Great great website BYG l dot ALWAYS u dot e D.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
U good, morning, sir good.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Morning i'll tell. You does the word spontaneous combustion the
enter your mind when you're? Outside, now, Really i'm telling
YOU i.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
DID i, said, okay BECAUSE I I i you, KNOW
i used to bike a lot and things like AND
i love biking during the heat of the. Day of
course you're moving and the winds around blowing your, right
BUT i like actually working out in the heat of the.
Day i've always it's never bothered me that. Much BUT
i went out There wednesday afternoon about three o'clock AND
(01:51):
I i got about forty minutes into WHAT i was
doing and, said.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Uh huh, yeah, yeah it's uh, well and it's interesting
because we've had the humidity has been up and, down
and so you, say you know that old you, know
it's not the heat's. Amidity, no it's the. HEAT i
mean we had low humidity that one, day and but
it was still.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Hot still.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Hot, yeah it's like it's like the Old arizona, thing you.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Know, yeah, yeah it's not, hot it's.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
You, know it's not, human so it's still.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Hot actually that's. True that's exactly WHEN i was out
there In tucson growing. UP i it was it was.
BAD i mean it was, well my my my my
brother was in The Air force out there at Stationed, Davis.
MONTON i went out To, busines was in junior high
and it was you, know it was just a whole
new world.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Thought we grew up In.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Tucson oh, NO i didn't Grow oh, yes was growing
up In.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Tucson, really that's, yeah that's.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Right we fled To. Tucson but it was it was
an experience THAT i, mean you, know entirely of course
as we know different and, uh but the heat was the,
HEAT i, mean, yes the humidity was down so low that,
frankly you. Dehydrated you didn't catch, fire you just went
out and dried up like a.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Razor, yeah you just shriveled.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Up it shriveled. Up but speaking of, SHRILL i don't
know where to go with, that BECAUSE i, was, WELL
i was going to talk about something that NORMALLY i
don't get on these soapboxes ron neither one of us, too.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
BUT i do.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
OCCASIONALLY i had a couple about two weeks.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Ago, yeah, yeah, occasionally you just have to occasionally just
have to, say, look enough, enough let's get to the
root of the.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Matter things just bought too. Much it's like That i'm
going to say, something.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah well in this, case AND i posted on this
in twenty eighteen that there were some ants found In
cincinnati that could sting and actually delivered a pretty painful.
Sting now we actually we have ants that. STING i,
mean we always have to. Remember ants belong to the Order,
hymenoptra so they are related to wasps and.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Bees and.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Hornets so they do have the ovipositors that, candy you,
know formed into a defense mechanism called. Stinger, Right, so
and some ants can, sting and of course you, know
if you're down further, south you know they can. Sing
with the fire, ants, right they deliver pretty pretty heavy dity. Sting,
(04:28):
well the ants that we found In, cincinnati AND i
want to stress this a single colony and it was.
Destroyed the common name for the ants are The asian needle,
ant and it gets the name because of the. Stinger,
now they're not at all, aggressive that's first of. All
THAT'S i want to be very clear about this my
(04:49):
understanding with fire. Ants of course we're dealing with more
than one species in the SOUTHEASTERN. Us but fire ants
can actually be a little. Aggressive you, know they don't
just kind of mess. Around if you threaten their, colony
they may kind of come after, you, Right but these
these needle, ants you, REALLY i mean the colony we
(05:10):
were looking, at they were running. Away we were right
in their, colony you, know pulling away leaves AND i
want to get back to, that and they were running.
Away they're not very. Aggressive the other point is that
they are meat. Eaters, now all ants to some degree
are meat. Eaters they're, scavengers but these actually have a
very close relationship with, termites and they kind of treat
(05:34):
termites like.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
A herd of.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Cattle they, always The asian needle ants always locate their
nests very close to, termites almost, always and in, fact
the literature says always that they're never found a part
and then they just go With they don't raid the.
Termites they just go in and pluck them off like
the other going out and gathering from their, herd right.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Or two and take them.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Home, yeah and just coming. Home, yeah we're going to
be cooking out. Today. Boys you know it's going to
be our. Girls RATHER i should have said, so so
they do. It they were found In, ohio in one
place In, cincinnati and that's. It we've since twenty and.
Eighteen they were found in twenty, seventeen but they weren't
confirmed BY usda to Be asian needle ants until twenty.
