Speaker 1 (00:04):
The time has opened for the full drum intro. It's
a song that just grabbed you by the throat. Music
legend Rick Darringer passed away yesterday at the age of
seventy seven, and.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Joining us now on the KWA Commons Spirit Health Hotline
to talk more about it. Broncos a color analyst and
host of The Rick Lewis Show on one oh three
five The Fox. It's Rick Lewis.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Rick.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
I mean, I want to say it's great to talk
to you again, but I realized that we haven't talked
to you in a while, which means we haven't had
a lot of rockers pass away anytime soon.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah, I was just thinking that it's I'd spent several
months since we had a dead rock star to talk about,
and it's great to be on with you guys this morning.
You just played a little rock and roll ho Chiku.
That song still one of my all time favorite rock hits,
and that was a huge hit in nineteen seventy three
for Rick Darringer. He wrote that and recorded it. That

(00:55):
song was also recorded by both Edgar Winner and Johnny
Winner before Rick Deridger released that song, but Rick had
the big hit with it. To me, guys, I think
he was underrated. I think he was much better than
people thought as a guitar player. You know, he wasn't
a household name, but he was a guy that played

(01:19):
with a lot of big artists that you've heard of.
And by the way, Rick Deroger wasn't his real name,
speaking of household names, right, He was born Rick Zerringer
in Ohio, and he performed under his real name when
he was with the McCoys. He had a number one
hit with the McCoy's when he was eighteen years old.
But then somehow he changed it to Rick Deriger, which

(01:40):
I always thought was a really cool name. I mean,
that's a badass rockstar name.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah, it was a great name. And you're so right, Rick.
Me mean the people that he performed but played with
he was a session guitarist. I was even going through
some of the credits he had and I was like,
oh my god, I forgot or didn't realize he played
with them then. And I mean he played for with
the rockers of like the Edwinn Group to Barbara streisand
for God's sake.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, that's pretty amazing. Yeah, he was very versatile, And
you mentioned Barbara streisand which is way out of the
realm of rock and roll Hoochie cou He also played
and recorded with Steely Dan Cindy Lapper Uh. He even
shared the stage with a Colorado band called the Rick
Lewis Project a few years. They're pretty underrated from a yeah,

(02:27):
they are also underrated. Yeah, a lot of people feel that. Wad.
Here's a fun fact too about Rick Deringer, you know
which I really noticed when we got the chance to
play with him. He was only five foot four inches tall,
which puts him on all the list of shortest rock
stars in history. By the way. You know, Prince was

(02:48):
five foot three and then there was Rick Deriger at
five foot four. So after Prince and Rick Deringer died,
Angus Young is now the shortest rock star live at
five foot three. Wow. A little fun fact for you,
nice Rick.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
I was also not aware about the connection between Rick
Derenger and Weird Al.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, that is a really strange one too. He produced
all of his albums. I believe he won Grammys too
for Edo and I believe the song fat Yeah. So
that's another thing that Rick Deriger did. He was big
as a producer. I had a really long productive career,
had some health issues the last couple of years and

(03:32):
passed away at seventy seven. We actually tried to book
a show with him last year with another promoter that
I work with here in Colorado, and they were going
to do something like the fiftieth anniversary of Hang On
Sloopy or something like that, and couldn't get him. And

(03:53):
the word was that he was in poor health. And
this was last summer, so obviously he didn't make it
too long. I don't they I don't know what was
going on with him. They didn't disclose a cause of death,
but certainly a guy that I think was much better
than people think as a guitar player.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I agree with you one hundred percent on that. I'll
spare you the sponsorship read and we'll just jump into
the broncos here. I know we're getting into OTAs, but
before we even do that, I want to get your thoughts.
We're going to talk with Dave a little bit about
this in about a half an hour. But the mary
is Thomas being inducted into that Ring of Fame overdue,
and I think this is a great honor for a
late great wide receiver.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, I love DT. He was my favorite player at
the time with the Denver Broncos, and not just a
great player, but a great human being. He really was.
You hear people say that all the time about him
and just his attitude about life. I'll never forget. I
think it was my first year as the color analyst
and the Broncos were losing and DT was hurt at

(04:54):
the time, and we went back in the locker room
to do our postgame interviews and we were all really
dejected because they were on a big losing streak. And
we're sitting there at the door of the locker room
after we did our interviews and Darius Thomas was the
first guy out because he didn't play that day, and
he looked at us, he goes, what's going on, guys,

(05:16):
how come you know? While you guys look so depressed,
while he looks so down, he said, ah, man, it
sucks to lose. And all that. He got this big
smile on his face and man, just keep living. He goes,
this is football, It's just a game. You got to live.
You got to enjoy your life. And I'll never forget
that from him. And I'm paraphrasing what he said, but

(05:38):
that just symbolizes what type of person he was in
the attitude he had about life, and he was so
well balanced that he could put that into perspective and realize, hey,
it's just the game. Life is still good, enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
And the Broncos posted an awesome video of him miked
up at a lot of games saying just that let's
have a day, let's be great, over and over again,
and just the positivity that he had towards the team.
Rick real quick with the minute we have left OTAs
like Marty mentioned, anything that you're on the lookout for,
what fans should be on the lookout for.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
I think my biggest concern going into this season is
the inside linebacker position. I know they got green Law
who is currently injured and he's coming off an injury
as well, and then Alex Singleton the other would be
starting linebacker coming off a serious knee injury. And Alex
Singleton is I think he's probably thirty two years old

(06:33):
now or so. So those two guys, if they're healthy,
we're good. If one of them is not, I think
the Broncos have an issue there at that inside linebacker position.
Other than that, I think the Broncos should have one
of the elite defenses, if not the best defense in
the National Football League. So going into training camp, that's

(06:53):
the position I'm focusing on, to see if the Broncos
will upgrade that in some way, just to give him
a little insurance policy.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Love you, my friend. Thanks for joining us on your
day off.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
We appreciate it absolutely. Guys anytime, loved you guys who
have a great day you as well.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
One of three five of the Foxes, the rick Lewis,
of course, Bronco's color analyst as well.
