Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome. I'm Ron Wilson. You're in the garden here on
news radio six' TEN. Wtvn if you'd like to join,
us love to have you our number eight two to
ONE wtvn eight hundred and six to ten wtv and
talking about. Yardening, yeah are you getting? Excited it looks
like the weather's going to finally start to break a
little bit warmer weather tomorrow AND i don't, know looking
over the next couple of, weeks maybe starting to warm.
(00:23):
Up but, bait are you out and about already starting to?
Look have you visited your local independent garden center? Yet
you know they've already they're as far as the seed,
packs the seed racks are all, In they're all stocked
with those plants are coming in like crazy. Now some
of the cool season stuff's, there most of the hard,
goods all the new products are typically in by. Now
(00:45):
pottery is pretty well set, up all the potting, soils
so you, know things like.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
That you want to get out and kind.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Of smell the garden store that you, know it's like
smelling mulching and flowering hyacins and. Ed's you, know it's
a little bit of the spring seasons for fresh moode,
grass you, know kind of stimulates the. Brain, well same
thing going into your local independent garden. Center so you,
know this would be a great weekend to get out
and maybe two. Around i've always said the thing that's,
(01:11):
cool AND i do this myself About columbus is that you,
know we've got the garden center set, up and everybody
does you know everybody's you, know they're all locally owned
in the garden, centers right and they and they have
some of the same, products but they all do their
own separate. Thing you'll find something different the way the
plants they use and the way they set up things or.
(01:31):
Whatever you'll find something different than all those garden. Centers
and it can be fun to actually start out in the,
morning and of course you can listen to our show
on the car radio as you drive around and just
kind of spend an hour or so at each of
the garden, centers seeing what they're doing and checking out
what's coming, in get some of their lists and some
of their tip sheets and ready for the spring, season
(01:52):
and you, know have lunch somewhere and then finish out the.
DAY i think it's. Outstanding you can visit, three four
or five garden centers in a. Day make it a weekend.
Deal maybe just, yeah that would be a lot of fun.
Too so you, know get out and visit and start,
seeing feeling talking to, uh get that feeling of what's
(02:13):
what's going, on what's new and exciting at each of
the garden. Centers and LIKE i, say they all. Do
they have, similarities but they all do their own thing
and it's IT'S i Think columbus has always been blessed
with great garden. Centers, uh great staffs at all of,
them plants and all just absolutely. Wonderful so you, know
get out and visit and and get yourself kind of
(02:34):
in the. Mood and by the, way you, know if
speaking of getting in the mood as far as the,
GARDENING i think you, know if you haven't done anything,
yet if you've kind of been ignoring the, yard kind
of standing out of stand away from it might be
a good weekend and get, out start walking around and
taking a look. Around AND i look at it this
way AS i look at it right. Now if you're
haven't been, out but you're going to get out and
now start to look, around use the time right off
(02:57):
the bat for two.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
THINGS i look at it this.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Way take an inventory of what needs to be, done
AND i think you've got a couple lists. There you
got things that have to be taken care, of and
then you have things that you might want to you
would like to do to have done this spring. Season you,
know you got your regulard clean up and maintenance and
mulching and you, know replacements and all of that on one.
List and then you may have other things on the
(03:20):
other list that you want to do and change or, redo,
replant add, this do. That have those two lists, together
and this has been a great weekend to get out
and walk around and do. That and then while you're doing,
that carry a pair of bruders in your pocket and
start picking up sticks and debris that's been blown in
over the wintertime or fell out of your trees or
(03:42):
whatever it may, be and start cleaning, up picking up
a little. Bit and if you have any evergreens out
there that you see the ends of the, branches tips
or whatever are dead totally and you know. It you
can see, it because like right, Now i'm starting to
get emails from folks that may have an arbor vite
that's got two tips that are. Dead may have happened
(04:02):
to the last. Fall it may have happened to a
little bit of snow or ice cause it to bend
and turn. Brown most of it is from last. Fall
but just to tip, here tip, there one piece, there
prune them, out get rid of. It so as you're walking,
around cut those out of. There take a snipper and
cut them out and toss them back underneath the planet
if you don't want to carry it around with, You
but cut that out of there and get rid of the.
