Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jumping on the line with us right now to talk
a couple of big stories. Matt Hall, Speaker of the
House here in Michigan, Republican speaker, and things are really well,
they're really on the move. Since you all have taken
over speaking but speaking, appreciate you taking the time. I
guess first let's start with Travers City because an absolutely terrifying,
it in very tragic situation playing out there this weekend.
(00:21):
We're praying for those folks there and and just so
grateful that somebody was there who was able to step
up and and uh and get in between the man
with the knife and the other victims.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
You're right, you know, you saw a responsible gun owner
step up and who's a lawful CPL holder and yeah,
and intervene and help bring this situation to a close
before it got a lot more dangerous. So very fortunate
he was there and acted acted the way he did.
(00:56):
And there were some other you know, by standers there
who helped step up as well. So it's a terrible
thing that happened, but thankfully some brave individuals help bring
it to an end. Quicker.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
It's so sad because look, I know we're going to
be dissecting this, and you know, people want to jump
in politically and make commentary. You're right out of the gate,
especially if it's a if it's an issue that involves
a firearm. There's a lot of times we'll see that
from the left, see this is why we need to
ban this, or we need to ban that. But one
thing I know they won't be talking about. And I
think it's interesting timing because I think it was Friday
(01:30):
or Thursday we learned at President Trump I had issued
in the actuative order to help folks who have mental
health issues who are homeless. We had learned that maybe
this individual had history of that. We're going to learn more.
I'm sure the days go on, but it's it's no
surprise mental health crisis in this country. It really, it
(01:51):
really is a problem, and we need to address that.
Until we actually see some of those things really being
addressed and get those people the help that they need,
you know, we're just going to continue to see issues
like this, whether it's a goune or a knife or anything.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, and that's right. You see President Trump taking action,
doing what he can do. And that's something we've looked
at too. With the Michigan legislature is why is our
mental health system so screwed up? And why do Democrats
focus all of their attention on banning guns and not
(02:27):
enough on solving the mental health crisis. So that's something
we've been looking at and we want to see. And
you know, in the schools, right we saw last year
Democrats eliminate school safety and mental health funding for schools.
That's something House Republicans are restoring because we need more
(02:50):
of it.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Speaker of the House here in Michigan, Republican. That hall
lots of other big things in thos a matter of fact,
making some news last week as well. Let's talk about
few of those things because obviously I don't think they
get the credit. You all get the credit you deserve,
one man, some of these big things that are happening
on the scenes.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, you know, we're trying to get a budget done.
Democrats are obstructing that. Before we won the election, Democrat
that if you elect a Republican House in Michigan, the
government will shut down. And essentially what they've been doing
ever since October of last year, before we won the election,
(03:32):
has been preparing for this government shutdown because they believe
It goes back to their old playbook in the nineties.
They believe that if they shut down the government and
blame the Republicans, it's going to help them win the election.
We're looking at this and saying, under Governor Whitmer, the
budget has increased forty three percent. That's astounding if you
(03:55):
think about it. And so we need to eliminate the waste, fraud,
and abuse. We need to set better priorities. You saw
Whipmer propose a corporate income tax increase this year. We
think she has enough money, but we need to help.
We want to help her fix the roads. We just
want to do it without raising taxes. And so what
(04:16):
we've said in this budget we need to do something
different Whimer, it's not used to. We need to set priorities,
and those priorities should be education, public safety, and finally
fixing our roads and doing it without raising taxes.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
You know, just imagine that. What a concept. Hey, let's
make use of the money that's there and let's do
you know what people aren't talking about that we had
a massive surplus not too long ago and we just
we blew through it. She was able to spend it
all and there's not much left over. But what there
is is a lot of fat still left in areas.
(04:56):
I know you've been taking a look at, especially with
this medc and the stories have been come out in
the you know, crazy five thousand dollars Coffeemaker or whatever
it was, spent twenty million dollars for this then and
the other thing. That's where this money's coming from.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
It sounds like, yeah, one hundreds of millions of dollars
going to the biggest, most connected corporations and donors in Michigan,
and we're not seeing one job created as a result
of these and so we're saying, let's just rededicate that
money to the road. Everybody wants better infrastructure, everybody wants
(05:33):
safer communities than everyone wants a good education system. So
that's where we're trying to direct the resources. You know,
I really applaud what President Trump has done with the
one Big Beautiful Bill, and our Congress members, we're seeing
them push back against the waste, fraud, and abuse and
the medicaid system that's thirty percent of our state budget,
(05:56):
and so putting in work requirements, education requirements, volunteer requirements
so that able bodied adults are not sitting on their
parents couch, but they're seeking work, volunteering or getting an
education so they can make a better life for themselves.
Is really going to help the federal land state budget.
(06:17):
And then finally let's get all the illegal aliens off
the welfare system. And the one big beautiful bill is
going to help us do that.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Speaker of the House here in Michigan, Matt Hall, with
the latest, anything else we should be looking for, I
know you guys are working hard, obviously to get this
road deal done. In some of these other things, these
big projects, you guys have done such a great job
with oversight. We hear lots of good news when it
comes to election integrity efforts, lots of good news when
(06:46):
it comes to the weaponization all of that stuff, and
in these other pieces. I think these are just some
highlights that people tell me about. But anything else we
should keep an eye on, and the horizon that you
want to make sure we highlight today, well, you're.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Right, we're working hard on oversight. That was something I
put in place as the new House Speaker, was giving
the Oversight Committee significance to poena power and telling them, hey,
go out and find out what's going on in government,
and so you see them now they're digging in into
this DNR abuse that's going on. We saw an article
(07:20):
today about how they did some undercover operations going after
Ted NuGen and others. We're going to reign in this
weaponization of government through the DNR. We've been going after
the Attorney General for covering up campaign finance issues for
her allies. We're going at the Secretary of State Benson
(07:41):
to try to hold her accountable. So we're doing what
we can to restore oversight back to state government. And
that's what we should do our departments. The government should
be accountable and they should be spending tax dollars wisely
and following the law. And the Michigan House is going
to make them do that.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
The Speaker of the House, Matt Hall, Republican here, as
they've taken back control the House. Lots of well, it's
a shake of and thinking a good way the way
it desperately needed it in Lansing. Thank you so much
for taking the time to be here with us today,
mister Speaker. We appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Thank you. You got it
