Faults, YEAH i happened to be down at The Cincinnati
Botanical garden in zoo And Steve goldfinger folks, yes, well
we're walking around and looking at plants and uh which
they They if you haven't seen that elephant exhibit, yet that's.
Phenomenal but, anyway oh, yeah and it was amazing all

the junipers that HAD i, mean we're just coated with.
That you pulled a stem down and they were just
coated with it like somebody smear the peach jelly all
over the. Place that's what it looks.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Like and that's the way we described these gelatinous masses
that appear on the stems of. Junipers but the name
of a disease it can throw people off because in
this case it is called Cedar quint's, rust and the
cedar comes from eastern red, cedar which you know the

(07:28):
avid gardeners here In. Ohio, no that's actually a Juniper
jennifer's for. Ginnyina and cedar quince rust is one of
what we call dioecious, rusts meaning that it needs to
have two different hosts in order to complete its disease.
Cycle one host is a. Juniper the other host is

(07:48):
a member of the rose Family. Rose and in this,
case you, know the name of the disease was quint
cedar quinn because we already had another one called Peter
apple and a whole different one called cedar hawthorn. Russ
those names are taken, up but it could be a
little confusing because you, know you AND i have talked

(08:11):
about cedar quince russ for years because they favored rose
host is. Hawthorne SO i just probably confused a bunch
of listeners that they're, saying wait a, second is it
cedar hawthorn rust or cedar quince? Truss this is cedar
quince russ on. Hawthorn and again there's another fungus that
causes cedar hawthorn russ on. Hawthorn but we find that

those symptoms on the leaves with cedar, quinchruss though it
infects the, halls it infects the. Fruit and, Again, ron for,
years we've talked about. This you have a beautiful hawthorn,
tree Which i've always loved hawthorn to be, honest they're they,
can they bloom, beautifully they can have you, know fruit

of great. Interest, however if.

Cockspur, yes, yes and they're pretty solid, trees aren't they
not big trees so they won't get in power.

it's pretty, cool and the garden center's, phenomenal but you
got to see these. Dinosaurs you'll love. It but, anyway
talking With Buggy Joe, boggs he is back and guess

Me OKAY i won't, then, well no tell me. Please Every,
well whenever we come out to The delaware, location they
usually have, donuts which they, do and white. Castles oh my,
GOODNESS i have one of. EACH i have a cheese
and a plane. Slider so breakfast, champions breakfast champions right.
HERE i got, gatorade my zero gatorade and two white.

THERE i MEAN i was up there AND i don't

Right so we're talking about these, rusts AND i know
you want to make sure you get through on that.
Is you, know we saw a lot of them we
were down. THERE i haven't seen much of it, here
But i'm sure it's out. There you, know with all
this rainfall we've, had you, know is this setting us
up for a more possible diseased spring. Season you, know.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
That's that's an excellent. Point just following The Peter quince
rush for, example hop. ORNs you, know what we're talking
about is that when the fruit becomes, infected it actually
comes infected just when the flowers are, pollinated so very early,
on and that's you, know that can throw people. Off

(12:08):
but what then turns happens is we start seeing these
these tendrils that grow out of the, fruit and then
from those tindrils we get orange, spores very. Orange that's
where the rush name comes. From for the rose host
and of course it's more of a. Nouisance it doesn't

(12:28):
really cause any harm or anything like that unless those
spores drift over to a, juniper because remember it has
to have two. Hosts it has to go back and.
Forth but when the hawthorn fruit becomes infected and we
start getting the rush dropping on to like, say black,
asphalt it can look unsightly and probably folks they're you,

(12:53):
know nodding their, heads you, know, saying, yeah they've seen.
That the one though that.

