Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now on Colorado's Morning News. From a royal treatment to
getting back down to business. President Trump was again the
guest of honor at a state dinner in the UK
last night.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
And after the lavish event, Tariff talks back on the
table as Trump will be meeting with Prime Minister Cure
Starmer a little later today and joining us now in
the ka Commaspirit of Health hotline. ABC News White House
correspondents Karen travers, so, what does the day look like
for the President today and for the first lady.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Yeah, the President right now is meeting with the British
Prime Minister Kure Starmer at Chequers, which is the Prime
Minister's country estate north of London. Very lovely place. Behind
closed doors though, is this meeting? So they're not bringing
the press into it at this point. They're going to
be meeting with business leaders after this meeting, and then
later they'll have a press conference, so a chance to
ask about what they discussed and how that all went.
(00:45):
But things, of course always tend to slide, so we'll
see if the press conference is in two hours as
it's scheduled to be. But they've got a really big
agenda for this meeting. They're expected to talk about Russia's
war against Ukraine, the threat of Russia to NATO's eastern flank,
and of course the war in Gaza. And this all
comes after Starmer and other European leaders have been at
(01:05):
the White House just last month, meeting with the President,
meeting with President Zelensky of Ukraine, after the President had
met with Putin in Alaska. So there's a lot that
they're trying to push forward on that. Not clear if
there'd be any big developments today just between the British
Prime Minister and the President, but it's certainly something that
we know Starmer would like to discuss.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Karen taking a step back and looking at this elaborate
state dinner that took place yesterday. I know there's a
lot of high profile guests that were at that, including
some text CEOs. Is there business done at the state
dinner or is it more a pomp and circumstance.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Moment A little at both. You know, it's a chance
to be in the room with the President all of
his senior aides who had traveled as well. It was
not a great table for like the business dealing and mingling.
It was one long, rectangular table so you're kind of
if you've ever been at like a big wedding like that,
you're really just stuck talking to the person who's right
next to you or us from you. But you know,
(02:01):
we're told that there was you know, mingling done of course.
But the President will be sitting down with some of
those business leaders from both the British side and the
American side today as part of the official policy events
that he is doing. They talked about the importance of
these tech ties and the investments. Even King Charles brought
it up saying, you know that the UK was a
(02:23):
partner in the first trade deal of his first administration
and that brought jobs and growth to both countries, and
King Charles said, no doubt we can go even further
building this new era of our partnership.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Karen, what has the reaction been of the Brits. We've
seen some, we've read some, but what are you saying.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, there were protests yesterday and on Tuesday when the
President had first arrived, but you know it was far away.
It was in London. The President actually hasn't been in London.
He was staying out at Windsor, Windsor Castle ahead of
the state visit. There were protests that had projected images
of the President and Jeffrey Epstein on the walls of
Windsor Castle, But you know, otherwise, the president's been kind
(03:04):
of isolated and not really likely seeing any of these demonstrations.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Karen Tariff talks.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Do we have any speculations, I know you said closed
door meeting, but do we know about anything that could
take place following the meeting.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Well, they're going to have a press conference, so that'll
certainly be something that they'll get asked about, and we
have to stay tuned and see what they say they discuss.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
ABC News, White House Corresponding, Karen Travis, thank you, have
a great day.
