Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gina Gondek, Marty Lenz, and Chad Bauer joining us here
on Colorado's Morning News. Well, the Rockies lost last night,
but have won four out of the five games. So
what are they doing different or better?

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Ought to be time to ask here on the Kwa
Koma Spirit Health Hotline. Voice of the Rockies is Jack Corgan. Okay, Jack,
let's start there. What are the Rocks doing better and
getting right this these last few games?

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Well, Marty, I think last night was the exception, but
I think they have gotten some better starting pitching. That
has always been a challenge this year. Between injuries and
an underperformance, that has been a challenge at times for
the Rockies. But really since the All Star break, you know,

(00:44):
they've played thirty games since the All Star break and
they're fourteen and sixteen. Not that that's going to win
you a World Series, but compared to the way they
played at the beginning half of the year, a strong
improvement for sure.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Now, Jack, some of that, we've been seeing a lot
of the young players being brought up from the miners
with the current situation, you know, Caros Bernabille and so
what is this showing, you know, for the for management
for the future of the team with a performance of
some of these young guys right.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Now, Yeah, I think they are certainly happy with how
the young guys are playing, Chad. I mean the Rockies
right now, they're the second youngest roster in baseball, and
I think part of the offensive success has been sparked
by guys like Caros and Bernabille just because of their

(01:42):
approach at the plate. I mean, you think of the
guys who played first and third for most of the
of the season in Ryan McMahon and Michael Tolia, and Ryan,
you know, has had been a very good player for
the Rockies through a number of seasons, but had had

(02:06):
a lot of strikeouts in his offensive game, and Michael
Tolly has certainly had that. These two guys, Kerols and
Burnabell are doing a great job of drawn walks, you know,
putting the ball in play, extending at bats. Those are
the things that I think are going to be key

(02:27):
for this team going forward. And so when you have
that and other young guys like Freeman and you know,
we also forget Ezekiel Tovart missed sixty three games and oh,
by the way, he just turned twenty four. He seems
like he's been around for a while. It has been
three years, but he's still one of the younger guys

(02:48):
on the team.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Also, going forward, let's take a closer look at management here, Jack,
any thoughts on Warren Shaeffer becoming the permanent manager or
is it still too early to tell?

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah? I think think there's a couple of factors into that, Gina.
I mean, I think Warren's done a nice job in
terms of getting after the things that I think the
Rockies need to be proficient at to have a chance
to have some consistent success, and the players have responded

(03:23):
well to him. I think he is closing in on
deserving that opportunity. I think the final forty six games
that we have is going to be part of that
decision making. And then the bigger issue is will Walker
Montford taking over as kind of the president of the team,

(03:46):
if you will. As we move into the offseason, are
they going to make any front office changes in terms
of general manager or some other places. And if they do,
will the new people coming in want to keep warn
or will they want their own person? I think those

(04:06):
are the things that factor into it. I think what
I've seen so far shape deserves a shot at being
the permanent guy. We'll just have to see how the
rest of the year plays out.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
And some of their top prospects have been playing well
down in the minors Hartford specifically, Are we going to
see any more of the top prospects, you know, unless
there's an injury, or do you think they'll wait till
next spring to bring some of them up, like Charlie
Condon and such.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, you know, that's a good question, Chad. I think
Charlie Condon, Jared Thomas is another good young player. I
think there's still hope for Zach Bean's potential, but I
think in terms of the position guys without an injury,
I think it's less likely. I do perhaps a young

(05:02):
pitcher like Gabriel Hughes might be somebody that gets a
shot before the year is out. They've brought up a
lot of kids, and for the most part, they've performed
pretty well. I think they're building competition, which is good,
and creating the chance with some of them to be
able to maybe make a trade to get something that

(05:24):
they that they need that they don't have in the organization.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Final question, Jack, I mean, this is a compliment you've
forgotten more baseball than most people know. You get a
chance to see again. I know you've seen before, but
seeing Shoe Otani play tonight, pitch, hit do all that?
Are we seeing just a remarkable talent that we haven't
seen in decade years? Maybe is it too soon to
say this guy is Ruthian in the way he plays.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I you know, I'm very anxious to see him pitch
tonight at cors Field. It'll be the first time that
Otani pitches in Denver. You know, if he play, if
he stays healthy and plays at this kind of level
through the remaining eight years at this contract, I mean,
we're talking about a baseball unicorn. You have to go

(06:12):
back to Ruth and maybe even beyond Ruth in terms
of a guy who can do what he has demonstrated
for a while now offensively and then pitch as well
as the rest of the great pitchers in the game. Yeah,
that's something unique.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Voice of the Rockies, it's Jack Corgan. Thanks Jet.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
All right, guys, good talking with you.
