Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Lion Project is a local nonprofit with a mission
to eradicate food insecurity within Denver low income schools.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
The Line Project hosting its very first country concert and
support of the mission. Line Project Director of Development and
Operations Opry Fouler, joined us earlier on the KOA Common
Spirit Health Studio to tell us a little bit about
the Line Project's mission and upcoming.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Event, The Lion Project. The whole concept behind the Lion
Project is that everyone has a Lion in their life
at some point in time, or maybe multiple lines that
kind of stand in the gap in an area of
need that you may have. So that's where the name
came from. But our whole mission is to create these
mobile food markets to be placed on Title I schools
within Denver metro area. So we have a partnership with

(00:41):
Mile High Companies, who is a fourth generation family owned
business that was one of the first food supply companies
in the state. So they used to supply food by
horse and wagon, and they are donating their trucks which
currently deliver food to McDonald specifically the potatoes for the
French frise at McDonald's. They're donating four trailers a year,

(01:01):
which we then will retro fit and turn into mobile markets.
And we have our first partnership which is with RB's Foundation,
so they're funding our first market, which is super exciting.
But our whole big vision is just to essentially eradicate
food and security in elementary age students and communities within
Denver metro area by providing about fifty trailers.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
I'm going to assume most of these are low income
areas and then we always hear a lot about food
deserts as part of it as well.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
It is, yeah, so it's specific to areas where they
wouldn't typically have access to food.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
So it's really.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Providing that access for families. And it's title one low
income schools specifically, and just so everyone would know, a
low income school is a family of four living with
thirty thousand dollars a year or less.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
You're trying to make things better, but are you or
things getting worse? Is this becoming a more difficult situation
to navigate with this?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
With this food and security, it's actually a perfect time.
So there's a lot of changes regarding budget in the
school district right now of twenty twenty five. As most
people know, there are a lot of resources that are
being taken away, and so through our connections and our
our own resources, we're able to come in and provide
that food supply and access. So it'll essentially feed four

(02:15):
hundred families a month. They each come in and get
a full bag of groceries at about one hundred and
fifty dollars a bag, and it's totally donated to them.
They pick out what they know how to cook and
they take it home for the week.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
It's very impactful and Aubry it sounds like a way
that listeners could help right now is with the upcoming
second annual Alliance Cup and the Lions Project Country Concert,
which both sound like a really really fun event that's.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Tamely so excited. And so this is June twenty sixth
at Arrowhead Golf Club and we'll do Colorado's first ever
actually golf tournament with a country concert. So same day,
same venue, it's golf starting at two and then we'll
do our concert at seven pm. And we're bringing in
an individual. He's amazing, but he's from Nashville and it
is pretty well known in Nashville. Just signed with the

(02:58):
record label. But he's coming out with his band. His
name is Jake Matthew and we're very excited.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
I mean it's always comes down to two dollars in support.
But how much does an event like this, how much
do you hope to raise or to get people at
least awhere active to know about what you're doing in
your mission.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, I mean ideally we would love to fund another
market with this event. So if we could do that,
maybe two markets, we'd want to bring in about seventy grand.
And so we're always looking for sponsors and donors to
come out, and we have quite a few right now
that are coming out to support. So tickets are super
affordable thirty bucks for the country concert and then if

(03:34):
you want to get a foursome, twelve hundred and we
cover our costs and give back.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Where does the concert take place? Is it also on
the golf course. It's on the golf course.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, and so it's kind of at the very top,
and so all the guests, which will our capacity there
will be about four hundred just to keep it nice
and family friendly, and it'll be right at the very top,
and so you have that backdrop of the mountains and
those red rocks, and.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
It'll be beautiful with educating people about your event and
about food and security. What do you think people don't
understand maybe about food and security, or maybe have a
misconception about.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Well, I think a lot of people, especially when you're
living here in Denver, you don't realize that it's a really,
really big problem. So in Denver Public Schools, which is
the largest school district in the state, more than seventy
five percent of those schools are considered low income. And
so what people don't also get is you could say
that but you don't really understand the complexity of it.
But it's kids who are literally coming to school without shoes,

(04:28):
They don't have proper sleep at night, they don't have jackets,
they don't have definitely no food. I mean they rely
on the food that's provided at school, and so typically
you're looking at breakfast and lunch and then they go
home and they have nothing. And so if we can
come in and give them essentially that third meal of
the day, I mean, that's huge. They can learn better
and they stay well. It's just a very very impactful.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Do you have the specifics of how far a donation
could go if you give x amount, this is what
it could do for a family in need.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
We kind of structure it with business partners. So if
we had ten business partners at three hundred dollars a month,
we'd be able to fully fund one trailer. And that's
keeping it fully operating, secure, having the food in there
five days a week.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
It's a lot.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, So one hundred and fifty dollars a bag one
hundred families a week, and then that's open all the
time for them, including summer, which is super important because
the summer months they don't typically have anything.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, I can say they're not probably at school or something.
Exactly where do people need to go? Where would you
want to send them so they can learn more about
the project, the event you have coming up, and where
they can possibly help.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, So if you go to our website, the Lionproject
dot org and just our event section, you'll be able
to see everything about our upcoming events. We have also
a large fundraiser in October, but you could see everything
all the information, and then in our about section just
on our landing page, you can see everything that we're
focused on for twenty twenty five and the year's coming.

(05:47):
So it's going to be a big mission.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Line Project's director development and operations that is Aubrey Fowler.
You can hear our whole conversation with Aubrey on koacolorader
dot com. The Lion's Cup and Country Concert going to
be taking place June twenty six at Arrowhead Golf Club
in Littletown