(06:25):
Eighteen the colony was obliterated and that was. That, well
over the last week or so there have been these
these reports in our news media that that they're they're.
ARRIVING i, mean you, know one of the headlines invasion
invasy Of asian needle ant with the potentiality with potentially
(06:47):
fatal sting found in potentially Fatal, yeah it was just
kind of that was during Our tuesday morning big old In,
service zoom in service where we all get. Together Eric
draper up In Jaga. County report of this he said that, that,
yeah you, know there are these headlines what's going on?
(07:08):
Here and then last WEEK i got a phone call
from a homeowner In jamestown In Green, county and she
declared that her home was being invaded by the, ants
and of course it. Wasn't and here's the Point i'm
trying to drive. At it is true that these ants
are now found in THE. Us they're native To asia
(07:31):
and so native To, China, Japan, korea but they're not.
New they were first found In, Decatur georgia in nineteen
thirty four run so they're not new to THE, us
and they are more highly. Concentrated if you go look
at the Big ol' alert THAT i, POSTED i show
(07:51):
a map where they've been, confirmed AND i mean if
you go to the website where this map originated and
clicked on each, individual it actually gives you the source
of the, confirmation so it's not just made. Up you,
know there has to be some. Backing so they're more
highly concentrated in the, south, southern Southeastern United. States there's
(08:14):
one way up In, washington there's one In, wisconsin and for,
example In ohio it shows a, dot but the whole
state is colored in you see Where i'm heading. It
it has not been confirmed In columbus Or cleveland or anywhere. Else,
now they might they might, exist can you know with
any non? Natives you know they may, exist but we
(08:37):
should never ever just leap to that conclusion based on
a media. Report you, know they're they're coming our. Way
and we do have a very good way to confirm
it OUR Osu plant And Pest Diagnostic. Clinic so if
you go online and just type In Ohio State University
plant And Pest Diagnostic, clinic you can find out how
(08:59):
to send specimen to the. Clinic we have excellent people
there and at the end of the day it may
or may not, be but we do want people to
send in specimens if they've gotten. Stung and that brings
kind of another bit of, confusion which do we have
time before the.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Break where you want to, Wait let's let's let's take a.
Break we'll come back and continue on BECAUSE i want
to make sure we were able to cover. This talking
to the Buggy Joe boggs about is it would ever
be fake?
Speaker 3 (09:27):
News, well it's borderline.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Not, fake but, YEAH i got to readom between lines,
anyway more with us about the the ants and all
after the break here on news radio six to TEN,
wtv in time for part two of The Buggy Joe
Boggs report here on news radio six' ten wtv and
talking about. Stinging ants are they? Really here are they?
(09:53):
Not here what is?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
The?
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Story joe.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Get us with.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
The, FACTS first i need to, say This and i'm
not trying, to minimize, you know a. Possible threat, you
know anytime a person has stung, by hymenoptrine so that
venom can trigger what we call an, anaphylectic, reaction right
it can cause people, to have, you know a very
(10:19):
serious reaction in. Sensitive individuals but the REPORT that, i
posted the big old ALERT that, I posted i did
SOMETHING that i normally don't do a. Lot of when you,
read it ron you'll see and again let's just go
to the B yg L website Buckeyeyard And garden line
or BYGL dot osu. Dot edu you'll see this as
(10:42):
a little more like a scientific, paper report MEANING that
i cite the Literature that i'm, referring to so people
can go down and each scientific paper has a hot
link that they can go read it. For themselves so,
for example With these asian. Needles lance, You, know first
the very first report of a, possible antiphylaxis well actually it,
(11:06):
wasn't possible was in two thousand and Six In north
carolina as a sixty seven year, old gentleman and he,
was treated, he survived but he was also hyper sensitive
to multiple species of, stinging insects so he's already kind.
Of preloaded and then there was a study done there
(11:28):
were Some in greenville At The greenville Zoo, In Greenville,
south carolina and there were nine zoo keepers that. Experienced
stinging there were no reports. Of anaphylexus, in fact eighty
percent of them didn't even have much of. A reaction
and then a big report that came Out, of korea
(11:51):
and this this is actually a little, while ago showed
out of it was three hundred and sixty SEVEN people
i think, It was i'm just looking for it. Right
now they showed that there was only that there were
there was only, four people three hundred and. Twenty seven
(12:13):
only four people out of that had an. Anaphylactic reaction
so So what i'm saying here, is, that okay we
have to keep open, the possibility but with one point
two percent of the people at a highly infested Area
in korea where, they're native where the, answer native that's.
