Speaker 1 (00:12):
Hey guys, I hope you guys are doing well.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Den Bra.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Why do you have to say that?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Now I'm picturing a thirty year old Jack Bradshaw.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Thanks by Mo.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
You naughty, naughty boy. See what you started? Jack Radshaw?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Where did I start?
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Welcome back because I was thirty one exactly, you're thirty
five now, Yeah, I know years ago.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Don't hate him because he's beautiful.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Welcome back to the Jim Colbert Show on Real Radio
one oh four point one. As you can hear, Jim
is off today. He'll be back with us on Monday.
You've got deb Jack our special guest co host today,
Tom Sorels.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Thank you so much Tom for joining us. We really do.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
I love it here. I know well, we love you
coming over here because you helped make it that much
more fun. And what we're gonna do now is we're
gonna bring you one of those really great feel good
stories that hit just a little extra special this time
of the year. But you know, teachers, right, so much
as askeda teachers, In fact, it seems like more and
more and more as asked the teachers, And then you
(01:10):
have some teachers who answer that call and are able
to go above and beyond. So gentlemen, please join me
and welcoming. Megan DeWitt's a teacher at Triangle Elementary School
in Mount Dora. Yay, Why Megan, how are you?
Speaker 5 (01:26):
I'm wonderful, how are you good?
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Good? Good?
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
I came across your story this morning on Fox thirty
five and as you know, immediately put a call into
the school and said, we need to talk to Megan
and find out how, of all things, your school wish
list was fulfilled by none other than Paris Hilton. How
did that happen?
Speaker 5 (01:47):
So? I am a second year teacher, and I created
a wish list right when I started teaching through Amazon
and all also donors choose, and I turned my classroom
into a home very very quickly, a safe space that
the students want to be at, and I race. I
(02:09):
teach at a Title I school, which means majority or
low income, and I provide daily snacks for my students
and I did that all year last year, and so
at the beginning of this year, we knew that we
had a high need because of a lot going on
in the world. And we feed our students over the weekend,
(02:32):
so we send food home for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
for children who need a little extra And sometimes we
have forty students and sometimes we have seventy. It can
range on the needs. And we were short on food.
Our school was short on food. So I said, I
can step up, and I think I can make this happen.
(02:53):
And so I added a lot of food items, non
perishable items that people could use that live in their cars,
live in hotels, that's easy to cook, easy to eat.
And Paris Hilton happened to see one of my tiktoks
and because that's what my TikTok page is devoted to,
is raising supplies for other teachers for my classroom. Just
(03:17):
wherever there's a need, I'm there to fill it. And
she saw one of my videos asking for food and
she purchased a ton of stuff from my list and
supplies a food and supplies, And I was just why me.
I'm just a teacher, I'm just a mom, I am
(03:37):
just like why me. I just felt so thrilled that
she saw that it caught her attention, and so we
filled our pantry. And then because she shared my post
on her social media page, it helps me get a
lot more followers. I was only at six thousand followers
(03:58):
on TikTok, and then I grew several thousand followers from her,
and then it just launched. Every since then, I've just
had viral after viral after viral video. One video had
three million follower views.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
I know, I would kill me those kinds of numbers,
Are you kidding? All I can think of is, oh,
how do I get those kinds of numbers? But Megan
real quick, before you know, Paris Hilton stepped up, and
of course her her fans and followers as well, a
lot of those snacks that was money that came out
of your pocket.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
Correct, No, So it was the community. It was people
from all over. So I was doing this from all
over the United States. And now it's reached the attention
of other countries too, So I've had some people donate
from Scotland, from Europe. So it's pretty incredible. And the
sky is the limit. And this mission was just put heavy, heavy,
(04:56):
heavy on my heart by God, and it's it's my mission,
That's what I call it.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Well, I love the tagline your text message today that
said full belly's full hearts, which really is true. Right
when children don't motto yeah, because when children don't have
to worry about being hungry in the classroom, they're ready
to learn.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
So I say love first, then academics come. They have
to feel safe, they have to feel half full bellies.
They can't learn on empty tummies.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah that's true, Jackie. What we're going to say.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yeah, we have Megan's story posted on our website Real
Radio dot FM slash wish and you can go there
get caught up on the story. But there's also a
link to your wish list. Now, this is awesome what
Paris Hilton did, Bravo to her, and it fills the
pantry one time. But unfortunately this is an ongoing situation
(05:46):
in our communities. And so what do you need moving forward, Megan,
Because I know your wish list is still there.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
So in addition to the food that's going to be
forever until there's not a need forever, will do this,
but we are also putting gifts under the Christmas tree
for children who will not have anything. And so far
in the last few weeks we've been able to help.
I don't even know. I have to get my book.
