Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gina Gondeck Marty Lenz on Colorado's Morning News. Denver's new
professional women's soccer team officially has a name of Denver
Summit FC. But with the naming of one team comes
the renaming of another Colorado sports team.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
The Colorado Summit, which is Colorado's professional Ultimate frisbee team,
decided to relinquish its name to the Soccer League Expansion
club and we'll soon be looking for a new name
and joining us now in the Kawa Common Spirit Health hotline,
owner of the Colorado Summit Ultimate Frisbee Team at sal Pace, Sal,
I appreciate you joining us here on Colorado's Morning News.
How did the conversation go? When did they approach you
(00:33):
about the name? Tell us how that worked.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
It was a really positive conversation. Rob Cohen, who is
the majority owner of the soccer team, reached out probably
oh probably five months ago, and he started off by saying, Hey,
(00:58):
let's talk about how we can collaborate to grow sports
in Colorado and it just went on from there.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Sall, I want to take a step back first because
some people may be hearing about the Colorado Summit Ultimate
Frisbee Team for the first time, so tell us a
little bit about the team, how that was created, and
where your games take place.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, so we play in the Ultimate Frisbee Association. It's
a twenty four team, twenty four city national league. Couple
teams in Canada from Montreal to San Diego and everything
(01:45):
in between. Across the United States, every major city has
a team, the Colorado Summit. We just wrapped up our
fourth regular season and we play at Colorado School of Minds,
the Marv K Stadium in downtown Golden It's it is
(02:10):
the most beautiful college football stadium in the United States.
It's nasled with mountains all around, and we just wrapped
up a regular season. We go into the playoffs starting
this Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Hey, I wanted to ask when when rob Con, when
they approached you, what are you getting for trading the name?
Was there an investment in you some money for you guys?
What are you getting for relinquishing the name?
Speaker 3 (02:39):
No, nothing like that. It's just a collaboration between two teams.
You know. For instance, they're going to be helping us
with with the rebranding and the renaming competition. We're discussing
playing halftime games, showcase games at their stadium. The next
(03:05):
few years during their soccer games. And you know, most
importantly for us, it's about supporting the new women's soccer team,
the first pro women's sports team in Colorado history.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
And just like the football club, now, the Colorado Summit
is launching that fan led naming contest. Like I mentioned,
tell fans how they can participate.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, so fans can go to our website that's the
Coloradosummit dot com and they can fill out our survey
or make suggestions and we're gonna see what comes out
of it, you know. And yesterday we had over three
hundred people in our first day of announcing the contest
(03:58):
respond One of the lucky fans who choose the ultimately
winning name will receive a replica jersey with the name
of the team that they have select on.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
It sounds like a cool thing. Great, Thanks Sal for
telling us about your club, the ultimate frisbee team, and
we appreciate you coming on with us. Colorad is some
ultimate frisbee team. Owner of the team at sal Pace.
Thanks Sal.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Thanks guys,
