again the planet itself is like, okay

(19:41):
but the flowers are spectacular and the, pollinators including the,
hummingbirds absolutely love. It that orange is. Phenomenal if you Like,
colius that leaf color of. Colias colius is one of
my favorite annuals of all. Annuals but you've got a
really sunny hot spot and the colis just aren't working
well for. You. There look At. Perilla parilla and The

(20:03):
perilla varieties that are out there today give you that colius.
Look but they are tough and durable and take the
sun and the heat and containers and all absolutely. Phenomenal
so look At parilla as a sun substitute For colius
if you can't get the colies to do well in the.
Sun and two, more three. More one Is. Angelonia it

(20:25):
looks like a snapdragon more, Upright And i'm telling You angelonia, tough,
durable great, color takes the. Heat great. ANNUAL i have
all new respects for, cannas cannas in, containers tough and,
durable tropical look the flower on, top so many different,
foliages it's. Crazy keep that in. Mind kalladiums for the.

(20:49):
Shade love. Kaladiums love, koaladiums and you talk about brightening
up your shade, garden kalladiums will do it for. You
there's just a. Few i'll keep mentioning a few AS
i think about them every, week but those are. Something
those were on my list for today to take a
look at. It if you're at the garden centers and
you should be going out there this, weekend and take
advantage of these rainy days because they're not going to
be quite as busy as it's going to be next.

(21:11):
Week so don't fight the. Traffic go do it today or.
Tomorrow another, break we come, back we'll continue talking about
yarding a two to ONE wtvn here on News radio six'.
TEN wtvn i do want to put a shout out
to all the folks Out At. Columbus trees they hosted
our show out There. Last saturday really, cool place really.

(21:33):
COOL house i kept Getting on andrew about, his house
but great. Family too but stop Out if i've been
out in that area for quite. Some time it's amazing how,
it's developed all the homes that are building. Out there
but to go see them Out, In Sunbury, columbus trees
go to Their website columbustrees dot com to learn more.
About them but we do thank you. For that that

(21:54):
was one of those SITUATIONS where i didn't KNOW if
i was going to make it there. IN time i
have to drive from our Studios On west fifth, out
THERE and i can't leave till the top of the at.
Nine O'CLOCK so i had gotten to about three miles
from the exit and there was a massive wreck there on.
Seventy ONE and i hope the folks that were in

(22:14):
that involved with that wreck are okay because they were
hauling them out of way down in. A ditch, BUT
anyway i didn't KNOW if i was gonna make it there.
In TIME and i literally sat down about a minute
and a half before he went on, the air put the,
headphones on check, the mic and that. Was there so it.
Was close, but nevertheless we, did it and we appreciate
them having us, out there and thanks to everybody that

(22:34):
came out and. Said Hello even tom would my Good
buddy tom would stopped out and said hello. As well
but check out their Website Against columbus trees dot com
and learn more. About that It Is Kentucky. Derby saturday
and YOU know i always had my plant picks of
the WEEK that i put on our Website At ron
wilson online. Dot COM and i have several today in

(22:57):
Honor Of. Kentucky derby and OF course i Do Have kentucky.
Colonel spearmint if you're doing the, mint julips the spearmint that,
they use and check. This out they average about twenty
or about two thousand pounds of spearmint over the three Day,
Weekend friday Saturday and Sunday and louisville making. Mint julips

(23:19):
and of course the choice of Spearmant Is, kentucky colonel
and it is available most of the garden centers that
sell herbs and. Sell mints but two thousand pounds of,
that stuff. That's unbelievable but it's a great of all.
The mints it's a great. LOOKING mint i. Love spearmint
keep that one, in mind and do remember when it

(23:40):
comes to, growing mint is that mint was meant to
be grown in. A container unless you've got wide open
spaces in your garden or some really good barriers to
keep them from creeping around and spreading into. Other areas
mint is best grown, IN containers i. Think anyway That's
why i've always said men is meant to be grown.

