Speaker 1 (00:00):
While many champion the medicinal uses of cannabis and attribute
overall health benefits to marijuana, there are health risks associated
with high concentration cannabis use, particularly among youth and pregnant women.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Ta on THHC is an awareness campaign by the Colorado
School of Public Health and collaboration with the Inniesium Health
that highlights the health risks of high concentration cannabis use.
And Joining us now in the ka Common Spirit Health
Studio is doctor Annie Collier, Associate professor with the Colorado
Colorado School of Public Health for Denver, Bronco's All Paul
Ride receiver Brandon Lloyd, and founder of Anichium Health is

(00:32):
James Corbett. All three of you, thank you for coming
in with us this morning.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Thank you for having me, Thanks for having us.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
James, I want to start with you. Your organization has been
asked and tasked to spearhead this campaign. Why and what
have you learned about cannabis and the risks to those
vulnerable populations.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Yeah, well, thanks for the opportunity to spread such an
important message. I think the key message for us is
that we're looking at public health data to discern some
of the increasing and unknown risks of high concentration cannabis,
particularly for youth pregnant people, and we want parents be
able to have that message just tell their kids.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
And Brandon, you've been a spokesperson for this from some
personal perspectives and personal experiences with this. Tell us a
little bit about this and how your life has changed
since ditching cannabis.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Well, the biggest thing for me is the you know,
the negative effects of cannabis, the cognitive impairment, the flat
out laziness, and just the ability to function with a
better mood. You know, that's all been positive upsides. And
I just want to use my platform to get the
attention of young people, to get the attention of parents,

(01:33):
to get the attention of adults who are also struggling
with with addiction to high concentration cannabis, and show them
what it's like to break through to the other side.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Brandon, I'm glad you're talking about this because I know
some in the NFL have seen cannabis as it's my term,
as a magic elixir. You know, I think about it.
I think about Marshawn Lynch quite a bit. He seems
to be and it's okay, proud he uses it, but
it doesn't work the same for everybody. And you mentioned
some about the concentrations, but but what you're saying is
when you used it, it wasn't what everybody told me
it was going to be exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
And then private conversations, that's what I'm hearing. I hear
more of those conversations that actually, when I'm finished planned,
I didn't want to be a recluse. I didn't want
to be this guy who was not being myself, and
that's kind of what marijuana was bringing retired players into.
And I didn't hear enough voices. I don't hear actually

(02:25):
any voices out there saying what I'm saying. So I
just want to put my voice out there so we
can start having a responsible conversation about marijuana culture and
how it affects us.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Let's be Devil's advocate in this conversation, and I'll leave
this question up to whoever wants to answer it. Obviously,
states have medicinal marijuana, like we mentioned, and treating various conditions,
and some people say that THHC helps reduce anxieties, PTSD,
chronic pain, Does it? And do we have something that
we're dealing with that's far more than the medicinal purposes

(02:56):
of it.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
Well, cannabis includes different and chemicals THHC and CBD, and
CBD is mostly responsible for a lot of the medicinal characteristics.
And the amount of THHC that you find in products
today is extremely different than what it used to be.
It was probably three percent in the eighties. It's up
to ninety five percent now. So we really don't know

(03:19):
the impact, but we do know that the lower doses
are associated of THHC with harms, particularly in youth and
people that are pregnant.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Doctor, when you see that data, when you have this,
and I know you've been a part of other anti
drug and positive health campaigns, are you shocked by what
we're learning about cannabis at this stage?

Speaker 5 (03:37):
Well, not completely shocked, but I think I'm shocked to
see how little is known in the public about this,
that people assume that it's good for you, and it's
okay that it's safe for pregnancy, and it may be
fine for the mother, but it actually can cause great
harms to the developing fetus.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
So what went wrong? Where did we go wrong in
this situation? Because it seemed like we were regulating it
relating it properly, properly, but it feels like now we've
gone off the rails of just having things in such
high concentration that we're having these negative effects of it.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
I say, it's basically a free market and making a
product that has higher concentrations is more appealing to people.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Brandon, It's kind of odd because with teens you often
think of peer pressure. You're professional athletes successful, Is there
peer pressure amongst the ranks that you ought to not
talk about this?

