Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Colorado's Morning News. President Trump says the FDA
will notify doctors that pregnant women should not take til
and All due to an increased risk of autism.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
For this reason, they are strongly recommending that women limit
titler and All use during pregnancy unless medically necessary. That's,
for instance, the cases of extremely high favor.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
However, doctors worry this could now create more risks during pregnancy.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
The maker of til and All releasing a statement defending
bill for the counter drug as safe for expectant moms.
Joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit Health hotline
is doctor Robert Malillo, neuroscientist, clinician, and founder of the
Malillo Method for treating neurological and development mental disorders. Doctor Malillo,
thank you so much for your time this morning.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
That's my pleasure to be here. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
What was your overall reaction to yesterday's announcement. Were there
things that you heard from the press conference that you
do support and others that prompted any concerns?

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Yeah? Overall, I think you know we are. We have
seen a dramatic increase in childhood neurological issues over the
past few decades and there are definitely environmental and lifestyle
factors that are driving it. So I think overall, you know,
these are good conversations to have. We haven't had enough
of them in the past. But you know, in tailanol,
I wrote a book about you know, different risk factors

(01:15):
in twenty thirteen, and tilanol was being implicated back then
by some of the research. But you know, it's one
of many number of things that might have some impact.
It's not the thing. It's not the primary issue by
any means. And really, you know, correlation isn't causation, so
meaning just because as a correlation it may elevate the risk,

(01:36):
it doesn't mean necessary that it does actually cause autism
or other neurological disorders.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
I was going to ask that doctor just simply put
as a seat of menefin, which is the chemical and
tail and all does it lead to can it cause
as a tie to any increased risks of autism?

Speaker 4 (01:52):
I mean, research has shown that there is a relationship
where you know, what we can say is that it
elevates the risk. That we believe it elevates the risk.
So in my book, I identified fifty known environmental and lifestyle
factors like the age of the parents. And you know,
if you live in the city, it's pollution. If you

(02:13):
live in the country, there's exposure to organifhosphate, pesticide. So
there are many different factors OBC, diabetes, hypertension, if a
mom has a flu, if a dad is over the
age of forty. You know, there's a lot of different factors.
But you know, we can't until we understand really the mechanism.

(02:33):
And I think the biggest gap right now, which is
where my research at my lab, is what is actually
happening in the brain of autism. You have to be
able to explain that. And I don't think that the
administration right now has a good enough idea or in general,
you know.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
What that is, What do we think might be better
at this point is at least giving the warning that
these could be a number of factors that could cause autism,
or maybe giving mothers the concern of like, oh great,
now if I take tail and all, I am I
going to be a culprit of what happens to my child.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Yeah, you know, it's I understand it's tough because again,
the idea of blaming somebody, I mean, I work with
these families every day and it's it's you know, can
be very difficult. But I think, you know, it's better
to be aware that there may be a relationship, and
you know, there are definitely environmental and lifestyle factors and
different things that may have an impact and effect. So

(03:27):
I think it's better to be aware of it, for sure.
I think that's part of the problem. You know, like
a lot of pediatricians will say things like milestones don't
matter and calling doesn't matter, and the idea is, well,
we don't want to get mom or dat upset, but
there are things that can be done if you're aware
of it and intervene early. So I think, you know,
just ignoring it and pretending like there isn't a possible

(03:49):
you know, relationship is not good either.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
I've seen some studies though where tail and all use
has gone down, but autism diagnoses have gone up. And
from the from the diagnoses standpoint, doctor autism, do we
diagno those more autism because we're now just better at
diagnosing it than we were fifteen twenty years ago, and
the spectrum is broadened.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Yeah, I mean that's part of it. In my book,
I had studied this for a couple of years and
really went out looked at some of the top and
spoke to some of the top epidemiologists. In about fifty
percent of the increase it can be attributed to better
recognition or diagnostic substitution or things like that. But there's
at least fifty percent of the increase that isn't explained

(04:27):
by any of that. I mean this there is a
real increase we are clearly seeing. And if you go
if you just go to schools and speak to teachers
that have been around for the past twenty twenty five years,
they'll tell you that there's so many more kids struggling
with all different types of issues. So this is a
real issue. I mean, one in four one in five

(04:47):
kids in the United States are going to be diagnosed,
and most of it is considered underdiagnosed, not overdiagnosed. So
these are real problems. I think it's the biggest problem,
you know, really in healthcare, and so we're paying attention
to it and looking at it. So I think that's
a good thing.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Another topic that was talked about yesterday was Luca Warren.
It's typically used to treat chemotherapy side effects. The President
said that the government is approving the drugs treatment for autism.
Any thoughts or reaction to.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
That, Yeah, luc of Warren. I mean, you know, we've
known for many years that in kids with autism and
other disorders, they may have deficits of B vitamins, folic
acid B twelve and there are many factors that have
to do with that. The main factor is that, you know,
they have issues with their gut maturity and development, and
they don't produce as much acid because they're in a

(05:37):
fight or flight state and you can't really absorb those
things as well. But you know, they're also has been
shown that there's more auto antibodies, or kids with autism
have more. They produce antibodies too easily, and some of
those can attack the receptors around foley. So you know,
replacing that or Luca of Warren is a good source

(05:57):
of that, and that might help a bit. But the
bigger question is why do they have these auto antibodies,
and what's going on with the immune system, what's going
on with their body, But most importantly, how is the
brain playing a role in it? Because what we see
is there's this imbalance in autism where the left hemisphere
is overactive and overdeveloped and the right hemisphere is very underdeveloped,

(06:18):
and any of these chemical things aren't going to be
the primary drivers of that.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Neuroscientists, clinician and founder of the Malillo method for treating
neurological and developmental disorders such as ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities,
it is doctor Robert Malillo, thank you so much, my pleasure,
thank you,