(24:01):
In containers but it's A nice one's. Very attractive folich
smells great if you walk by it and, bruise it
brush up, against it the, oils released and of course
the spearmint flavor, is outstanding so you know that's one of. My,
picks secondly in honor of the run for, the roses,
OF course i have to bring up my favorite rose

(24:22):
of all roses. Out there It's a. Flora bunda and
for those of you who listen to our show over,
the years you know which one. It is It's called Easy.
Does IT and i don't know anybody That's grown Easy
does it rose that hasn't totally enjoyed. That rose. It's
phenomenal it is a, floora BUNDA and i always say

(24:42):
it's kind of like a fruit salad for the landscape
because this thing has clusters of these they're swirling like
the different shades kind of swirl through. The flowers they're
ruffled by. The way the petals mango orange and kind
of a peachy pink and honey, apricot scalps ruffled, blooms
spiral the plants kind. Of bushy she gets some pretty

(25:04):
good stems to use them for cuttings if you want
super glossy. Green leaves, pretty much good, disease resistance good.
Flower power they flower, like crazy but it's, called easy?
Does it and the fragrance from this flower and the beauty.
Is unbelievable and then Of course Monday is sinco. De,

(25:24):
Mayo well cinco de mayo rose is kind of looks.
Like this it's a, darker color shades of darker oranges
and maroons and reds. And all but it's a really
nice rose. As well but It's called cinco, de mayos
so we put that in there as an honorable mention for.
The roses and one last Rose That i've i've really
been impressed with over the last two years is the petite.

(25:48):
Knockout rose and here's the rose that was bred from
the double knockout and a. Miniature rose she get a
combination of between, the two and if you look, at
it the leaves are a little smaller plant. Stay smaller
the roses aren't as big as the, double knockouts but
bigger than a, miniature rose and it just stays a
nice eighteen inches or so. Maybe wide and the, nice

(26:12):
flowers they're. All doubles they, are gorgeous they are, bright
red and the flower a lot and it's been, a tough.
Durable one and again it's in the, knockout series but
it's called petit. Knockout rose looking for something? For mom
these are all great roses that are pretty much easy
to care for that mom would definitely enjoy in, Her

(26:35):
garden so keep those of mine. As well Sinco, de
mayo and of course we've got in the easy does
It Rows, Kentucky colonel spearmint and bow by the Way
for Cinco, De mayo Mohito's. On Monday mohito mints mint
is out there available for you, as well and that's
become very, very popular so you should be able To
find mohito mint right along with the Spearmint The kentucky

(26:59):

The expressway or.

Speaker 3 (27:46):

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Your? Heart, yeah no with. A reason you? Said expressway
how many songs? Have expressway you get in the CAR
and i put the top down and. Let's roll i'll think.
No idea, all right, that's okay talk about yarning and
songs that we cannot remember anymore because we're getting. Too old,

(28:08):
but anyway what you can claim that for yourself if,
You'd like but. Leave me That's what i'm talking, about me.
Not you, oh no you're you're the young are you?

we say you, tell them me and, My crew me and,
my crew you'll find out when we. Get there we'll
find out when we. Get there That's what i'll remember
that from, now on me and, my boys and Me And.
Big lou he's just. Like you he's just. LIKE you
i got A letter I told i Just. TOLD elle

(28:50):
i got a Letter From big lou in the mail
the other day. ABOUT insurance i was SO excited i actually.
Got him there was a, picture there but It Wasn't
big lou uh talking about yarning and all well. And things,
of course now you get excited because there's all. The
things that's all these things at your local garden centers
that you can be getting ready to plant or planting
as soon as this rain. Clears out and, take ADVANTAGE like,

(29:10):
I said i'm, being honest take advantage of today and
tomorrow with the. Rainy weather get out to the garden
centers and do, your shopping get all, your stuff take
it home and you might get wet a, little bit
but you get it out of the way before everybody
else jumps, out there and then you know you're going
to get. It right because it's, you know and everybody
has a shop through it. All already and do. Remember

