Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Governor's office launching a survey for Colorado's to have
their voices heard on the COEO one fifty Colorado one
to fifty walkway, and the results will help determine if
the project moves forward. There are a lot of passionate
differing opinions on the proposed bridge, especially about the twenty
eight point five million dollar price tag. And joining us
now on the ka Commas Spirit of Health hotline is
Jennifer OReGO Charles, executive director of the Colorado Preservation Inc. Organization,

(00:24):
is in opposition to the walkway. Jennifer, thanks for coming
on Colorado's Morning News.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
All right, thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Jennifer, What is your main reason for not liking the
idea of this one to fifty walkway?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well, certainly, Colorado Preservation Inc. Support celebrating Colorado one hundred
and fiftieth anniversary. This is an amazing milestone that you know,
there are different ways already going on throughout the state
where this is celebrated. We're just thinking that the design
that we've seen of the Capitol Walkway bridge really disrupts this.

(00:56):
It's the Civic Center is a National Historic Landmark, which
is the high level of recognition that our country gives
to places of.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Shared national importance.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
And when we're talking about this bridge and the winding
pathway that it takes, it really disrupts the symmetry the
site lines, the formal relationship between government buildings and public
gathering spaces that really define this space.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
So it's more of the design and the aesthetic than
even say the price tag or the necessity or lack
thereof of it.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You know, there's certainly a lot of different factors that
come into play, you know, being fiscally responsible. You know,
this walkway we've seen is looking to cost about eighteen
million dollars, you know, is that the right thing for
Colorado to be spending money on right now? While all
these cuts are in place, We certainly have concerns over that.
You know, we've heard that it needs to be ADA accessible.

(01:46):
We believe that site already is ADA accessible. So from
our perspective, you know, there are a lot of reasons
why they shouldn't move forward, but the one that we're
primarily focused on is the overall design of the project.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Jennifer, did the governor or the governor office reached out
to you about this idea in anyway we saw early on.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
A very early maybe five minutes presentation before anything was
officially finalized. But we haven't been involved in any official meetings.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Was that presentation anything like you see the design is now?

Speaker 3 (02:20):
It was?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
It was similar. It was a very early look at
what they were planning. You know, they were talking about
using local materials and you know, taking the design of
the river and incorporating that into the overall design, which
you know, they certainly incorporated elements.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
That are tied to Colorado.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
The mountains, the winding river.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
But really, when we look at the context of this
important physically designed landscape, those aren't the features that should
be highlighted in this space.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
The governor shared with us on Colorado's Morning News that
part of the reason for this obviously to celebrate the
one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of US as a statewo
hundred and fiftieth as a country. Your organization, Colorado Preservation, Inc.
I would imagine, what what if you're not a fan
of this? Are there better ways to recognize the heritage
and history of our country and of Colorado.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Of course, And you know Colorado has quite a few
things already going on. Each community has focused on celebrating
different stories of Colorado throughout and again we're not against
you know, celebrating this in Denver, obviously that's an important
place to do it. What we would encourage them to
do is again, take a look at that design, really

(03:33):
look if it makes sense based on the guidelines that
are already in place for that space, and what about
incorporating it into the fifty two to eighty trail that's
been approved already. You know, I know they had a
real large call for artists, and that's a big part
of this installation, But you can incorporate that art and storytelling.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
And ideas and other ways throughout Denver, other ways.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
That are already being planned and money is already being
committed to.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Is there any thing with that walkway that could be
different or changed or if you want to say fit
in better to the to the architecture and the things
that you like about how things are now, that would
would get you to change your mind or change your position.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
On this, I would say, take a look at the
design guidelines that that park. Because it is a National
Historic Landmark space, there are certain requirements and any new
designs that are put in place, So I would go
back and take a look at those requirements and incorporate
those into the news.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Sign and in wrapping up with you, then do you
think you'll be consulted on further projects or anything like
this as we approach the one hundred and fifteth birthday
of Colorado and two hundred and fifty of the country.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Of course, yes, that's one of the things that our
organization does. We, you know, provide comments and feedback to
any project that is happening, not only in the city
but the state of Colorado. So please reach out to us.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
And we would love to be involved.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Executive Director of Colorado Preservation INK, Jennifer Origo Charles. Thanks Jennifer,
