Speaker 1 (00:00):
Get the good newsletter all the news they don't want
you to hear any more. Let's get around big tech
with the good newsletter. Stay in touch. Go to Justin
barclay dot com slash good News. That's Justin Barclay dot
com slash good News. Get the good news today. It
just goes to show and the economy and all things
the way they are. You know, everything is so volatile
(00:23):
and everything is so fragile. In fact, restaurants have probably
had some of the worst back and twenty twenty. Everything
they had to do. The ones that are still around
to survive that mess, they continue to be under attack
with your Southern Michigan State Supreme Court with a big
ruling on tips the other day, and how that's all
(00:44):
going to play out. Essentially, they say one in five restaurants,
take your five favorite, one of them won't be here
in the coming days. February is when all of this
is supposed to take place. The left landing Supreme Court
responsible for that ruling. On top up with that, I
think about menu prices, that the ones that are going
to be able to stay open, the ones that will,
(01:06):
menu prices will be more expensive, and the folks that
are working at these restaurants, probably going to make less
because of it. It's all really, all of this is
what happens when the government gets involved. Is I'm here
and I'm here to help. So you can imagine the
surprise and run over a restaurant when they receive a
message from a local Democrat politician, Dave Culture, the executive
(01:30):
at Oakland County, in response to an event that's going
to be held a fundraising event at a restaurant in
Royal Oak, pstyle. As he gets the owner gets this message,
I've always loved your restaurant. Guess I won't be coming anymore.
That comes from Oakland County Executive Dave Culture, allegedly the
message that came through on Facebook the other day. But
(01:52):
Scolage joins us right now with the latest on this story,
and Pat, I thank you for taking the time to
be here with us today and talk about this. Pat
Lamara with with thestio in Royal Oak and as I
just mentioned this, but you guys have been through helen
back in restaurants and this just adds insult to injury.
Tell us what happened.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Sure, well, thanks for having me, you know, so I've
been in business in Florida and now here. Right. So
I started my business venture in twenty nineteen, so I
can easily say that we lived into Americas, right, two
totally different americas. And you know, opening up a business
is you know, it's a heroic mission. There really is.
(02:37):
And when it comes to opening up a business here,
it almost seems like a suicide mission. Now, you know,
I can explain, you know, in like detail of like
how I actually became very successful, but you know, when
it comes to that message that was sent, it's kind
of like very peaty and like childish in a way.
(02:58):
So the reality is I have a business, I have
a fifteen thousand square for building, and it's a Wednesday
night that we're hosting this event, right, So I would
have hosted just about any event, but I kind of
want to, you know, find out about the person before
I go ahead and get political, which I'm really not
getting political, but now I am, because you know, the
gloves are off at this point. I met with Nick
(03:21):
and you know, we spoke and I liked what he
had to say, and he seems like one of those
guys that I think that you know, could be a
long time, long term friendship right. So he's a real person,
real business person. And when I said, you know it's
a heroic mission, you know, he's been in business. He knows,
you know, what it is to be in business. And
you know, I'd like to ask what that guy's ever
(03:41):
built referred to Dave Coulter, right, So I don't know
what it is that he built. But the reality is
we are in business, and when it comes to local business,
you would think that the leaders would support everyone, not
just the people that are on their side, because you know,
we are taxpayers, live in the community, and it's just
(04:04):
very uh disappointing, right that you have leadership that's willing
to uh, you know, want to destroy you versus uh
keep you going.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Right, You've got a message you've got to You've got
a message on the Facebook for the restaurant the Facebook account.
Is that correct?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yes, And it basically.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Said, hey, you used to love eating there and I'm
not going to eat there again kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Is that right?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
When? When did when did this come through? And have
you had any other contact with this guy?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Dave Coulter, No, no contact.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
And this is the Oakland County executive. So you're talking
about the top guy in the county. This is somebody
that probably can make life pretty miserable for you if
he wants to. Uh Yet, do you feel is there
any sense that you feel threatened by this? Obviously it's
concerning that he would he would uh, you know, make
such a statement, But do you feel any thread bodies?
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Well, you know what, do you know what they say?
You know, you do something good, they tell one person,
you do something bad, they tell ten according to that
guy did something terrible to him. So maybe it'll tell
a hundred or a thousand, but he has you know reach.
But regardless, I don't bend the knee to anyone ever. Right,
and you know, coming from Florida opening up businesses, you know,
(05:22):
we went from you know, twenty nineteen, you know, doing
two million in revenue to like close to seventeen million
a year in revenue. Right, we went from thirty employees
to three hundred employees. Now you think, it's like, why
would someone want to boycott a business that supports that
many you know, individuals parting their families. That's what really,
(05:43):
that's really what triggered me. It's like, why would you
want to boycott the person that probably you know, put
health insurance in place before it was even a thing, right,
So I did most of my growth in Florida, and
then felt that the timing was right that people were
going to be tired of you know, the bs with
the mask and you know, the lockdowns that I figured
(06:05):
people were going to be over the government here in Michigan.