(29:30):
THIS and i know there's going to be gaps in
some of the plants that you're, looking for but, remember
growers the garden centers. And all they grow these plants
and vegetables and annuals on, succession plantings and they'll have
several crops of let's just use Fourth of. July tomatoes

(29:51):
most growers will do a crop of Fourth of july
tomatoes that they're going to have ten flats available, this
week and ten flats available, next week and ten flats
it's available the. Following week and then they plant them
that way so that they're, you know all, different sizes
but start to, get saleable a salable size that the following
week or whatever week you're looking for it to you

(30:12):
have them on. The table they do that on purpose
to carry the plants all the way Through you they
just don't grow one crop and then when, they're gone.
They're gone they grow several of them to carry them
all the, way through and then they're not big and
leggy if you don't sell them at the. Very beginning so,
you know ask if you don't see it on. The
table ask because there's a real good chance they've got.

(30:34):
More coming and sometimes if they're, extremely busy like they
will be, next week in the, following week the ones
that were slated for the following week wind up getting
pushed into the, week before and so there sometimes can
be a little bit of a. Gap there, please remember
we've got time to plant, these annuals. ALL right i,

(30:54):
have planted and You know i've told you there's a
million times on. THIS show i have planted vegetables at
the end Fourth. Of july it's usually my cutoff, right
there Fourth. Of july Fourth, of july that's two. Months
away so, you know you might not find exactly what
you're looking for Later in May and june when it
comes to tomatoes and peppers and things, like that but
you will, find them and you'll find maybe something new

(31:16):
that you've never. Grown before so, you, know again everybody
tries to get out early and, grab It and i'm
telling you to do. That today i'm giving you. Some
advice but if you go in there in a couple
of weeks and they're out of a lot, of stuff
ask because there's a real good chance that they're going
to get it in later when the next crop, comes
along or maybe. They aren't they'll tell you that and
you look for. Something different but you've got a long

(31:37):
way to go as far as planting, these annuals, planting
perennials trees and shrubs the. Same way, you know we
try to get them in trees and shrubs, in that,
you know by the middle latter Part, of june so
you can kind of get a settled in before we get.
Really hot but we've. Got time we're talking a good
six to eight weeks here of good, planting weather so

(31:57):
you know we're good. To go but take advantage of
days like the day, and tomorrow get out to those
local garden centers when they're not quite as busy and
makes it easier on you and me. As, well also
once we get this rain out, of here we need
you to get out in your yard, and garden start
walking around and do The old mannis by walking around,

(32:17):
right now you know aphis with all this new growth
coming on aphids sucking insect that last year was a
year of the aphiens already started to see them on
a lot of plants that you can jump on it
early and get them. Under control. If necessary in some
case you might not have to spray, at all but
at least what you're doing is walking and looking. And
monitoring if you have roses that you have had problems

(32:40):
with rose slugs where they put the holes in, the
leaves they turn brown and all of, a sudden these
holes appear in. The leaves they. Look horrible the plants
continue to grow, and flower and all of that they.
Look horrible it's called. Rose slugs it's a. Sawfly larvae
it looks like. A caterpillar they're very small on the
under side of. The leaf The reason i'm bringing that

(33:00):
up is there are or can be multiple generations, of
those and they start. Fairly, early well you could start
fairly early too by using a systemic insecticide that you
would use as a soil drench around the bottom of
that rose to get taken, up inside so that when
and if the rose slugs do start to feed on

(33:22):
the undersides of those, rose leaves you've already got the
systemic in. The leaf now they'll still have to take
a little chew, on there but you have, those there
and once you, get those you now come back with
a insecticidal soap or horticulture oil spray the underside of
the leaf and get them into check before they do
a lot of damage to your roses if you don't

(33:43):
do anything. At all, all right they, look horrible but
they will typically make it. Through there you can also
hose them off if. You want you can Go from
you've got to hose up from the. Bottom up but
my point being is where you may need to use,
systemic insecticides you probably need to get on it so
so that it's taken up inside the plant for. The
protection if you need to protect plants from, leaf diseases

