Speaker of the House Matt Hall joins Justin for a hard-hitting conversation on Michigan’s missed opportunities, failing infrastructure, and how President Trump’s America-First policies are creating a manufacturing boom — just not in Michigan. Hall exposes how Democrats blew through the state’s $9 billion surplus on failed green energy deals and bloated pork projects, while offering no real solutions to fix local roads. He lays out a commonsense plan to rebuild infrastructure without raising taxes, calls out Whitmer’s reckless spending, and warns that without serious reform, Michigan risks losing out on historic investments and jobs. Plus, an update on election integrity efforts and the push to block foreign money from hijacking our ballot process.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaker Matt Hall joining us with the latest and on
this and can you imagine finally fixing the roads and
without having to spend any more money, a little more
common sense, some truth and logic mixed in for you
this morning. Good morning, speak mister speaker, how.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Are you, hey, good morning, Thanks for having me again.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
So I was looking at your statement on this, and
I think it's funny how the Democrats are trying to
point the finger and blame Trumpy.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
You make the you make the point in your statement.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
No, the very policies Trump is putting into place are
going to make plants like this possible, and even more
so in Michigan.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
With well what happened here exactly.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
I mean you look at this, right, I mean these
semiconductors in thost cases are not manufactured in the United States,
and so what President Trump is doing by putting tariffs
on is he's incentivizing.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Them to bring that to the United States.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
And you're you're seeing that with big investments from Micron
in New York and Idaho. You see this Taiwan semiconductor
company making huge investments in Arizona in on shoring chip technologies.
And I've spoken to President Trump about it. I've spoken

(01:16):
to Howard Lutnik, his Commerce secretary. They're only going to
make great deals for the American people. They recognize the
value of these chips. But we're not just going to
pay out unlimited no matter what the cost is.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
That's a contrast from.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Whitmer's philosophy the MEDC. Under Whitmer, they just pay out
any amount of money without regard to value. For the
tax dollars, we saw reports in Bridge they were going
to spend six billion dollars, which would make it by
far the biggest incentive that the state's ever given out
or in the company.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Bann This told him, no, said, even.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
For six billion dollars, we're not doing this plant in Michigan.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It really is interesting because I think that that you
just made this point, there's there is sort of an
old way of doing business there behind the scenes that
she she's it sounds like there are more and more
of these and m ADC's tied into it. And I
know you've been looking at this. You get some oversight
there on some of this general Dana Nessels digging into

(02:21):
some of these things as well. How much of this
is part of that sort of old process where many
just gets slushed around and folks end up well, whether
they though it or not, on the losing end.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Well, yeah, I mean we saw the Democrats spend our
entire state surplus nine billion dollars, the biggest surplus in
the history of Michigan.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
I blew it.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
All on electric battery plants and pork projects to get
politicians to vote for electric battery plants, and and so
you know these investments, they put billions of dollars into them.
We saw Board, you know, g M, Goshen, many others,
and yet to create any jobs. In fact, the GM

(03:06):
plant they took the money and then they said, well, uh,
there's no demand for these, so we're going to build
tahoes and we're going to build big trucks at that
plan in Orion. They're not even going to turn it
into an EV plan, even though we gave them six
hundred million dollars to do that. Under Whitmerch. You know,
Trump is bringing real cars back, you know, and we

(03:30):
saw those coming to that Orient plant. So you know
what we see here from the Trump administration is they
passed in the One Big Beautiful Bill, a big tax credit,
thirty five percent tax credit to bring chips manufacturing.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
To the United States.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
So we saw those old deals before that.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Now with this, that tells.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
You a lot about the state of Michigan. We weren't
able to land this deal. But but really what this
is is this company they they had changes in their board.
They recently had a merger and this new board they
have just said, we're not sure we want to make
this big of an investment in one plan.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
That was what this was.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
And then Democrats with Trump arrangement syndrome, they blamed Trump.
But this Trump's administration was helping us and they're committed
to helping us try to do something even bigger for
Genesee County moving forward. But you know, this is just
typical Democrats taking a business decision and trying to blame

(04:32):
it on Trump when all the evidence shows us otherwise.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Speaker of the House here in Michigan, Matt Hall with
us right now. Trump has had an amazing six months
here in a second term's president.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
You've also been off to a running.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Start, lots of wins racking up there in the House
as a speaker, and I got to be pretty proud
of that. Yesterday we talked with former Michigan State Center
Pat Colbeck, who was in front of the committee. They're
talking about election integrity, really, I think shining the light
on some of these issues that for far too long

