Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Rockies franchise is going to undergo several changes in
their executive leadership team at the end of the year.
Rocky's announcing that president and COOO Greg Feesle will step
down at the end of twenty twenty five, and Vice
president Walker Montfort, the son of Dick, will assume Feesel's
responsibilities in January of twenty twenty six. Feesel has been
remember of the Rockies front office since nineteen ninety five.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit Health hotline
is KWA Rockies Baseball insider and MLB dot Com writer
Thomas Harding. Thomas, thank you so much for your time
as always. Okay, let's start with your initial reaction to
what we saw with the leadership shuffle.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Well, this was something that I've been kind of watching
for a while. Will the Rockies change the way in
which they operate? I mean, when you have two straight
one hundred lost seasons and right now the worst AFT
th eighty one games in history, then you need to
be able to make changes. And so this is beginning.
I'm still waiting for other dominoes to fall here, because
(00:53):
I don't think you just make this change and then
don't do anything else.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Needless to say, there's some skepticism from our listeners on
the text line saying he still has a last name Marnfort.
It's nepotism to some degree. But in fairness, Walker Montfort's
kind of worked his way up through the organization, hasn't he.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Well, yes, he has worked his way through the organization
through various jobs there and listen, well, there's proof and
people are going to think that. And when I did
my story on this yesterday, and I did one, and
I think Patrick's owners of the Denver Post, also Montfort
was very upfront about it. Hey, the way this looks
on the outside, I get it, people are going to
(01:31):
think it's nepotism. However, I am here, I'm going to
figure out new things. And I do know just from
being around a team, and I don't know Walker very well,
but it seems that he has some maybe ideas that
are different from what his dad had. And I think
that if his dad weren't bored with the fact that
they need to change, I don't think this move would
(01:53):
have been made.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
What do you think some of those first courses of
action could be for Walker? I know you say that
it may be unaware of what that may be. He
says he has changes, but what could he bring to
the table.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Well, I think that the things that he is definitely
defined about looking outside and trying to study teams that
are in similar markets that have done better. I think
that's a good change. The question is what do they
change within the organization. I know if from talking to
him he didn't want to he didn't want to telegraph
(02:26):
any moves. The things that I think should happen. This
organization is a little light, just personnel wise, whether it's
preparing for games, whether it's scouting other teams, whether it's
scouting teams to prepare for your own games. It just
seems like it's a little bit light. Also in a
coaching aspect, maybe some more support for the guys, whether
(02:47):
it's more coaches at the lower level, a lot of
internal things that teams that aren't in the biggest markets.
That's how you win games at the margins. Maybe you're
a little bit more prepared for than the other team.
And I know that there are folks on the inside
that have talked about this. So those are the things
I want to see happen. I want to see them
bring in some new ideas from outside. But I do
(03:09):
think that because this is such a unique atmosphere, it
can't be a total house cleaning because you set back
your organization several years.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Thomas final question, you alluded to it. What other dominoes
or changes do you think you will see?
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I don't know. I'm going to get this some time
and look at it here. I mean, I think that
the structure of the front office is going to have
to change, and like I say, I think there will
have to be additions from the outside. Will it be
someone at the top running this thing? That may be something.
Should there be someone alongside Walker Montford on the baseball
(03:43):
side of this, I think that would really be helpful.
But those are the things that I see, But I'm
not sure Walker Momford when we did talk to him,
he didn't talk about increasing a whole lot of budgets.
He says, we have the resources to do what we
need to do. I want to see that.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
