Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Colorado's Morning News Chad Bauer and Gina Gondek. Wasn't pretty,
but a win is a win. The Broncos traveled to
London beat the Jets thirteen to eleven yesterday morning to
improve to four and two on the season.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, the offense struggled, but the defense dominant, nine quarterback
sacks and holding the Jets to minus ten net passing
yards and joining us on the KWA Common Spirit Health
Hotline is KA Sports host. It's Ryan Edwards. Okay, Ryan,
Before we dive a little bit into the game in general,
let's do a temperature check first, because you had some
very mixed feelings from fans on Broncos React. I mean,
(00:33):
I think we all had some mixed feelings of a
win's a win, but it wasn't a pretty win. What
were just some of the overall takeaways you heard from
fans postgame yesterday.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
I mean, a lot of is what you guys just
said there, defense dominated, the offense struggled. I think a
lot of the frustration for most of the fans came
of voice towards Sean Payton. Actually some of the play
calling in the second half. They seemed to get a little. Uh.
I don't know, conservative would be the best way to
describe some of what we saw, especially when you hand
(01:02):
it off to a fullback on third and ten. It
just felt like they were out of sorts and there
really wasn't much being done from the coaching staff to
fix it. So, you know, it's like one off. It's
an overseas game, So it's hard to really kind of
handic about anything, especially because we have seen some really
good things from the offense over the last few weeks.
(01:23):
But I can understand for the fans standpoint, especially after
over a decade of struggling offenses. Sometimes there's this like,
oh no, here we go again kind of feeling.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Now, Ryan the starting guard Ben Powers injured, He's out
for several games, has replacement, had a couple of penalties,
and you know, didn't look great at least on TV.
So what do they need to do to shore up
that position since they're going to be in the same
boat for probably a couple of months, right they are?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, Ben Power is going to be out, I mean
probably at least until December and potentially for the rest
of the season with that Bison injury. So yeah, you know,
Matt Pert is going to be the guy that they
put keep in there. I imagine they do have another
option in Calvin Throckbord, and if they want to go
that direction, I mean, and maybe they might after watching
(02:13):
the tape and being you know, you talk about two
holding penalties at a false start, that's a pretty brutal debut.
The Jets were clearly focusing in on him during the
course of the game, So you know, you think about, Okay,
are some of the issues in the second half because
they couldn't operate the offense. Was that all on Matt Pert?
Probably not, but they certainly were out of sync and
(02:33):
out of source. So that's got to be cleaned up.
And if it is going to have to do with
the left guard, then maybe you do have to look
at your options.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Ran I learned this at the postgame press conference with
coach Payton when he was asked if he apparently asked
for it not to be a bye week after the
London game, which I didn't know, is really the scenario
that you could do?
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Is that a good move?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Do we have any concerns come Sunday of flying back
and land in I don't know. I think Susie said
midnight last night or three am was the times you
got home gearing up for a Sunday game against the Giants.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, I'm with you on that, and we talked about
it yesterday during Broncos React when he said that, you know,
I mean, yeah, historically, coming back from London is always
a bye week, and this year we've seen several teams
do it like this, so you know, they get a
later bye week. Maybe you're you're happy with that, but
now you're taking on a pretty hot New York Giants
team and it's not said that you can't win this game.
(03:26):
At least you are at home. But you're right, I mean,
you're talking about, you know, your schedule shifting again. You
got to get into a normal work week which starts
almost immediately. And then the fact is is, yeah, you
are a little banged up. A lot of the defensive
guys were in and out yesterday kind of taking turns
in the Blue ten. So yeah, it's gonna be a
bit of a challenge there. I'm a bit surprised that
(03:46):
they opted to do that too, but under the circumstances,
they feel that this path leads to a more I
g guess conducive situation for him, So we'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
All right, let's talk about the dominance of the defense
minus ten net yards passing franchise record nine sacks I
think tied the franchise record. What all went into this?
I know Malcolm roaches back, Justin Fields doesn't really look
like an NFL quarterback is Was that all part of it?
And what do you attribute at the Broncos defensive success
to yesterday?
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, you need listed it all. It's all of that.
I'd say it's Justin Fields holding the ball too long.
It's the Broncos sort of dominant upfront. The way Vance
Joseph calls the defense, he gives so many different looks
that are really difficult for quarterbacks to diagnose. We even
saw Jalen Hurts, who won a Super Bowl, having a
tough time in the third and fourth quarter last week.
(04:39):
It's even tougher for a quarterback like Justin Fields, who
doesn't have the same tools and skill set as Jalen Hurts.
They're both mobile quarterbacks, but they don't see the field
the same way. And ultimately that I think the confusion
mixed with the talent that the Broncos are throwing at him.
I mean, this is the number one rush defense in
the league. They were doing that before they had this
incredible nine sack performance. This just only adds to the
(05:03):
lore of what they are, but it also meant, you know,
helps with the back end. I mean the Broncos. You know,
secondary is also very good, which gives that pass rush
time to excel and the way they're able.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
To Wrapping up with our social media poll question today, Ryan,
the grade you would give the Denver Broncos yesterday we
are giving the exception. You can't split up the grade
with offense and defense. That's what Susie had to do.
But overall grade or what your biggest takeaways are for that.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Well, if you're going like say an A for the
defense and then maybe a C for the offense, then
you're you're probably averaging out a B.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I mean, give an average, right, that's what we should
be doing. Everyone keeps giving two grades. They're like, no,
give the average. It's one team.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, yeah, so I think you know as a team
there will be special teams. I thought was also a C.
So you know you're probably averaging out of B B minus.
But you know, in the end you get a win.
And if they would have lost that game, I think
we're talking, you know, lower grades, right, We're we're all
in kind of a frenzy and a panic about what's
going on with this team. But you found a way
(06:05):
to win. You're four and two, you're tied for number
one in the HC West. It was ugly, but some
of these games over there in London and overseas are
ugly and they're kind of one offs in a lot
of ways. It's not a true home field or away crowd.
So again, I'm not trying to make excuses. They've got
some things to clean up, for sure, but you get
to be foreign too when you get to the end
(06:26):
of the season as you're trying to make the postseason,
what really really matters is the wins and losses. And
I don't think we're going to look back and say, well,
but that was a close win. Nobody's gonna say that.
They're going to say they won the game, and that's
what matters. Ryan.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
I'm sure you guys will have much much more to
talk about this afternoon on KOI Sports this afternoon at three.
Thanks so much for your time, Ryan, anytime, guys.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Thanks