(04:24):
Brown the definite brown branches that you've got in your,
evergreens if you see it here and. There AND i
do this for two. Reasons one is so you don't
see it. Anymore and secondly is that if there is
something wrong with the, evergreen you'll continue to get more.
Browning and then you see, that and now we know
(04:45):
we've got an. Issue but, otherwise if you prune it
out and the plant looks, okay and it's coming out
of the, winter and they always lose their, color you,
know boxwood looks. Bronzy, boy HAVE i seen a lot
of boxwood pictures where folks prune them shear the late
in the summer and they shot out new growth because
of that warm, fall and that new growth just turn.
(05:07):
BEIGE i mean it just lost. It and that. Happens
you get that new, growth it's real, fleshy it gets,
cold it's. Gone And i've seen a lot of that
which is gonna have to be clipped off, obviously but you,
know just walking around seeing that and clipping us out of,
there realizing the colors are going to come back to
us as the temperature start to warm, again and then
(05:28):
watch and see what happens and take. Note AND i
think that's that's one of the things as far As
i'm concerned that you can be doing this weekend to
start getting involved and again getting your plans. Together and
if on that, list you look at that and you,
say you, KNOW i really would like to screen that
off over.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
THERE i really think.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
We need another shade tree right, here because it patio
was awfully hot last. Year and let's try to get
us some tree started.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Here.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
SCREENING i need to let's redo. That you, know look
at the curb appeal of the. House how's the curb
appeal look looking? Good you, know the plant thing around
the front, door how's that Looking we have some color
here and. There where can we have some containers making
those kind of, notes and where CAN i start adding
some pollinator plants and native selections or native plants things like,
that making those kind of notes so that as we
(06:15):
get into the planting, season you know what you're looking,
for and, again make a, chart write it.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Down have two.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Lists things you know you got to get, done you
know you got to do, it and things you want
to get. Done and if you are, looking by chance
listening to our show and you're, saying, Boy i'd like
to get that new screen planting along the west side
of our property or whatever the, bigger bigger trees, planted you,
know or you had to get clumbus trees out or
somebody out with the bigger trees and plant some trees for,
(06:42):
you you, know get your name in the pot right,
now because if you don't in another couple of weeks
and the weather starts to really warm and everybody's thinking,
spring guess what you call. Them at that, point they
are already going to be two or three weeks backed
up to have a designer or a consultant come to,
you and then you've got a cuple weeks for the
design you got a couple of, weeks three, weeks four,
weeks you're Into june before you get anything. Done so
(07:07):
get your name on the list or in the. Pot
if you're needing some professional landscape, design landscape, installation, trees,
planet whatever it may, be get your name in the pot. Now, also,
lawnmower get the lawnmower. Service get the plays. Sharpened now
you know what's gonna happen in about maybe next week's,
(07:28):
show but the following show for. Sure you know What
i'm gonna. Say if the weather sticks with, Us i'm
gonna start talking about that Pre.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Mo you know me and The. PRIMO i love doing.
That what is The?
