Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yea.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
I'm Chad Bauer in for Marty and Geena today. Colorado
State University opens their final season in the Mountain West
Conference with a road game against Big Ten opponent Washington
tomorrow night in Seattle. Our Marty Lance caught up with
CSU's head coach Jay Norvell about the upcoming season and
the growth of the program in year four under the
coaches leadership.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Coach, it's year four at Colorado State. What is different
between year one and year four? I'm sure there's a lot,
But what can you point to now? What can you
point to now in year four?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Three?
Speaker 1 (00:31):
The year one? It's like it's like what's different between.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
The moon and.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Earth? I mean, no, there's a lot different from our
first year, and no, I just think we've been constantly
working to build a roster that's full of really competitive players,
guys with high character, and guys that are like minded
like our coaching staff. We got so many high character
players that really value winning and that's really important to
(01:01):
us here and it's really fun to practice, to play
and compete with this roster. I mean, these are the
kids that we've identified and brought in and they all
have amazing qualities. I think one of the biggest things
about this group is that we brought in twenty nine
transfer players. We got some a new freshman class. But
the kids that we brought in are so humble and
(01:23):
so hungry and have connected so well together. It is
just a joy to work with them every day. And
this has been the best training camp I've ever had
with this group. And this is very possibly my most
talented team that I've ever had.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
What has changed for you between first year and fourth
year as a coach? What do you do do anything differently?
How viewabold Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:45):
I got it. I could write a book on that.
You know, in the last three years have been probably
the most volatile in college football history. So when I
took this job, nil really hadn't kicked up yet. The
transfer portal was there. But for the last three years
we've had to deal with that building roster in the
transfer portal Era nil era, and you know, it's been
(02:09):
a challenge. We've had to really be creative on how
we go about things, and it's a much different way
of going about it than when I was at Nevada.
So when I left Nevada, I had the best receivers
in the conference, I had three NFL starters on my team.
Ever since we've been here in Colorado State, I've lost
eight starters at receiver in three years. So it's been
(02:30):
very difficult to do the same things that we did
at Nevada as far as the air raid, and it's
just not the same. People didn't really understand when we
ran the ball last year a little bit more. We
lost two receivers in the portal and then Tory got
hurt and our tight end was hurt. That really changed
our playmakers on the perimeter and we had to kind
(02:52):
of be creative and figure out how we could win
games with that team. I just think in this day
and age, you have to be verse, You have to
be able to switch gears as a coach, and it
puts pressure on you to figure out how ways to
win with the players that you have.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Coach, I think you said once with the way the
direction that college football is now, and you mentioned this before,
you don't only have to recruit new guys. You got
to re recruit the guys you have. Is that becoming
though a little easier now because of they see what's
being built at Colorado State.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
I think the big thing that players are realizing. When
it NIL first started the last couple of years, I
think players were just looking for the money and opportunity
to make some money. But I think they're realizing that
that's not always the best decision for them. Still, the
most important thing to college athletes is opportunity. The opportunity
(03:49):
to play, the opportunity to show the world what you
can do as a player, and to be matched up
with coaches that really have your best interests in mind
that can help develop you as a player. You want
to be on a great campus, you want to play
in good facilities. All those things matter, and those are
things that we have here at Calbado State. We've really
(04:10):
sold those and we're getting a great response, and our
recruiting classes have been very good. We just had three
players make NFL rosters, and two of those players were
transfer players from Division two schools. Dom Jones was from
North Dakota State. He made it with the Browns, and
then Drew Moss was a tackle from Lamar who was
(04:31):
a great player for us. It just made the forty
nine ers. And then of course Tory Horton. So we're
identifying the right type of kids, kids with great character
and toughness and want to be a part of a
winning program, and we'll continue to do that. And I
think we have several NFL players in this group of
kids that we brought in last year.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
You feel this might be the best roster you've had
in talent. What should expectations be? I know coaches don't
always like that question, but what do you honestly expect?
What we expect as fans. This is the year we
make a run at the conference title. The last year
in the Mountain West.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
We feel like we'll be much better than last year.
And I think this team is more experienced. We have
talent at critical positions. We only have one returning starter
on defense, but we have a lot of talent on defense.
Four of our captains were players that are on the
defensive side, and so it just shows you the respect
(05:28):
that our team has for those players. Our goal is
to advance of the championship game and play the championship game.
We'd love to have that at Kanvas Stadium. I mean,
those are our goals and we're not going to back
off from that. Colorida State won the first mount West championship.
We'd like to play and win the last one. We're
excited about that opportunity and looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
That's CSU head coach Jay norvel the Rams and Washington game.
It's nine pm kickoff tomorrow. You can watch it on
the Big ten network.
