Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back here at COR's Field, and while everybody enjoyed the
victory over the San Diego Padres, we get word that
it is the last victory as the Rockies manager for
Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redman have been relieved
of their duties.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Twice in the Rocky Jack corg and getting the news
that yesterday's victory would be the team manager Bud Blacks last.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit Health Hotline
with reaction. Rockies writer for the MLB, it's Thomas Harding. Thomas,
thank you so much for your time. As always, Kaway's
Chad Bauer joining us on this conversation as well as
we've been talking about it throughout the morning. Your overall
reaction when it comes to the timing of this early late,
just right.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
I thought it was going to happen at some point.
I mean, it seems like for the last few weeks
we've been waiting for some sort of announcement like this
is this the end? I don't think so. I think
that there are a lot of there are a lot
of changes that are going to happen, or at least
have to happen to this organization. This was kind of
you hate to say it, kind of the easy one,

(01:03):
and it's almost cliche. You're losing, you fire your manager,
and you know it gives you and it gives your
fans a message. But they need more than a message.
They need to make a lot of corrections in this organization.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
And Warren Schaeffer Thomas has been very popular in the organization.
What is your reaction to him being promoted to be
the interim for the rest of this season.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Are you talking about a very energetic man, I mean,
and a guy who's a pretty good problem solver if
you go back, I think it was a couple of
seasons ago this team had a very good infield, but
at the start of the year they struggled. They made
some mars for the first month after that they were
the best infield in baseball. And you saw Warren actually
worked with guys change some things when it came to positioning.

(01:48):
Listen to guys who've been around and fixed that problem. Obviously,
there are a lot of problems right now. Defense is
not being good, but that has to do with Ezekiel
Tovar and Tyro Orstrada not being there. But Warren Schaffer,
he showed me that that he can solve a problem.
He showed me that he has a lot of energy.
I mean guys who show up early for work. He
works with him. Now at the major league level, he'll

(02:10):
have fit Hurl beside him to give him some advice
on how to handle a big league club, but he
has handled minor league clubs first.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Thomas Our social media question this morning was who's mostly
a blame for the Rockies disastrous season. It's ownership, manager,
players all equal to blame right now. Ownership is waning
far and away, so based on percentages, how much to
blame on Bud Black for the start of the season.
And also doesn't mean if you don't have the tools
to succeed the players, no matter how good of a
manager you may be, you're not going to have success.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
It would be very hard to have success with the
team that they have right now, especially with the middle
endfield injuries. But even going into the season when people
ask me about it, you guys may have asked me
at some point I said, absolutely everything had to go right.
That means guys coming off Tommy John at the page twelve,
guys couldn't get hurt. Both of those things happen young
guys that they're expecting to do well, they would have

(03:02):
had to have been prodigious well ahead of schedule. That
hasn't happened either. So it's hard to lay a lot
of this at the feet of Bud black The only
thing you could say is because they've struggled so much,
it is a good thing to get a different voice
in there. But the problems that they have, they still
have to work on those, and those are going to
be long term, probably definitely throughout the season and probably beyond,

(03:26):
maybe even a couple of years of attacking the problems.

Speaker 5 (03:30):
Thomas, do you think the Rockies missed Charlie Blackman from
a leadership perspective even more than they thought they would?

Speaker 4 (03:37):
They still had in those previous two years and lost
one hundred games, So I don't think that it's necessarily leadership.
A lot of it has to do with, you know,
I guess the guys who are out there leading by producing.
That's where the issue is is that there just aren't
enough major league regular players out there on that team.

(03:58):
I mean, Ryan mcmatt I do believe is one, but
he struggled a bit. Yeah, he's their insra inspirational leader.
But if you look, there are a lot of younger
guys that are just getting their feet wet in the
major leagues, or guys that are trying to establish themselves.
You're starting to see some good things with Jordan Beck
and Haunter Goodman, but not enough to win ballgames. So

(04:19):
I don't think it's necessarily a guy in the clubhouse leading,
although there does need to be some of that. Because
you have such a young club, you would like to
have a little bit more leadership. But I don't think
that black men's leadership was what was missed. Now black men,
even at this age, is probably better than some of
the lineup options that they have right now.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Wrapping up with you, Thomas Curious, I don't want to
compare ourselves to a Red Sox or to a Mets, Yankees, Dodgers,
you get the idea. But what I think of peer franchises,
say the Tampa Bay Rays, maybe the A's of this season,
it seems like I feel we should be at least
on a little more peer footing with them, but we're not.
Why do you think that is?

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Well?

Speaker 4 (04:57):
I think there are two things. Number one and I
like to compare the Rockies a lot to the Milwaukee Brewers.
I think they're very similar franchises in market or in comparison,
But the Rockies are in the National League West. I
think that makes a huge difference here. Now compare the
Rockies of theirs on the Diamondbacks. What the Diamondbacks have done,

(05:18):
They're just like the Rockies. So are the Padress like
the Rockies. And that they lost some nation some local
TV money, but they were able to trade some of
their prospects and spend money in the right places. I mean,
And those are the things that I would like to
see the Milwaukee Brewers. They've spent a lot of money
over a decade outing other clubs and really collecting information

(05:39):
and making very smart free agent moves. Those are the
things that could fix this franchise.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
And Thomas, what does the future hole for Bud Black?
Do you think he'll retire? Do you think he'll try
to get a job with another organization in the future.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
I think he wont be in baseball in some capacity.
I don't know as a manager. In fact, I was
thinking about this on my way to the airport this morning.
One of the people, because I do think this organization
needs to be beeped up as far as its decision
makers all the way up to the presidential level. One
of the people that can help this is but Black
because he has been in the dugout and manage the

(06:12):
pitching staff here and seeing what's going on. I wouldn't mind,
they say, I guess the old cliches being kicked upstairs.
I wouldn't mind seeing him part of the solution here,
or if not, he will be a part of it
with another club because there's a lot of baseball knowledge there.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
