Speaker 1 (00:00):
Popular, You're gonna be poppy. I'll take KOA News Times
seven twenty now on Colorado's Morning News. The ninety seventh
Academy Awards taking place on Sunday. Best Picture Award nominees
A Nora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune Part Two,
Amelia Perez, I'm still here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicket.

(00:22):
But there's a lot more to the Oscars than just
the Best Picture Award. Joining us now on the KWA
Common Spirit Health Hotline to talk more about it. Film critic,
Hollywood and Toto. It's Christian Toto. Christian, thank you so
much for your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Oh my player.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Hey, walk us through a little bit of what we're
expecting for the Oscars. Let's start with the Best Picture
nominees here. Is there one that you think is just
an absolute shoe in or can we see maybe a
little bit of an upset in this category?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
I think we're looking at shoeing and I think you know,
the the problem with the modern award show that that's
going on today is that there are so many other
award shows that approach the Oscars that we get a
sense of who's got the momentum who has won so
many awards prior to the Big Nights, So that certainly
applies to Anora, which I think will win Best Picture.

(01:08):
And you know, I think this was more of a
toss up for a while. Amelia Perez was obviously favored
thirteen nominations, but it's been hammered by bad buzz the
lead actress in that particular case, her past problematic posts
have been called into question, So I think there's been
a shifting in the sense of what we'll win. So yeah,

(01:29):
I don't think we're going to see a movie sweep
this Sunday, but I think that Anora will win Best Picture.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, Christian, let's talk about Amelia Perez real quick. Do
you think controversies play into a role of who they
select because they don't want to have the bad publicity sadly?

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yes, I mean at the end of the day, it
should be about the performance, about the movie, but you know,
I mean artists subjective of the voting is subjective. Things
do come into play, and you know, we've seen this
in previous years where it's almost like a political campaign
where the other party may leak something about what someone
said or something inconvenient about a movie, you know, The Brutalist,

(02:04):
which I thought was terrific. They used a little bit
of AI to tweak some of the voice performances, so
that caused some bad buzz as well. I don't know
how much impact that will have. So yeah, it's just
the nature of Oscars today, how these stories leak into
the press and sometimes impact voting. So yeah, that's that's
just part and parce of what we're.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Dealing with with that Best Pictures nominees list. Is there
any on there that you don't think deserves to be
on there?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Oh gosh, you know, I admire Amelia Perez for being
bold and original, but it's really flawed. And you know,
I'm not alone there. It's been hammered in a lot
of different quarters. Some talk about it it doesn't really
represent Mexican culture the way it should. There's some you know,
language issues there. I just think it's a bit of
a mess, but it's a colorful, fun mess. It's a

(02:52):
swing for the fences, so I appreciate it on that level. Otherwise,
I think the list is pretty solid. I mean, you listen,
I don't think Wicked will win. I loved Complete Unknown
to Bob Dylan Biopick. So I think it's a good list,
but you know, and I also think that if there's
going to be a dark horse, it might be conclave
about the selection of a new pope that one could
sneak in there. But I think right now and Norah

(03:12):
looks like a favorite.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Conclave definitely timely in our day and age right now too.
You mentioned two of the movies of the three that
I've seen, a complete Unknown Dune is the other one,
and then Wicked. With those three, I feel like I've
seen all the main blockbuster, mainstream popular movies, however you
want to call them. Do you think those have any
type of leg up because they're just more mainstream. I

(03:35):
know that's not the best word for it, but I
feel like those were the blockbuster movies that a lot
of people saw.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
I agree, And it really does show you the problem
with the oscars. Listen, we don't want the Best Picture
nominees to reflect the box office charts. The shouldn't just go,
you know, down the line, you made the most money,
you get the Best Picture nominations. It's not the way
it should work. But there is a real disconec because
a lot of these films most people haven't seen. The
good part of that is that you can see a

(04:01):
lot of them on streaming right now. I mean, Amelia
Peis has been on Netflix for months, So yeah, there
is a disconnect there. You know. Back in the day,
often they would be the Best Picture winner would be
something that everyone had seen, you know, and that's just
not the case anymore. So with Anora. It's not a blockbuster.
It didn't make a lot of money. Most people either
haven't seen it or haven't even heard about it. But

(04:22):
it could win this weekend.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
And it's funny because movie theaters must know it could
do well this weekend, because I'm already seeing it start
to get back in re release in movie theaters of
them being like okay, people will be like who is
this and why'd they win? And let me go check
it out, Christian real quick. When it comes to Best
Actor or actress, do you have some guests for those?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah? The end the best actor category is really tight.
Adrian Brody is sensational in The Brutalist. He did win before,
but he's just so good. But then again, Timothy Shallimy
was wonderful as Bob Dylan. I'm not the huge. I'm
not a huge fan of his, but it converted me.
That performance was wonderful. Then Best Actors, I think it's
a fight between Mikey Madison from Honora and Demi Moore.

(05:04):
And Demi Moore has won several recent awards. She's a
great story, kind of a comeback situation. I think that
kind of narrative works well with voters, and she's terrific
in the substance. It's a very bold and daring horror
film that has a lot to say and for all
those reasons, you know, good for them for nominating it
and for bringing it to our attention because it's not
your typical movie, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Is there any other categories actors, actresses, things that people
should look out for for the Oscars this weekend?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
You know, I think the Best Supporting Actor category is
so interesting. Jeremy Strong in The Apprentice is terrific. But
then hearing Culkan in A Real Pain, which is another
movie I don't think a lot of people saw, which
was wonderful, deserves some attention there. But yeah, I'll be
curious to see how Clinan O'Brien does as host. You know,
we haven't seen him In recent years, he's been more
of a podcaster of late of course, he has so

(05:51):
much late night experience. But I think he's a good choice.
I think he can kind of walk that balance between
poking a little fun in Hollywood but also being reverential.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
To more at Hollywood. Intoto dot com film critic, it's
Christian Toto. Christian, thank you so much for your time
this morning. We appreciate it.
