Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks, Jesse. Here's the latest on the Hartford yard Goats.
I'm Jeff Dooley. Sean Sullivan is the Rockies top lefty
pitching prospect yet to debut in the big leagues. He's
been very impressive in his games at the Double A
level ever since arriving in Hartford last year. After a
stellar start at Class A Spoke Anne. In twenty twenty four,
he was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Year. He

(00:23):
and Chase Dolandra made quite the one two punch first
and a ball and then again after their promotions to
the Eastern League.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, I think, I mean, you could ask Chase the
same thing. I think we had a great year together.
I think we both learned a lot first full year
of pro ball. I think it's just about getting experience
and kind of getting out there and just getting innings.
I think, you know, we both kind of grew up
or we went through the rankings a little bit together
in High A and then Double A at the end
of the year, and I think it was a great year. Obviously,

(00:53):
I had a lot of success on the mound, and
I think kind of just trying to carry that forward
into this year.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Left handers shout.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Here was the one two pitch swinging to miss strike three,
get him on the breaking pitch, Benita strikes out. Sullivan
will finish with nine punchouts on the night. The rocky
second round pick out of Wake Forest has made a
smooth transition to the Eastern League, returning to his home
routes in New England, and started their first ever home
playoff game for the yard Goats last September.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, it's awesome. I think it was great to kind
of get a little bit of an experience at the
end of last year and obviously be able to pitch
in the playoffs two was a lot of fun. But yeah,
it's awesome, and I think kind of coming into this
year knowing I'll be back is just knowing being a
little bit more familiar with the ballpark, the coaching staff
and everything. So I think it's a great kind of

(01:40):
place to be this season.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
He's been even better after beginning this season a bit
late with a hip issue. Sullivan has been dominant since
joining the yard Goats in mid May. He's five to
three with a three point zero nine earned run average
over his first eight starts, with forty five strikeouts and
only eight walks and forty three and two thirty eight.
Sullivan won't overwhelm me with high velocity, as his fastball

(02:04):
sits in the mid eighties, but it moves a ton
and you combine that with a slider and change up.
Most importantly, he gets out twenty two year old Sean
Sullivan set set for his thirty fifth pitch, pitching roots
swing and a miss strike three. Sean Sullivan turns the
light off and Ben mel Jerry picks up his third strikeoud.
One of the great things about baseball is all the

(02:25):
unique batting stances and deliverties for pitchers. And I want
to ask you to describe yours because it's almost like
you do a full squat before you deliver a pitch.
Talk about that.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Is that something you've always done, because obviously it works.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I think it's kind of just part of my pre
pitcher team that kind of started when I was I
don't know, I actually don't know when it started, but
I've been doing it for a while. It just kind
of helps me get kind of into my preset position.
But yeah, I like it.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
You're a New England guy from andover Massachusetts, grew up
a New England sports fan, I want to ask you
who's on that Mount rushmore for you in terms of
favor Are athletes out of Boston?

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, I think I mean growing up, obviously you got
to put Brady up there, and I think him and
Ortiz are kind of my top two growing up. But yeah,
I think they're obviously, you know, great winners and just
kind of great role models. But you know a lot
of great, great, you know memories watching them. So yeah, yeah, yeah,
I was, you know, I was hoping the Celtics could

(03:22):
pull it off this year, but you know, I still
love all those teams.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
So Sean Sullivan has impressed Yard Goats pitching coach Dan Meyer.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, he's been. He's been outstanding for us, even you know,
last year, starting Game three for US in the or
game two here in the playoffs. You know, Sean pitched
it at Wake Forest, right, He was a big conference there,
is not scared. He shows composure, you know, and yeah,
he doesn't light up the you know, the numbers per se,
but very deceptive. Guys struggle to see his fastball. You know,

(03:50):
he still runs at eighty seven and eighty nine. It's
got good ride to it, some good armside run and
then a plus change up to go with, you know,
pretty solid slider, so you know he's able to execute.
You can't sit on one pitch in any count. Just
a little more of a traditional guy. But it's fun
to watch because he just goes at guys and he
pitches his strengths and that's a.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
Strike three called excellent pitch from Sullivan and he catches
shred flat footed. That's now seven strikeouts for Sullivan and
three and two thirds innings.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Guy swinging miss with that break or the fastball, and
then he just plays around with it.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
What are some of the things that you think that
he needs to improve on to take that game to
the next level.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Yeah, I think that for Sean, we've been just kind
of really working on some glove side command stuff, especially
with the breaking ball, and also just times to the
plate holden runners, maybe like a load and go or
slidestap mixed in, and you know he can add that
to you know, pitch some pitch execution with some breaking
balls and change ups to but also just keeping the
runners close and saving ninety feet and you can do
that here and there. It's a lot harder to give

(04:53):
up a run on three singles right unless the guys deals,
So just you know, just doing the little things there,
the attention of detailed.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Stuff the yard Soft Pat talks about what he's looking
to do this season.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, I think kind of just kind of keep up
with consistency. I think obviously being sidelined at the beginning
of the year, I feel like a little bit behind,
but I think kind of just trying to catch up,
get back on it, into my groove, and just kind
of keep producing quality starts.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Sean Sullivan continues to climb the ladder, one better and
one strikeout at a time. It may not be long
until he joins his minor league teammate Chase Stonlander. That's
the latest with the Hartford yard Goats. I'm Jeff Dooley.
Now back to you at the ballpark.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
