Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right now on Colorado's Morning News, President Trump and California
Governor Gavin Newsom are sharply at odds as protests against
immigration and customs enforcement ICE continue in LA and both
are framing their confrontation is not only about the protest
but also in terms of politics. And then yesterday Trump
said it would be a great thing if borders are
Tom Homan arrested. Governor Gavin Newsom joining now in the
(00:21):
ka Common Spirit Health Hotline. ABC News White House correspondent
Karen Travers Karen You pointedly asked the President what crime
the governor has committed to warrant his arrest and what
was his answer to you?
Speaker 2 (00:32):
The President told me yesterday, I think his primary crime
is running for governor because he's done such a bad job.
That was the quote from the President when I asked
him what would warrant Newsom's arrest? After a lot of
back and forth yesterday and the President saying it would
be great if Newsomb were arrested, even Tom Homan his
borders are had pushed back earlier on the idea that
(00:52):
he was actually going to arrest Newsom and the mayor
of Los Angeles, both, of course, are Democrats. Newsom had
said that this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism. To
the comment that the President answered to me, Newsom said
that the president's now admitting he'll arrest the sitting governor
simply because he ran for office.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
Karen, to broaden this out just a little bit, do
you know if there's been any conversations between Governor knew
some the California National Guard, any conversations between if you will,
emissaries between President Trump and Gavin Newsom, between California and
the White House.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
The President talked to Newsom on Friday, but it is
now Tuesday morning, and a lot of coursess happened since then.
That was before the President had issued the order of
the memo calling up the National Guard, before the President
order the deployment of marines yesterday, which was notable because
the President also indicated to me when I asked him
about doing just that, said that things had looked better
(01:47):
and that, you know, we'll see what happens, kind of
signaling that things were on the upswing. But no, there
is no indication of outreach from the President and or
contact between the President and Newsom over the last twenty
four hours.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
You know, we see images in pictures and it probably
really does depend on the media you consume. But Karen,
I know Governor Newsom says things have been for the
most part in control, so has you know, Mayor Bass,
is that the case and is in a sense the
National Guard there to help quell that or in some
ways is Governor Newsom and is Mayor Bass? Are they
(02:19):
concerned that exacerbates potential contract Yes, that's.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Exactly what they were saying yesterday. And you know, it's
not clear exactly what role that the Marines were going
to play in California. There were obviously now we have
hundreds and hundreds of National Guard troops, and even some
of the reporting yesterday that we were doing and some
of the things that Gavin Newsom were saying that this
is so hastily done that the National Guard troops didn't
(02:42):
have anywhere to stay, they didn't have places to sleep
or eat because they were just sent there and it
wasn't coordinated with state and local officials. Newsom. You had
said yesterday about the President when he announced he was
suing the administration, that Trump had flamed the fires and
illegally acted by federalizing the National Guard.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
It's ABC's Karen Travers reporting for us. Thank you, Karen,