It's just been like a whey teaching, being a mom
(06:16):
and doing this. We have five schools lined up every
day at my home. We work out of my garage,
so we need toys and we need food. So anything
on that list is a need. And I tried to
put a no under each item what it will be
used for. And I have so many schools on the
(06:37):
maybe list because we're just running out. As soon as
the food comes in, the toys come in, it goes
right back out.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Well, it's amazing from what I read.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Not only have you been able to help the students
at your school. We're talking to teacher Megan Dewitch. She
teaches at Triangle Elementary School in Mount Dora, but I
read you were also able to help other schools in
Orange County. Was it Seminal County as well?
Speaker 5 (06:59):
Yeah? Any I'm just saying spread the word. I'll help
whoever I can help, and I'm going to my husband
helps me, my children help me. We've been working until
ten twelve o'clock at night. Wow, And I just keep
telling myself, let's just do this until schools out, help
as many children as we can, and then I will
rest and then we'll get back at it after the
(07:20):
new year.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Well, I don't know about that because it also what
I read, is it true you're going to be starting
a nonprofit organization because of all of this generosity?
Speaker 5 (07:28):
Yes, so that is the goal is to turn it
into a nonprofit after the holidays. I'm really excited about this.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Well, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I think you're going to have some choices to make Megan.
It's either going to be a social media star teacher
nonprofit organizer. It seems like you already are wearing an
awful lot of hats.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
Well, teachers wear many hats.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yes they do, Yes, they do, Yes they do.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
What's been the reaction of the students that you've been
helping in their families? Do you see relief on their
faces that they probably just they just weren't expecting this.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
Yes, I've had students tell me that I love like Jesus.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
I have had students specifically ask me for certain types
of shoes. I've had students just say why do you
do this, teacher? And why do you do this? Teacher? Right?
And my response is because I love you and strangers
love you.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Oh, those are the best words that especially a child
who between food and security watching their parents struggle. You know,
I was I'm the product of a single mother myself,
and those times that you know they the parents don't
think their children notice the stress, the worry. The truth
of matter is they do very much, so notice. And
(08:45):
there's an extras kind of a weird sense of guilt
as a child because you know your parent is working
that hard to take care of you, but you're too
young to do anything to contribute outside of loading the
dishwasher and doing it correctly. But I did want to
ask what has been your children's reaction to this, because,
of course, when when their needs are met right, it's
it can be it can become easy to become selfish
(09:08):
and think about what you want at this time of
the year. What has it been like for them to
see others who don't have much get something and being
my own children, yes, your own children.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
So my husband and myself grew up that life. We
grew up very.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Very humbly, you know, we grew up that life.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
So this is why it's I think especially near and
dear to our hearts, and my children know about our
lives and they are very compassionate and empathetic, and even
as a couple of years ago I went through a
we went through a hard time as a family. I
lost my small business and I had to go back
to school and I didn't have a job, and it
(09:48):
was really hard for us. And so they know that
life too for a short time a little bit. But
I've I've always taught them about g and loving and
so to them it's natural.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
And they get so much more, they get so much
more back. How old are your kids?
Speaker 1 (10:07):
How old are they?
Speaker 5 (10:09):
They just both turned eleven and thirteen?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Wow? Oh wow? Fourth fifth grade?
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Wow, fifth and seventh And congratulations on having a teenager.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Now, yeah, I think she's eighteen. I don't know's yeah,
you know you're in for it more than you know.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
She definitely thinks she's eighteen.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
So again, Jack, where can where can folks go to
see that entire list? And if you're watching us on
our YouTube channel right now, Jack has some of the
items that are up.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
This is the list. So this is how it works.
You go to Real Radio, dot FM, slash Wish. It's
going to have a little article about the story and
there is a link to Megan's wish list that goes
to Amazon. Now, when you order any of these items
on Amazon, you pay for it, but it automatically will
be delivered to your location, right, Megan, Yes, it.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
Comes right to our home. We work out of our
garage flea. One day we'll have a warehouse, but for
now it's out of our garage.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
So I'm looking at items.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
There are toy items that would represent Christmas gifts, but
there's also things like cereal and snacks because that need
for food is always there.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Correct, our students are going to be out of school
for fourteen days. That's fourteen breakfasts, lunch, and dinners they
may not have.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
And that's something that as we go into the holiday season,
I know just breaks everyone's heart, right that a child
needs to go to school just to make sure that
not only they get an education, but that they get
a meal that they can count on. Well, if there's
one thing I can tell you, Megan, is that we
have the best listeners in all of radio. So I
can promise you that they are going to be coming
through for you with flying colors.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
And not only that, the Jim Colbert Show here is
going to send you about one hundred dollars or the
food items on your list.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Yay, that's awesome, that is awesome.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
I'm usual together are going to make me cry because
this is just I cry all the time because has
been blessing after blessing after blessing, and it's just we're
changing so many lives.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
You some people say, oh, my one item helps. Yes,
your one item is feeling a heart or it's feeling
their tummy exactly.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
And but I did want to make sure you are
aware of this, Megan, that Jack was Jack, that's not
coming out of your wall.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
No, No, I am gonna use I'm using my company
card for this.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
There we go, that we listen before we go. Hey,
as long as we get the items right.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
No, And also I don't care where it comes from.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
I like this fidget toy set.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Oh yeah, there's yes, I gotta I gotta throw some
toys in there because it's the holidays. Yes, the need
is food and that is powamount. However, you gotta get
some toys in there too.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
You know what, I think all three of us should
should you know? So Jack, you go ahead and use
your company thing and we'll throw in some stuff too,
right Tom So absolutely, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Kids are my favorite thing. Kids and old people love them,
love them.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Level You're like, why I pin them to the wall
on that that been better?