PRETTY low, i mean those odds are. Pretty. GOOD ron,
(12:35):
I mean i'm not, saying right, ignore It but i'm
just saying that that's hardly something, to cause, you know
the kind of panic that seemed to. Be presented so
the first THING that i, said before these ants are
also not going to likely be nesting in your House.
In asia occasionally it, does happen but it does happen for.
(12:56):
Some REASONS remember i said they're very closely associated, with
termites so that means they're most often found in. Our
woods if you're out in, the woods, you know, digging
around you may come across these in areas where they.
Are located IN, southeastern us, of course you're more likely
to actually come across. Something worse the fire ants, that
(13:21):
yeah and they have you. KNOW there, i mean there
have been people that have been stung to death by. Fire,
ants again it's, not real, real common but it just it.
Can't occur the other place that concerns, us though would be,
in mulch and then also in composts where someone's not turning.
The compost but the BOTTOM line i want to go
(13:43):
back and just reiterate, only one only one colony Found
in ohio so far Confirmed, in ohio and it. Was,
destroyed now in terms of if a person would come,
across these it's not a. Bad idea. They do they
do cause. Great harm they are non native ants and
(14:05):
they do outcompete our, native ants so we don't want
to see them in. Our woods but usually we would
tell you if we're dealing with something like, fire ants we'd,
immediately say, you know you use. An ant bait works
very effectively and very and, very concisely meaning, that debates,
you know don't kill a lot of other types of. Insects,
(14:27):
obviously however those baits are often related or often depend
on taking advantage of the ants having a. Sweet tooth
asian needle ants do not have a. Sweet tooth fire
ants and a lot of our non native ants that
are found IN the us they actually make a bit
(14:49):
make a living by tending aphids and extracting honeydew in
exchange for defending. The Aphids the asian needle ants don't.
Do that they are stri. Meat eaters they go AFTER like, i.
Said termites so if baits are dependent on a sweet
tooth that or sweet mandibles or whatever when they say
they won't. Work well the other thing that is often
(15:12):
used in baits is it relies on putting ants putting down.
Pheromone tracks we've all, seen THIS and i even have
a picture of pavement ants marching in a line because
they'll put down a pheromone trail and the other ants
can follow that to a.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Food.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Source, right Well the asian needle ants do, That either
so the baits don't work. Very well but there was
a study that was published in Twenty thirteen athletics. Is
Fascinating the asian needle ants are so closely associated with
termites that if baits contain extracts from the cuticle, of
termites it actually caused them to. Work, better now so
(15:53):
far that hasn't. Been done so what we Did, in
cincinnati because it was in a location where, you know
people could possibly stumble into the, nest area wasn't a.
Big nest we used, a rake we opened, it up
and then we directly sprayed and insecticide labeled for that
use into the nest to to to send them off into.
(16:17):
Ant heaven and that's probably going to be what people
will will be doing if if. They're CONFIRMED and i
want to SAY that i can't stress that enough because
we have Ants in ohio that that can deliver very.
Serious bites in, other words you might think you're getting
(16:37):
stung because they bite you and then they turn around
and inject a little and just and just spew a
little bit of formatic acid into, the wound and. It
stings you, Know it it might make you think that
you're getting. Stung again you know. It isn't you're not.
Being stung It's not asian. Needle ants but if you
do have the suspicion that you're being stung and that
(16:59):
these are In fact asian, NEEDLE lands i just want
to stress you get a sample To our Plant And
pest diagnostic clinic because, number one we want.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
To know surely where.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
These are and number two is that you don't want
to become concerned if It isn't asian. Needle lands so
that's my soapbox for. THE day i KNOW that i
spent the whole time, on this but, THAT'S yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
I, GET it i. Get it, and, again uh, you
know if you're, not sure don't. Feel embarrassed box them
up and send them, IN anyway i hope we're hoping,
you're wrong and but you'll find out exactly what. It
is the, the uh the posting that you, put out
is that SOMETHING that i, WILL have i have gotten
ALREADY or i will.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Be, Getting, Yes oh, I'M sorry i sent it, out, yesterday.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
OKAY because i didn't see.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
That. Way, yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Yeah uh and, it HAS like, i said it has
all the literature associated with it's a scientific papers so
people can read about THEY'RE really i have to, tell
you they're kind of. FASCINATING ants, i, mean frankly, EVERY
entomologist i think at some level find ants fascinating because,
you know one thing we tend. To forget our, native ants,
(18:11):
for example play a real strong role in. DISTRIBUTING seed
a lot of people don't, realize this but a lot,
of plants, these ants our native ants will go out
will actually collect seed and move. It around so that
helps in, our forests, for example for moving around a
number of different. Native plants and so the ants are
(18:31):
very important for the ecology of. Our force and they
also do a lot of. Other services they're the clean.