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Primo, well we're going to take a. Break phone lines
are open for you at eight two to one wtv
And i'll talk about The primo and taking your calls
here on news radio six TEN.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Wtvn we are.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Talking you are in here on news radio six' TEN
wtvn a two TO. One wtvn had someone call in
during the break wanted to Know When's buggy joe. COMING
back i know you All Love. Buggy joe we'll. Getting
back It's In buggy. Joe's Hands buggy joe's welcome to
be on our show every week If buggy joe, wants
to but HE he i talked, to him as a matter,
(08:18):
OF fact i don't KNOW if i said this. Last
week about ten, DAYS ago i see him off. And
on we email back, and forth and he sounded kind
of anxious about getting, back on so we might we
might see him by the end of. THIS month i
would guess the end of, the month First, of april,
for sure but he kind of Waits to we're into
the season a, little, bit uh and then he's always
(08:39):
got something to, talk about, you know if you if
you've ever been Somewhere where, joe is he's got a
lot to. Talk ABOUT but i know it's fun having
him on. The SHOW so i would guess in a couple,
more weeks maybe we'll Finally get joe back on. Here
AGAIN and i kind of PRESSURE when i get folks
that call in and ASK about, I, said joe you
know all your fans are looking, For you so. We'll
see but hopefully by the End. Of march First of
(09:00):
april typically is back on with us talking about YARDENING
and i was talking about that primo as the weather starts,
to change it starts, to warm sole temperatures starting to. Come,
on now do you know what soil? Temps are by,
the way did you look? This MORNING as i looked
this morning about, six o'clock the average soil temperatures Around
(09:20):
the columbus area thirty. Nine degrees thirty nine degrees over
the last twenty, four hours averaged out about forty two
the past five days and averaged out at about thirty.
Seven DEGREES so i actually dropped down a little bit
from last week obviously with the. Cooler temperatures but it'll
start moving back up and again you start getting into
(09:41):
the forty five and fifty degree, range consistently, and man
you're going to see that the lawn start to, green
up come. Along quicker and, of course as the soil
temperatures will, come up and the air temperatures obviously. Will
too when they start hitting at, fifty degrees everything starts.
Breaking loose so you just. Watch it when they come together,
like that it gets but as the grass starts to
(10:02):
green up more, and more and we're going to start
to see. That here i've always been one and it's
amazing folks do this and then they come back and.
SAY Them, I god i can't. BELIEVE it i call it.
A primo you premo the lawn before it's time to
actually start, mowing it maybe a couple three weeks before
you actually started getting into your. Mowing routine the primo and,
(10:25):
to me and it. Does work, you know when you
come out of the, winter time most of the grass
has the brown tinge on the top, that's natural starts
to green up down below and eventually those, go away
but it starts to green up. Down below but looking
at but you go out and you mow that grass
for the first time and you knock all of that
(10:45):
brown stuff off, of there and the mower helps to
pick up those, grass blades bring, them up stand them
up a little, bit more air it out a, little
bit pick up the breedest, down deep, you know and
you throw that back into. The lawn, it's good put
an organ matter back into. The lawn but you, mow
it and chances are you may not mow it again
another week or ten days or, two weeks and then
(11:06):
you finally start getting in. The routine but you, do
that and when, you're done if your neighbors haven't, done
it your your yard is so much greener than everybody.
Else is because one is you just knock the brown
tips off of those grass blades and you make it.
Stand up and then once you, do that it just,
comes on it starts, to green it'll start to grow
(11:27):
a little. Bit quicker it's IT'S a i. Like it
it's CALLED a i call it a primo for a
primo or a. Premiere lawn and it. Does Work and
i'm sure we're going to be talking about that here
In another i'm guessed in another ten days, or, so
uh we may be looking to. Do that so get that,
lawnmower service get those, new blades those, blades, sharpened uh
(11:50):
and then promise yourself that you'll do that at least
two more times. This year two. More times you'll sharpen
it going into the. Spring season you'll sharpen them again
going into the, summer season and you'll sharpen them again
going into the. Fall season if you, do that your
lawn will be one happy camper because that sharp and
(12:12):
more blade is so important and it really does keeps your.