(05:06):
have been ignored, but obviously in your oversight and the
folks who have decided these things need to be taken
a look at this story after story of things like
this weaponization that is happening inside state government as well.
These are big news, big pieces of stories. But one
of the things I know that you're most focused on
right now is trying to fix the roads and do

(05:30):
it without having to spend any money. But you got
some issues standing in the way there. Let's talk about that,
and I think it's probably one of the biggest issues
folks want to see really repaired here in this state.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Well, you're right, and Rachelle Smith's doing a great job
on election integrity and I was with her yesterday. She's
working to root out all the foreign money. They're spending
more money in Michigan, tens of millions of dollars foreign
nationals on these ballot campaigns, and Rachelle's going to be

(06:03):
introduced in some bills to stop that very soon. But
on the roads, We're trying to help Governor Whitmer deliver
on her one campaign promise, which was to fix the roads,
something she hasn't done. Grew the budget by forty three percent,
but we haven't fixed the roads under Whitmer. So we
offered her an opportunity.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
We said, look, let's go fix the local roads.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
I will show you how you can do it without
raising taxes. We get rid of a lot of these
big giveaways we talked about. We end the pork projects
and we dedicate every single dollar collected at the.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Pump to roads.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
I mean, most states do that, Michigan doesn't, and then
we can we can fix the roads without raising taxes.
We just have to spend our money wisely and with
a strategy, and that puts the money into the roads.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
We need to fix them three billion dollars a year.
Democrats have no plan.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
They talked about this, they campaigned on it. We put
a plan on the table, we passed it.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
They don't know what to do. They have no plan.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
So I said, look, we're not moving forward on anything
else until you guys come to the table with a
solution to fix our roads. The people Michigan have been
demanding it for two longs.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
So they went home. They went home. That's what they've done.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Well, that sounds really immature. I just you know, and
again people, I don't think people understand. It's not just
you and me driving the work in the car every day,
just wishing. And there wasn't so much wear and tear
on my car, and I didn't have to spend so much.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
That's a big deal.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
But another big deal is we've got all of this
money coming back into this is to me, this is
the biggest issue for me right now as we're watching
what's playing out in the state of Michigan, is it.
I desperately do not want to miss out on this
major opportunity of a lifetime. We've got President Trump bringing
all of the manufacturing, all of us back in the

(07:58):
United States investment here. I don't want Michigan to miss
out on it because we don't have the infrastructure. It's
things like the cost of energy or just the fact
that their trucks have to be on these roads and
what's that going to cost.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
All of that. We've got to be.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Ready for prime time, and we've been sorelingly neglected over
the last eight years or so. And I know that's
your focus, is getting us back on track.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
I spoke to the Indiana governor Mike Brown this week,
and you know, they're lowering their income tax. I mean,
Michigan was the only state in the country under their
Democrat trifecta that raised the income tax last year. They're
lowering their income tax. They're focusing on creating a great
environment to it to improve their local businesses. They're investing

(08:47):
in their infrastructure, and.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
They're getting away from these.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
Big checks like Whipper's writing, and they're working on the fundamentals.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
And you're seeing, you know, when you have policies.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Like that, combined with President and Trump's administration, you're seeing
a lot more deals coming to states like Indiana than
you are Michigan. I mean, he can only do so much,
but they're going to pick states that are.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
More competitive than Michigan.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
And so our job is to try to fix that.
And I'll just say, you know, their articles criticizing me
because it's the fewest bills passed since nineteen forty, We've
only had six bills signing.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
The law this year.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
I'm just saying to the Democrats, if you want more bills,
then you guys fix the roads because you know what
they're going to do, They're going to go campaign on
it again. And they don't have a plan. They never
had a plan. It's just a talking point. It's not
a talking point for most michigan Ers. We want our
local roads.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Fix absolutely well, from your mouth to God's years.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
And we hope again with your work there obviously folks
standing behind you support.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
What can people do.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
We hear this obviously on the radio where you coming
on giving us updates, and we appreciate that. But what
can folks do to to make sure that they're supporting
you and and any way they can.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Well, you know, I think you know, really pushing on
these Democrat senators, you know, to spend tax dollars wisely
to invest in our local roads and to focus on
existing companies and helping create an environment where they can
grow instead of headhunting. And you know, showing up in

(10:28):
the in these elections and voting for your local Republicans
all the way down the ballot is going to make
a big difference because at the state rep level, the
state Senate rep level, governor, we have a real opportunity
to make a difference in the next election.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
It is a Speaker of the House. Lots of big
things happening well. Appreciate the the constant updates, always coming
on to give us the latest on this.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Matt Hall, thank you so much. We appreciate you being
here with us today.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
You got it.