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Than putting someone on the spot on me and we've
got your back girl.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
You're old Tom.
Speaker 5 (13:06):
It's been a little pressed out because last minute there's
so many schools we need help, we need help, and
I just want to help as many as I can,
even though we've already helped. I want to say, over
sixteen different schools. It's not enough. I need. I want
to help everybody.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
So well, when you love like Jesus, you get blessed, right,
and that's the thing. And I before we go, I
really want to thank you because you really are a
credit to the to the profession of teacher, because once
again you go, you show that more often than not,
our teachers go above and beyond what they're just expected
to do in the classroom when it comes to teaching
young minds, but becoming a full human being involves so
(13:44):
much more than that. So kudos to you for being
such a fantastic example to your own children, but especially
to your students, because that's all those little minds and
hearts that are going to go out into the world
and hopefully follow in your footsteps.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
You're welcome. Tom going to say something, Oh no, I
just love.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
You so much.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
And I didn't even know about this story until I
got here today, and it's it's it's made it Christmas
for me.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
It is awesome. Yay.
Speaker 5 (14:10):
That goal was like Christmas is about and.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Yeah, what's really cool is because and I was yesterday
just said Jim asked, are you in the Christmas spirit?
And my three grown up daughters there's a I think
they'll all be out of town on Christmas. Oh no,
but this is something you can do that definitely trigger
the Christmas spirit.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Since Meghan, please keep us posted, especially in the new year.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
We would love to have you back.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
We would love to hear what your progress is, and
more importantly, we would really like to help you reach
those goals and be able to get you your own
building and maybe move operations out of your garage.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Thank you, I say, growth with my social media means
more children we can help. And I'm just so thankful
for this community. There's so much more good in the
world than there is bad.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Yes, there is.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
And Meghan, what again, what are your social media handles?
What's your TikTok handle?
Speaker 5 (15:02):
It's called squirrel around the world, and mostly it's TikTok
that I post. But I'm also on Facebook and Instagram,
but TikTok is where I always go first.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Squirrel around the World.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
I love that, all right, Squirrel around the world.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Megan, thank you again for carving some time out of
your day to day and sharing your story. We can't
wait to see how much the listeners come through for us.
God bless Merry Christmas in a happy New Year. Merry Christmas,
Merry Christmas. Yay Meghan Dewits, Tryangle Elementary School, go to
real Radio, dot FM, slash wish to see her list
and then just like Jack, add your name to it
(15:39):
and buy some items and let's make this happen.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
People come through community for community.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
And if you can use your company card absolutely.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Hey, how could the company be upset?
Speaker 5 (15:48):
Right?
Speaker 3 (15:48):
You're just you're putting more good out into the world.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
She just gave us twenty minutes of content.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
We certainly do and I pray I can get some
of those social media numbers.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Thank you, Megan. Hopefully we'll talk to you.
Speaker 5 (16:00):
I forget you.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Oh, we won't forget you either, and thank you for
the work that you're doing. All right, Well, you got it. Absolutely,
what a great story to come across. I'm so happy
we were able.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
To talk to her today.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
You found it, yeah, job, Well, as soon as I
saw it, I was like, this is an interview that
has to happen.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, and you never know how someone's going to do
in an interview.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
Right.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Oh she killed?
Speaker 3 (16:17):
I know, I know she was nervous, but I like,
don't worry.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
This is going to be a fun conversation with friends
and it will go buy faster than you think you
so again, please if you have it, doesn't Like she said,
even one item is an item that's going to help
one of these children in need for so many schools.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
You can get a box of ciro for less than
five dollars delivered to her garage.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
You can't even get that at the grocery store.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Yeah, so do that again. Real Radio Dot FM, slash Wish. Okay,
we're going to take a little break. When we come back.
Maybe we may just have a solution for those who
have an aggressive dog and just don't know what to do.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Well, a new study came out with maybe an option.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
We'll talk about that next, So keep it here on
the Jim Culbert Show on Real Radio one O four
point one