Lawn greener you don't get that brown because it'll if
it rips the grass blades off and you, can look
they'll turn brown or a long neat tips and it
kind of picks up that brown tip tip tens and
you don't. Want that also can set you up for
disease issues, as well stresses the lawn a. Little bit
so promise yourself this year you'll mow it on a
(12:33):
little bit, higher level at least two and a, half
inches maybe three maybe three and.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
A half you'll bow.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
On a consistent basis, as needed not when you, can
mow Not, every saturday but. As needed and now you'll
get that blade sharpened three times through the. Mowing season
you do that just doing, that alone those, Cultural practices
it's amazing what that does to keep your lawn. LOOKING
good a two TO one Wtv In jes, Good.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Morning, Good morning Hyi, YOU ron i am great. In Yourself, good.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Hey this is a. Great Segue so i've taken your
advice in. YEARS past i have moode in in the,
springtime early just as, you suggestive, pre mode and then. Set,
it however what it did last FALL was i had
the yard auriated AND then i seed it in. The fall,
(13:25):
of course nothing came up or even tried to grow
because there was.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
No, rain YEAH do i.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Have to receive this moment spring or will those grass
seats germinate and.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Pop up you'll still, you know you'll have some grass
seed that will be lost during that period. Of time
there's no doubt you'll have a lot of grass seed
that'll still. Come up so, you know, PERCENTAGE wise i
couldn't tell, you that but you will have grass that will.
Come up and, you know dormant seating can. Start anytime
First in november where the grass just doesn't, Come up
(13:57):
so there are some folks that will Dormant, seed november
so You, Get, November, December, january february so you know it.
DOES happen i always like waiting until closer to the,
spring season like right, you know mid To, late february even,
right now because just because you're a little bit closer
to the timing and you have less, seed loss but
you're still going to have it. Come up there'll be
(14:18):
some of it, in there not all, of IT but
i think you'd be surprised how much should come up
that just stayed there dormant over the over the.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Winter time.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Can you you can't? See it did you slice seed
it or did you just do? A BROADCAST just.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
I did a broadcast. After aeriation so, that's, yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
That's good that's. That's perfect then, you know it works
its way into the soil and sits there and waits. For, you,
so yep you're gonna lose a. Little bit. You know
sometimes folks will come in and knowing that, that happened and.
Overseed again but use it at about a fourth of the,
regular rate, you know, really light just to help out a.
Little bit don't overseed it because then if you were
(14:59):
lucky and you do get all of it to come,
back up that would not be a. Good thing so,
you know, Some, folks yeah so if you do it,
at all it would be, you know, a fourth it's
ten pounds per thousand. Square feet i'd be doing, two
pounds just add a little bit more just to BE
sure i.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Don't overseed, got it? All right?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Thank?
Speaker 2 (15:21):
You ron, All, right jess good talking. To you appreciate,
The call appreciate you listening to. Our show and, of
course if you are doing, some seeding don't forget pre.
Emmergion herbicides they will stop that grass seed from coming
up if you dorm, it seated if you seed it
in the fall and it didn't come up and you
have a lawn, care service let them not you, did
that because what they put down will stop that grass
(15:42):
seed from. COMING up a there is a product on
The Market scott step one for newly. Seated lawns i'm
not sure that all the garden centers, have it.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
But a lot of. Them do.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
But the pre emergent that's used in that, PARTICULAR product
i think it's the same chemical, it's in but it
will allow the grass seed to, come up and it's
at a very, low percentage so it will LAST only
i think it's forty five to fifty days something, like
that but it gives you time for the grass seed to,
come up holding back the other, weed seeds so that
(16:14):
once the grass seed is up and germinated, and growing
you will at least once. Or so then you could
come back and put down a regular pre. Emergent orbicide
but you've got to remember that you know your, pre
emergence all the other ones will stop grass seed, from
growing so make sure you don't. Use that If you
if you have a couple, bare areas couple spots that
(16:35):
you specifically seeded overseeded that are distinct areas that.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
In your within.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Your lawn you could put down a, pre emergent drop it,
straight down make sure it doesn't get into. Those areas
but you could put a pre emergent and go around
those areas and still do the regular pre emergent in
your existing lawn where you did, not seed so that.