(34:06):
maybe you've got your, crab apples get the scab or
or or rust or some of, those issues and you've
gotten it. Every, year well, guess what you need to
jump on that right away to protect those new leaves
as they're, coming along to protect them from. The diseases
the fruits and barriers are the. Same way you know
you've got to and fungicidal sprays are done basically as,

(34:30):
a preventative rarely as, a curative although that does, happen
occasionally but again you've got to get on it. And
early so these are things you want to make sure
you're getting taken care. Of you obviously you couldn't do
this with, a rainfall but once it, moves out you
got to jump in there and. Do that so keep
those types of things in mind as you're walking around
looking at the at the yard and garden of you

(34:52):
know things that you need. To do those are, the
systemics the, fungicidal applications watching, for. Insects monitoring when you
do find things that you think, aren't right if you're
not sure what, it is don't just spray. For it
find out what it, is first decide whether or not
is to be sprayed or anything needs to. Be done
some cases you just kind of clip them off or

(35:13):
smash them with your hand and it's a. Done deal
but do keep that. In mind, but again we need
to make sure we're out looking and checking just to
make sure that's out there grass. RIGHT now i know
that's been a. Real issue Talking With mike, elliott yesterday
he jumped. On it got it before this rain came back.
In again try to get in there as much as
you can. And mow want to keep mowing on a.

(35:33):
Regular basis try to never remove more than a third
of that grass blade each time, you mow, and please
please please throw those grass blades back into. The turf
when you don't do that and you collect up those,
grass blades you're wasting fertilizer nutrients that are already in
that grass blade that you're. Cut off you're taking. It

(35:57):
away if you put it back in, the ground you're adding.
Organic matter and remember those grass blades are ninety seventy
five eighty. Percent water they break. Down quickly but you're
putting nutrients back in. The soil and earthworms will love
you for that. As well and you know we need
to pamper. Those earthworms so, you know keep mowing the
grass as best you can two and a half three

(36:17):
and a half. Inches high never remove more of the
third Of grass blazes's time you mow and put them
back into. The. Turf please probably the ONLY times i
would ever suggest that you bag it is if it's
really tall and it's, really wet and you got a
lot of grass and you're taking off more than the
third of the blade and it's laid on. The top
you don't want that. To happen that's one time you may.

(36:38):
Bag it or if it's got a couple leaf diseases
that we're trying to get rid. Of it sometimes we'll
bag it, for that but otherwise don't. Do it and
if you're seeing some weeds starting to pop up here,
and there which, they are Don't get i'm saying it
is my. Personal opinion don't do the whaed. And feed
don't do the whaed. And feed good chances your lawn
doesn't need to be fed at. This stage i'll be

(37:00):
already growing like. A weed use a broad leaf weed
killer that covers most of the weeds that you would
have in. Your yard try to identify what. They are
but if. You can't broad leaf weed killer, that covers,
you know does a wide cover and spot treat the weeds.
As needed you can find it and ready to use
in a pumped sprayer or concentrate that you can mix

(37:20):
in your own tanks prayer and go through and spot
treat those weeds. As needed, All right no need to
put down a weed and feed over your. Entire yard.
Not necessary thanks to all, Our callers thanks to. Our
sponsor thanks of Course, to ella our producer and also
great at playing out. BUMPER music i love it for
all that, she does because without all, another stuff. What Happens,

(37:41):
so ella thank you, so much. For everything now do yourself.
A favor get out to the local garden centers. This
Weekend and i'm telling you take. MY advice i think
you're gonna you're gonna. Appreciate that but get mom taking
care of this weekend so you got it ready for
it for. Next weekend keep planting, those trees keep planning those,
pollinator plants be ee friendly in, your garden, pollinator light
paring for. Your worms so by, all means make it

(38:02):
the best weekend of. Your life, see you