Up crew, you know they go they do forage and and,
you know keep down. The litter and so on and. So
FORTH so, I Mean i'm i'm just scratching the surface
when you really, dig IN and i don't mean, TO
well i just really did something There didn't if you
(18:52):
really dig, into ants you, find, that yes they. Are
there they are a. Critical part they serve as critical
roles not just, inforced ecology but then the ecology of other.
Terrestrial habitats so very, important insects and we don't want
to see people panicking and getting carried away and, you
know on any ant that we Find. In ohio but, once,
(19:15):
again yeah just make sure you're getting them or getting.
Them identified and we hope that they don't show up
here in any numbers as they have in In, the carolinas,
For example they've become pretty common in parts Of.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
The carolinas we've run out.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Of time but the question, would be you can address
this some. OTHER time i wonder how your hybrid ant
lions can handle that type of. An ant you can't answer,
that today but you can answer maybe.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
NEXT week i Let's say i'm going to write that
down because that's a. Good one because we're just about
ready to post an ant. Lion alert i'm starting to
see A few.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
I Would oh i've had them for about three.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Weeks now, oh, really yeah. My, goodness okay well there.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
You go, all right we'll look. In it we'll.
Speaker 1 (20:03):

a pleasure excuse me to have the TEAM From the
osu extension available for us to use and. Share their
information and again just go to their website you'll. Check
(20:57):
it out IT'S bygl dot. Issu dot edu always good.
At info there what you might find sometimes when you
look at those postings is they may not tell you
how to take care of what, they're talking about and
they have to be very careful about that as far
as giving, you control measures specific. Products and all they've
done that OCCASIONALLY on some i think the box tree
(21:18):
moth issue about what to spray with that and a.
Few other things but sometimes they don't get into those
details specifically don't but we can always help you out and.
All of that but they do such. A great job,
so you know check in there every couple weeks and
find out what those, new postings are or Our Website
at ron wilson online dot com because we do POST
(21:39):
those that i Get weekly from. Joe as, well real
quick before we go back to the guarding phone, LINES
this week i stay IN touch what, i Call Them
the three stingers beekeepers Here, In The columbussary teresa parker
And Of course nina bagley and Of Course, The Queen.
Bee Barbie bletcher and nina sent a little video out a,
(21:59):
couple days go and. It was hot. It was hot
she was trying to do this early in the morning
showing one of her hives are just. Loaded with honey
so it looks like it's been a very productive spring
season for the local beekeepers so far. For the honey
and she's out. There getting that. That's hard work you
don't realize what it takes. To do that and, point
(22:20):
being is looks like it's going to be. A good
spring get out and support your local beekeepers because if
you want to keep, the bees happy you got to
keep the bee keeper happy because they keep. The bees
happy but you need to support, These local beekeepers so buy,
the local honeys which you're going to find out starting
to arrive on the shelves again if they're not there
already from the harvesting that you're. Doing right now it's
(22:41):
at that time of the year for, that spring harvest
so it. Looks pretty good and she also sent me,
was really cool sent. Me a picture she takes some
great pictures by the way, of her bees but she
sent me a picture of the side of one. Of
her hives. The other day they come out of the
hive to cool down and they had formed a perfect
oh on the side. OF the, hive i mean it's,
(23:04):
a PERFECT oh and i Just wish the hive next
year would have had an h on there would. Have
been outstanding but. It's the perfect oh, on the side
they know where, they're being raised Right, Here. In columbus,
ohio all right before we, Take a Break, Dick from, Dayton.

