Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gina Gondeck and Marty Lenz on Colorado's Morning News. Well,
it looked like the Broncos were on their way to
being two and zero, but an interception by Bonix giving
the Colts new life and a penalty onymous Indie field goal,
giving Indy he had another chance, this time in making
that game winning forty five yard field goal as time expired,
beating the Broncos twenty nine to twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Joining us now in the KWA Commas Spirit of Health Hotline,
Radio color analyst, Broncos host and a course host of
the Rick Luis Show on one of three five of
the Fox, It is Rick Lewis a little bleary eyed
this morning, but.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Glad to have you here. Are my eyes even open? Now? Yeah?
They are?
Speaker 2 (00:32):
I mean really, speaking of open eyes, I want to
get your first thoughts on that leverage play you saw
in real time?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
What did you guys think?
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Uh, we couldn't even tell from the replay that there
was any major violation. I thought that was a strange call.
And that's that's a call they rarely make in the NFL.
And it probably happens. What you saw happen on that
play probably happens on a lot of field goal attempts
(00:58):
and extra point attempts, So I thought that was a
strange time to call that when it meant winning a
game or losing a game. And we were pretty confused
by the whole thing. And I don't know what you
do with that.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Man.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
It was a crushing defeat, crushing defeat for this team
and fans too, because you had the game won and
then twenty seconds later you didn't. And that seesaw was
pretty intense. I know I felt it after the game.
I felt like I got kicked in the nuts after
the game. It's a horrible feeling.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
It's like the ABC actum, right, the thrill of victory
and the agony defeat and literally with you yes, split
second time right.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It was a.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Horrible feeling and I couldn't shake it for a while,
even on the plane flying home, and you just felt
like this heavy feeling hanging over you. And I'm sure
the players and especially coach Peyton felt the same thing.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
But you got to get over it.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
You got another game coming up, and this one's a
really tough game in LA against a good Charters team.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Rick.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Before we get to that, I mean, I think Dave
Logan said postgame that that call, that leverage call averages
maybe three times per season, and it was just something
that you don't see all the time.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yep. And that's a big maybe too.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
By the way, Yeah, when you google that, how many
times is that leverage play called? You will have a
hard time getting an answer. It's rarely called.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Let's move past it because it's going to just cause
all of the just frustration of what took place there
and say, did it need to get to that point?
Were there times where we looked back at other moments
of the game and said it shouldn't have gotten to
that last leverage call.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Point, that's a good point.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Broncos could have won that game a couple of times
and should have won that game a couple of times.
Bo Nicks played a really good game with three touchdown passes.
They got the running game going bo Nicks and the
running game successful, but they couldn't stop the Colts. That
was the biggest surprise I think to me and probably
(03:09):
fans is the defense just did not look good against
Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor the running back.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
They got humbled the d in many ways. They certainly
did because all we've ever heard about. I shouldn't say all,
but we've talked about this D is going to be great.
And it's not just us local folks, it's the national
leasing man that Broncos d could be light out, And
from what I saw on the data showed no, they
got a little humbled yesterday.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
And the surprising thing is the Colts they were picking
on Patrick Certain. You just don't see that, and Pat
Certain they were not afraid to go right at him,
and he maybe had his worst game that I've ever
seen since he's been with the Denver Broncos since his
rookie year. Most teams just don't even throw his way.
(03:51):
They were going right at him. He led the team
in tackles, which that's a bad sign. When your best
cornerback leads the team at tackles in the game, that
means he was making a lot of tackles down field.
That means they completed a lot of passes. I haven't
seen the official numbers on how many passes completed when
he was in coverage, but my eyes told me it
(04:13):
was way more than we're used to.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Let's focus on the positives. Some of the big takeaways
that we saw yesterday. I mean Troy Franklin got to
acknowledge just the game that he played yesterday for sure.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Absolutely, you know, he had his breakout game yesterday. I
had a feeling with two cornerbacks out for the Colts,
they were going to shut down Bronco's best receiver Sutton,
which they did, and they wanted to make these young
wide receivers beat them. Well, Troy Franklin did. He had
a good game, and Marvin Mems with that big touchdown
catch as well, but the Colts still got to win.
(04:45):
I'm having a hard time even saying that today. I
still I'm going to need the rest of today to
kind of put that behind me. It usually takes me
twenty four hours.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Yeah, So we're just gonna have to deal with it
and hopefully we go into LA. Sometimes you have to
win a game you're not supposed to win. Most people
didn't chalk that up as a w against the Chargers
coming up this weekend, but maybe they can sneak one well.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And then let's try to take our Broncos hats off
for a moment and possibly give credit to the Colts
that they may be Daniel Jones, this may be a
much better team than people anticipated.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Offensively, heck yeah, almost five hundred yards a game their
first two games. And Daniel Jones, man, he's had a
renaissance in Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
He looked kind of coaching he didn't get at his
previous stop.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Probably very very true.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, he looks like a rock solid quarterback and he's
a running threat along with the passing threat. They've got
a pretty good team. I think they're going to make
some noise this year.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Chargers playing today? Does that help us in any way?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
It does?
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Yeah, Monday night game against division rival the Raiders, so
they'll be operating on a short week, although we have
to travel, so another road game for the Broncos. But yeah,
them play on a Monday night certainly.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Helps a lot of film to watch, a few things
to work on. But you know, still, as you said
off their it's only two games in. Even though it does,
it's a gut punch or a nut punch, if you
know that.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
To for me, it was a nut punch. Yeah, for
everybody else, I don't know what you want to call it.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I'm sorry our boss.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Brenda, she was on the flight and I told him
the same thing I said. I felt like I got
kicked in the night. She said, me too, and.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I don't even have her.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Oh Man broncos Color analyst, host of the Rick Luis
Show on one O three five in the Fox, Rick Lewis,
thank you so much for joining us dark and early today,
even after a late night flight. We appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Anytime, guys, we'll look forward to when this weekend. We'll
talk next Monday,