Is possible or you just Get the scotch step one
for newly seed of, the lawns and then you just
have to come back and add one a little bit
(17:03):
later on in the season to carry you through the
spring and into through the summer season. As well if
you look at the fertil, on product the first one
is the all seasons with has the pre emergent plus
the lawn feeding with iron.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
In it that is.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Pro Diamine pro diamine is one of those pre emergent
oversides that lasts easily Four weeks may or, four months.
Maybe five so if you put that down and we
kind of hold off we're watching these, soil temperatures we
don't have to do that till the End of april Or.
In march First, Of, April, April, May, June. July august
it carries you through the entire summer for the, most
part depending on, the weather how much rainfall, we get
(17:42):
sign and, all that but it'll carry you pretty much
through the summer season with the. Pre emergent one, last
thing we'll take a break here and we'll take your
calls at eight two TO. One wtvn if you feel
that the lawn is, looking good you fed it twice in,
the fall everything looks. Punky dory you don't feel like
you need to feed it right off the bat as
(18:02):
we get into the, spring season but you'd like to
use a. Pre emergent remember there are pre emergents available
without the, fertilizer attached one of which Is. Called dimension
dimension does a great job of a pre emergent in.
The lawn but the thing is Cool, about dimension which
you have to read the bag to make sure with
(18:23):
all the, other ones is that you Could use dimension
also in the. Landscape beds many of them are lawn
specific or bed specific or vegetable, garden Specific but dimension
is available and can be used in both the lawn
and the, landscape beds not in the, vegetable garden but
in the. Landscape beds corn, gluten meal if you're going,
(18:43):
all organic doesn't do quite the job as the other.
Pre emergence but that can be used in anything, the, lawn,
vegetable garden the, landscape beds. Even groundcover and that's corn.
Gluten meal eight two to ONE, wtv in eight hundred
and six TO ten wtvn talking your yardening here On
news radio SIX. Ten wtvn would you like to learn
(19:04):
more about growing dahlias maybe in your yard and garden
and your containers. Or whatever i'll tell you. What dahalias
there are so many different types that, available today, huge flowers, small, flowers,
tall short all. Different colors and you know there's you
got the Day The dhalia society. AS well i mean
(19:26):
that shows You where dalia's, fallen there, you know as far,
as plants so pretty pretty unique and very wonderful plants
and actually not too bad. To grow but if you'd
like to learn more, about it learn more, about Dahlias
The Greater Columbus dahlia society is inviting you to their.
General meeting it's tomorrow from two and till four At
The Enniswood metro Gardens. In westerville it's At The sisters
(19:49):
house and again it's. Absolutely free two. To four you
learn about all kinds. Of dahlias how, they did how
to get them started in, the springtime how to take care,
of them how to over some of them you have.
To overwinter, but yeah they'll go over that, With You,
linda lane, her husband all the whole, group, There uh
and it could be a lot of fun. For you to,
(20:10):
learn more you can go to Their Website columbus dalias
Dot Com columbus dalias. Dot com, but again It's The
Greater Columbus. Dalia society it's their. General meeting the topic
how to grow dahally is, absolutely free open to The
Public Inneswood metro Gardens in westerville And The sister's house
tomorrow from two. Until, four rick, good morning.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Nice today.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Out, there, yes, SIR.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
Uh i know you talked quite a lot of you
know about about pollinators and. NATIVE species i was wondering
about your thoughts about ONE that i see growing way
back at the back corner of the Lot where. I'M
at i didn't know what, it was but it's, really
fragrant lots of blooms in the spring and actually ended up.
