Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now on Colorado's Morning News.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
In Colorado, we can build a future focused on the
well being of all of us, not just preserving the
wealth of the future. It's here we can make healthcare, housing,
and childcare more affordable. It's here we can best fight
Trunk's corruption while building a better future for our kids
and our grandkids.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
That was just a bit of Senator Michael Bennett's campaign
announcement He's running for Colorado governor later this morning.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
I was just announced moments ago and joining us now
in the KA Commentspirital Health Hotline. One of our favorite
political analysts, it's Mike Dino. Mike, thanks for coming on
to us US this morning. And maybe not too much
of a surprise, but what is your initial reaction with
Senator Bennett's wanting to run for governor.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Well, you know, I think it's great. I mean, you know,
the Democrats are going to have some good choices, certainly
with Attorney General Phil Wiser already in the race and
being showing that he's a strong candidate both fundraising and
certainly what he's doing in terms of being the age.
You know, Michael Bennett only increases the profile of the race.
And uh, you know, the Dems have good choices. I

(01:02):
think that's outstanding.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
How does this impact some of the other candidates who
are in the race, like Phil Wiser and maybe some
who are considering jumping into the race.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Well, Kenya, that's a good question, great question. It's you know,
people ask what ken Salazar is going to be doing,
and you know he he's probably keeping that option open
said maybe he'll he'll let something let people know maybe
a little later in June. But the bottom line is
is that, uh, you know, the Dems have good choices here.
Michael Bennett, certainly, I think has had a very productive

(01:38):
career in Washington. Uh, certainly, Uh for for folks like
him who want to see things get done. It's been
frustrating at times. I think he wants to bring some
of his experience, certainly on finances, education, outdoors issues, uh,
you know, health, healthcare, and mental health. He wants to

(01:59):
put that into an exams pecutive role here in Colorado,
and I think that's a great way for him to
pursue his next step on the political ladder.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Well, it seems like Senator Benner really cleared the field.
I mean, he's got John Hickenloopers a support Joanah Goose,
Jason Crow, Mayor Mike Johnston as well former Mayor Denver Wellington.
Web not saying any of those were necessarily considering this,
but those are a lot of people whose names get
floated about. What does that say about if you want
to say the support behind Michael Bennett.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Well, you know, it's always good to get the big names,
but you got a campaign, and I do think Senator
Bennett appreciates that. Certainly, Phil Wiser has already been out
there doing that. He's been to all the counties in Colorado. Certainly,
you know, in Senator Bennett's role on the Agricultural Committee,
He's no stranger to Colorado throughout the rural areas, in
the non urban areas. He has a very extensive reach

(02:51):
in what he's done campaigning, you know, for election and
re election. He had a very good reelection you know,
back in twenty twenty two and showed that, you know,
he certainly has a lot of support throughout Colorado.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I know it's very early in the process here, but
is there any indication on who Governor Polis will endorse,
and really how much will that endorsement carry weight when
it comes to the primary.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Well, you know, Ken, you and I I don't think
he you know, Governor Polis, you know there's any benefit
one way for the or the other for him getting
in and endorsing. You know, I think he's you know,
certainly as a governor has done a great job in
stewarding our resources here in this state. And so you know,
at this point in time, I don't expect him to

(03:44):
weigh in. He doesn't have to, Certainly, the candidates are
in the race have to, you know, sort of prove, hey,
you know, we've got what it takes to be governor
and to follow on with all the good stuff the
Governor Polis has done.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Do you see Senator Bennett being a similar to a
guy or Polis? And I know the governor is at
times tacked back a little bit with some of his
perceptions and takes on things. But do you think Bennett
has a similar style and vibe or is he going
to bring some sort of different approach to Colorado and
even a different vision.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Well, you know, Governor Polis at times has been you know,
tabbed as being more libertarian than democrat. I'm not sure
that's the case or people view it that way, But
but I think you know, Michael Bennett is is a Democrat. Uh,
He's certainly got a lot of practicality, similar to a
governor Polis. I think, you know, he hits it on

(04:35):
all cylinders. I mean, he you know, he's got a
great financial mind, great policy mind. You know, he's got
a legal background. You know, I think he'll I think
he'll be more hands on certainly and how the state
is run from a financial standpoint. He certainly did that
when he was chief of staff too, then Mayor hicking
Looper at the city and you know, his background and

(04:56):
education and certainly pursuing issues like the child tax credit.
You know, he wants to see a better balance in
terms of people having a chance, you know, to be
successful in their lives.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Here in Colorado, you can't get away from the money
piece in politics. Curious, Mike, any idea how much money
it's going to cost to run for governor to win
the seat?

Speaker 4 (05:17):
Well, you know, in this state right now, you know
it's really the who's going to win the Democratic primary?
And you know, certainly having four to five million to spend,
you know, keeps you competitive. I think at least the
two candidates are in the race now the ag and
the Senator. They're going to have the money they need

(05:38):
to be a competitive from a fundraising standpoint, so that'll
be good. You know, at this point, the Republicans don't
really have anybody in the race that I think is competitive.
But if Barbar Kirkmeyer, a state senator, decides that she
wants to get in it, she'll make it interesting.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Who would be a good replacement for Bennett in terms
of that open seat.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Well, I actually think we'll actually see our first woman
in the US Senate from Colorado. Should should Senator Bennett
find himself in the governor's office. Any names, Well, you know,
we certainly have some some We have Brittany Petterson, a
congresswoman who is certainly distinguished yourself at late of late

(06:26):
on a particular issue in Congress related to being able
to vote as a mother as a parent. And there
may be some others in the wings too, But you know,
that's a lot of speculation right now. I mean, you know,
Senator Bennett has to run a race and he has
to win, and certainly phil Wiser is not going to

(06:47):
back down from his candidacy.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
We'll have to bring me back on when we get
more information. Always love having you on Mike. Thank you.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
Hey Marty, you have a great day. Can you take care?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Thank you, Political Analyst, it's Mike Dino.
