Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Colorado's Morning News. Marty Lenz, Ginigandek. Good morning.
It's the first day of public entry for the BMW
Championship at Castle Pines in Castle Rock, where fans of
the sport can witness the top fifty players competing for
twenty million dollars in prize money.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Yeah, today's just.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
A practice round, but the event will be running through
Sunday and is expected to draw tens of thousands of
spectators joining us now on the KWA Commons Spirit Health Hotline.
Now is senior vice President of Tournaments for at the
Western Golf Association.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
It's Vince Pellegrino. Vince, thank you so much for your
time this morning.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
Of course, it's a beautiful morning and the gates are
open here at Castle Pines and we're excited.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Absolutely, it's going to be a great week of weather
for some golf as well and for spectators alike. And
it's new and exciting or at least brought back to
the Colorado area in quite some time.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
What does it mean to be at Castle Pines.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
This year, Well, it means a lot to us. You know,
it was ten years since we had the championship at
Cherry Hills, and we're back in Colorado and the golf
fans are a rabbit bunch and they they're gonna come
out in droves this week. And you know, it's it's
nice to have the top fifty professionals in the world
(01:08):
right in the backyard here. And really what it's all
about is us raising money for charity. We all proceeds
of the Championship will benefit the Evan scholars Foundation, which
is the charity of the tournament. So come out and
see great golf, but know that it's going to go
towards a great cause as well.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Vince. I know a few people are familiar with with
Castle Pines the golf course. How many of the golfers
have ever played the course before?
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Two there's two players who have played, you know back
in the international days. You know, several have played the course,
just not in competition. So I think there's gonna be
a little bit of a you know, feeling out process.
They just came from Memphis, which where is where the
first round of the playoffs was and so you know,
coming out here to the altitude, I think they're gonna,
(01:51):
you know, have a little bit of adjusting to do.
And and you know how far does my pitching wedge go?
How far you know, does my driver go? You know,
with the with the thin air, and you know, quite frankly,
it's a good walk out here. So I think it'll
be a physical test as well.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
How does Castle Pines get ready for an event like.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
This, Well, you know, I'm looking at the golf course
right now, and they've just done an amazing job getting
the golf course ready. I mean that's the most important part.
But outside of that, you know, really helping us with
the community, really making sure that all the players and
the caddies and all the constituents are taken care of
their championship week. A lot of planning goes into us.
(02:29):
We've been planning for over two years for the championship,
so they're an incredible partner of the Western Golf Association.
Castle Pines members are a lot of members volunteering and
helping out this week, so it's really exciting for us.
But we have an incredible partnership with the club, not
only to host this championship, but to raise money for
the Evans scholars Foundation as well.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
I know that the golf fans here in Coloradore excited
about having a tour like this, of course come through
our courses. I'm guessing though from what I've seen some
of the few things here and there, the players are
excited about playing this as well.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
You know they are. We had a lot of players
show up. Usually they'll trickle in on a Monday. I
think they were genuinely excited to get here. I had
a couple of guys show up and just said, boy,
this place is beautiful. H it doesn't get any better
than this with the backdrop of the mountains. So I
think they're actually really excited to be here. Now. Obviously
they're excited because they've they've moved on past the first
round of the playoffs. They're making into the top fifty
(03:23):
guarantees of them the signature events next year on the
PGA Tour, so it's a big deal for them to
be here.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Maybe it's also the excitement of being there, but also
the excitement of getting adjusted to the altitude.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Like you mentioned, it.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Might be nice to get there and get acclimated a
little bit earlier as possible events. When it comes to
the fans as well, it looks like there's already a
ton of sold out tickets for the weekend but what
do they need to know if they're planning to attend
this week?
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Yeah, sure, sure it has sold out. Grounds, tickets are
sold out. I think we've got a few individual hospitality
opportunities left over the weekend. We've got Thursday tickets available.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
I think the most.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Important thing is to plan ahead, you know, figure out
where you're going to park ahead of time. We certainly
have rides share, we have parking. You've got to reserve
that in advance. I think you just have to allow
extra time to get to the golf course. There's going
to be some traffic. You know. The parking is pretty convenient,
located pretty close to the golf course, but it is
(04:21):
you know, I mean, it's a tough golf course to
walk around, and so I think you want to make
sure that you wear comfortable shoes and you know, pick
out a spot. There's some great viewing areas on the
golf course, natural amphitheaters to watch some incredible golf.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
In wrapping up with you, you've kind of touched on it.
Talk about the charity, because this is a fun event,
this is something that's important for the golfers, But talk
about the other mission that's important as well with the charity.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah, sure, it's the Evan scholars Foundation. And as mentioned,
all the proceeds benefit the scholarship fund, and it's a
Caddy scholarship fund. I receive the scholarship myself. So essentially,
as we send close to twelve hundred kids to college
on full tuition and housing scholarships, so kids with limited
(05:05):
financial needs, limited financial means, that have great grades, that
have caddied for a minimum of two years can apply
for the scholarship. And we've got twenty four different universities
across the country that we send kids to. It's really
a life changing opportunity. A lot of them wouldn't be
able to attend a university like Colorado at Boulder but
for the Evans scholars Scholarship. So it's a life changing
(05:28):
opportunity and we're happy to share that with the you know,
with with Colorado and the fact that if you attend
the Championship or buy merchandise or concessions or a ticket,
or volunteer at all benefits to charity.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Find more information at BMW Championship dot com. Senior vice
President of Tournaments for the Western Golf Association, it's Vince Pelgreno,
thank you so much for your time this morning.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Thank you so much. Appreciate you having me on