Speaker 3 (04:27):
I wouldn't say not talk about it, but it's a
cultural conversation. And that's what I appreciate about the t
on THHC campaign is, yes, the science is saying one
thing and our interpretation of it, but it's the personal
experiences that need to be brought to the forefront so
others can identify with it and then start having a

(04:50):
responsible conversation and how we can make changes in our life.
It's a cultural aspect. What it reminds me of is
a lot of the concussion behavior when I started, when
we started playing football, you know, back in the tackle
football in the eighties and nineties, there was no vocabulary
for states of concussion, right, you know, and the marijuana.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Sell was wrong?

Speaker 1 (05:09):
That was it? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Hey, then that means the game just started, right, you know,
you get a stinger, all right, now you're ready for
the big time. But it's the same thing if I
equate this to the marijuana space, you know, the cognitive impairment. Dude,
where's your car? Ha ha ha? Isn't that funny? Or hey,
smoke weed? Would oh? Dj he starts talking to himself.
Isn't that funny? Right? And so now we can start

(05:33):
using science to label what's going on with us, and
then we can start having a responsible conversation about percentages
and concentrations, types of modalities, how we're ingesting it, or
even if we should be ingesting it at all.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
James, tell us a little bit more about Anesium Health.
What do we know about this campaign so far, what
have we learned, and what do we hope to pursue
in the near future just to get more awareness.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
About this Absolutely well a Niesium Health's public benefit company.
We do public health marketing campaigns and states around the country,
leading one in New Hampshire around nine to eight eight,
which is something people need to know about. And tandem
with this, you can call text or chat ninety eight
eight for confidential mental health what substance you support. But
this type of work is very, very important, and we
do it in a multimedia fashion, so we're doing art

(06:17):
exhibits to raise the awareness of it from both youth
and children. We're doing social media using influences like Brandon.
We also have billboards that you can see right now
up in places like Union Station and other places throughout
the state. So you'll see this more and more. And
the key is that personal messages. We want people to
tell their stories and learn from other stories. And I'm
honored to be working in partnership with the School of

(06:39):
Public Health because sadly, in the post COVID arena, we
know that state authorities have less trust than ever. So
institutions like the School of Public Health, they can take
the politics to the side and lead with true non
ideological science is of great important.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
James, I want to follow up with you on this.
I know you we are friends. How much of what
we're seeing with things like this the decriminalization, which is
a good piece, but the legalization of certain things where
it's it's permissive now to take it. So you're seeing
maybe the good with some of it, but seeing the
bad and the abuses of it too. Is that part
of the concern is some of the process now where

(07:15):
it's more accepted societally to do these things.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah, so the term is called normalization, and it's normalized now.
We smell it, we see it. My ten year old
kid at a baseball pointed to a sign and said, Dad,
what's that the marijuana leaf? So I had to have
the conversation with a ten year old. And by the way,
science says that we should have a conversation with middle
school we should start that early. But two truth can
be true. We can hold two truths together. Decriminalization possibly
some benefits, medical marijuana definitely some benefits, but at the

(07:41):
same time we are seeing some risks. So we just
want to have an honest, nuanced conversation in partnership with
trusted authorities and want people to be aware and once
they're aware, they can make the decision for.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Their own and with that honest conversation. Brandon, in your
personal experience, what do you hope listeners take away from this?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Well, hope listeners take away that this is a trusted campaign.
You know, with the School of Public Health, the State
of Colorado. So it's good, honest, you know, fact, fact
based statistical information that we can therefore make our decisions on.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
And final question for you, doctor, are because this is
targeting young people or do you think the message will resonate?
Are you getting a chance to talk with people about
the physical and the psychological effects of too much cannabis.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
Yeah, we're doing that as much as we can. I
think people who use it don't actually know as much
about the harms associated with it. We found from research
that you know more about the harms if you're not
using it. So we're just trying to get information out
there so that people can, as these people have been saying,
have honest conversations about it.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
The t on THHC Doctor Any Collier, Associate professor with
the Colorado School of Public Health, former Denver Broncos All
Pro Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd and founder of a Nichem Health.
It's James Corbett. Guys, thank you so much for joining
us this morning raising awareness about this. We appreciate you
come an end today.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
Thanks
