Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Colorado's Morning news.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Rockies making a move with trading their third basement
to the New York Yankees for two pitching prospects, lefty
Griffin Herring and righty Josh Gross. Ryan McMahon was viewed
as one of the top available positional players on the market.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Shinning us now on the KWA Comment Spirit Health Hotline
with more on this and other Rockies news. Is Rockies
writer for MLB dot Com. It's Thomas Harding. Thomas, thank
you so much for your time. As always our baseball
fanatics Chad Bauer joining us on this interview as well.
Your initial reaction when you heard about the trade going
on with Ryan McMahon.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Well, I knew there were a number of third basement
on the market. I mean you had a Heineo Suarez
of the Diamondbacks and you also had Brian Hayes of
the Pirates. So these teams that were looking for third basement,
there were several of them. I know they scouted very
heavily Ryan McMahon, and the feeling I got was he
(00:53):
just fit the Yankees better than maybe some of the
other teams like the Cubs of the Mariners. A lot
of it had to do with him a left handed hitter.
In the Yankee stadium, a few of those fly balls
do fly out of that place. As for the Yankees,
I know people have looked at Ryan McMahon for years,
but I think there were two issues that slowed things down.
Number One, the Rockies wanted more than one player, and
(01:15):
earlier on teams did not want to give up that player,
and a lot of may have had to do a salary.
Ryan has owed about thirty four point two million for
the rest of his contract. The Yankees were willing to
give up two prospects and pay that money. So I
think that that also helped the Rockies with so flexibility
in the future.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
So, Thomas, with the trade deadline coming up, there are
a few names that are out there that the Rockies
are thought to our trading. Who do you think is
most likely to be traded? And give us a name
of somebody maybe under the radar that might be moved
that we might be surprised by.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Well, I think that when you look at what teams
are looking for, I know a lot of teams have
centered on their younger arms, but I think two guys
that I think would go simply because of their experience
are Tyler Kinley, who's pitching really well right now, and
Jake Byrd, who had an excellent beginning of the season
has had some hiccups lately. But a lot of the
(02:14):
scouts that watch the Rockies, I don't think that they
believe that Jake bird Is, you know, has completely fallen off.
It's just one of the things that happens with relief pitchers. Now,
I have something coming up today and our own Mark
find San mentioned this in his notebook last night, that
teams are asking about Kyle Freeland, who's one of the
(02:34):
obviously a Denver native and really wants to be with
the Rockies. I think the Rockies want him, But if
you look at where the Rockies are right now, are
they going to win by the time that his contract
is up in I think it's twenty six with a
club option for twenty seven. I'm sorry, it's a vesting
option where if he pitches X number of innings then
(02:56):
he'll get that twenty twenty seven. Well, the ROI before then,
I'm not sure, and I know that they would rather
win with him, but really get them there faster if
they were to give him up. I'm not sure that
it's going to happen, but it is something that's been
talked about. And what I'm writing in my newsletter which
will be out today, is that the only untouchable on
(03:19):
this team is Ezekiel Tovar at the shortstop.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
I want to get to him in a moment.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
But I've got to ask, and this is less analytical
and more emotional, how should we feel as Rockies fans
when we see moves like this?
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Because the losing has been so frequent in recent years,
I think you have to step back and say, hey,
it's not working right now. You've got to do something
to help in the future. It's not just the players.
I mean when you have a good player like Ryan McMahon,
obviously the fans want to keep him around and so
does the team. But if you trade him and you
(03:54):
save that money, isn't there a chance that you can
get another veteran type player, maybe even just you hate
to chase bad money with good money. But they brought
in Chris Bryant as a former star feeling like, hey,
this guy whatever he can give. Obviously they still felt
he was a good player, but they thought he could
help lead this team well because he hasn't been on
(04:17):
the field, there hasn't really been much leading, and just
from talking to folks. You had Ryan McMahon who was
a very good leader in that clubhouse. But before him,
you had Charlie Blackman, who had been an All Star,
one of the top players in the game. And players
really gravitated to that because a lot of the younger
guys and they're getting younger all the time, they admired
(04:38):
him growing up. So when they were able to talk
to Charlie Blackman, I think it helped him. They haven't
really had that with Chris Bryant because he hasn't been available.
Maybe they don't need to pay one hundred and eighty
two million dollars, but maybe they need somebody like that
to help this younger group.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Thomas, let's go back to Tovar real quick. You say
he's untouchable.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Tell us a little bit about his successes and why
he's so essential to the Rockies.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Well, the Rockies did sign them to a long contract,
and he's one of the best shortstops in this game.
I mean, if you go back and look at last season,
the home runs he hit and also winning his first
go glove, and he was just barely twenty three years old.
That is a star in the making, and they signed
him to a below market, below market value contract. Not
(05:26):
only that, but he seems to have an effect on
other folks. I mean, he is going to turn twenty
four in August, but it's almost like having a thirty
year old in there. And as he told me once,
I married at a young age, had children at a
young age. Maybe that's maybe mature faster. Also, he was
twelve years old in Venezuela when he moved to the
(05:48):
Dominican Republic. There was a sports agent that had a
group there, a group of players, and the Rockies I
think saw him at age thirteen. So in a lot
of ways, he's had to grow up very quick quickly,
and it shows around that team. It's nice to have
a guy like that on your team and with the
ability when he's healthy, that's fine. He wasn't healthy at
the start of the year. Since he's come back, he's
(06:10):
done quite well with that team.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
And Thomas saw when McMahon left, they brought up a
prospect warming Bernabelle had a great first game home run.
Who else could we see as far as prospects go,
and will it include the rockies number one overall prospect
Charlie Condon.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
I don't think Charlie Condon yet. I mean he's in
Double A right now and it's very good now. If
he goes on a complete tear, that's fine. But what
he has done, if you recall he was injured in
spring training. He was actually injured right after the draft
and the Rockies discovered this and he kind of ended
his season last year. But he had a hand injury
(06:47):
in spring training, so he started about six weeks or
so late. He looks pretty good right now, and I
went to see him with the Hartford team. What he's
doing is concentrating on just being a good He set
some records with home runs in college, but I think
that he is actually smartly building himself up. Guys that
(07:09):
we could see. Could we see Kyle Carros, the son
of Eric Carroll's the longtime Dodger. He's playing third base
in Triple A right now. He's a guy I'm pretty
excited about actually. And the two prospects that we've already
seen but you want them to do better are Chase
Dolander and Zach Vian, both at Triple A. Zach Vien
(07:31):
went down. He struggled up here. He had an injury
that they made sure that they gave him a few
weeks to take care of. He's playing really well there
and I do want to see him get a run
of playing time here. Chase Dolander, he had fifteen starts
of the Majors. Struggled a bit. You could see the potential,
but you could also see him missing on a lot
of pitches. He's actually at the Performance Land in Scottsdale
(07:55):
kind of working on some things. They're going to get
him back into the triple A rotation this week. So
those are the Those are guys I want to see.
I know they're not brand new, but they're a big
part of the Rockies future if they do pan out.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Rockies writer for MLB dot Com it's Thomas Harding. Thank you.