last week but they came out with a. Buckeye tick
test did we? Talk about, THAT if not i want to.
Mention it, again you know ticks have been really the
populations have been. High this year i've got found them
on me two or three times. On the, dog you
know the. Whole nine yards and you know it used
TO be when, i DON'T know when i, was a
(26:42):
kid you got a, TICK on you i just. Picked
it off as a. Matter of fact back then was
the days where you, burn it off you. Know, Or
whatever uh, but you know you didn't think too. Much about,
it and, today of course with all The diseases, that
tink vector the different ones that Were the, can victor
vector it makes you a little bit more nervous if
they wind up being, attached to you and if there's,
crawling on you you feel that for. ABOUT three DAYS
(27:04):
i swear i could feel things crawling on me for
three days or. Four days anyway so they put together
a website and an actual thing where you can. Have
the tick if there's one, attached to you you can,
take it off remove it and send it to them
and they can tell you what kind of ticket is
and if it, has any diseases and it's. It's really
(27:27):
cool and the labs Right, here in columbus and the
website that you go to or to find out more
about it is ticks at osu dot eedu TICS at
os u dot e du and it's a book eye
TIC test and i think. That's pretty cool and now
you can kind of take, the worry away because, sometimes
you know you just don't you kind of sit back
(27:49):
and wait and you're not sure what's. Going to, happen
and uh now you. Don't have to you can send
it in and uh and they'll be able to test
that particular tick that was on you and find out
if you good to. Go or, not so again IT'S
ticks at osu. Dot e tu if you have a
ticke attached to you or somebody, that you know and
(28:09):
you can have a test it and find out, for
you know whether or not we're. Good to go also
at a gentleman last week asked me about using cooking
oil as. A SOIL amendment had i heard? Anything ABOUT
that and i have never heard about using soil cooking
oil as, A soil AMENDMENT and so i told them
i'd look into, it THIS week and i did some investigation.
(28:31):
LOOKING at it i think bottom line is it's some
people have been playing, around with. It, you know obviously
a way to get, rid of, it you know especially
use cooking oils is if we can use it as
a soil amendment or. Accomplishing OR whatever and i Think
from what i've, gotten so, FAR and no i would not. Recommend, Doing,
IT right no i do not. Recommend doing It but
(28:53):
what i've gotten out of this so far is that
they're experimenting with it to see how they can try
to use it. In OTHER ways but i think overall generally,
it's not recommended especially if it's. USED cooking, oil i
mean they looked at what. It could do the soil,
doesn't break down it can cause you know, we're, talking
(29:13):
about well maybe can, help hold moisture but then it can.
Also block moisture it can hinder nutrient efficiency from the soil.
For the plants it can slow down, decomposed you. Know
decomposing process on, the same token in some cases they
use some in compost the piles that really, heat it
up and it seemed like it actually helped it to
heat up a. Little bit more but it kind of went.
(29:36):
Back AND forth but i think so far FROM everything,
THAT i read, i, WOULD say no i would, not
use it whether it's new or used cooking oil as
a soil amendment or in. MY compost pile i will
continue to look into this more and more and see
what other research. Has been done, but you know there's
(29:56):
a couple of RESEARCH things that i had read was
not really inconclusive as far as how, they would recommend,
if at all using it besides composting seemed to come
up two or three. Times hot composting. But that's it
kathy got about a minute and a, Half, To, go, Kathy.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
YES hi hi.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
I haven't been able to listen to you all year
because we have. Been VERY busy but i do love.
Listening to you but. We're desperate here we live in
the woods and we have like three pairs of orioles
and masses, of not masses. But several hummingbirds have a
(30:40):
hummingbird seat that we would wake. Up and see we
would wake up and they. Would be empty we strung
up a line between the trees so. That, whatever risket.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Okay. WE'RE losing. YOU i can't i can't hear. What
you're saying we're kind. Of breaking up so here's what. We're,
Gonna do, Uh we're, Gonna we're gonna we're gonna drop you.
BECAUSE we're gonna i can't run out. Of time here
i've got a guest coming up in the, next half

the bottom, of the hour we'll try to reconnect with you. At,
that time okay but you were kind, of breaking, up
all right and we'll we'll look at it that way
(31:20):

get back through at the end of the bottom of, the,
next hour uh Email me and i'll try to help
you out. There as well because coming up in our,
