Speaker 1 (00:00):
Today is the first Rocky spring training game, obviously not
here in dead for them.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
They're up against the Ears and the Diamondbacks this afternoon.
Koe's very own voice of the Rockies, Jerry Schimmel, joining
us now in the Koe Commons Spirit Health Hotline to
talk all about it.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Jerry, how much snow do you have there at Salt River?
Speaker 4 (00:15):
You know it's everything's scanceled today, no game. We got
about ten cents of snow. So just like you guys,
it's got.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
To be beautiful weather out there in Arizona for baseball.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
I don't know if it could be any better. I
mean yesterday it was I think seventy eight degrees in sunshine.
It's supposed to warm in the eighties this weekend and
next week in sunshine every day. It's what spring training
weather's supposed to be like.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
It's absolutely beautiful and we'll have the game here at
one o'clock on KOA. Jerry, what can listeners expect for
the Rockies this year?
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Well, what you hope is that they'll be improved. Back
to back one hundred lost seasons. You don't have a
lot of optimism, but I think when you look at
the team. You got some good young players that you
can build on, and I think the biggest thing right
now if you're looking for improvement is that starting rotation.
It's set and it's probably the most talented I think
rotation the Rocky has had in maybe four or five years,
(01:08):
and that usually is the first sign of success or
rebuild success, and that's you hope for a good starting rotation,
good solid major league rotation, and then some young arms
that you're going to see eventually from the miners, including
Chase Dolander, who everybody's talking about, who had a great
bullpen session yesterday. So there's optimism. There's always, as we know,
(01:30):
a handful of teams in Major League Baseball that surprise everybody.
They either are way better than people have thought they
were going to be or sometimes worse. And I think
the Rockies in that first group, we certainly have a chance.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
To be You talk about health, and I heard Bud
Black's comments about the rotation feeling good about getting guys healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
You also mentioned about the health of Chris Bryant.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
What could that mean if he could play a near
complete season for this team.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
I think it's everything here. He's one. When he's healthy,
one of the premier hitters of the game, and to
be real key for this team is whether he can
bounce back. And he's had three seasons with the Rockies
that have been rugged fighting injuries. He's got a back
issue that everybody's looking at to see what it's going
to turn out to be this year. So he is
the key. If you can get him healthy and give
(02:15):
him back even close to where he's been in the
patch where he's been an MVP and one of the
premier hitters in the game, then you've got something. I
don't know if he's going to play the field a
whole lot, but he's healthy, he's going to be your
regular DH probably and maybe playing the right field, maybe
play first manp a little bit. But he could come
back and be the old Chris Bryant. It would be
huge for this team.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Jerry mentioned Chase Stollander twenty three years old, and the
videos that we saw from him pitching yesterday would looked
pretty fabulous. What are some of the other Rockies younger
standouts that you're like, Yeah, keep an eye on him.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
He may be good this year.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yeah, that's a good question. I think there's a handful
of guys that might make this team. But I think
the regular lineup is pretty much set right now. I
don't any big surprises. The bullpen might look a little
bit different. Stunt Alexander was a guy that was signed
yesterday at left handed, I think is really going to
help this team, and I think especially because he is
left handed, they're kind of missing that in that bullpen.
(03:09):
But we're just looking for bounce back from guys rather
than position players being impact players. New guys. I think
you will see a new arm or two in the bullpen.
I think you will see no Lander and some others
in that rotation at least getting a shot the rotation
later on the season. But in terms of position players,
I think the Rockies are pretty much set right now,
(03:30):
and Jerry.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
They gets a chance to face the Diamondbacks. That's a
division fo I correct me if I'm wrong. We think
the Rockies should be better, but the rest of that
division seems to have gotten better as well.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
It's amazing, isn't that. Yeah, Arizona almost made the playoffs
a year ago. They won eighty three games, I think
for eighty five games, and they should be better this year.
We're going to see Corbyn Burns their free agent acquisition
that they signed to over two hundred million dollars contracts.
So yeah, when you look at the division, y'all see
Dodgers first. San Francisco is always competitive, the San Diego
(04:02):
Padres are super talented again, and Arizona always sits there
and they win games as well. So yeah, it's a
tough division. Someone said the other day, Hey, if they
weren't playing, if they're playing that the Rockies any other
division at baseball, they probably would win ten more games.
I think they would win at least ten more games
not playing in this division.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Jerry, with a minute, we have left real quick.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
The Rockies had a chance to play around with that
MLB's new automated ball strike system in the spring training earlier.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
What will that look like for the game today?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Interesting. I think it's going to be because we're going
to see it throughout spring training and starting today. I
think that it's kind of mixed reviews. I've talked to
some minor league guys that have used it in the
past and they like it. And what's interesting is only
a pitcher, a catcher, or a hitter can challenge. They
manager can't do it. You can't look at the dugout
and see whether you know, they look at a quick
(04:54):
replay and see if you can see you got a
challenge that on this spot, and only three different players
can do it. So we'll see it starting today. I
saw that in that Cubs and Dodgers game yesterday that
a couple of pitchers actually challenged and won their challenges.
So I think it'll be interesting to see out on
fold starting with this afternoons game.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
You know, a lot of traditionalists are concerned about it
totally changing the game, But you're albody been around the
game so long and called so many it is this
overdue to embrace technology more major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
I think so. I think so, Marty. And you know,
I think what major League Baseball is doing the right
way is experimenting with it, not saying, hey, we're going
to implement this thing. But let's take a look at it.
The miners have done it. It seems to be having
great reviews. You know, they did that with the pitchclock.
They used the miners for a while. It worked. They
tried it major League Baseball. It worked great. So this
(05:44):
is another thing that I think major League Baseball just
getting its feet wet on, which I think is a
good thing. Rather than implementing it all over the place, Hey,
let's just take a look at it and see if
we like it.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
The Rockies taken on the Diamondbacks in Arizona for their first.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Spring training game today.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Pregame coverage begins here at one one o'clock, first pitch
one ten here on Koa, the home of the Rockies.
And if you want to think spring, head to our
social media pages. You can see the view that we
have of the ballpark. There definitely a very stark contrast
in the snow.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
And the snow and the snow. We haven't Denver right now.
Voice of the Rockies is Jerry Shimmer Shimmel, Thanks Jerry
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Okay, have a great weekend, you guys.