(21:01):
Having FRUIT and i didn't know what, it was but
it turns out the native, plumb yes and how. IT
grow i MEAN because, i never, you KNOW because i
need to talk about native species, a lot and this
thing obviously just showed, Up, essentially yeah, go uh just
want to leondered about your thoughts about actually, incorporating it,
you know.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
On.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Purpose absolutely as a matter, Of Fact Franklin county Soil
and water has their their plant sale and they have
that in their, plant SALE and i personally Was not
i've never, grown one not that familiar, with IT and
i had to learn more about it because they had
it in their. Plant sale but that is SOMETHING that
i would like to try to push more to see
(21:41):
if other nurseries can start to grow that and have
that a little bit more available because, you're right, very fragrant,
the flower, nice flower and then of course you got
the fruit.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
As well, and yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
It's outstanding so they actually selected that as part of
their native plant program and their. Plant SALE and i
don't Remember if corey said they were still had some left,
or not but that was the FIRST time i really
was had my attention drawn to. That plant i've never
grown up myself and my, own PROPERTY but i WILL and.
I don't i, don't know and after Talking to corey about,
(22:13):
THIS before i don't remember ever seeing, one anywhere but
it is native to the State, Of ohio, SO yeah i.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
LIKE it i think it.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
LOOKS great i think we're going to look to try
to see how we can get that one more incorporated
into garden centers and nurses for growing to use as
another selection of native plants for. Our area absolutely along.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Those lines the REASON how i, IDENTIFIED it i actually
took pictures and sent it to another GARDENER and i
she's been on your Show Before, Gardens, age yes AND
so i just since You've Mentioned buggy joe and people
were asking. About HIM but I think i emailed her
with pictures of that and she helped me. Identify it
(22:55):
and then she actually said that she'd be, you know
she had been on your.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Show before dever connecty, Want, exactly yeah oh Absolutely, she
yeah she knows. Their stuff as a matter, Of fact
deborah work together to help put together we, you know
they have Now declared April Is Ohio Native Plant, awareness
month and it's the program they have in their websites
(23:18):
outstanding and she is one that helped to put the
list together that's on that website as far as native
plans to use for.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
The area, so.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Yeah she's she does a great job in your ear absolutely,
all right, Appreciate, it rick, take care, all right, Well,
BYE yeah i. Love it and you, Know, again Yeah
she's SHE and I And. ROGER seely i think sat
in on a At The Home guarden show about four
(23:49):
or five, years ago RIGHT BEFORE covid i think it was,
uh set and had. A panel we were the panel.
Over there we were the three, up there three totally
different folks in this. Green industry what we're doing on
it was a lot. Of fun, But yeah I've known
deborah for a long. Long time, all right quick. Bick
break we come back coming up to the top of.
The hour by, the way we're going to talk about
(24:09):
we don't talk about houseplants all that much on.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
OUR show i mean, we do but not all.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
The time but found A book i thought was kind
of interesting because as folks are really getting involved with
more and, more houseplants becoming plant parents and all. OF
that i found a book just recently released about prop.
Houseplant PROPAGATION and i get questions every now and then
about you know that twenty year old rosina that's gotten
(24:34):
too tall and you know it's hitting. The ceiling you
know WHAT can. I do i don't want to give.
It away we've had. It forever, you know where you
can actually air layer and propagate it and reduce the
size and start new ones or start babies from some
of your small owners that you have there that you
can give away to people or hand out or give
to schools for kids to use. Or whatever just. Propagating
houseplants and, you know it's can be fairly easy if
(24:57):
you know what you're doing and know which ones can
be proper. Which, CAN'T well i found this Plant of
the book Is Called The ultimate guide The House, plant
propagation and it truly is a step by step. Instruction book,
really cool great pictures on how to propagate houseplants and
uh it's Written By, lindsay Sisty and lindsay is going
to join us at the top of the hour talk
(25:19):
about this book and we'll talk about propagating, indoor PLANTS
which i think is pretty. Dark cool it's all happening
here in the Garden With ron wilson on news radio SIX.'. Ten,
wtvn john yes we, Got, You, Now.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Hey ron i've. GOT some stuff i got a, bunch
of its seventeen. Bunches of it called lily ROPIE is
that i don't know about the way, you pronounce it
kind of a weird ll iob or. Something, like that yep.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
That's close Enough.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
Hey it's. Charle turned yellow go ahead and cut it
back all.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
The, way down yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
It's IT'S it's when I Went to ohio state's fun
it was a it WAS leiope when I Went, to
ohio state and. Now IT'S LORIOPE, SO i, sa i,
say either way, you're close enough doesn't. Matter to me
but as we know what. We're talking, about but yeah,
there's a white there's a variegated. White and green, there's
a green and then there's a golden, variegated as well and.
