Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now on Colorado's Morning News. Improving lives through the spirit
and power of sports. The fourteenth annual Gift Sports Equipment
Drive will be taking place this Saturday in the rat
War parking lot of Ball Arena.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Great opportunity to clear out your gently use sports equipment
while also giving back to the community. Joining us in
the ka Comma Spirit Health Hotline is Barb Payton, wife
of Denver Bronco's GM George Payton and creator of the
Thoughtful Pinch app Barb mishaving you in studio, but it's
good to catch up with you on the phone.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yes, I wish I was there, just second traffic.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
How is this is the fourteenth Daniel? I can't believe
it's been going on this long, that Give Sports Equipment Drive.
How's its success led to so many years of this event?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
You know, I think people really want to help out.
There's a lot of need out there and people want
to help out. And what better way to both do,
you know, do two things at once, clean out your
things that you're not using anymore and then also helping
somebody that really needs it. So I feel like a
lot of people feel good about it. And then it's

(01:05):
just been growing. Just the more fans that are tuning
in and seeing what other fans are doing with their
equipment is just a contagious.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Thing, I think, And I know a lot of parents
probably have a lot of sports equipment because it feels
like every year children just grow and grow and grow,
and they have to buy new things every single time,
and they're not used as much as they might think
they would be used. So what do they do with
this equipment? Where does it go? And how much has
been collected in the past.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Oh gosh, Well, it's super easy. On Saturday. This Saturday
at ball Arena, they have it set up where you
can load up your car with you know, take the
neighbor stuff, you know, come get have be the point
for your neighborhood, and they bring all your use equipment.
They're really needing balls right now, footballs, baseballs, basketball, soccer balls,

(01:57):
really heavy in need. And then you pull up to
Ballerina and it's a really nice way that they've done this.
You pull up and there's people that can help you
pull everything out and it's a really fun experience. I
don't know if you've ever been down there for this vet,
but it's really fun. They have the mascots out there
and cheerleaders and lots of reverent representatives from all the

(02:22):
local pro sports teams and they'll help you out. But basically, yeah,
you just you can always donate to a Precious Child.
They will vet all of the equipment and make sure
it's safe. Whatever is still safe, they're going to definitely
pass on to people in need, but they will go

(02:43):
through everything to make sure that it's up to code.
And then the resources out there connect the partners come
to a Precious Child and that's where they get all
the equipment. So like Boys and Girls Club will come
and they'll come and get some of the equipment there too.
So so Precious Child does a lot of the work
for us just by collecting it and then vetting it.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
So talk about that relationship with the prescous child. That's
nice that they help and with this process with you, Barb.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yes, that's how it all started. Actually the founder she
just started giving equipment out like her son's used equipment
out of her garage and then it's just started turning
into the conglomerate that it is right now. But basically
my connection with them is first of all, we partner
with them with the Broncos. All of the professional sports teams,

(03:38):
by the way, do partner with a precious child, and
so soon to be. I'm hoping that we could get
the summit the new soccer team, women's soccer team to
partner too this next year. Maybe they'll be get their
stuff together and start donating for this cause. But yeah,

(03:58):
they the precious child. There is such a great fit
for a lot of the resources out there that are
trying to help other organizations get on their feet, and
so I like partnering with them. A lot of the
pro teams that GM wives, we like partnering with them.
But it's just such a special organization. And then this

(04:20):
just makes so much sense because we are sports teams
and we have sports fans out there that definitely plays
for us, so it just makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
The fourteenth Annual Give Sports Equipment Drive will be held
at Ball Arena this Saturday, nine to eleven am in
the rap Were parking lot. Like Barb mentioned, they're in
desperate need of a lot of sports balls at this time.
But make sure you go clear out your garage see
what you can give for this great event. Wife of
Denver Broncos GM George Peyton, creator the thoughtful pinch app,

(04:49):
Barb Payton. We appreciate your time as always, Thank you
so much

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Thank you so much, thank you

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