Weird, no they're nodding their heads because they're enjoying the white. Castle,
quite that's, true that, Right and perhaps donuts and the.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Tree that we're becoming a little more concerned about are
calorie pears because three four years, AGO i need to
go back and look this, up we had a situation
here In Greater cincinnati where the calorie pear fruit became
so infected that we had this huge amount of rost

(13:27):
force falling on the, cars you, know on the, streets
on the, sidewalk slow moving, GARDENERS i. Think but the
point is that it looked like cheeto. Dusts it looked
exactly like that at very, orange and it caused quite a. Concern,
again no, harm it's just that if we have these

(13:48):
high levels of, infection you, know we could constantly see.
That but that also applies to Other as you just said,
that there are a number of tree, diseases most of
which really don't amount so. MUCH i should say that
we're not talking about killers like the anthract most diseasy
that can occur on oaks and maples and so. Forth

(14:12):
usually we see much higher infections OR i should say,
symptoms because weather in the spring and, cool wet weather
in the spring really helps the fungi to enhance the
infections by the. Fungi, so you, know we may want
to mark this day, down this conversation, down because in

(14:35):
a month or, so we could, start you, know picking
up you, know some of these symptoms and why did they? Happen,
well because we had environmental conditions that were conducive to.

Infection, well let me ask you this talking about the
pairs getting that AND i do, remember AND i thought
the picture of your hand with that on there was
interesting because it was really when you just got finished
eating the cheetos out of A cheeto. Bag but it was,
yeah but it was very very. Similar, yes so it.
Was it was a great. Comparison it just had shown

your face and your mustache. Too but, nevertheless with all
of the pears that have you, know the invasive now
everywhere have we seen that on? Them also including the
ornamentals that were in. Landscapes you, know asked an excellent.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Question, Yes as a matter of, fact over the past few,
years WHERE i have seen the heaviest infections have been
out in the. Wild you. Know WHEN i say, THAT
i mean where these calorie pairs weren't, planted. Right but
also that's where we also see high variability in the fruit.

(15:44):
Production that was something that these pears were you, know
supposed to not, do, RIGHT i mean earlier we thought
that they wouldn't. Cross so you'll see varying sizes of.
Fruit but there's a key, here a key, point and
that is that if you, recall calorie pair would bloom
at different times depending on the, cultivar right, Right and

(16:07):
remember there's it's very important that the, flowers OR i
should say The nathan fruits is only susceptible to infection
at a very brief. Period so if you have a
cultivar that is at just the right point or, infection
then we'll see. It if it's off by a, week

(16:28):
we won't see. It so when you go out in
these wild stands of calorie, pears you can kind of
pick out the ones that were you know that we're
at a susceptible, stage you, know during the time of,
infection and others that. Weren't but why that's so important
is remember that those pairs then will release spores that

(16:49):
go to. Juniverse AND i have no data AND i
have no scientific proof of. This this is pure. Speculation
but you, know maybe one reason and that we're seeing
a little more higher levels of infections on junipers could
possibly be because of the greater number of escaped pairs out.

(17:09):
There that's just, Speculation Ron.

Great i'm just curious BECAUSE i know most of the
pictures that we've, seen especially was on the, sidewalk and
that's you were trying to make a, point, obviously but
whether or not we were seeing that on the ornamental
pair or the invasive, ones you, Know and again that
just adds to. It now we're also planting more of
the red cedars in the.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Landscape it's, true it is, true and they and of
course the disease is named after, them so it stands
to reason that they're pretty highly, susceptible which does bring
up a good. Point though research that was done years
ago does indicate there's a wide range of susceptibility among the.
Junipers that's important for nursery production in. Particular you, know

(17:56):
in other, words if you did have junipers in anurth
tree or in your landscaping is less, successible then obviously
you won't you probably won't see any of these. Infections
the point, though with the timing is relative to if
somebody has a juniper and they're showing these, orange you,
know spore, bodies should they do anything about it or

(18:19):
can they do anything about? It and the downside is,
that really ron it's only it's only practical to go
after suppressing the fungus in a nursery because that, way
because there's going to be multiple applications of. Fungicides timing is,
critical and let's face, it you, know even at our

(18:40):
own homes we have a hard time keeping. Up so
it is important to recognize that this isn't going to
affect all. Junipers but this year it does seem to
be Pretty it's pretty, widespread isn't.