(26:17):
Uses a groundcover great, in the shade but in the
winter and, it's an evergreen but in the winter time
it looks. Like a grass it just kind, of flattens
out starts. To turn brown so we, clear that off
just like clearing. Off ornamental grasses you know about an
inch above the top. Of the ground just just go
through and clip. All those off if you Never did
anything john and just left, those lay there the new growth.
(26:39):
Does come up as a, MATTER of fact i experimented
with myn loriopy in a planter, bed LAST year and
i didn't cut any. OF it off i left it
just lay there and let, it come up and it
was amazing how easily the rest of the stuff just
turned brown, kind OF disappeared and. I did wound i'm
not pulling any dead. Foliage off now it was kind
of unusual because we usually go through and clip. It
(27:00):
all off so if you want a cleaner, look quicker
yet THEN just, like i say just sometimes you just
pull it up like a, clump of whatever just snip
it off and that's, good.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
To go and then you know they'll.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
COME back up i have found with loriope or learry
ope that when you if you do that a little
bit closer to where you start to see it come
up out of the center, of the plant they seem
to respond a little bit better rather than doing. It
too early so Point being is johnny got plenty of time.
To do it just keep watching them and do it
before the new growth starts to come out from the
(27:34):
center or it just starts. To pop up make sure
you're done, at that, point because otherwise if you prune
the new growth, that comes up it'll still it'll have,
that cut look that flat cut look on the.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Ends of the of the.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Of the, foliage but yeah sometimes also called monkey grass as,
a common, Name but uh i've always kind. Of contested,
THAT but anyway i loriope, or lear reope. It doesn't,
MATTER great stuff.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
I love, It, thank you, Ron.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
All right john good.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Talking to you that, is a grass, not a grass
but that is an ornamental groundcover that looks like a grass,
gets you know depending on the selection, that you have
get anywhere from twelve to fifteen, inches high foliage variegated,
and green leafed purple flour, in the summertime pollinators go to.
It fairly well, but you know just if you've got
(28:22):
an area that's shaded and you're looking for this grassy type,
Of a groundcover loriope is l. I ri iope loriope
is a great one to use to let it, just mass,
plant you know let it. Just grow together you'll see
it planted in. The traffic islands it. Is so tough
they do. Very well there let. Them go together and
then what they'll do is usually late late winter they'll
(28:44):
go in there with a string trimmer and just string trim.
It all down rake all that stuff out of there
and let it come. Back UP again but, i LOVE
loriope and i think it's it's underused in some tough
conditions that it will take and it'll. Take the sun
keep some, moisture to it it'll. Take the sun you've
got a situation where between a sidewalk and the house
(29:06):
and it's only, eighteen inches wide and you just like
something in there that would just kind, of fill in
stay under a foot tall or so FILL in and
i don't have to do a whole. Lot to it
the riopy is a great. Choice for that and you've got,
the nice foliage the nice, soft you know so if
it touches the sidewalk a little bit, you touch it.
It's very soft when you walk by the bluish purple flowers,
(29:28):
that come up that will. Attrack some, pollinators AND then,
like i say the maintenance issue is cleaning off the
old foliage at the end of the season or beginning of,
the spring, season either way and then getting it to.
Flush back up that's the only thing you really have.