So we came to Michigan, and you know, we expanded
here in Michigan as well, with more scores on the map.
So I plan on being here in Oakland County for
some time, right, maybe even forever. I happen to like it,
I happen to enjoy it. You know. The bottom line
is people have to stand up for themselves. Never been
(06:25):
to me. And when it comes to business, you know,
you just have to stand up for what you believe in.
I mean, we put out a great product. You know,
we we employed quite a bit of people. Our employees
are you know happy. I mean, you know, we probably
have in our corporation now like over ten twelve people
that are breaking one hundred thousand a year on salary
(06:47):
and then tipped employees, which that's going to be a thing.
You're right about that come February. You know, government should
stay out of you know, small business, maybe even out
of all businesses. Right, So we're gonna we're gonna have
some challenges, I'm sure. But you know, when you're you
know sharp, and you're smart and you don't rely on
the government, you know you can maneuver and make money
(07:11):
and take care of people.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
All of this started as Nick, Joe and I who's
running for a county executive as a Republican, decided to
host a fundraising event there at Pastile in Royal Oak
August the fourteenth. By the way, if you want information
about that, we'll give you a link and you can
get online and get it all. But I'm sure they
(07:33):
would love to have you there. They would love to
have you any night of the week, I'm sure. But
this is you know, this is where this all came from.
And and apparently the county executive, according to the message
that was sent on Facebook, took issue with that and
sent this message. And that's why the whistle's been blown
(07:54):
about this. And we found out about it to a
third party here. I mean, Pat, you didn't come calling,
Nick didn't come calling, but somebody else had reached out
and said did you see this? And the story is
now growing, I hope more people will cover it and
demand some accountability from the county executive. You ought to
issue an apology, and you know what I think you
ought to do. I think you ought to bring the
(08:16):
staff in the office out to uh Out to eat
at Pistyle and make a make up for it in
that way and say, you know, we support your business,
We're going to support all small business. I will hold
my breath on that. But in the meantime, Pat Well
will do is we'll ask people to support you. Obviously,
somebody who's trying to make it small business owners, this
is this is not an easy road. And I know
(08:38):
you've got the jobs for it. Obviously you got the perseverance,
it sounds like. But man, in a day and age
where it's tougher and tougher every day to run a business,
this is not the kind of thing that you want
to see coming from the elected officials.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
No, no, for sure. Now, I mean, but you do
have to have thick skin, you know. So I mean
that's the thing. And you know, and yes I met Nick.
He's a great guy. And like you know, I am
a registered Republican, always have been. But you know the
truth is and I think everyone's kind of the same way.
You know, I'm a communist in my house that control everything.
I'm a socialist in my you know, to my friends
(09:15):
and my family. I'm a Democrat in my little local neighborhood.
You know, I'm a republican city, county, state level. And
you know, truth is, I'm a far right libertarian anarchist
when it comes to the federal government. I mean, I
think they need to keep their hands off our business.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yeah, no, I can see why. After everything you've been
through over the last few years. I don't think it's
any doubt, especially all the damage that's happened here in Michigan. Pat,
let us know if we could support you in any way, obviously, Again,
Hostyle in Royal Oak, maybe we ought to just come
over for dinner one day and uh and just have
an army of people join us. It looks it looks amazing.
(09:53):
Your pizza looks great. You guys got all kinds of
great dishes. What are folks gonna find? If they do,
we'll give you a chance to give the a restaurant
a plug. By the way, nothing better than for free advertising.
But what are what are they going to find? When
they come into pistaile.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Well I means pasta maker, so every piece of pasta
is made by hand in the place every day. Like
I said, it's a fifteen thousand square foot building, you know,
first floor restaurant, second floor, you know banquet nightclub on
Friday Saturday called Double Ow. Very cool. And then we
have a beautiful rooftop right that overlooks you know, the
Detroit Zoo water Tower, which is a really nice view.
(10:29):
Beautiful rooftop and again all handmade pasta, old school Italian
American dishes that you can pretty much only have on
Sunday at you know some Italian Americans house.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
I love it, sounds sounds sounds perfect. Actually I'm getting
hungry you just thinking about it. Hey, Pat, thank you
so much.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
In Old County, we have a pastao opening up in
the next couple of weeks in gross Point and it's
not Oakland County but right on Kurk downtown gross Point.
Very cool, simple Italian spot. It's your everyday affordability if
you That's what we like to say.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Fantastic. Keep us posted on all of this and if
folks want to know more, they can go to eat
