Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Colorado's Morning News. Marty lends Gina gondgod morning.
The largest passenger aircraft in the world landed at Dia
Airport or DIA that's redundant. Yesterday aoys Geen Dixon was there.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
He joins us now on the KWA Common Spirit Hall Hotline. Gina,
thank you so much for joining us bright and early
this morning. I mean, the video that you took on
our Instagram page is absolutely amazing to see this aircraft land.
Walk us through what it was like watching the biggest
passenger aircraft land at DIA.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
It was a ton of fun. And from someone who
loves airplanes like myself, who was kind of one of
those bucket list type days where you get to stand
really on the tarmac kind of next to the runway
as the plane is coming into land. There's not many
opportunities to do that, but everyone out there was just
having a blast. There was a lot of waiting around

(00:50):
waiting for the plane to come in, waiting for the plane,
for the captain to decide which runway he was going
to use. Once he got that sorted, about fifteen minutes
before the plane landed, able to go and get set up,
and I mean, it was about twelve media members all
from the Denver area, a couple of national airplane riders
who came in for this flight as well, and then

(01:13):
it was just waiting and waiting, and then we finally
saw the plane make its turn on the final approach
and you see this massive airplane come into land. I mean,
this plane holds five hundred and nine people in the
way that it's configured with moltans, so it has a
ton of people in a double decker configuration. Truly incredible.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Luftanza flies into DIA all the time because we're one
of the busiest airports in the world, and they're in
international operation as well, flined into Munich and places like
that because they're German based. But I'm surprised, Keenan, that
this plane hasn't landed at our airport before. Why is it?
Is it because it's so new, or it just didn't
have the clearance clearance if.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
You will, nice nice airplane reference there. I think it
just had to do with the fact that the airline
didn't see enough profitability to use a plane this big.
You know, you need you want to have a certain
capacity on a plane like that. They can carry up
to five hundred and nine people to see the profitability

(02:13):
from it. And I think that route has gotten so
popular back and forth between Munich and Denver and the
other flight that Mustansa operates, which is to Frankfurt daily
from Denver, and they just wanted to explore this option.
Now you finally get the A three eighty again. It
holds up to five hundred and nine people. The last

(02:34):
planes that they would use going to Munich is the
A three fifty, with sold about two hundred and ninety
people on Lufton's's so you know that's a big jump.
You're adding two hundred people to a flight that you
want to make sure that you're making money off of.
So this flight will run through September and then you

(02:55):
know they'll reconsider if they're going to continue to use
the A three eighty, But for now now it's daily
service all the way through the summer.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
And it sounds like the A three eighty once landed
at DIA before back in twenty eighteen, but that was
actually just a divert to Denver due to a medical emergency,
so it wasn't something that was ever planned. You didn't
have the airplane enthusiasts standing by waiting for this monumental moment. Keenan,
were you able to speak with some of the people
that were there. Did you have a chance to speak
with CEO Phil Washington talk a little bit about what

(03:24):
this means for our airport.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, so I did have a chance to talk to
Phil Washington and we had a good conversation. You know,
obviously the media buzz around this huge event. They had
a big press conference after the plane landed with the
whole captain and crew and everyone there as well, and
he talked about this is a step forward for the airport,

(03:46):
for Denver as a whole, really for Colorado as a community,
because it provides the opportunity for more planes like this
to come into Denver and really opens up the world too.
The airport that is kind of in the middle of
America when you look at a map, but because Denver
is United, HUBB and there are some alliances with Luftanza

(04:10):
and United and you know, everything that is afforded to
the airport with size, I mean the longest runway in
North America is sixteen thousand feet. There's a lot of
opportunity for the airport to continue to expand right now.
The goal was set for twenty thirty five to reach
one hundred million passengers annually. They're on pace to hit

(04:33):
that if they continue at this five point eight percent
growth year over year to hit that in twenty twenty eight.
And so Phil Washington had a lot of optimism about
the airport being prepared to do that. They added thirty
seven gates last year. You know, they finished the new
entry way, they're adding new security, so it's going to
be a big step. And you know, one of the

(04:54):
other things that I asked him about was just getting
to the airport for people from Denver and taking inga boulevard.
Obviously the two lanes that kind of splits into three,
which you get closer to the airport, but there can
be a quite the bottleneck there. He said, they're working
on that with the city to go through the environmental
process right now to maybe add some more lanes and
make that process a little bit easier. As this airport continues,

(05:17):
what is a rapid rate of.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Growth, Well, a thousand more flights at that five hundred
passenger plane, what does that get us up to? My
math was it fifty thousand, So yeah, could could maybe
do it yeah way quicker, Keene and Dixon, our own
KOA reporter. Thanks for joining us early, early with this.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
We appreciate it absolutely