To DEAL with but i was kind of lazy this
past year in one, of THE beds and i just
let It go because i've always clipped, it all off
(29:49):
and once, it came up it started to kind. Of fill,
OUT next thing i knew most of the dead foliage
underneath had pretty well either blown away or just kind
of worked. Into THE mulch and i picked a few things,
out here there but that. Was about it so you
can do. It EITHER way but. I like that i
like that plants can be can, be somewhat aggressive aggressive
if it likes the area, that it's in but it'll
(30:09):
fill that bit very very nicely for you and give.
You That look and i'll tell you another one that
gives you the same look that you could also use in. That,
small section again we'll tolerate some shade or. Some either way,
are the sedges and there are so many great varieties
of sedges available now. On the market and you talk
about even tougher, and more durable and the.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Sedges truly are.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
More ever green you clean them up, a little bit
kind of hand cleaning them up, in the springtime but, they. Are,
tough durable again the perfect plant for under that tree
where you know you've got the raised roots and you
know you want, to you know hit them with you
don't want to hit up with the. Lawn moore anymore
so you get rid. Of the grass that's a great
great place for loriope or for the sedges in that
(30:56):
narrow spot where you have a little, bit more contained
the great spot for the riper the. Sedges as, well
but again lots of new selections of sedges coming along
that do. An outstanding job you'll see it when containers use,
as filler, plants you, know mixed containers all. Kinds of
things so keep when you go to your, local garden
center check out the riopy l i, r i ope
(31:18):
but also look. At the sedges some of them look
fairly similar, to each other but once you start looking
at the, two of them you'll realize you notice the differences.
Between the two, BUT both both i really like do a.
Very nice job in. The groundcover situation, talking about yarding
talking about your walking, around your yard making your lists
(31:39):
what you need to get done because, of the timing
and of course springtime can be tough because you got
two days, of great weather one, day of rain one,
day of cold two days nice. Blah blah blah so
you have your plans in place of what you can
do when. It's not raining the days that it is
good days that you can get out. And actually work
if you, need landscape installation make sure you get your name.
In the pot you need, a bigger tree like We're Talking.
(32:01):
About columbus trees and, by the way we're going to
be out there on the Weekend. OF ourbor day i
think that's the twenty Six, Is that saturday, april twenty
sixth Will Be. At columbus trees if you want to
see what they look like with the big, trees and
all come out and. Check us out but we'll. Be,
OUT there yeah I think it's i don't have my
cheating in Front of me, april Twenty sixth if, I'm
(32:22):
not mistaken so come out and check. Us out, there
but again, the bigger, trees screen plannings. Whatever may be
get your name in the pot now so that when
they are, ready to plant they can get out there
and get you taken care. Of right away very. Very
very important also if you're looking at your beds RIGHT
now and i get getting a lot of questions, already
(32:42):
ABOUT this and i want to freshen, up the mulch
when is the best time To ADD molt because i
see landscape firms out there putting. MALTS down now i hear,
OTHER people saying i don't put it down. N till
later is there better timing for applying malt. To the
landscape later to me is. Better than early but you
can still get by doing it in a general landscape
(33:04):
bed around trees and all this time of the. YEAR
if necessary i personally like to just fluff up the,
mault right now, clean it out get, the debris out
let everything ride until we get into the spring season
the soils start to warm up, a little bit got
most of your planning and redone, and all that and
then come back in and do a mid to late
(33:25):
spring mulching as we start to look at the. Summer
season horticulturally that's actually the best way, to do it
but it can be done earlier if. Absolutely need it
but fluff the mulch up first before you add. Molt
to it never go more than, three inches deep and
don't put it up against the trunk of trees or
the shrubs that you're putting. That mulch, around and remember when,
(33:47):
you're buying mulch and you're buying, you know whatever make
sure you check the quality of. Mulch as, well quick right.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
We come back.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
We come back we'll Talk With our lindsay systeve With
